Even under quarantine Tomo continues to uphold the highest standards of sushi. We ordered for curbside pick up, paid over the phone, called in order, and they take it out to your car if you choose that method. Some Resturants do not have this option of curbside delivery where they come to you. I like this about them especially during these quarantine times. This is our second curbside order to go. The cherry blossom is a perfect starter. It's filled with texture and flavor. Get ready for a mouth explosion. I like the cooked stuff so we ordered the dancing Charlie roll and the baked Japanese lasagna. All rolls were satisfying. However, we did order the chicken teriyaki and it was average. I have had better. The chicken however is high quality chicken. It is a little on the pricey side but for the quality it is worth it. If you are thinking about ordering out consider tomo to go. Maybe it's the friendly neighborhood vibes or the fact that it's been around for now 16 years that make it so lovable, but it's not the food. ===== What was standard/on par: - Nabeyaki udon ($12.95) - Calamari ($9.5) ===== What was subpar: - Sushi Dinner ($25) which includes 1 spicy tuna roll and 8 nigiri of the chef's choosing: rice was horribly dry and unseasoned, crumbling as it was picked up. The fish was visibly inconsistently sliced and also did not appear fresh. Fresh salmon toro should be plump and have a nice sheen to it, but ours were dull and tired looking. There wasn't anything that stood out. - A la carte sashimi: again, inconsistently cut pieces of fish and some pieces thinner than what came on the nigiri :( - A la carte tempura: fun to order and eat since you can mix and match items. Reasonably priced too. The batter was too dense and held onto too much oil when it should be light and fluffy. Shrimp was overcooked ===== It was easy enough to make a reservation by calling in ahead of time and highly recommended if you're considering dining in fri-sat. Woohoo! We finally got to sit inside and eat at the sushi bar. We had several wonderful take out meals during the shutdown, all were very good. We even sat inside for dinner last week, also very good. But, now, back at the sushi bar! We love the interaction with the guys, hampered a bit now by the plexiglass. It seems there is always something on the "fresh board" that we haven't heard of or tried before. Every piece of fish we had last week was awesome. I usually never leave a review, but this place is absolutely phenomenal! I have NEVER had sushi of such quality, each bite was better than the first. The salmon toro sashimi absolutely blew my mind, melting in your mouth, so simple yet delicious. All select rolls are perfectly balanced, the fish is delectable, in every way, leaving you satisfied. The employees working the sushi bar are very friendly, very good at what they do. Honestly disappointing and over all below expectations. Ordered a few different dishes and the only thing that we enjoyed was the dinner tempura (although we could do without the onion and it needed to be a little crispier). Chicken teriyaki was so dry we wouldn't even take it home to feed the raccoons and was lacking flavor, the soba noddles served with it tasted like over cooked instant noodles and the "seasonal vegetables" consisted of three small broccoli florets that had been steamed with zero seasoning. Gyozas were soggy and less interesting in flavor then the ones I get in the target frozen section and make in an air fryer. The miso soup had hospital cafeteria instant vibes and the sushi roll we tried was a tuna roll and it was obviously not fresh. No one checked on us as we ate, someone only came by to tell us about last call and to hand us the bill. We were hoping the reviews were on point but no luck and we won't be going back. read more

This is by far one of the best sushi restaurants I've been to and every time I'm back in Austin for work I try to visit or take clients there. The atmosphere of the place is fun yet intimate because its not very big. Servers are always friendly and every time I get the same lady. She's been there for many years and always works lunch. As far as the sushi, its fresh and never disappoints. We always start off with sushi bombs. They come already with the right amount of soy sauce and fresh wasabi per bit. They will hit you really quick with the wasabi and then its gone. As far as the rolls, I almost always follow the recommendations of the waitress and she has not steered me wrong yet. My favorite sushi spot in the greater Austin area! Space is small and usually has a long wait in the evening, but it's well worth it! Or drop in a little earlier to avoid the dinner rush. Great quality and innovative rolls that are absolutely delicious! Not like the sushi restaurants that just drench their rolls in a pool of sauce to mask poor sushi quality. Their rolls are simple and really focus on the ingredients put into them. Fish and seafood is extremely fresh. Sure you can go to other sushi restaurants and may get better sushi and pay double the price. Tomo is fairly priced and you'll be amazed by the quality you're getting for what you pay. Try the volcano roll that comes out on a fiery plate! Miso glazed cod is delicious as well. We had the worse service ever. Food was great but service was very awful! It was my birthday. It was me and my 3 kids under 10 years old. Our server never introduced his name and I wished I knew his name because this review is about him! We came in at 730pm, July 7. We spent $400 here with 18% tip even when he was the WORST server ever! I ordered teriyaki with no vegetables for my kids. For 20 mins straight, they were asking where the noodles was. On the menu, teriyaki is yaki soba noodles with your choice of protein. I ordered it with chicken. 30 minutes after ordering the noodles, I asked when the noodles were going to come out? He forgot to put in our order. 10 minutes pass by and he brings out the kids food and guess what? It's chicken with RICE and vegetables. I asked him when my NOODLES were coming and I specifically asked with no vegetables because it's for the kids. When the chicken with rice came out,he said the noodles were under the chicken. Why the f would noodles be mixed in with rice? Turns out, it was the vegetables. After the wrong order was sent and we sent it back because we didn't order it, he sent out our bill. We had a FULL sake bottle that we had just ordered and we wanted to order dessert for my birthday, but NO, he sent out the bill trying to rush us out. My birthday dinner was ruin and my kids were looking forward to their noodles and singing for my bday with dessert. It was very unprofessional to bring the bill out when we had a FULL sake and wanted to order desserts but we never got the chance. We never even asked for the bill because we weren't done. We were there for less than an hr when the bill came out too. It was pretty disappointing. Don't come here if u want a rude server to serve you and ruin your special occasion! read more

Came here again and remembered what We ordered this time because I wrote it down. My first review was completely useless. So here is round two: Bluefin sashimi - this cane with a green sauce and it was so good and tender. I think this and the cod was my top two favorite. Agedashi tofu - this has a nice crispy outside but in general, lacked a little bit of flavor. Cod - second time having this and this is one of my top favorites. It comes with a sweet miso glaze on the side. The cod was cooked perfectly and super tender. Live eel - never had this before but super tender and good. It's not like the original eel everyone knows about. It doesn't have the sweet glaze. This one is more pure and tender. Chu Toro - also a great one. It's toro, who doesn't like toro? You can't go wrong with this. Sea urchin - this is one of the things that I have to get when I see it on the menu. It's fresh and great here. I've had ones that literally taste like laundry water. It had a great crisp flavor. Snapper - this was a little too much citrus for my preference but it was light and perfect for a hot summer day. Sushi bomb - this caught me off guard. They call it a "bomb" for a reason. The wasabi goes straight up your nose. You don't taste or feel anything else. Salmon skin roll - this wasn't typical salmon skin roll where you feel the crispy skin. It was still really good but I was expecting crispy skin on top of the roll. It tasted like a regular roll. King salmon sashimi with truffle - this was amazing. I love everything with truffles on it. The first bite, you could taste and smell the truffle. The fish was tender as always. All in all, this is one of my favorite sushi places in Austin. I would definitely come back. I haven't been disappointed yet. read more

Tomo used to be one of my faves but I hadn't visited in several years. I have to say that they seem to have lost a little bit of the eye-of-the-tiger on this trip. We had a table of 5 hungry sushi lovers and I would say that out of multiple rolls and nigiri, only a couple of pieces really stood out. We had quite a bit of Tuna and Salmon ordered and it was OK - but not really impressive. And this is very small but weird thing - the Miso soup smelled and tasted like it had a bit of bleach in it. Like the bowls had been sterilized but not fully rinsed. I have had enough really good food here to give this another shot - but my expectations are definately lowered. read more

We usually come on weekends and as usual, it was packed. The interior is dark and atmospheric with a sushi bar in the center. Staff was very kind and exceptionally straight-faced with the euphemistic menu. Parking in the front is easy to find though lines will reach outside the building on busy evening. The fresh wasabi was the star of the night. Having been to Japan multiple times, the flavor was truly on par with some of the best. When it first hits your tongue, the subtle umami overpowers your senses and leaves your mouth watering and you wanting more. I highly recommend the Miller Roll. The roll itself is relatively simple with salmon and tuna combo but it does well to complement the wasabi taste. After the first roll, none of us were satisfied and we ordered another - and another. Prices are average for sushi, but the lunch special bento boxes are a GREAT value! $10 for tonkatsu with miso soup, salad, rice, tempura (veggie AND shrimp), and cali roll? It was so much food and very tasty! The David roll and Something Wrong roll were both extremely good. The inside is small and tables are very close together, but the bar is a delightful option. I have to give props to the staff too - host, waiter, chef, and management. I last dined in yesterday at 1:30. They close from 2:30-5:30, and last call for food is 2pm. Very reasonable. Some horribly rude couple came in at 2:15 demanding food after multiple people told them the kitchen was closed. Take out is easy--just plate nicely and enjoy. Their Sushi Bomb is four pieces of nigiri, the Tina Hand Roll has tempura shrimp, spicy tuna, crab and avocado in a soy wrapper. I can not believe how good this place is. It's so small and in a small restaurant strip but it is incredible. Got the ex girlfriend, sonya, who's your daddy, and sex on the beach. All tasted amazing but the ex girlfriend one in particular I could not stop eating. You only get 1.5 hours with your reservation but it's no problem at all, we were in and out in 45-50 mins.
