We used this company for the first time yesterday and were very impressed. Our A.\/C system stopped working over the weekend and the repairman determined it was not an A/C problem, but an electrical one. He recommended Tomato. We called them, and they came that afternoon. Oscar found the problem--I don't think it was easy--a nick in the electrical line (currently covered by vines) that goes from inside the house to the A/C fan. He fixed it right away, and we had a decent night's sleep. We plan to go to them for any electrical work we need done in the future. read more

My husband and I moved to Chevy Chase from Boston about 2 years ago. We had a heck of a time finding a decent electrician until we stumbled upon Tomato. Our old house has had a number of electrical issues, which were "fixed" by other electricians, only to break again or stop working soon after. Also, it was so difficult just to schedule an appointment with these other electricians, who often were late or never showed. NOT with Tomato Electric. Someone on my ListServ recommended Tomato and boy am I glad they did. I only had a couple small jobs, fixture replacements. Kelvin was here on time, did the work quickly, cleaned up and was out of here in less that 90 minutes. Don't even bother asking for a quote (or inquiring if there would be a trip fee). This is the response (along with an insulting remark) I received after requesting for one. Business owners need to learn to treat their customers with respect. "we would not be able to assess the situation just by looking. We would have to do work. At that point we would be billing you. We just started using Tomato Electric. Now we've used them four times and each time, they were johnny -on-the-spot, delivering superior service at a very good value. They are honest and reliable. I've found every electrician to be professional and friendly. I notice a couple of one-star reviews. I think more information needs to be shared since their response is filled with deception, as expected. 1. Electricians (Scott, in particular who is a team leader and considered the best electrician by Tomato) installed external GFCI outlets and they kept failing. I hired another electrician who said they were installed incorrectly because the boxes weren't caulked. Water entered into the outlets, causing them to trip. 2. Ceiling lights were crooked and had to be corrected before drywall was put up. Lazy electricians did not measure to ensure they were straight. 3. Installing light fixtures and stripping some screws and paint off. 4. Sloppy wiring work in the basement, which I had another electrician to clean it up at a cost. 5. Kenny, one of the electricians, admitted that he bent the electric heater when we approached him on the spot. Then, he lied to his boss, Bob Richardson, to save face. Unsurprisingly, Bob Richardson is blaming me for deception to again save face. They are a small business, which they cannot afford to fire their own employees for misconduct. 6. Paul Yosif, one of their electricians was so rough with my circuit breaker and mislabeled the wires. He is one rude man, thinking he knows more than customers. and MORE! Hire this company at your own risk. read more

One star is more than this company deserves. They took forever to do the work on our house- a heavy-up, overhead lights, gfci outlets among other things. The main reason was because half the time the electrician assigned to work on our house didn't even show up- apparently he was going through personal issues. This is understandable, what is not is how the company didn't have the wherewithal to have someone else cover for him. After a heavy-up (rewiring the electrical panel) we had a bunch of cables and wires sticking out of the side of our house, which is normal. However, we had the work done 1.5 years ago, and they are still there. Why? Because Tomato Electric kept blaming Pepco for not coming to do the work, and saying that the only way to get them to come was through the company. Recently I found out the real reason. THEY NEVER HAD THE PANEL INSPECTED BY THE COUNTY! My family was living in a potentially unsafe home for over a year. The only way I found out about this was when I had a competent electrician come over to do an estimate for some other work. So then I had Tomato schedule an inspection. I told the secretary that I'd leave a key out for the inspector, which she said was fine. Except it's not fine, the homeowner needs to be onsite! So I went ahead and rescheduled. The panel passed inspection, but turns out the inspector needed to inspect all the wiring Tomato did on the house- wiring that is now behind drywall for obvious reasons. I put him on the phone with the secretary, who tried to tell the inspector that the only work Tomato did on the home was on the panel, even though the inspector had the permits for the other work right in front of him, and even though I had already told her that more work was done than just the panel. According to the inspector, Tomato was supposed to have called for a county inspection while the wiring was exposed, which is standard procedure! After all this, I got on the phone with the owner, Bob, and was never given a straight apology. Instead, he insinuated that there was a possibility that I had been contacted by Tomato electric to schedule an inspection months ago, and never responded. I was never contacted by Tomato Electric to schedule an inspection. As the company that pulled the permits, they are legally obligated to arrange an inspection, and they never did. I've never had a worse experience with a company, period. And by the way, they are expensive and their work is mediocre. read more

Tomato Electric is partnered with Thomas Clark plumbers, who installed our hot water heater. We lost power to the hot water heater and Thomas Clark had us call Tomato Electric to get it back - so the house had no hot water. I got a hold of Tomato on Sunday, Mother's Day, and Matt picked up, even though they don't have emergency service. After I explained our emergency, Matt was very understanding and responsive, texting me with times he was available on Monday to get repairs done. Thankfully, the repair was covered by warranty and we didn't need him after all, but he was very responsive and made our service a priority. read more

These guys are the best. I have used them at my home and at my business. They are prompt, clean, professional, and perfectly priced. I do not understand why there are negative reviews at all. I've been using them for 15+ years and have never had an issue. At my home they did my heated floor and my outdoor "whole house generator" plug, with whatever needed to be done to my circuit breaker panel, plus more regular work. I don't understand what needs to be done, which is why I call them. Sometimes I just call and they help with free advice. And then everything works perfectly!!! And quite safely. The technician, Peter, called ahead to inform me of his arrival time. He was pleasant and neat. He was helpful assisting me with the best locations for my new lights. Had 2 ceiling fans, and a dedicated circuit for a humidifier installed. Matt came out and gave an estimate. I found the price to be quite reasonable than other estimates from other companies. The following week Peter and Joe came out to do the installation. Scheduling was easy and friendly. I received a phone call half hour before they arrived. Peter and Joe were friendly and professional and completed the job within the time frame as promised. I was very pleased that they cleaned up after the installation. Called Tomato Electric in the morning and they were able to be at my house just a few hours later. Peter was punctual, friendly and professional. Unfortunately I didn't get the other electrician's name, but he was impressive as well. They were both very considerate. The job involved troubleshooting some flickering lights and installing an exterior outlet. The exterior outlet presented a bit of a challenge due to the quirks of my 1923 house. The first attempt was aesthetically displeasing but they cheerfully worked as a team to get it installed to my satisfaction. I found the price to be quite reasonable. Also, when I called this morning they answered right away and the woman who took my call was professional and efficient. Much better than leaving a message and hoping someone will call you back.I am considering running electricity to my detached garage and if I do I will definitely contact Tomato Electric for an estimate. read more
