I liked the fact that they had small lampshades to fit my wall sconces, but wished they had more color options other than beige or white. We had the best customer service from Jon and Roger. Jon knows those catalogues inside out. He was able to show us exactly what we needed. I just purchased a new home and want to swap out 75% of the lighting and said that instead of supporting Home Depot or Lowe's that I wanted to support a small / local business. WELP! I was in this store for a good 30 minutes and not one single time did any of the sales people acknowledge me or ask if I needed assistance. The same applied to the other ethnic customer who was in the shop (she literally had to chase someone down) while the other non-ethnic customers who were already in shop or who walked in after us were greeted and assisted expeditiously! If you are looking for a new light fixture and not sure what you want, this is the place. There is a lighted and clean parking lot attached to the building and it is two floors of brightness. We were greeted aware right away with a smile and the lady advised that what we were looking for was probably on the second floor. She walked us up, and explained the route we should take on the second floor to view all the light fixtures. While we perused, the lady came back to check on us to see if we had any questions, answered all of our questions. We also inquired about one light fixtures if it came in another color, i.e. bronze. My most recent visit to LU was to obtain a replacement exterior light socket with a hickey to be housed in a lamp pole (one of four lights were not working). Roger did not have an exact replica but was able to remove the hickey, install it on a new socket and further modify to include a ground screw. He allowed me to watch his progress, ask him questions so that I could learn a bit, and was extremely professional and personal. Came here twice in two consecutive days. The first time was to look for a light for the bathroom. The guy was knowledgeable and suggested two companies' catalogs based on my taste. They were helpful but not exactly what I was looking for. I did see many cool lights though. There is an impressive inventory. The second time I called ahead. I was looking for gold tone chain to hang a heavy chandelier. Many hardware stores where I looked had zinc plated heavy chain or gold toned chain that only supported 35lbs. The woman checked and said they had it. When I arrived, they took me in the back where they had an extensive selection of chandelier chains in gold. These are good people. I brought them a desk lamp needing repair. They noticed my broken finger so the form was filled in for me. I got a quote and time estimate along with a smile and good day. Half way through the time estimate the lamp was ready for 20% less than estimated. They explained what was broken and why. They gave me a free bulb. We talked about the good life for awhile. I've never rated a lamp store but Lamps Unlimited has to be as good as it gets! Actually, I can't remember ever going to a lamp store before, but I had a specific need; the 70s era lamp that once graced my childhood home needed rewiring for a three-way bulb, plus I needed an appropriate shade and finial. I have to give credit to the lady who works there (I did not catch her name), but she exhibited a lovely amount of patience as I hemmed and hawed over which shade to choose. I had my mind set on a stall barrel shade but she tried a shorter barrel shade which I admitted I liked better. She even found an ideal finial in the cheap finial box! She even threw in a free bulb to boot (but after spending over $100 on a silk shade...). My experience was great at Lamps Unlimited and they certainly live up to their name! read more

I took three lamps unlimited last week. The lamps were more than 40 years old and needed repair. One of the lamps the switch fixture was loose and I was unable to tighten it. When I brought the lamps in they said it would cost between 25 and 40 a lamp depending on what needed to get done. When I picked up a week later they looked amazing. The repair person put new switches new wires and tighten them so they work perfectly now. And the real bonus was a piece of felt added to the base of each lamp so that it would not scratched the surface of the tables that we put them on. I highly recommend lamps unlimited. They were helpful friendly and did exactly the job that we wanted done for a reasonable price. read more

Great place to do business with. I brought in an old lamp that needed a new shade and rewiring; a week later I had a great new shade and the lamp finished faster than the original estimate. The shade wasn't cheap (around $80), but is really nice, and the rewiring ran less than $30. Great customer service in the store and prompt notification when the piece was ready. They have a good selection of lamps and chandeliers on the floor as well as many, many replacement shades. They also polish brass and silver. He was busy with another customer and turned and made eye contact with me and said he would be with me after his current customer. This place has such great service! I purchased a ceiling fan from them almost two years ago and was dealing with a persistent and annoying clicking noise every time I turned it on. They replaced the unit for me twice, and after discussing with John and Rudy, I also hired them to handle the installation with the second replacement. John was extremely professional during his visit and took extra precautions upon entering my home to put me at ease during the pandemic. Ever since he completed the work, the fan has worked perfectly! I'm so glad that I made the original purchase with Lamps Unlimited (who else would still be listening to issues about a product they sold two years ago?) and that I finally hired them to do the installation work, too. Two stars for spotty service, which is hard to understand because expensive specialty lighting is kind of a high-touch business. The kind of person who will drive 45 minutes across town In search of a $250 replacement silk lamp shade typically appreciates personal service and advice. If she didn't, she'd buy less-fine items more cheaply online. After losing a good shade for a favorite lamp in a move, I sought out a lighting store that might have a replacement. Hard to believe I couldn't find any others in Northern Virginia. So after checking the website for store hours, after a day of unpacking I drove 45 minutes from Fairfax to McLean on a Saturday afternoon to arrive at 5:02 before the store closed at 6:00. But not so fast! A small, handwritten sign in the door read "Summer Hours: 10-5". As an employee unlocked the door to let a customer out, I pleaded "Please, can I buy a lampshade? I know what I'm looking for and I drove 45 minutes to get here!" She said gruffly "We're closing." I worked my way through school in retail. I get it. Customers like me are really annoying. But I stayed open when someone was clearly ready to spend money. I guess the giant lamp in my hand suggested I was not merely browsing, so when I begged one more time, "Really, 5 minutes is all I need. Please. I'll be out fast", she took pity on me--for which I was very grateful. She helped me find what I was looking for in 5 minutes. The store didn't have the size I needed in stock, so she wrote up an order ticket and said the shade would be in by the end of the week. Success! After two weeks I hadn't heard anything, so I called to check on the order. After someone picked up, I waited on hold for five minutes. When I was able to talk to a kind gentleman, it too another 10 minutes on hold before he told me he couldn't find any record of my order and would call me back. An hour later I got a voicemail saying they had no order in my name, but if I'd come back they'd be happy to place one for me. I found the perfect silk shade a week later. TOOK EIGHT MONTHS TO NOT FIX MY LIGHTS. AVOID. A long time ago I brought them a lamp with a broken dimmer switch to repair and they did an OK job. The dimmer switch worked but someone forgot to include the tiny screw that stops the entire dimmer switch from screwing off the lamp. Still, the next closest lighting repair store is in DC so I thought that I would give them another chance. This was a mistake. I dropped off two chandeliers requiring work at Lamps Unlimited in APRIL 2012. They told me that they were busy and wouldn't be done until May. I travel a lot and agreed to wait. By June I hadn't heard from them so I called and they promised to check the status of my pieces and call me back. No one ever called. Two weeks later (July) I went there, they discussed STARTING the work and charged me 460 dollars for parts. I paid. By August they still hadn't started. In September they did not return my calls. Someone would answer, promise a call back with an update, but no update ever happened. By October I lost patience again and went to to store. They promised me that they had ordered the parts but that someone needed to come to my house and measure the ceiling height (I already measured it and told it to them six months previously but I was happy to be flexible in order to ensure a good finished job. Someone came, measured and promised that they would call me next week to once they were done. He also tried to sell me an expensive crating and delivery service when my lights would fit in the back of my vehicle. The next week, no call. The week after that, no call. The week after, in NOVEMBER 2012, I went to the store and THEY HADN'T EVEN STARTED. They showed me that they had parts (only four months after I paid for them), but no work was done. I asked for a refund, took my lights and left. I had to go back again the next day though because they misplaced a chandelier section (their shelves are very full and my stuff was scattered throughout the store). ALL IN ALL, IT TOOK EIGHT MONTHS FOR THEM TO DO NOTHING. I took my lights to Artisan Lamp Company in DC that night. They charged me less and were done in two weeks. By the looks of it, their lighting selection is better too. My sister is doing the same - they had a lamp she brought in for repair for three months without starting. read more

Some of the people I interacted with at this store were friendly, and when the installation is done it is good. But-holy crap-it takes 6 months to get a hold of a particular technician I will keep anonymous through all modes of communication - email, calling, and more calling. And even after expressing this frustration, we got a sorry-you-feel-that-way- but-you-still-owe-this-whole-bill response. Their customer service is unprofessional and sloppy. I found Lamps Unlimited by doing a dealer search of the manufacturer of my existing fan. Rudy at the store was extremely nice and helpful. They have a great selection of all types of lighting and can order anything you want.
