Note to self, don't judge a book by its cover. Friends brought us here for hubby's birthday and it turned out worth the drive for early supper on Sunday night. The 3 story building is off to the side of a cute little street with Mom and pop shops and restaurants. Very quaint. The building itself is fronting an oversized parking lot. The inside looks more coffee shop than gastronomic gem, I was quick to judge. We were seated at a booth in the back. Perfect for intimate conversation and corraling a 2 year old. The quality and creativity of the dishes that came out of their open kitchen was surprising. The menu reads interesting and made it a bit hard to decide what to taste test. We tried the smashed potatoes, server said they were really good and he was not mistaken. We also had the tartare, beets and Labneh, the chanterelle dolma and the burger. Friends also had the fix and chips and the black cod. I'm always weary of people claim this is the best this or that, but thiñe burger is up there in my list, though burger is not something I usually order. Rather than the usual onion, lettuce and tomatoes, the burger was dressed with chicory Cesar. The Dolma was satisfying and the beats delicious. It's nice to have a restaurant focus on produce and have several vegetarian options available. The roof deck has great views of planes landing and departing into LAX, as an bona fide aviation geek that was a total treat. If you're in the Westchester area or near LAX this would be a good stop for a casual dinner.

Non-alcoholic cola in the front, a whiskey cocktail in the back

Tomat is a great farm-to-table restaurant that offers elevated dining that is unique to Westchester. They describe themselves as serving modern California cuisine with a diverse offering, which I agree with! A lot of the dishes feel aligned with English origins, which I love - also something we don't actually have a lot of in LA. Overall, the food was great, the service is very friendly, and the restaurant feels nice but homey at the same time. We went as a party of 2 and ordered the following: - 1 whiskey cocktail (I don't remember the name of it) and 1 non-alcoholic cola, which was delicious and refreshing. It was a nice blend of spices. - 2 starters - Barbari bread, roasted tomato butter and sugar snap peas, fried parsnips, garden herbs, kanzuri dressing. The bread is delicious! It is served warm with a toasted bottom and crunchy top. The bread itself had really good flavor, and the butter was nice and creamy. It is a pretty large portion. We took half of it home. The sugar snap peas tasted very fresh and clean. It was nicely balanced. - 1 side - Fenugreek roast potatoes. They were lightly smashed and lightly seasoned - perfect as is, but also great dipped in the seasoning that came with our mains. - 2 mains - Liberty duck, confit leg dolmeh, walnut mole and Berkshire pork collar, nectarine chamoy. The duck and pork were both cooked beautifully. The duck skin had a nice hard crunch. The other elements of both plates really showcased the California diversity that Tomat is aiming for. They weren't combinations that I've seen before, but everything went together and tasted great. - 1 dessert - Sticky toffee pudding. My favorite dessert in England! This is definitely big enough to share - still generous portion for 2 people, and in my opinion it could probably be shared with up to 4 people and be very satisfying. The flavor was everything I wanted it to be. The pudding is thick and dense. A bigger scoop of ice cream might be nice to balance the sweetness a little bit. The food was served at a pretty loose pace, which added to the comfortable but elevated homey feel for me. For example, the 2 mains arrived staggered and the side was served a few minutes after the 2nd main. This is not a complaint, just an observation. They had a few specials that sounded great as well - most of the special mains were made to serve (at least) 2. And in true farm-to-table fashion, the menu does change frequently. Our total bill was just under $200 for all of the above items for 2 people before tip. It's definitely possible to have a less indulgent and therefore less costly meal here, but it's also a great place to indulge if you want to. This was certainly a treat meal for me! The restaurant is clean and it was bustling but didn't feel crowded - the tables have a respectable amount of space in between them. Parking is as easy as it gets with a massive open free parking lot right out front. I'm really glad to have Tomat in Westchester, and I look forward to returning!

Since Tomat opened in the neighborhood, I've been really enjoying coming here for morning coffees (though I wish they opened a tad earlier!) Staff are always friendly, and they also have wifi and outlets to charge your laptop if you want to stay for awhile and get some work done. The ambiance here is chic and comforting. I enjoy looking at the art on the walls whenever I come. The coffee is always great here and I love that they have a few lower caffeine options, like hojicha. My only complaint about this place is that the markup for non-dairy milk with your coffee priced at $1.50 is crazy. Most coffee shops do 75 cents.

This may be one of my new favorite restaurants I've been to recently. Their menu is farm to table and has some inspiration from Japanese and European cuisines. The bread is a must have, everyone else was getting it and for a good reason. They also have specials on their menu that changes daily. When we went, they had a tuna collarbone, and it was one of the best collarbone dishes I've had I love the space of the restaurant as well, it's cozy and relaxed. It would be the perfect space to get dinner alone, but also grateful for small groups. During the day their space is a coffee shop , which I have not been to yet, but we will definitely be checking it out very soon.

It's like a duck tamal wrapped in an onion layer in a broth. Delicious and beautiful!

So much to love about Tomat! Where to begin??? Tomat is breath of fresh air in the Westchester triangle. They're self described as a "farm to kitchen" restaurant so you know it won't get any fresher! Pair that freshness along with chill vibe of lively music and the hustle of the staff...you've go yourself a good time. 1st off you'll want to start with their bread and butter. I think it's made with magic because it just leaves you smiling before the main course arrives. Entres... Off the top of my head...the Mole sauce with duck was perfection! Simply magical. I've also had a taste of their chicken plate and that's a must try too! So juicy and seasoned to perfection. Moving on...if there is one dessert you MUST try it is the trifle. Good lord! I dreamt about it for days. Highly recommended!!! Overall: They have a rooftop bar too and I'm looking forward to hitting that up next! There are still other plates I need to try at Tomat and am looking forward to sharing the photos with you. A must add to your list of dining experiences. Cheers!

Delicious pastries and drinks. Tried brunch for the first time, I personally thought it was egregiously overpriced. I've had the barbari bread before ($4) and I ordered the French toast and it was the barbari bread, just soaked in butter. . . The side of jam was nice but not worth $19. The Black Cod dish was yummy but also very expensive and not hot when served. The Tahini Cardamom Hojicha and Chai were delicious and worth every penny!

Met with a friend before they were flying out from LAX and found Tomat and decided to try it out. Would definitely like to come back for the Dinner Menu. Short drive away from LAX and there is plenty of parking which is a good thing. The coffee I decided to get was the Hijo Miso Caramel Latte, the flavor was a roasted flavor with some sweetness. It was pretty good so I also got one to go as well. We mainly were looking to grab and grab some coffee so this was perfect. The food we got was the duck with the thousand layer potato. The duck was done very well. The skin was crisp and the meat was flavorful. Falling off the bone. The potato was definitely one of the most unique things I've had in a while. The Chirashi consists mainly of smoked fish sashimi. Personal preference that I enjoy traditional sashimi but this was a nice change to enjoy occasionally. Ingredients did all seem very fresh. The ambiance and decor felt very cozy, being able to see into the kitchen and workspace definitely provides a very good vibe. Service was great, Nathan was very patient and helpful as it was our first time. Ethan also, very good service and friendly environment. Can't wait to come back to try the dinner menu.

I'd been eager to try TOMAT for a while, especially after all the buzz from local food blogs and websites made it one of the harder reservations to land in Westchester. After some persistence, we finally secured a table. TOMAT sits in a sleek three-story building in a strip mall, but once inside you realize how thoughtfully designed it is. The first floor houses the main dining room and open kitchen, the second level offers a private space and restrooms, and the third floor is an open-air patio where they host live music and events. It's nicely done all around. Parking, which is often a headache in this part of town, was plentiful and easy. We arrived on time and were seated promptly. The table was spacious, the seating comfortable, and the atmosphere struck a nice balance between modern and warm, upscale enough to feel special but not stuffy or too formal. To start, we ordered the Barbari bread with tomato butter, a sunchoke salad, and a pear salad. The menu changes frequently, but everything we tried was memorable. The Barbari bread was so good we ordered a second round. For mains, we had the lamb, the ribeye with rice, plus beets and potatoes on the side. While everything was cooked with attention to detail, the portions were surprisingly small for entrées priced at $50 and up. The ribeye was just three small pieces and came out very rare despite our request for medium rare. To their credit, they quickly refired it. The lamb, while tasty, was mostly bone and fat with only a few bites of actual meat. Our waiter, who was very friendly and attentive, had described the mains as suitable for sharing, but in reality they weren't even enough for one person. We were still hungry and ended up ordering the half chicken, which turned out to be properly sized and excellent. For dessert we tried the $19 sundae, which came in deconstructed form. The ingredients were clearly high quality, but the end result was a bit flat and not the special finish we were hoping for. The bill came to about $70 per person before gratuity. Overall, the quality was very good, and the space and service make it a nice place for a night out, but the main course portions left us disappointed. We'd consider giving TOMAT another try - especially since they do fun things like trivia nights on the patio - but it probably won't be our first pick for a return visit anytime in the very near future.

We were all so pleasantly surprised with the level of service quality of food, and how special they made me feel for my birthday. We ordered a cheeseburger for one of our friends because they wanted something simple but simple it was not. It was one of the best burgers we've ever had in our lives. They presented me with a sweet dessert and a card the the staff signed it to wish me a happy birthday. A really special evening. We strongly recommended this spot and we will be back for sure. One personal note about the stake tartar. If I see it on the menu and I've had it on six continents I will absolutely order it. One of my favorite things to have anywhere I go. The way it was served here was very original, but the rice cracker was overwhelming, and I couldn't taste the steak. Personally, I find this dish, such a delicacy, and just the steak on its own with light seasoning is a winner for me.

Forgot name- but wow. The flower petals... the zest of the greens.. the texture... adventurous and refreshing yet healthy

My sweet date took me here. He's really into good food and mentioned he was excited to have us eat here since it's been on his list. I think I was a little overdressed, I did wear a dress lol, everyone else wore casual clothes. I loved the food preserves they had, and the open kitchen. I enjoyed watching the cooks cook food over the hot fire log. The food was amazing, we both could not stop complimenting the dishes to the server and even the fresh in-house baked bread with the butter was a treat. The ingredients were so much of a farm to table vibe. The taste and ingredients with how they varied and complimented the protein or veggies.. everything was like a food adventure. You need to try this place if you have not yet. Great service too!!!! Attentive staff.

Came by for dinner and it was sadly a mediocre experience. Tomat is located right next to LAX and was newly added to the Michelin guide. Made a reservation for dinner and our table was ready upon arrival. Parking was available on the street and plentiful in the strip mall lot. Tomat is located in a gorgeous building featuring an open kitchen and modern dining room. They also have kitchen counter seats. Restroom and private dining room is featured on the 2nd floor. There is a rooftop terrace too. Staff throughout the evening were world class. Soft spoken, super cordial and easy to deal with. Service may have been the highlight of the meal. Started off with the Barbari Bread and it was a hit. Loved the contrasting crisp on the outside and the softness on the inside. The spread was phenomenal. The peach salad was excellent. Loved the contrasting textures and flavors. The green salad that the waiter suggested I thought was a miss. The sea bass collar was gigantic and was slightly different than a Japanese rendition. The skin was chewy and not so edible. The collar didn't seem super duper fresh, like in Tokyo, either. The black cod entree may have been the highlight of the evening and it was super fresh and the curry was excellent. The pork 3 ways course was a miss. Many pieces of pork came out cool to lukewarm and cooked to well done...bummer. The ribeye course was a small portion, and also came out cool...which was unfortunate. The duck course was good. Loved the meaty duck breast along with the super crispy skin. As the menu stated that numerous courses were designed for sharing, was slightly surprised that the mains weren't quite suitable for sharing, despite the appetizers and salads being shareable. ~$85/head after tax and gratuity for dinner.

Tired of IHOP? Denny's? Try changing your perspective and visit Tomat. Visiting this place in the morning was like getting a visual caffeine fix. The atmosphere. The decor. The whole vibe is so refreshing from the usual same O' same O'. And I didn't even check out what's upstairs. Every detail: from the ceramic coffee cup, the contemporary paintings, and even the open kitchen concept is well thought out. Service was great and our server was very helpful. Food-wise, the open-faced, smorrebrod was delicious. It paired well with my straight, black Americano. The only downside is the ceramic white coffee cup didn't have a handle. Although it looked very avant garde, it wasn't functional. Careful holding with your fingers.

If you live or visit LA I highly recommend dining at Tomat in Westchester (en route to LAX)! The chef is British-Angeleno with an Iranian grandmother. They grow produce nearby for the restaurant. They have a rooftop bar, special events, and breakfast. The space has acoustic tiles to dampen sound enough so you can actually hear your dining companions. Cocktails are innovative. Desserts are perfection and also creative. Every dish is composed from fresh, local ingredients and exceeds the descriptions. You will want to lick every plate. Everything is amazing. The kitchen is open so you can observe the staff. Gin contemporary art adorns the walls. The service was attentive without being obsequious. Check it out! Support a chef who treats everyone right and has enthusiasm for local sourcing and for his community.

However, I believe that having a comfortable conversation at a bar with live music is a contradiction, so no points lost there. My main issues with The Washington are as follows: 1) expensive 2) poor drink selection. These two issues are not independent as I am ok paying ~$20 a drink only if the cocktails are going above and beyond in some sort of way. For example, the drink has some sort of complicated syrups or uses some sort of unconventional technique that I would not want to replicate at home. However, you cannot really find creative cocktails here. And, on top of that, I also find a lackluster selection of drinks. I'm not entirely sure why there isn't more gin/vodka cocktail selection (I am well aware that they can make standard bar drinks that are not explicitly listed, but I am critiquing the lack of 'original drinks').

World-class musicians and a warmly-lit, beautiful space with great cocktails. They recently added empanadas to their menu and they are reaalllly yummy! Parking isn't usually a challenge and the crowd is full of to-the-bone music lovers. Be warned, this is not a spot to chat while the music is playing; the focus IS the music. Because they are also streaming and recording the sets, the crowd is pretty subdued. However, if you get there early, you'll have time to sip and socialize. Recently, the ticket prices have increased significantly, but it's still well worth the cost to support local talent and a great venue.

Seating is in comfortable armchairs. The bar is well stocked with some standards as well as rarities. Bartender is expert in turning out high quality spirits. Food is mostly appetizers, we had the empanadas which were OK only. Most people had nothing to eat. The attraction is the music which was quite good. As the room filled up, the sole server and bartender were working continuously and were hard to flag down. I wanted some coffee and ice cream that but couldn't get the attention of the server. After the concert, there was a line to settle up and then we had to leave. Sam First has a unique atmosphere but falls short on food and service. If you want some good jazz and drinks, it is a strong contender.

Server Álvaro is an actual SAINT at Saint & Second!…read more I want to start by clarifying that I went to S&S yesterday afternoon ready to cry major boo-hoo tears to my two besties, without much of an appetite. Instead, I ended up with a full belly and side cramps from laughing along with our awesome server, Alvaro. The Man. The Myth. The Legend that he is! Small Backstory: Last Friday I lost my job of almost 25 years in public education due to a complicated work accident (my back was broken & I now have screws in my spine) and I planned to whine to my best friends into a cocktail or two, and get out plenty of Kim Kardashian ugly-cry faces until it would be time to go home. Enter ALVARO! This kind man had the nerve to be polite to us! The nerve! LOL. He greeted us with a warm smile while my cold heart was practically making it snow. He explained all portions of the breathtaking menu when I had planed to eat my sadness. He even had the GALL to say if we wanted something not on the menu that he would see what he could do to make it happen! Here I was, ready to drink Unicorn Tears, and he was cheering me up! WHAT THE??! LOL The three is us started with the MEZZE PLATE. And OH LORD! I think we ate the print off of the plates while trying to get to the last crumb. We polished off a whole extra serving of cucumber slices in the process, by the way, and I'm not embarrassed to say that. The Turkish honey-sweetened labne was such a party in our mouths! Make of that what you will. Each of us got a dinner entre, with mine being the S&S Fish and Chips. I loved that the fillet was not overly battered and the chips had an almost double-Belgium fried taste going on. I couldn't help but swipe several spoons worth of aged-cheddar grits off a friend's seared pork chop plate. Now THOSE were some butter-heaven sent grits! My drink, that kept shooting partially through my nostrils from laughter, was a classic margarita on the rocks. No margaritas were injured/harmed in the process of my belly laughter. At some point towards the end of our night, a patron of the mall next door pulled the site-wide fire alarm, ringing through the whole location for everyone to use caution and head to the closest exit. If you grew up like my friends and I, you don't follow that suggestion unless you're trying to run out on the bill like a jerk. Bless be to Alvaro, he stopped by our table several times to apologize about the noise and flashing lights and explained the fire department was working on it. I explained that the Hood Cricket sound didn't bother us and we were happy to wait out the alarm. So not only did Alvaro provide us with excellent service, an outstanding meal, and generous smiles, but he also made sure that we felt SEEN. And THAT is what made the whole evening worth it. No sadness or cringey tears about a lost job were needed. It ends up all we needed was a server named Alvaro at Saint & Second to make my spirits feel high again. Pricing is a bit high but was totally worth it! Patrons were dressed business casual. Sound level, not counting the hood cricket, was mid and conversation was easy to have. Several televisions were playing different stations but no captions were provided. There is handicap parking available in the parking garage located just outside the front door of the establishment and no stairs or elevators are needed to enter. There are several entrances/exits to the available outdoor seating area and outdoor heaters are available. Glances around showed me that every patron I saw was tucking into their plates with smiles and were enjoying themselves. I have already made plans to return to S&S in another two weeks because it was indeed THAT GOOD! And for those fine diners that are wondering, "But what is a Hood Cricket?" An HC is a chirping fire-alarm that some of us are able to tune out with ease. You're welcome!

Although, the portion seemed small considering there is no side dish served with this. (Comes with 3 tacos). I will say that I was pleasantly surprised with how big their brunch menu is. They have a little bit of everything from avocado toast to pancakes to sandwiches. The service left a little to be desired. It seemed very slow even though we arrived not long after they opened and things were fairly quiet. It took a while to get requested items like creamer, receive our food and have our plates cleared.

Ordered two things: Guacamole: avocado + yuzu + jalapeño with three salsas and great chips. Bright, tangy, and not boring. Fish tacos: grilled fish with red/white cabbage slaw, pico, cilantro-lime aioli on corn tortillas. Fresh and satisfying -- solid execution. Also tried the elote off the cob (chili/lime/cotija) and it was exactly what you want it to be. Bonus: had a passion fruit mocktail that was genuinely delicious (name escaped me). Would happily come back -- 4 stars.

My compliments to the Spanish chef (you could really feel his Spanish influence in his food as well as Italian influence from his years spent living in Italy). Our server Josh was also a fine, pleasant fellow. The issue we had was more with the management (or seemingly lack thereof) and the excessive fees. This is the first restaurant I've ever been to that doesn't (or "can't") accept prepaid Opentable Reward cards - everyone who has an Opentable Reward card needs to proceed with extreme caution. Our server Josh did everything he could, but I believe the manager(s) could have done SOMETHING: they could have offered some gesture/compromise or at least come to our table to talk with us - to show some hospitality. Maybe I'm just comparing with my excellent managers at my restaurant, but I definitely noticed that at this restaurant. Regarding the excessive fees, the automatic 20% gratuity even for small parties is extremely excessive, I could see that possibly making some servers complacent - and that's not to mention that apparently there's another 4% or so wellness fee added on top of that. All in all, the server and food were quite good, while the management/manager(s) and fees were unsatisfactory. If you have an Opentable Reward card, go to any other restaurant.

The service was meh -- once we received our food, the wait staff never stopped by to check if we needed anything else nor refill our beverage. Also waited for at least ten minutes after we were finished eating before having to flag down the wait staff for the bill. Be sure to get your parking ticket validated. Also the pricing is a bit high -- not as affordable for a lunch menu.
