This was my first skeet shooting experience and I had an absolute blast (no pun intended). Thanks to Jang C. for introducing many of us to the sport. The Tom Lowe Trap & Skeet Range is located in Southwest Atlanta off of Camp Creek Parkway. What do you do here? Shoot clay pigeons with shotguns. It's a lot of fun. Various online deals have floated around for this skeet range. Groupon is one example. I bought my deal through Tippr. Some of the deals are advertised under the business name "Deshotel Arms," which is the gun shop located at Tom Lowe. It's the same place. If you don't have an online coupon, expect to spend about $25 for one round (25 shots). This price includes one round of targets, one pack of ammo (25 shells), gun rental, and eye and ear protection. Successive rounds are less expensive since you're only buying additional targets and ammo (and not re-renting the gun). If you have never gone skeet shooting or shot a shotgun before, I highly recommend going to the free beginner's class at 10:30am on Saturdays. The class is very short, but is important because it teaches you safety, what to expect on the range, and how to properly handle and operate a shotgun. If you plan to take the beginner's class, you need to show up on time as they do not accommodate for late arrivers. There are several shooting stations on the property. Each available station is manned by a Tom Lowe employee whom you give your token to. One token is good for 25 clay targets. The employee stands next to you while you shoot. When you say "pull," the employee launches a target into the air for you to shoot. There are different types of target shooting you can do. The standard one has you moving between six to eight spots on the field. In the beginner's target shooting round, you stand in one spot and fire at targets that move from the low house away from you and the high house towards you. These are easier because you don't have to follow/lead with your gun as much. It's more of a straight shot. Always wear your eye protection when you're on the range. You never know when a broken off piece of clay will come ricocheting towards you. It will leave a mark. Also, be firm with the shotgun, against your body and your face. Some of my friends got sore from the recoil of the shotgun because they were too relaxed in their setup. You want the gun to push your head and body back as a whole, not kick back up and smack you in the face. Men typically shoot 12 gauge shells and women/youth shoot 20 gauge. You can request differently, of course. I shot the 12 gauge because it was standard, but I heard from Christopher P. that it's easier to aim and more fun to use the 20 gauge shotgun. The instructors were nice, but the employee manning our station was not very friendly. It felt like he did not want to be there. We all wished we had a different employee. It wasn't too big of a deal, though, because we still had a great time. It's just like Duck Hunt. Now all they need is a dog that pops up and laughs at you when you miss. read more

Skeet and trap shooting is like golf with bullets. Like that sport's, such a range's environs can feel a bit like a clique; not necessarily as warm or welcoming to beginners as it could be. This is a problem with the shooting community at times, but straight up ironic for a business bringing in newcomers with Groupons--Groupons that portray, I should add--an instructor within arms reach of a shooter giving it a go. If you're going to target novices, support them when they show up. True, the old-school website advises beginner courses, but we didn't need classroom instruction on shotguns at our skill level. I can field strip many guns and my fellow shooter with me that day was a member of law enforcement and a certified firearms instructor. We just needed some very brief pointers, and specifics on the range rules would have been nice, or--if you're going to require specific cones of fire allowed in what appears to be a pretty wide-open area--maybe have your instructors mention that to people who are clearly out there for the first time. You don't want to be giving reactionary warnings that run counter to the logic of someone who has never shot trap or skeet before. It's human nature to draw a bead along a target, and to do so on a clear field of fire with no humans in harm's way. I don't prefer the range's approach of bundling groups up of people who are brand new to the sport with the Eddie Bauer range bag set, but I get why they do it--the range wait times would probably be stiff otherwise. Still, the second instructor we encountered, in the clay shooting area, was much more helpful and patient with us as we went through the motions, and overall the entire experience was a lot of fun. Pricing was pretty reasonable, all things considered, and subsequent rounds of shooting are substantially cheaper than the first outing, particularly if you brought your own ammo, as we did. 7 1/2 field and game shot seems to be a solid choice--word to the wise, any larger shot is restricted, out of understandable safety reasons. To their credit, when we finished the nice guy at the front desk did indeed ask if we'd had a good time, so it's not like people don't care. That's why I'm leaving feedback, actually--I think they'll take it to heart. We'll be back, but we'll probably specify our instructors next time, and I have a feeling that, plus the experience we got today, will mitigate many of my concerns. read more

I love this place! I was very nervous..went by myself and it was awesome. At first was a bit fearful..lots of camouflage and big guns..but the staff was very gracious and welcoming and it was tons of fun. This is probably one of the most fun places to go. They offer trap, skeet, and sporting clays. Seriously, a round of skeet shooting is more fun than a round of golf. The range is large and can accommodate a good number of people. The price is reasonable, and it can be the most fun you'll have that day. One word of advice: they are not newbie friendly if you don't take the beginner's class. I went to shoot some skeet with a bunch of friends of mine who haven't shot a shotgun before. And the person operating the clay throwers was a major bi0tch. She even hassled me even though I was the only one that knew how to shoot skeet. I mean I was still a beginner, but I knew what was going on. Granted, it was my friends' fault for not arriving on time for the beginner's class. Because of that, I had to teach them the basics of shooting and safety lessons cold. But I wished the people operating the clay throwers would be more patient with us. I tried to make friendly conversation with her, but she was being cold and very difficult. Also, she kept telling me to take a private lesson. She should not be trying to sell me the private lesson ($65/hr) if she was treating me like a dirt bag. That pissed me off worse. Speaking of which, do NOT be late to the beginner's class. Wake up early and arrive at least 10 minutes early. The class starts every Saturday at 10:30 AM sharp. If you arrive a minute late, they lock the doors. And you'll look like a retard if you do come late. Otherwise, the beginner's class itself is great. They go through everything you need to know about shooting clay. It is the perfect class and you'll have a lot of fun. The instructor is extremely cool and friendly--a stark contrast to the people that work the throwers. I would give them 5 stars if it weren't for that person making our lives miserable. But it's too fun to give them anything less than 4. I just hope the next time, it would be a better experience. So if you're a total newbie, take the beginner's class one or two times. Then once you're used to hitting the birds, try the real stuff out. It's even better. read more

How much do I love shooting guns? Way way much, yet i had never tried sporting clays, trap, or skeet (aka. Awwwe skeet skeet skeet skeet.) So when my brother asked if Iwas down for sporting clays at Tom Lowe I of course said "YEAH!". The place is not close to Marietta, where I live, but was not difficult to get to either. We all live in Atlanta, and know that anything worth doing is usually a short drive away. 4 boxes of shells, 4 rounds of Trap, 2 gun rentals, and some other things that i didnt look at were a little less than $80, so it isnt super inexpensive but Id rather spend a couple of hours shooting with a friend than say go to a club and get a couple of drinks. I would fully recommend showing up for their free noob lesson (we didnt) as Im sure it will help you be a much better shot than either of us were. I only went 25 for 50, but for my first time with no instruction I dont think it was too bad either. read more

I sort of can't believe I"m writing this review, but here it goes. Let me say first of all, I believe in gun regulations in the home, privately owned, but I have NO problem with shooting guns at a professionally staffed center. Plus these were 2 shell shotguns. I like bowling a lot, but I don't have a bowling alley in my house. It would be okay to have 1 bowling ball, but it's not like I need a whole alley. So with that.... This was so much fun!! I've shot guns before a couple of times, but we had our own private tutor...or that's how it felt anyway. I went on a sunday afternoon with 2 girls visiting from the north who wanted to do something particularly southern - ie shoot guns. I liked that it was shot guns and clay skeet. There was a challenge and we succeeded. Really affordable to rent the gun and we bought just one box of shells which was enough for our first try. Everyone was super friendly and nice for us beginners and I only left with a tiny bruise - but that's not from any of the staff ;) I'll be back with more fresh northern meat soon! We lucked out b/c we were waiting for a round to be over when all of a sudden, one of the range operators came over and asked if we just wanted to shoot at targets. Perfect for beginners! He was very helpful and nice to us and I'm guessing we were helping him test new equipment at the same time. This is probably the only place to shoot skeet\trap in atlanta and it helps that they're not taking advantage of the public. Very nice and patient people. Good job guys! read more

I have been a loyal customer of Tom Lowe Shooting Grounds since the Olympic flags were along Merk Rd. Last week I noticed some strange behavior from an employee. Very weird like maybe Crack use and the person was let go before for same thing..This should be a warning for ALL until there are mandatory drug tests on employees..Guns and drugs don't mix and yes I DID NOTIFY MANAGEMENT but no action to my knowledge. Disclaimer: I have never shot a shotgun before. My New Year's Resolution was to conquer my fear of guns and learn to shoot! So when a Groupon appeared for Tom Lowe, I snapped two up - one for me and one for my gun enthusiast hubby. We went on a Wednesday night around 4:30. Our Garmin took us a super weird way, but its literally right off Camp Creek Parkway. Super easy to get to! It wasn't very crowded for a Wednesday night, but you could tell the folks there were happy regulars. Everyone was in a good mood. David behind the counter is a sparkling gem. What a dearheart. This place is a Beretta mecca so my hubs was in heaven. I snagged the most supersoft half-zip Beretta fleece (as I was a bit chilly) and its my new fave. For $40, I thought it was a steal! David was helpful in selecting the best shotgun for my size, gave a super cool vest to carry my ammo, and sent us on our way to Judy. I was a caught a little off-guard at first as we were paired up with a guy in overalls and an eye patch who looked like a rough version of John Malkovich, but he was super encouraging to me, the first timer. Oh Judy. What a star. She is a talent indeed. She was so helpful to me, the naive first timer, and made me feel right at home. For that, there aren't enough thank you's. She taught me everything about shooting skeet and made it so much fun. I went to shoot one round and ended up shooting 3. Judy coached me to shoot a 13 (out of 25) on my first time - I got so good that I could shoot the skeet as it exited the little house. She made me feel like an Annie Oakley rock star. And hubby thinks he created a skeet shooting monster. PULL!!!! I can't wait to go back. It was so nice to be outside, in a professional encouraging environment while challenging one of my deepest fears. I plan to go back with a group of girlfriends! Don't forget to tip!!! PULL!!! That was me. Demanding my next target and missing another one. Oh well, I still had a blast. The girls and I came here one weekend and it was such a treat. We had no clue what we were doing, but they quickly made us feel comfortable with everything. The guy at the counter was very accommodating of our nervousness and assured us that we would be okay. Guess what? We were! We sucked horribly but we had a good time doing so. And, if I woke up the next day with a couple of bruises, so what? I called them battle wounds. And I wore them proudly. They provide everything you need to shoot and all at a very reasonable rate. We used some groupons that we had, so the rate was even more reasonable, but I would have paid full price, regardless. It was that much fun. And it's not too far outside of the city. So, a nice little drive south and then you're off to shoot (and hopefully not like us) orange targets in the sky. This was so much fun! Just as a background, I had never shot a shotgun before coming here and it was so much fun. Our instructor gave us a little orientation and taught us how to hold the gun so we wouldn't get hurt. The instructors are very friendly, very nice, and very knowledgeable. Went in a group of about 8 people and we had enough time and rounds to really get some good shots in. You don't need experience to shoot the guns and it's pretty likely that you'll hit something while you are there. Don't worry about the kick, even tiny people can shoot the guns and have fun. They also can accommodate you if you have a lot of experience and are a good shooter. You can go with a group of people who have diverse experience and really have a great time. They also have cold beverages to keep you hydrated out in the heat! Great fun! read more

Luke - thank you for replying. Please note a few things: I realized my field bag was missing when I went to put away my ear protection and glasses after shooting and before we left the property. We spoke to an employee at your shop that took our number and description of the items so we could be contacted in case someone turned them in. I guess that was not shared that with you. The staff I shared the information with was empathetic and even came out to the lot to help us look in, on top of, under and around the vehicle before we ever backed away from the space. The bag was not there. He apologized for the loss, but said you guys would call if something was turned in. When we got back home we realized the second set of chokes were missing and called back to the shop, to let the same staff person know and they asked that we follow up with you to make you aware. I can assure you it was not on top of the vehicle when we drove off. It is unfair to you, your employees and to your customers for me to speculate who walked off with my stuff. That said, I have shared what happened with a few other shooters I know and a guy I know who owns a range and they all said "That is odd, I would make sure the owner is aware". You are 100% correct thefts happen all the time. I have had stuff stolen from before and will no doubt have stuff stolen from me again. I should also know by now that if you want to limit how much it happens to you personally, you keep your stuff locked up and out of eyesight. In the end this experience was unfortunate, inconvenient, and apparently my own fault. It has also forever shaped my opinion of your facility which is also unfortunate and inconvenient. read more

As a woman with limited shooting experience, I was a little intimidated to try skeet shooting for the first time. However, Tom Lowe made it a very easy, and even enjoyable experience. You can get everything you could possible need there (from shotgun to ear plugs), but I recommend bringing your own sunglasses as they require some sort of eye covering. They definitely have a focus on safety, and they host free classes for beginners on Saturday mornings. It's not a cheap way to spend a morning, but if you're looking for a way to improve your marksmanship in a safe, clean, and female friendly environment, Tom Lowe is the way to go. read more

I would go here on a date. In fact, I did. (Yes, I take my wife on dates. All the time!) You do not need to know how to shoot. You do not need to own a shotgun. You do not need to have shoulders of steel to handle the recoil. All you need is a morning or an afternoon, someone fun with whom to enjoy the experience, and an interest in learning something new. I learned something new. I learned that my wife is a much better shot than I am! The range guide, who operates the targets, cycles the shooters, and generally runs the activity, invited me to stand behind my beloved spouse to observe how I should be shooting. There were 6 people in our group, and he had to pick her... It made for a great date! Shooting skeet is surprisingly hard. It involves shooting at little clay discs, called skeet, that launch from spring loaded lever things. They are difficult to hit. They just keep moving, and won't stand still so you can shoot 'em. Most of my skeets got away. If the taste of defeat is too much, they have a small restaurant where you can sit on the porch and watch the shooters while enjoying BBQ and burgers type food. Wolf Creek is clean, friendly, safe, inexpensive, a whole lot of fun, and located in a beautiful part of the countryside near Atlanta. read more

I've been to Tom Lowe over 20 times and that is a fairly remarkable feat. I've gone from having never shot a shotgun to considering myself a fairly decent shot with high scores on both Trap and Skeet. A bit of background on Tom Lowe - the facility was built for the '96 Olympic shooting events and is definitely a great facility. They have a small shop (authorized Beretta dealers), snacks, and on the weekends burgers and hotdogs! For those who shoot, Tom Lowe offers three shooting possibilities: Skeet, Trap and Maze Clay (a mixture of 5-stand and Sporting Clay, that was invented and premiered at Tom Lowe) For the beginners they have the Saturday clinic which is a fairly straight forward way to enter the sport. Tom Lowe also hosts several Trap and Skeet leagues and they actually welcome beginners to join! My greatest advice and compliment of this fine location is there amazing service and staff - take advantage of it! They are amazingly helpful and understand that not everyone is an expert on shotguns or their respective sports. If you have a question don't hesitate to ask! I have brought countless friends (those who have shoot, and new comers alike) and everyone has loved it. If your up for an adventure (and a bit of a drive) head over to this place for a great time! read more

I have been to a few skeet ranges. So I think I can make an educated recommendation about this place. PROS: I think the general business model for this place is pretty good and it definitely offers the following advantages: 1. Rent a shotgun. It's nice that you can rent a shotgun on site, which makes it so that you don't have to own one to shoot. 2. Pullers always on site. The coolest thing about this place is that there are always pullers available (staff members), so you can go shoot some skeet on your own without having to worry about who's going to pull for you. These guys offer shooting tips and keep you safe in the range. CONS However, I think this place needs vast improvement in their management and their customer service focus. Let me tell you why I have been so disappointed about this place. I have 4 incidents that I can concretely point to which have left me with a bad taste. 1. It is 7:35pm (mind you, the range closes at 8:00pm on weekdays) and the puller calls for a last round. Seeing that I am really getting into things and since the puller would be happy to pull for two guys (me included), I decide to go to the counter to get a token (this gives you 25 birds/clays to shoot at) and a box of 25 shells. I get to the counter and the response from the cashier is "no more rounds, we're closed". I respond by saying "Really? The lady said that she's going to have one more round," but the cashier responds "I close the register at 7:30pm, so no more rounds". I don't think this is the right mentality to have in order to keep customers happy. 2. It is 6:02pm and there is a group of 5 people (me included) shooting their last round. We're at station 7, which means we only have one more station to do (there are 8 stations in skeet). However, the cashier comes out and scolds the puller, ordering him to stop the game (it's past 6:00pm and the range closes at 6:00pm on weekends). None of the 5 people get to shoot their last two birds. Again, if I pay for a round, I expect to get my 25 shots. We all got short-changed because, again, Tom Lowe is more focused on something else besides customer satisfaction. 3. Even if you're the only person shooting in the range, you are not allowed to do anything besides the structured sequence of shots specified by the skeet rules (i.e. you are not allowed to practice one station or to take any shots besides what the rules of skeet say). Again, this makes me feel that the range is so inflexible that they do not care to accommodate special requests (i.e. not a customer-focused environment). 4. Can't share a shotgun if shooting trap. Therefore, you must rent shotguns if you don't have enough for your group. CONCLUSION I wish there were some other skeet range or some gun club with skeet facilities around the Atlanta area. I have been to other ranges in the country and they tend to be much more oriented to helping and accommodating the shooter (i.e. the customer) than pushing their training classes and just being generally unflexible. These last two points are definitely characteristics of Tom Lowe's. However, if you don't expect excellent customer service, you will not be disappointed by this place. The Saturday morning beginner class is a great deal for those who have never shot a gun before and just want to try it out. For a little under $20, you get a short intro/safety class, gun rental, safety glasses, ear protection, and 25 shotgun rounds. Our entire beginner class was about 10 people of varying skill levels and entire process was super easy and fun. You'll be doing some skeet shooting with the help of an instructor, who will be loading your gun and helping you hit those targets! If I were to go again, I would definitely feel comfortable to just rent a gun and buy some rounds to shoot for most of the day. I don't think I'd want to do the beginner class again, but it stands as a great value to those who want something fun to do Atlanta and have never done anything like it before. It's a definite must try if you are in Atlanta and isn't a far drive at all from downtown. read more

Very nice experience. First, I had a doubt in myself and as I consumed the ammo, I actually got better and gained confidence. Friendly staffs and reasonable price. On this specific date, beginner's class was packed because couple of groups joined. If this becomes a trend, they may have to consider taking appointment. Talk about a class act of a shooting range! I'm still very new to trap/skeet shooting and while I've been to several outdoor ranges, this one is my favorite. I absolutely love the lodge area where you can just relax and watch others shoot. The guys behind the counter are friendly and the guys on the range are just as good. If you're on the range on a quiet day, they're more than happy to give you pointers or help you out some. The class is pretty good - though with my class it was somewhat big so the shooting portion definitely slowed down quite a bit. Before I took the class, I shot trap 10/25 and 6/25. After the class - 20/25, 19/25! If there was anything to complain about it would be there should be an area for more free shooting with pump/semi's and voice activated pullers (other places charge by the box in this case). Right now range rules are strictly one in the chamber or two for doubles. (EDIT to above statement: RANGE ONE allows you to shoot, learn/practice, and pattern your gun! I was told this by another shooter and confirmed with one of the employees!) One of these days I'll definitely buy a nice Beretta over/under that I keep drooling over every time I'm there! read more

Not sure where is the alternative, but I have been here a few times now. The first time I came, the person who was running the shoot was less than interested in what he was doing. Zero help with the shooting. Basically I just stood there and wasted my time shooting randomly in the air. I had no guidance and hadn't done it before, so it basically seemed like a giant waste of time. I had been told that the beginner's class was a good deal and was a great way to learn how to skeet shoot. The first 30 min or so were just safety, which was not bad. We went out to the field and got split into two groups. There were about 20 people in our group, only about 10 in the other group. Our instructor couldn't figure out how to get the machine working, wasted 15 minutes waiting for him to see if it was plugged in... When we finally got started, it took forever to get through each person. I would say this is because we were getting really good one-on-one help, this wasn't really the case. We were told about where to hold the gun then basically that was it. After shooting the first time (he told me I was using the wrong eye, so I switched hands), and missed everything, another person in the group told me that my stance was backwards... not sure why the instructor didn't pick up on this at all, but I was completely standing the wrong direction. Another girl in the group was leaning so far back, she almost fell over when she shot. She gave up after two rounds as she said it hurt too much (i'm sure it would i you were literally being knocked back 8 inches). The intro group lasted over 4 hours and was a total waste of time. To have this be at all worth it, they should have limited the size of the group to 10 or something. Gave it 2 stars because the facility itself is nice. read more

We bought the Living Social voucher. Great deal but the experience wasn't so great for my first time. I called asking about getting some training since we couldn't make the morning training. The person answering assured me that I would get training no matter when I came. The place is completely disorganized. The front desk cashier is really nice. However, he was plucking customers who he pegged as experienced gunsmen to help him at each station. Then we got our shotguns with no directions or ID required. We were even told to use our sunglasses instead of protective eyewear. Our "instructor" literally grouped us with an experienced gunsman and off we went shooting. No instructions, no this is how you load, this is how your shoot, aim here. It was pretty obvious that we were city folks. We could have injured ourselves or for that matter others bc we had no idea what we were doing. read more

We (4 ladies) visited the trap range today and it was so much fun! We were assigned a nice coach who was with us while we each shot a box of shells. The facility is nice and clean, every employee we spoke with was nice to us newbies, and very helpful. I can see where this range might be addictive. lol It's away from hustle and bustle of Atlanta yet very convenient to get to off Camp Creek Parkway. The equipment we had was all in good shape, and our coach kept us safe throughout the visit. The parking lot was well maintained and some of the spaces are in shady areas. I will definitely return and try to beat my score from today. read more

I've taken my 14 yr old son here twice and it is awesome!! Both times we went he has had an absolute blast and is eager to come back again. The first time we came was with the groupon a few months back, but we had so much fun that I ended up letting him shoot 7 rounds (of 25 shots) while I shot 4 rounds. Somehow I was the one that ended up bruised and battered though! The other customers at the field were great and really encouraging to him since it was his first time shooting trap, but he did excellent. In 7 rounds, he never hit less than 14/25 and in his last round he managed to nail 21! Despite what others have said on here, the puller we had was pretty friendly. No he didn't talk a lot during the shooting, but he didn't taunt us for bad shooting or anything like that like others have said. We even shot next to a woman who only hit 1 out of 25 and he tried to give her some tips before her next round. My son had been begging me to go back so a couple of weeks ago, I finally took him back and he shot another five rounds to my three and we had just a good of a experience the second time (Although this time he had a round of only 9 hits so he kept trying to figure out what went wrong) Again the other shooters were really friendly and helpful. The puller was pretty nice although he didn't talk to much. I suppose he thought everyone was experienced so he didn't need to say very much. The front desk guys are pretty friendly and talkative as well. I will say that the second time I brought shells with me to save a little money and they didn't bat an eye. That was really nice that they weren't trying to shame us into buying shells there. I really think its because they enjoy the sport and want to see others enjoy it too. I would definitely recommend coming out here if you want to try trap shooting. We haven't done the skeet, but for beginners, the trap shooting was worth every penny. read more
