I don't understand all the Tokyo House animosity on Yelp. First, remember, it's Bellingham...so (for reasons I don't completely understand) you are just not going to get the quality or variety of sushi that you do in the cosmopolis of Vancouver just to the north. But if you're in town, and you have that sushi craving, Tokyo House does a great job. I prefer it to Kuru Kuru when I'm out with friends who don't like sushi, becaue their cute little conveyor belt holds lots more than just sushi - everything from fruit to drinks to these delicious bacon-wrapped shrimp that I just cannot get enough of. Their prices are good, too. The hubby and I can get in and out of here for appy's for around $20 total, and we're full. The service is really friendly, too. Do I wish they had a better selection of sushi? Yes. But I could say this about any restaurant in town. If I want amazing sushi, I gotta head north. read more

I've been here twice in the past month and both times, the food has been very good. The belt sushi is gone, and it's no longer serving just Japanese food. The Stone Pot Korean restaurant that used to be on Magnolia Street is now here, and sushi is made to order. My first time here, my business partner and I came in for the Korean food and were lucky enough to be served by the owner. He was very pleasant, talking with us about various subjects while waiting for our food to be prepared. The food was excellent... especially the kimchi, which he told us was made on site. We enjoyed one of the Korean wines available, too. The second time, my picky teenagers came along. While they like Korean food well enough, they really like sushi and can be hard to please with it. I was delighted that they enjoyed their selections as much as I enjoyed my beef bibimbap. Our server this time was a young Chinese man who was very attentive, and pleasantly chatty at appropriate times. We hadn't been to Tokyo House in its belt sushi incarnation, so I can't compare it today with how it was then; but I can say that we all liked everything very much, and it was a very good value. We'll definitely be back. read more

Excellent, the food and the staff are awesome and knowledgeable. The pickled onions are the best in the universe.

Wanted to try out this place but unfortunately the food (at least as takeout was really not good). The chicken teriyaki was rubbery and had a sauce that doesnt match what would be called teriyaki anywhere else (aka it wasnt sweet at all). It also came with a salad in a bag (I know that it's a presentation thing but it looked gross like that). Also got jap chae which I figured must be good but it was quite dry and meat wasnt very good. We also got sushi which my partner wasnt a fan of either but I thought it was ok. read more

Really good sushi with a huge variety of appetizers, entrees, desserts, and drinks. Plus it was soooo inexpensive for sushi let alone any other lunch/dinner place. The way things were priced were confusing at first, but I get it now. Also the timid girl who served us kept on forgetting our orders and didnt know how to spell edamame. read more

Had I been going by Yelp reviews alone, I'd have passed this place by. Thankfully, it came recommended from someone I trust. We went in for dinner and were greeted with a happy face -- shown to a table and our waitress arrived just moments later. We ordered drinks and spent the next few minutes watching the various items go by on the conveyor belt. Once our drinks arrived my husband ordered a beef terriyaki Obento box, which was flavorful and incredibly tender. It came with crispy yet moist potstickers, some delicious tempura, tender rice, a savory salad, and some California rolls, which were made to perfection. We shared the Obento box but also grabbed various things off the conveyor: several different plates of sushi rolls, some rangoon looking things, and a seaweed salad, which was something I'd never had before and enjoyed. We liked everything we chose. Everything that scooted past us on the conveyor belt looked freshly made. I don't know how they do it, but everything appeared great and items like avocado looked firm and green. Maybe we got lucky, but negative reviews of this place scared me based on accusations of dried and icky/old looking food. I saw none of that on our visit. Our waitress was very friendly, answered far too many of our first-timer questions, and was attentive. We will definitely be back, and if future visits are met with the same quality as this one, this place has a high probability of hitting our favorites list. read more

If you are looking for a good Korean food in this town, this place is a great alternative. I visited this place last week during my family trip. Not much expected, but their food and service was far better than I expected. We had a spicy tofu soup, stone bowl bibimbob, doenjang jjigae(hot miso soup), and calamari. All were great. read more

Bad service! Avoid this place at all cost! The food is bad!!! Food is plain, with about 2-3% of what you actually order ie eel. NEVER VISITING THIS PLACE AGAIN! EVER!!!!! read more

My partner and I got takeout and we split tofu teriyaki, avocado roll, and pickled radish roll. We really loved the tofu teriyaki! It perfectly satisfied our craving and we really liked the texture of the tofu and the sauce. Highly recommend as a non meat option! The rolls were great too. It was more than enough food for the both of us but we powered through because it hit the spot. The tofu teriyaki was priced fairly too. I believe it was $9 compared to $13 at other places. read more

Tokyo House has been on Garden Street for many years...and I had never visited. It's an unusual location and the looks are misleading (it doesn't look like much). A month ago, they installed a conveyor belt for sushi. We're big fans of sushi served in this manner so we added it to our list. (We only been to 1 other place in town for conveyor belt sushi.) We were greeted by a boisterous "irasshaimase!" and a friendly waitress directed us to an open table on the conveyor belt. The plates on the conveyor were double stacked (clever!) fresh fruit, traditional rice flour deserts, and some hot foods, too. We're fans of sushi (fingers of rice with cuts of fish on top). There were a few varieties (salmon, tuna, shrimp, and whitetail) in addition to vegetables (seaweed salad, pickled cucumbers) and a few rolls, too. We were impressed with the quality and variety of sushi available. The plate costs start at $1 and go up to $3.50 (maybe higher?). We like the simple things, so we tend to choose the $1.50 and $2 plates. The wasabi is runny...like a gel. Kinda weird. And it doesn't mix well with the soy sauce, they quickly separated until mixed again. We found the service to be friendly and responsive. We were provided miso soup and checked on regularly. We did not order off the menu, though we could have. The other conveyor belt place in town is now so successful, we always must wait to get a spot. Tokyo House may be our new favorite alternative! read more

Really excellent food. Fairly bare bones interior but who cares with food as delicious and as plentiful and as good value as this? And when one goes to the more fancy, foofy sushi joints one runs the risk of being mistaken for a member of the bourgeoisie and rightly slammed up against the nearest wall on that glorious day. I had teriyaki chicken and, lo, it was good. read more

To begin with the waitress was a little bit distant and seemed a little overwhelmed he seemed but they did not have enough staff food is excellent and the price was very good we will be coming back read more

Horrible. Went here with my boyfriend and ordered sushi and he ordered chicken teriyaki. After waiting almost an hour our food finally arrived. His was in a nasty gummy, gel like sauce, and the chicken was way over cooked in small tiny pebbles, yuck! My sushi tasted old, not fresh, and I complained, they did give me a 50 percent discount. Service was extremely slow, confusing menu, horrible dirty run down decor, torn up nasty carpet, the outside looks very old and tired. I'd avoid this place altogether, guess the other reviewers that gave it a 5 star have iron stomachs. read more

There was a time when this place was a shining star in a town lacking of sushi establishments. In a growing city this place is not staying with the times. The last two times I have been here I have been sorely disappointed. Most recently we were the only people in the restaurant, the conveyor belt consisted of questionably old California rolls and ice cold appetizers. When we requested a little more variety we were told by the chef that the only way he would make anything else was if we paid full price (plate price times 3) for whatever we ordered. We ordered some stuffed jalapeños and edamame, the edamame was overcooked and the shells were freezer burned. We decided to leave. read more

This place is amazing. The woman who usually is the server. I'm not sure if she is also the owner? I hope she is you can tell she puts her heart and soul into every interaction. If you go even a few times she will remember what kind of banchan you prefer. I always get the beef stone pot bibimbap. Usually they get the stone pot hot enough to make it crispy, I have had to ask them to make it hotter before but not often. Their gimbap is amazing as well. Even though the name is Tokyo house I prefer the Korean food here. The establishment is clean and well cared for. I've had Korean at the new place and this place outshines them on every dish. read more

We eat here about once a week, but that is about to stop. We had terrible service tonight from a man named "Mike", being given hibachi mayonnaise (for dipping chicken and vegetables) instead of the usual ginger salad dressing. This wouldn't have been a big deal at all, but when we called for a new salad, a man named "Mike" basically told us to deal with it, offering no help at all. He even argued with us that we should put the mayo on the salad and that we were wrong. We eat here EVERY WEEK, we know what the salad dressing is supposed to be, and it's one of the things we love. The arguing from staff was ridiculous, all we wanted was a correction, which we were willing to go get or pay for. This is unacceptable. "Mike" gave us horrible service, and therefore this business lost frequent customers today. I am sad for Elizabeth, who is always very sweet and gives excellent service. I hope she will give "Mike" a talking-to about how to deal with customers and food mistakes. He made a small problem a big problem with his bad attitude and arguing. read more

I used to LOVE this place beyond all love. Their food was awesome and their sushi was fresh. We went there earlier and were the only people in the place. Our miso was overcooked, the chicken katsu was almost black, and the sashimi was absolutely terrifying. I had to douse it in lemon to get the fishy (Not the good kind of fishy) flavor off of it. It tasted like it'd been left out on a counter for hours, and I've never had fish this un-fresh. Not going back, and the whole thing cost us $40. read more

Good service, good food, will come again. It is a Korean restaurant and a Japanese restaurant under 1 roof & 1 menu, they used to be separate restaurants but they combined. The owner guy is cool. However you only get 4 of the Korean side dishes whereas others places give you a lot more with a lot more variety. read more

Don't recommend going here for sushi and bubble teas. I ordered a coffee bubble tea and it tasted like tootsie rolls and the bubbles were under-cooked. The staff spent more time reminding our waitress to be more helpful rather than being helpful. The spicy tuna made me throw up. They had good sesame balls read more

I went out with my friend and we ordered ddeokbokki, galbi, and sundubu. So boom, I love ddeokbokki and this ddeokbokki the sauce is great and the fish cake is great and they even add a gyoza, all they're missing is an egg and also the ddeok is not cooked long enough, and too overpriced for the small portion. I would not recommend the sundubu jjigae (Kim chi stew). The soup had undercooked tofu and had a strong sesame oil aftertaste. We got two free rice bowls for both dishes, however, it was old and dry. The galbi was average, I believe if they marinated it a little longer it would rise up but it wasnt bad and everything overall wasnt bad, for bellingham I'd say it's pretty good. I'll be back to try other dishes. read more

Awesome food and service. The servers were extremely nice and helpful. Never met previous owners but the new one is awesome. He made effort to come out to each table and get to know everyone. Absolutely phenominal spot. Both a korean bbq and sushi bar. Went for the sushi and was NOT disappointed. Limited choices for eel based sushi but all in all a great experience. Lots of ways to modify your order and truly make it what you want. Everything on their menu sounded amazing. Ate till i was stuffed and it was super reasonably priced. Date night for under 50 AND we had chicken katsu leftovers. 2 sesame balls were provided for free as dessert which was so nice, and all in all I'd absolutely come back when in town. read more

Super surprised to see all the negativity toward the Tokyo House... Teriyaki/yakisoba/gyoza etc... best in Bellingham in a landslide. I kept saying that Bellingham should have a Korean BBQ restaurant, only to find this near my house!! Amazing! I go here often and very saddened to see them slow most of the time. I want to give them more business because their Korean food is sooo good and they are friendly people! Wait times can be a tiny bit long sometimes, but you quickly forget about it once your food comes. I understand why though; It wouldnt make sense to hire more employees when its so slow most of the time. Also, if you order sushi, they make it right on the spot. (Hence why it might be a tiny bit longer). Never pre-made. So you are guaranteed fresh sushi. I've been to many korean BBQ's, and these people are the most nicest I've ever encountered. The cook even comes out and personally makes sure your food was good. Go give these people some business! :-) read more

Great spot to find some traditional sushi. Delicious, affordable and the rolls are large. I'll be back very soon I'm sure.

Food and service was good, with the exception of the two sesame balls for desert that were decidedly rancid. Service was quick and friendly.  It helped that we were only the second table occupied in the place on Sunday afternoon.  I had to ask for the side condiments that Korean restaurants typically provide and the menu said were included with the food I ordered.  The wait person initially brought me a "salad" (lettuce) but happily got me the condiments when asked.   She said most people prefer the "salad".  The wait person also was clear to point out that all the éntrees were to cost a dollar more than the menus stated due to the recent rise in the minimum wage and the fact that new menus were still on order..  Go figure, Econ 101.   As I said, the food was good enough, BUT the cleanliness of the place was a bit off-putting.  The wait person was cleaning the table next to us with a big rag that looked as if it had just been used to clean car rims after a drive on a muddy road. The stand up drink menus on the table were sticky, spotted and streaked with unknown substances, and they have a great non-slip coating on the floors, as everywhere we stepped, our shoes stuck and came away with a bit of resistance and a sticky popping sound.  Oh, and there was a child about four tables away playing a video game on a tablet and excitedly and loudly carrying on with his cousin in some sort of live play.  This went on for our whole meal.  And, the door opening alert was playing Dashing Through The Snow. Luckily there was not too much traffic in and out.   So, if it was just the food it could have been 3-4 stars, with the noisy kid and door alarm, three for sure.  After the parting shot of the rancid sesame ball, the final two.   Perhaps a visit from the health department to council them on cleanliness would be in order... read more

Honestly, I do not consider myself a picky eater, or a critic, but this place was just all bad. I went with a party of three, got three chicken bentos, a sashimi plate, and two spider rolls; the bento box was ok, but did not seem freshly made; the salmon sashimi was frosted (AKA it was crunchy), the tuna had a watery, tofu texture to it; the spider rolls mysteriously had red bell peppers in it... Overall, very unsatisfying. Oh, and our bill was $75. read more

We would give this place a negative 1 if possible. The service was unattentive and seemed to not care about your experience. The sushi was really fishy and hard and cold (even when the menu said pan seared). So not fresh, it's as if they bought it from the clearance shelf of an already packed sushi from a grocery store. The worse part is when we had mentioned one in particular we could not choke down (as we never complain ever) the waitress said yeah and never offered to take it off, anything, so bad :/. Sorry Tokyo house, we tried to like you but I see why you have bad reviews now. read more

New owners, (used to own Stone Pot Korean downtown) and updated menu! VERY much improved and we have been several times. Favorites include the table top Bbq, the ddeok mandugok, and the kimchis. 11/11/14 - one star - If you don't know what "Check, please." means, then you shouldn't be waiting tables. I came at about one-thirty, within posted lunch hours. I left at two-thirty. During that time, there were two kinds of sushi already on the belt, about a dozen dessert plates, and six cold fried appetizers. The chef appeared once to add more fruit to the belt, and once after I had paid and was getting up to leave, to add some nigiri, which I would have tried if it had appeared during the hour I was there. My big issue was the waitress. It took her five minutes to even notice I was there. Then, out of ten tables, (3 occupied, all seating 4) she first brought me to a table next to the door on a windy, 35 degree day. When I asked for a table away from the door, she gestured to the other tables and said, "Whatever." I tried to order rolls off the menu, (which necessitates ordering the entire roll for 12+$, but I was hungry) and she was nowhere to be found. I picked at the meager offerings on the belt until I had exhausted everything that wasn't fried but cold or dessert. She finally came to replenish my tea, I said "No thanks, but check, please?" She nodded and left. A minute later, she's washing down tables behind me. One other table is occupied at this point. I stared at her for a good five minutes until she saw me, and said "Oh dear!". After seating a couple who came in, she finally brings the check and says "You can always come get me for check." Really...? read more
