I ordered the vegetable noodles and it came with egg all over the noodles. I am vegan and had to throw it away. And it smelled like wet dog too. The staff's personality was on the short side but maybe because it was closing time. They are not what they used to be before the pandemic, when the restaurant was four times bigger in size and the service was respectable. So if you're planning to come, maybe come before 12 or the wait may be a little longer than usual. I also like how they have specials for each day of the week which you can rotate if you come here on a more frequent basis. [SCORE & ORDER] OVERALL: 3.5/5 Caterpillar Roll $12.50 (4/5) -This roll actually surprised me and maybe it's because this had avocado on top (still the tempura in the middle). The flavor is what a normal caterpillar roll would taste like. And maybe I liked this more because there was avocado, but other than that, I would recommend getting this roll. The first bite I took out of the hamachi was room temp? and not cold which was sort of concerning to me. But the other fish was fine so I'm not sure what happened there. Oh another thing is that I think they have been cheating out because my impression of most sushi rolls is that there is avocado and imitation crab in the middle, but here it's all tempura... which is a HUGE disappointment. Have been coming to Tokyo Express for over 20 years, and the quality and taste have never changed. The portions are decent compared to other Japanese restaurants in downtown SF. The service is always nice and friendly because the owners are behind the counter, and they know how to take care of their customers. As long as I'm working in downtown FIDI, I'll continue coming here. read more

Tokyo Express, back in the early 2010's, used to be really popular with a line during lunchtime. Some of my old co-workers used to enjoy coming here. Business has sure when downhill since the pandemic. There was only one other table occupied at lunch time on a Wednesday. The staff was really busy however packing up to-go orders. I had their Wednesday special, the tonkatsu $13. The pork fillet was a bit dry and not juicy, tender and properly cooked. The panko had a nice crunch. It did come with an alright tonkatsu sauce. With this dish, it should come with shredded cabbage served with a miso-ginger dressing or Japanese sesame dressing, but it didn't come with it. Since this is not an authentic Japanese restaurant, I didn't knock off stars for that. Service was non-existent as this is an order at the counter style restaurant and no tea or water was served. We go here for convenience. The chicken teriyaki and salmon teriyaki are the best things to order, unless you get a very simple roll. The sashimi isn't the greatest grade of fish and doesn't seem fresh. The gentleman taking orders seems new so it's best to very clear exactly what you'd like. Came here last Friday and everything was great so I came back and I ordered a tiger roll which indicates the salmon is baked . It is in fact not baked but looks like it's torched and only at the top the bottom of the salmon was still completely raw . when I called to inform them in hopes of remaking it so I can enjoy jt I kinda felt like I was being gas lit the lady said "it's (the salmon ) not cooked well done we don't cook it like that. I said but it says baked salmon the bottom is completely raw , she said maybe you ordered the wrong thing , you don't eat raw sushi I tell her no , she says again we don't cook it well done " I just said ok . I love that they use grilled chicken in the soup, unlike other Japanese restaurant that use broiled chicken. The flavor is great and service is quick. The portion was generous for the price and the food was edible but would I order it again? Probably not. I had plenty of unagi donburi before and this is not the best one. First of all, if you are looking for high quality fish, this is probably not the right place to go. The frozen unagi I brought from Asia markets is better in quality than the one here. The eel here is really thin and the sauce is too sweet and thick for my preference. I got the white rice but you can substitute for brown rice. The rice is well cooked but it's not the good quality Japanese rice. Comparing to other unagi donburi I had before, I like that this place is very generous on the veggies. My friend and I went here for lunch today together for the first time. We were so happy that they had limited indoor seating during this shelter in place! The restroom was was also available to us! I really liked how they gave me a complimentary fried egg with my Unagi Donburi. My friend I really enjoyed sharing the California Roll Sushi. The food and Miso Soups were great. I was sad when I was told that this Tokyo Express location is the only one left--the 3 other ones on Mission, Battery, and Spear Streets closed down. Too bad this place is not opened on the weekends. After trying a bunch of stuff from Tokyo Express, I've decided that my favorite on the menu is their chicken teriyaki bento box! They make it good here and they give you TONS of chicken. Their chicken isn't dry at all! I kinda wish they would give you a little bit more rice to go with the chicken! Their bento boxes also comes with a salad and miso soup. While I was interviewing in San Francisco prior to getting my current job I ended up stopping by here just for a very fast bite in between interviews. The sushi was very inexpensive mid line quality that I would highly recommend if you are low on funds and just quickly need a snack. If all you're getting is an avocado roll or CA roll at $5 or less it won't break the bank. I would not recommend bringing a large group of people here as it is a smaller space that's mainly self serve after ordering, but I found the service to be friendly and welcoming. Box of well prepared rice, chicken terryaki, egg & radish + miso soup + side salad with that gingery sesame dressing. In 3 years in FiDi, I have not found a lunch I liked more at this price point. Takes less than 5 minutes, which gives me time to polish of 2 cups of complimentary tea. I don't like cheap sushi, but if you're into it they got plenty. Most things they offer have wide tolerances before they are considered bad... and generally for their price points in this hood, you don't complain. aka, you'll probably be very happy with the meal for the $. Pro Tip - Stick to the simple things probably prepared in batches... Tokyo Express crushes it on the corporate lunches / trays / bulk orders, so they have a huge economy of scale, helps assure the simple menu items with common components will be legit. This is my go to during the work week. I usually take lunch 1 to 2 days a week. Fresh, very affordable, clean and comfortable.

This is a great place for fast and cheap lunch. Their menu is overwhelming with so many options from sushi, sashimi and combo plates. The place gets packed, so come early. I'd like to describe the service as organized chaos. You order, take the number and grab a table. They serve you quick. Tables are in close zones from each other too, so if you have a personal bubble, you may be uncomfortable. I ordered the katsu curry plate with a dragon roll (way too much food). My friend ordered some nigiri and my other friend ordered some tempura and cali rolls. The sushi rolls are basic American rolls and not the best nor freshest I've had. While Japanese chefs do add wasabi to their nigiri, it's very minimal whereas this place packed it on and my friend had to wipe it off. The curry with the katsu wasn't the best either, it was more carrots and veggies than sauce, though it was still edible and quite delicious. Overall, this place is a decent place to go to for cheap and quick Japanese food with great amount of portions. Don't expect top quality stuff here, though. I'd come again. read more

Both were actually quite good. The egg was a little overcooked in the don but that is a minor complaint. It was steamy hot and fresh. The tempura was light and had very little taste of oil. The food was very flavorful and the service was very fast. Not five minutes after we ordered did we receive our food. My only complaint would be the serving sizes. The portions were a little small but other than that the food was excellent. Not super crowded however we did miss the main lunch rush hour. When I was a wee little kid, my parents introduced me to Japanese food. Much to their dismay, I spent the next few years of my childhood wanting to be a "sushi waitress." Especially if the perks included free green tea ice cream. Fortunately, those days have passed, and I still love Japanese food (and green tea ice cream). Which is why it's really annoying when Japanese-hunger-pangs hit me in the middle of the workday, and the closest place to my office is the Floating Sushi Boat place run by Chinese people in the middle of Chinatown. One day my stomach decided that it wanted some hot noodle soup. My first instinct was to go to Ramen Underground, but I was too lazy to stop by the ATM first, even though it was on the way. So I looked up Tokyo Express, saw that you can order online (!) and immediately clicked my way through the website for some tempura udon, Alaska roll (salmon and avocado) and the Heaven roll (spicy tuna, basically). I placed my order through Seamless (if you're a first-time user, put in X949yT in the coupon box for $5 off!) and they said my order would be ready in about 30-35 minutes. I headed to pick it up, and they asked for my ID, gave me my food, and sent me on my way. Unfortunately, I didn't know how long my food had been ready prior to my arrival, and although they were in separate bags, the heat from my udon made my sushi lukewarm, so I had to stick it in the refrigerator for a bit before enjoying. I sort of wish they'd put my sushi outside or something until I got there. The udon was good too, and it came with a small salad. Downside was the price - as with most Japanese places, it's pricey if you order more than your basic bento box. Total fan of this place, especially when I'm really craving some good ol' sushi. Their sushi rolls are decently sized and I feel are a tad fresher than sushi that you get at a grocery store. Service wise, I've never had a problem. Trying out new lunch time places in the FiDi, I returned to Tokyo Express for my second visit ever. I consider this type of establishment - half service. You go to the front and order, get your number placard, take a seat, and your food is brought to you. While you wait, you help yourself t tea and water at your own leisure. There might be a mad scramble to find a seat/table right after you pay, and this can be a bit daunting. I ordered the Chirashi, 'different fish over sushi rice bowl,' ($12.99), my sister ordered the Blossom Chirashi, 'tuna, salmon, avocado over sushi rice bowl,' ($12.99), and my colleague ordered the Vegetable Don ($5.99). All of our orders came with miso soup and small salad. Overall, the prices aren't too bad. They aren't overly priced, and they can be cheap since you aren't paying for the service here. They do offer an array of Japanese food, as well as sushi and rolls. My chirashi bowl was filling. I didn't count how many slices of fish, but there was a good amount that covered my rice. The fish wasn't the highest quality, but it'll do for a fast workday lunch. As other yelpers mentioned, this is an 'express,' so they are quick to clean up your table as you finish your soup bowl, salad bowl, etc. At times, the way they start rearranging your plates to make room can be a bit overbearing. But I guess they are aiming for efficiency and not politeness. For vegetarians out there, they offer quite a selection of veggie options, from rolls to entrees. And they are easily noted on the menu. Because of their huge menu, they also have a bunch of handwritten specials written all over the place. Good luck trying to read it all before ordering. Overall, I would return if I'm craving a decent Japanese lunch - from a bento box to sashimi, I would go back. That's why I used to come here so often, because their prices were the lowest in the area. Now you have to go for the daily specials to take advantage of their previously low prices. I like going on Monday for the chicken udon ($6.59) or Tuesday for the salmon teriyaki rice bowl ($7.37). They also have a good deal on the Chirashi on Friday for $15. Basically, the specials start out cheaper earlier in the week and starts getting more expensive as the week goes on. Tip: If you don't like their iceberg lettuce salad with the mayonnaise dressing that comes with many of the meals, you can substitute edamame for free! The line gets kinda long if you're looking to actually go in and place your order so I highly recommend taking your time to order ahead on meal pal or ritual to skip that line. There are some tables and chairs if you want to sit down for your meal but it's pretty central (right by my office) so I typically just walk it back and eat it back at the office.
