Ordered online for pick up because they were closing within the hour. It's a small family owned restaurant. The Gomae was not good. The spinach tasted really old and not fresh. Unfortunately, I also didnt think the spider roll was good. The coating on the crab was way too much. Miso soup and basic Japanese salad were good. I did like the salmon skin roll. And a side order of soft shell crab (yum). Dynamite roll was interesting. We also ordered the 3 item bento dinner combination. 4 piece sashimi was good!! My review is for take out. I placed my order online and the process was very smooth and easy! The location is tiny and you'll miss it if you're not really paying attention since the outside sign is also not super well lit. The staff were super friendly and welcoming, you can tell that they care about their business. The prices are great and a lot cheaper compared to other sushi spots in the area. Sushi isn't super fancy and the quality is a bit better than okay but if you're in a rush and you want to grab a quick bite then you won't mind it, if you're looking for better quality sushi with better presentation and better taste then those other sushi spots will blow this one out of the water. My ABSOLUTE favorite NO FRILLS Sushi restaurant. Tom and Wendy are WONDERFUL, and their service and attentiveness to their customers outstanding. The fish is always fresh, ample cuts. Being a "Bento" I don't typically eat Bento so I can't say much about their bento boxes; but my Mom loves em. Of course she does, she was married to one. haa ha haah All kidding aside, Fish-n-Gari is a solid traditional Sushi restaurant, prices are reasonble, service is great, and fish is DELICIOUS. I probably wouldn't get the appetizers again and would supplement with hand rolls or nigiri. The star of the show was the screaming roll and the spicy tuna rolls. Great Neighborhood Sushi Spot! Over a year ago (pre pandemic), towards the tail end of a long walk, I found myself starving and right in front of Fish N Gari on Polk. I walked in and had me a quick lunch which I enjoyed, but then I forgot all about the place because it is not near where I live. Then months later, during the pandemic, I was walking by again and I remembered about the good experience I had, and decided to get a to-go meal. I love Nigiri sushi and theirs I enjoyed very much, but Fish N Gari also offers a great selection of rolls. My favorit so far is the Red Dragon Roll, but if you are a daring eater, I suggest you try a few of their less "traditional" rolls; you will be pleasantly surprised. Since moving back to SF last month I've been making my way through the neighborhood to find the spots I want to frequent. This is a spot worth frequenting. The gist: amazingly reasonable prices, quality service (my service here exceeded many other restaurants; tea refill without request, attentiveness to every detail); the food is carefully prepared and still comes out speedily; complimentary hot tea is set out immediately upon seating; unobtrusive but also immersive (there was a basketball game on the flatscreen above the sushi bar and other patrons with more athletic spirit than I have were engaging in hearty conversation about the coaches). The spicy tuna hand roll came out super fast and was plump with fresh and delicious spicy tuna; the humble avocado and cucumber roll was expertly presented. The maguro nigiri was buttery and fresh, and the green salad (for the sake of feeling culinarily virtuous), is dressed in a soy-based dressing and is the size of a huge bowl with avocado and nice cuts of cucumber. I really think in this neighborhood there are a lot of overrated restaurants with hype and this one is not that. They are a traditional and honest business model serving a customer's needs at a wonderful return. I'll be back here soon! read more

The salad was salty to my taste since it was dressed with some kind of shoyu and for a 30$ platter I can easily get more sushi for the same price in Hawaii and believe me, sushi is expensive there. Actually a 2.5/5, but that doesn't make much difference. This place is really close to my friend's house, so we always walk past it, but haven't ever gone in before. Three of us came in late on a weekday and the restaurant was completely empty. I ordered the 2 item dinner bento box with Tonkatsu and Sashimi (which is four pieces of the chef's choice of whatever they have that day). I got four pieces of different fish, maybe on the small-medium size, and I think it was salmon, tuna, and then maybe yellowtail and one other ambiguous fish. The quality was not too bad, but just smaller than sashimis at other sushi places. The bento was honestly very small and there was a huge amount of rice compared to the size of the tonkatsu. There was basically nothing else on the tray so I had like two compartments open, so it looked small for the price of $16.75. Not bad, but there are definitely bento combinations that give a bit larger serving size. The lady also brought each of us one cup of hot tea and that never got refilled, as well as they never came to check on us during the entire duration of the meal. I didn't even take a picture of the food because I guess it didn't seem very aesthetic, so I didn't take any pictures to memorialize it. read more

I am very satisfied with this roll, and the freshness of the fish, and I wish I had ordered two. My friend enjoyed her Walnut Shrimp tempura roll fondly. The same cannot be said for the edamame which seemed a bit dry and shriveled but the flavor fine. The agedashi tofu is good but my friend wanted it more crispy. Spicy tuna roll was fresh, and didn't have any "left over" fish smell Tamago was freshly made, not the frozen tamago you can order from Wee for $8/500g. Inari was expertly wrapped and even tucked in, better than I could do myself as well. Dragon roll was shatteringly crisp even after delivery. The tuna inside was cooked through but that's to be expected sometimes in an item like this. I understand often restaurant advertises their lunch specials to attract customers during their non-busy time and I was actually hooked to try it after passing through the restaurant several time... So i came in one day and ordered fried spicy udon and ordered salmon fried rice to go. Fried Spicy Udon: not spicy at all and it's basically fried udon with a lot of lettuce that came with 2 gyoza and a bowl of miso soup. Trust me the highlight there was the 2 gyoza and you can forget everything else... Salmon Fried Rice: I believe the chef forgot salt or soy sauce as it didnt have any taste at all... it's pretty bland feeling! Well better luck next time i come there... read more

I was originally going to the place next door but their prices and options were not the same, as listed. Upon walking in, it's a decent sized space but still cozy. There's a "sushi bar" seating and a few tables. I'd say about 30ppl or so at one time. I ordered a "chose 2" Bento Box. The food was just "ok" but the service and value were really good. I wish they had onions included in the tempura and I would've like actual "ginger" dressing for my salad (although this is just a preference). If the service wasn't good, they probably would've gotten a 2.5 based on food alone. The only this that was really hot was the tempura. While I was there, 2 sets of regulars walked in and as I asked for my check, one of the owners co fused me as well...lol They seem to be a neighborhood staple. I do wish that their sushi menu was a little more broad, as I would've tried that as well. I loved the ambiance, being able to sit in peace and with my own thoughts. I'm sure the hot tea helped with that as well. If you're hungry, in the area and looking for a peace-of-mind, definitely give them a shot. Fish and Gari is a small little hole in the wall of a restaurant. Nestled amongst several dining options on Polk Street, you might not notice it right away but it is one of my neighborhood favorites for Japanese food. I have to walk a little farther to get here, but it is worth the effort. I mostly come here for the sashimi, but there is something about the riceless sushi that keeps me coming back. Instead of rice or seaweed, they use thinly sliced cucumber to roll the fish in. It has such a great flavor, refreshing and not heavy at all. Perfect for low carb lunches. I brought my mom in for lunch and she was pretty impressed with the cucumber wrapped roll as well. They often have butterfish (escolar) which is one of my favorite fish to eat. Sometimes I will order an extra side of that, because it is so rich. The sashimi is often thickly cut, very fresh and filling. I better wrap this up because I am now craving sushi!! read more

It's probably a stretch just based on food but I'm bumping Fish N Gari up because the folks here are just absolutely lovely and the prices are really reasonable too. Overall a satisfying sushi lunch on the cheap that is hard to beat. The bento boxes are pretty decent too. I got mine with mixed tempura, tonkatsu, and sashimi. It's a pretty large lunch adding in the rice, salad, and miso soup. the 3-item combo at lunch will run you just $10.95. The tempura and tonkatsu were fried nicely and not too greasy. The sashimi was fresh too. My one ding is that while the food is decent, there are little corners cut here and there like the dipping sauces tasting diluted. Everything always comes full circle I guess. I used to order from here a lot before I discovered the deliciousness that is UberEats (though that customer service, ugh) and Caviar. I got the chirashi combo. Each piece of fish (12 in total) was quite sizeable-- about half an inch thick and 2 inches long. If anything, I would prefer a thinner cut so that it would be easier to chew. Very solid sizes though. The salmon was buttery but not quite salmony. The yellowtail was pretty fresh. The tuna was of the darker red variety, but definitely fresh. Butterfish was super fatty. However-- and it's hard to put my finger on exactly what it is, but the fish just didn't appeal to me.
