Hokkaido Milk, Sakura Matcha, and Murasaki Ube (IG@ boba._.addict)
    Jennifer H.

Sakura Matcha 7.5/10 Hokkaido Milk 8.5/10 Murasaki Ube 7.5/10 Sakura Matcha has a nice subtle floral to it. I got less sweet; I feel no sweet would be good for me, since the foam already had a sweet taste. Hokkaido Milk was creamy and sweet a perfect treat to end the night. Murasaki Ube was nice I couldn't really taste the ube. It tasted more like Pandan and coconut. I loved the coconut flakes.

Wanted to try this fairly new dessert place in the Sunset, and had high expectations for their Hokkaido milk. Overall, I'd say it was average - good, but not as good as other places I've tried like Indigo Cow in LA. Black & White Swirl (Hokkaido milk and black sesame): -pros: not too sweet, decent price ($5.50 per serving), has good baseline milk flavor and black sesame flavor -cons: texture/consistency is too icy, milk is not very rich, lacking in fragrance and freshness Overall, I think this is an okay place to try, but I feel they have some areas for improvement for the consistency and recipe of their soft serve.

Got the Tokyo cream banana. Perfect balance of sweetness. They have self service kiosk. Good place for a light dessert.

Even in SF, plans that specialize in soft serves are rare; so I was excited to see this place open. HokkaidoMilk &black sesame swirl (5/5); I thought both flavors balance each other well. The Hokkaido milk was creamy, rich, and soft. The black sesame was earthy and nutty. Cant wait till they have more flavors!

Summary: Diabeetus Details: Okay so here's another one of those "I really wanted to like this" kind of places, sorry. I had Hokkaido milk ice cream a few times while I was in Japan and absolutely adored it: the idea of ice cream that tastes like milk (and not vanilla) was very novel to Americanized me, and it became a flavor I've been seeking here ever since. So, all that to say, I was VERY excited to see Tokyo Cream pop up! But alas. To their credit, their basic milk flavor had a nice creaminess to it, and was fairly milk-y, but still fairly lacking in comparison to what you can get across the pond. All of that would be fine though, if their soft serve wasn't so horrendously sweet: much more so than other Asian soft serve spots in the city, and possibly even more than a good number of the American soft serve spots too. The lines and crowds are also pretty rough, all of which makes this an unlikely repeat visit for me. Accessibility: Between the lane dividers, narrow corridors, and the crowds, the venue isn't really the most accessible. You can certainly squeeze your way around, but it's not a great experience.

I've been wanting to try this new soft serve spot for a while since it's hard to find Hokkaido milk soft serve. They transformed the former Toast N' Egg into a bright modern space with a mural of SF, booths, and stools. Order at one of the kiosks and wait for your name to be called. Our order: Black & White Swirl Soft Serve: $5.50 +Hokkaido milk soft serve was creamy and milky +Sesame soft serve was creamy and nutty w/strong sesame flavor +Not too sweet Kouignigiri (Banana): $4.95 +Crunchy caramelized exterior with a flaky interior +Not too sweet -There was barely any banana filling Matcha Kori Brûlée: $8.95 -Described as "Torched crème brûlée over shaved matcha ice", the product we received was not what was described. We received a matcha latte with a few streaks of crème brûlée and plenty of ice cubes topped with a small mound of shaved matcha ice. Tokyo Kōhī (Hot, 0% sweet): $5.95 +Drinkable temperature: Hot, but doesn't burn your mouth/tongue -Filled only 2/3 of the way, the watery coffee was bland & not creamy. One of the worst coffees I've had in recent memory. Side notes: 1.) Rewards: Sign up w/phone # to earn points 2.) Self-serve napkins, spoons, and straws 3.) Restroom available for customers 4.) Limited street parking *Verdict: Out of the 4 things we tried, I would only get the soft serve again. I'd highly recommend sticking to the soft serve if you come here.

The space is clean, bright, and feels well put together for a soft serve spot. It gets crowded pretty fast, they have a kiosk setup, which i dislike. The setup can slow things down since many of the people who have never been in there take longer deciding what they want on the screen. I waited about 20 minutes for a black sesame swirl, which felt a bit long for just a soft serve during lunch time. The visual menu is nice, but the ice cream itself didn't really stand out for me. I was hoping for something more rich and creamy, but it leaned a little icy and slightly processed. I think this place would improve a lot with a smoother flow during peak times and a creamier texture for their ice cream to match the presentation.

I went here on a Saturday around 9pm and it was crowded inside and there was about a 10 minute wait. At this restaurant, everyone orders at the tablets at the side of the restaurant and then choose a spot to sit at. We ordered the Tokyo Banana Soft Serve and a Kouinigiri. The staff was quick at making our order, so that was nice. Both of the items tasted good, but the kouinigiri didn't really have anything special to it. The kouinigiri tasted like a normal croissant with a slight hint of a banana flavor from the sparse amount of banana filling inside. I'd recommend this place for the soft serve. The soft serve had a slight banana flavor which reminded me of a banana dessert from Japan.

I saw someone outside licking black colored ice cream and wondered if it was black sesame. I'm a big sucker for black sesame flavored food. It brings me back to my childhood when mom used to grind seeds for hours in her old blender in the basement. It was noisy as heck and the wait was torturous but the outcome was this delicious nutty smooth creamy flavor that never leaves your brain. Gee Mah Woo. In we went and ordered the soft serve black sesame ice cream, the strawberry matcha creamy drink and a banana kouignamann-nigiri. The black sesame was delicious but not as good as mom's :). I thought the kouignamann-nigiri triangle had fresh bananas inside, it was crispy flakey and sweet. Great little snack. The match strawberry was a nice combo but wish we got 50% less sugar. Great place for a quick and unique snack!

After a quick trip to the Cal Academy of science, I wanted a sweet treat before heading back to the south bay. I saw this spot was close by. I love matcha and black sesame so I was excited to try the ice cream. My husband really enjoyed his matcha sundae. My toddler and I shared the black sesame cone. We had to eat it fast because it melted quickly. The cone was like a fortune cookie. The bottom was completely soggy by the time I got to the end. It was my first time there so my recommendation is to get a cup and eat the cone while your eating the ice-cream. We also ordered the croissant like pastry. It was banana flavor. It was definitely crispy. I wish it was warmed up. My husband said it was but I guess after a 10 minute walk to the car it got cold. I'll save it for home and put it in the air fryer. I'm sure the banana flavor will be so much better. Overall, I would come back for the ice cream and see what other seasonal items they have to try.

Tokyo Cream has a modern and unique interior. They also have seating available, which is nice if you want to sit and enjoy your desserts. I got the Hokkaido sesame swirl, and it was really good. It was creamy and not overly sweet, which I appreciated. My boyfriend got the yuzu honey swirl, and he said it was sweet and tasted really good. We both also tried the sakura matcha drink at 50% sweetness. It was a great balance because you could still taste the matcha clearly while getting the strawberry flavor as well.

Cute lil soft serve of Hokkaido milk and black sesame swirl!

A delicate treat! Light and creamy and sweet but not too indulgent. My friend and I enjoyed the Hokkaido milk and black sesame swirl ice cream. I imagine it's lower in fat than regular ice cream because it doesn't have that same thick richness. It's more refreshing I'd say. Def worth a try. I'd like to come back for other items, like their bruleed tube of custard! You have the option to order at a little kiosk if you are antisocial but staff are all available to order at the counter if you have questions. It's small in there, not much seating, and we made it in right before the midday rush, so there's a chance you might stand!

    Linda H.

If you're in the mood for soft serve, def a cute spot!! The ube soft serve was my fave! I love ube so not really a surprise there. The black sesame was good, the Hokkaido milk flavor was out of service so I couldn't get the swirl so I think that might've made it better. The cookie cone was very good! The banana crème caramel pastry was soooo delicious! Def would get that again. Didn't get the Choquet but def will next time!! Overall very efficient place to order, the staff is so friendly and helpful. The vibes are so cute inside!

I'm always hunting for spots like this because I have a weakness for those over-the-top, Instagram-worthy desserts that look like diabetes in a dish. Like most places in this genre, A Buttercup is small, modern, and minimalist with limited seating. If you plan to go, aim for off-hours unless you enjoy waiting in line for sugar. The decor is cute and trendy, perfect for photos if that's part of your dessert ritual. As they say, "you eat with your eyes first," and when it comes to presentation, this place definitely gets an A+. The desserts look stunning and set high expectations. Unfortunately, that's where things started to crumble. It's like going to see your favorite artist live. You've watched the videos, memorized the songs, and paid for the experience. But instead of the electric performance you imagined, you get someone lip-syncing and barely connecting with the crowd. That was this place in dessert form. We ordered the Mango Bingsoo on our first visit, and when it arrived, we were surprised by how small the portion was. The guy next to us even looked over and said, "Whatever that is, I'm getting that next time." He shouldn't have. The Bingsoo looked great but was bland, and the "snow" was more chunky ice than soft shave. The Thai Tea Roti was also not what I expected. It came with Thai tea ice cream and sauce alongside a roti that was fried to a crunch. Interesting idea, just not the best execution. The sauce and ice cream needed a stronger Thai tea flavor to balance the crispy roti, and the flavors never quite came together. Overall, A Buttercup nails the aesthetics but misses the flavor. If you're here for the photos, you'll be happy. If you're here for the taste, you'll leave with a full camera roll and an unsatisfied sweet tooth.
