Yet in many Japanese restaurants, I've found that no matter when I revisit and order their omakase, the dishes, from appetizers to sushi and sashimi, all remain the same. Thankfully, this was not the case at Shumi. Here, the chefs truly strive to create edible masterpieces. I had the pleasure of enjoying innovative appetizers along with nigiri that simply melted in my mouth. Shumi's omakase was once priced at $150 per person, but in a thoughtful move to accommodate their customers, they adjusted it to $95 per person without compromising the quality of their fish. I will note that the pieces are smaller, but they still deliver the freshest taste. The staff is exceptionally gracious, dedicated to ensuring a wonderful dining experience. They are quick to replenish your tea or fill your glass as soon as it's half empty. I did, however, find the restaurant a bit chilly, and the music was a little too loud, making it difficult to hear the staff as they described each type of fish. For those who followed Master Chef Kunihiko "Ike" Aikasa from the original Shumi in Somerville, he sold that business before opening this new location in Ridgewood, which has been open since 2017. Here, he has partnered with owner David Seo. The aesthetic of the new restaurant remains clean and bright. In a competitive town like Ridgewood, where locals expect restaurants to bring their A-game, Shumi has obviously stood the test of time. I wish them many more years of excellence. Rating scale: Service: 5/5 Ambiance: 4/5 Cleanliness: 4.5/5 Food: 5/5 Overall: I'd give it 4.5 stars, but I rounded it up to 5 stars.

In fact, if they were open now I might grab some breakfast. They are located outside of the main downtown in the plaza with Greenway. That's a good thing as downtown can be a logistical nightmare to park and grab a quick bite. Menya has a small, comfortable seating area. The menu is simple with a few delicious broth bases and a wider variety of noodle, protein or veggie ingredients. Service is quick and friendly, and you'll wonder how you got that bowl full of goodness in your tummy so quickly!

For lunch, I tried the shoyu ramen with a soft boiled egg and side of spicy oil. The broth was light and flavorful. The chashu was very tender and seared nicely. The shoyu came with straight noodles instead of wavy, but it was still good. The bowl had menma, as well as red and green onions. I enjoyed the bowl so much, we went back for dinner the same day. For dinner, I tried the shio ramen, which was basically the same thing, but with a sea salt tare instead of soy sauce. I also got wavy noodles this time and I definitely prefer the wavy noodles. Once again, it came with red and green onion, which i think is a bit overpowering. I would get just green onion next time. The family/couple sets seem to be a great deal. I would definitely return.

THE GOOD ----------------…read more+ Solid sushi, nothing spectacular, but hits the spot. ++++ Sushi Regular fish was relatively fresh on the sushi pieces, 8 in total. It also came with a choice of a regular roll. ++++ Spicy Maki Combo, which consisted of any 3 spicy rolls, did not taste or look like spicy rolls. They just looked like regular rolls, but they were still decent. There were only 4 spicy rolls to choose from though, of which I chose the Spicy Tuna, Spicy Salmon and Spicy Yellowtail. ++++ Chicken Udon was surprisingly VERY good. Even though it was just a simple chicken udon, the chicken was quite flavorful and tender. Broth was your typical miso broth/soup. THE NOT SO GOOD ---------------------------- - Waiters can be a little bit more enthusiastic, but food arrived pretty quick. MIXED THOUGHTS --------------------------- = Nada. RANDOM OBSERVATIONS -------------------------------------- = Extremely busy on a Friday evening at 5:30 PM so make reservations! Your average, run of the mill Japanese/sushi restaurant…read more We came by on a hot Friday evening at around 6 PM and, unlike some of the more popular restaurants in Ridgewood, this restaurant was pretty much empty when we walked in. However, it did get pretty busy around 7 PM, but there were still available seats. For a restaurant in this area, it was pretty big with quite a few tables inside. The menu was very typical of any local neighborhood Japanese restaurant - Japanese soups and salads, appetizers, entrees like teriyaki dishes, noodles/udons, rice entrees and lots of different sushi and sushi rolls. Nothing on the menu will blow you away or be surprising, but it'll satisfy your Japanese food craving if that's what you're seeking. Our family ordered Edamame and Fried Gyoza to start and both were good. The Gyoza was actually better than I anticipated, arriving at our table hot and crispy. For entrees, we ordered our kids the Salmon Teriyaki, which was solid. There was a lot of teriyaki sauce on the salmon and the salmon was not overly cooked or dry, so that was a plus. I ordered 3 regular sushi rolls - Spicy Crab, Spicy Yellowtail and Spicy Salmon - and all were good and pretty much what I expected. My wife ordered the Sushi Regular, which came with 8 pieces of sushi and a California Roll. Once again, all good. Nothing that was off about any of it. We also ordered a Nabeyaki Udon, but I didn't get to try any of it, however, our kids ate a lot of it, which was a good sign that it was good. Like I said, there was nothing that was bad here and everything was good, but nothing is spectacular either. If you're just seeking Japanese food/sushi and need to get your fix on, the food at Kumo will hit that spot.

Update to my earlier review from 2024…read more We dined in for the first time on a spring Friday evening at around 6 PM and we were pretty much were the only ones dining inside for a majority of our meal. However, they were plenty busy with takeout orders. Service was quick as the waiter took our order down and our food was out within MINUTES! I ordered the Shoyu Ramen, which was a pretty good ramen considering they weren't a restaurant that specialized in ramen. The ramen was very tasty and like any other I've ordered from legit ramen restaurants. My wife ordered a custom poke bowl, which we've ordered many times before for pickup. The bowl was MASSSIVE and seemingly much bigger than what they typically give for takeout orders, although their takeout poke bowls are very generous too. For our kids, we ordered the House Special Fried Rice, which came with eggs and Chinese sausage. It was a solid fried rice and we were quite surprised it came with Chinese sausage because it's an ingredient we rarely see used for fried rice entrees at restaurants. Overall, our dining experience here was good and we loved that it was nice and quiet. It never got super busy, but a few parties did come in after us. The bread and butter of their business is definitely takeout though.
