I absolutely love sushi and will travel far for the freshest bites, the kind that tastes like they just jumped off the boat! I recently discovered Maru in Ridgewood, and ever since, I've been back multiple times for both lunch and dinner. Their hand rolls are amazing, especially the wagyu beef with uni and the ikura with uni, or uni sushi, all are absolute must-tries if you love uni as much as I do. Their lunch set, particularly the Maki special, is a fantastic deal. It comes with a generous salad, maki, sushi, end with choice of udon and by the end of the meal, you get so much food that it's hard to finish! Tucked in the small strip mall is a hidden secret. Maru Sushi has warm and yet trendy vibe with fantastic food. My husband and I got a baby sitter and was able to go for date night. As of July 2025, it's BYOB, so we brought some Japanese beer and sake to enjoy. Sitting at the sushi table, we got to see first hand how all the fresh sushi is prepared by Chef Jin. Chef Jin explained all the seafood and how each bite was prepared. We got some appetizer from the kitchen while we waited for our omakase and added some additional items as well. All the ingredients were fresh and delicious, served with fantastic sauces that enhanced the ingredients flavors. Best sushi in Jersey. We had the lunch special on Sunday. The salmon was tasty. The wasabi was better than most places here in Jersey. The miso soup was very tasty. The udon noodles that say they are spicy are legitimately spicy. This is a first for me in Jersey. It's usually false advertising. Not here, very spicy noodles, you'll want to try these if you like an above average spicy restaurant experience. Next time I return, I'll probably have the salmon lunch again. I also want to try their other noodles. They aren't spicy, but they looked good. I really hope they don't tone down the heat for the local clientele. The staff is very nice and competent, well done! Fish so fresh you'll swear that it was flown in from Tsukiji only hours earlier. Maru Sushi is the kind of place that reminds you why sushi became an art form in the first place. The omakase is where Maru truly shines. Every cut is deliberate, every garnish purposeful. The toro melted like warm butter, and the uni was so briny and sweet it could have been harvested minutes before serving. Wonderful sushi spot - staff was very attentive, checking in often and providing refills of water regularly without us asking. We ordered edamame and shumai to start - both were wonderful and prepared quickly. I ordered shrimp tempura roll, Caribbean roll and spicy tuna roll. All great. The rice felt a little on the stale side (hence my one star off) but the fillings were super fresh and good! The place itself is beautiful and the interior decor is lovely. After an hour of watching everyone else in the restaurant get food, we inquired about why we hadn't even received our appetizers. After some scurrying around and much confusion, they realized that they never put our order in and lost our ticket. So we had to reorder everything and wait. At this point we are starving, would it have killed them to throw us an order of edamame ? And then we wait more, you would think they would have at least rushed our ticket but nope ; 90 minutes of waiting and we finally get our appetizers. In addition to the full omakase experience they also have these smaller partial experiences with chefs choice appetizer, sashimi, and maki roll. We have never been to Maru but read the reviews and it looked promising. We've been to most of the sushi places in this part of Bergen County, but never tried Maru. It was my wife's birthday and I was taking her, my son and his girlfriend for a special dinner. Maru was a home run! Unlike most sushi spots, it had atmosphere and a nice vibe. The restaurant was crowded and buzzing. We started with the bang, bang, shrimp, some edamame and a couple of other things I don't remember for our entrées we shared a naked Maio roll, the angry shrimp roll and a sashimi Omakase selection. Everything was excellent, including the service. We brought some Prosecco and some unfiltered sake that were both great. All in all a great evening and we will definitely be back! read more

We went here for lunch to celebrate my friend's birthday. We all got the Maru hand roll lunch. Since it was my friends birthday they actually give you one meal for free which was awesome ! They come around refilling water and tea the service is good , the portions are very decent the lunch portion included soup salad 2 pieces of chefs choice sushi and a few rolls . The reason for the 4 stars... it's a very popular restaurant that gets completely filled up by 6:30 and sushi chef and our waiter got too busy to provide 5 star service...and it does get pretty loud... As a hardcore sushi lover who's tried almost every single sushi restaurant in the area, I gotta say this place is the best. This is already my second time here in the same week; came by for lunch and had to come back to treat my family out for a nice dinner. So happy to finally have a place in ridgewood that serves actual high quality fish! On top of the quality, the flavor, ambience, and service are excellent. My only complaints would be that for our sushi platter, I asked if the avocado roll could be switched out for something else since we didn't want plain rice and avocado. The waitress said she'd ask the chef but there were only 3 classic rolls vs the 4 we should've gotten. Not sure if they perhaps just added extra avocado into one of the other rolls? Didn't get to ask bc I didn't realize until looking at the picture just now. They also kept blasting the music crazy loud at random times (to the point where it actually hurt our ears and we couldn't converse at our table), which we had to request to lower the volume. The friendly service and amazing food at Maru Sushi have really stuck with me. The restaurant might have been in a small strip mall, but it had a modern, trendy vibe, which was abuzz with patrons on a late Friday evening. The entire staff was gracious and really seemed dedicated to perfecting our experience. We shared so many items, including some of the sushi special meals that came with both soup and salad. The items we tried included: 1.) Steamed Vegetable Gyoza - my least favorite dish - green noodles that were a bit overcooked and filled with bland vegetable stuffing 2.) Avocado Bomb - fresh avocado enveloping spicy salmon tartare (offer choice to do tuna), topped with micro greens, crunch and tobiko - served with house-made sweet potato chips. Ripe, colorful, and delicious 3.) Maru Ceviche - refreshing, acidic blend of shrimp, squid, octopus, white fish, onion, tomato, cucumber, cilantro, apple, and Korean pear in a yuzu dressing. The fruit added a crunchy, textural contrast to the tender fish 4.) Miso Soup - generous amounts of miso paste for a rich broth 5.) Side Salad with Ginger Dressing - standard mix of iceberg lettuce, carrots, and tomatoes 6.) Bulgogi Don - soy marinated, tender beef with fresh vegetables over white rice - really delicious 7.) Rolls: a. Rainbow Roll with avocado, cucumber, and kani inside + topped w/ tuna, salmon, yellowtail, white fish, and avocado - the simplest, but best roll we had b. King Kong Roll with seared tuna, seared salmon, kani tempura, avocado, oshinko and scallion with tare sauce & spicy sauce - LOVED the smokiness of the seared fish, which made the roll very unusual! c. Some special roll with yellowtail, asparagus, etc. which we did not love d. A special roll with eel that was tasty I would highly recommend giving Maru a try. A sparkling hidden gem where you'd least expect it. As stormy clouds formed over the town of Ridgewood, and the wind grew still, me and my boyfriend knew rain would ensue. We set out for Maru sushi. We walked through the doors and immediately felt at home yet startled by the lack of diners sitting (or rather not sitting!) in the establishment. As the hostess guided us to our seats we looked to and fro to note the differences of this sushi spot from others in the area. We passed three chefs at their stations, who worked behind a tastefully decorated sushi bar. The ambiance of Maru Sushi cannot and must not go unappreciated. We ordered a multitude of sushi rolls, but before we began to feast on the Japanese delicacy, we started with another dish which hailed from Japan. The soy garlic edamame was absolutely delicious. The heartiness of the edamame bean mixed with the punch of the soy garlic sauce made for an addicting appetizer. Then came the main attraction; the sushi. This was the best sushi I have ever had in my life. I have eaten a multitude of sushi rolls throughout the course of my love affair with this dish. When the delectable trio roll, or naked Maru roll, or tuna love roll touched just the tip of my tongue, I was sprung into a world of flavor and satisfaction. While the aforementioned rolls were the standout ones, the supporting cast of the angry shrimp, Spider, and Naruto rolls were all excellent. All rolls offered a different taste experience, whether that was to refresh your palate, or delight it with flavor. As flawless as the sushi was, the service was just as impeccable. They were quick to clear our table, yet showed they cared about our dining experience. The chefs must have heard us raving about their sushi, because they gave us two speciality pieces on the house. We even walked out without our leftover sushi (yes we could not waste a single piece) and one of the waitstaff ran out after us in the rain to give us our goodies.
