Always great service and food at Maru! We love sitting at the bar area by the chefs and seeing what they are making. Their Omakase is great and very filling. All of the staff there are so friendly and accommodating.

I absolutely love sushi and will travel far for the freshest bites, the kind that tastes like they just jumped off the boat! I recently discovered Maru in Ridgewood, and ever since, I've been back multiple times for both lunch and dinner. Their hand rolls are amazing, especially the wagyu beef with uni and the ikura with uni, or uni sushi, all are absolute must-tries if you love uni as much as I do. Their lunch set, particularly the Maki special, is a fantastic deal. It comes with a generous salad, maki, sushi, end with choice of udon and by the end of the meal, you get so much food that it's hard to finish! Great quality, great portions, services are fantastic as well and definitely worth a visit!

Tucked in the small strip mall is a hidden secret. Maru Sushi has warm and yet trendy vibe with fantastic food. My husband and I got a baby sitter and was able to go for date night. As of July 2025, it's BYOB, so we brought some Japanese beer and sake to enjoy. Sitting at the sushi table, we got to see first hand how all the fresh sushi is prepared by Chef Jin. Chef Jin explained all the seafood and how each bite was prepared. We got some appetizer from the kitchen while we waited for our omakase and added some additional items as well. All the ingredients were fresh and delicious, served with fantastic sauces that enhanced the ingredients flavors. The service was top notch and kept checking on us for water, or how the night was going. I highly recommend visiting!

Korean seafood sushi establishment with good ambience. Friday night with a fair amount of crowd. The sushi, sashimi combo and rib are better than average but on the pricey side. Sevice is a tentative.

Wonderful sushi spot - staff was very attentive, checking in often and providing refills of water regularly without us asking. We ordered edamame and shumai to start - both were wonderful and prepared quickly. I ordered shrimp tempura roll, Caribbean roll and spicy tuna roll. All great. The rice felt a little on the stale side (hence my one star off) but the fillings were super fresh and good! The place itself is beautiful and the interior decor is lovely. Downside, the sushi roll menu wasn't as large as most places. Will definitely be back again to try more.

Fantastic place! I came here for lunch on my birthday. You get a buy one, get one free on your birthday, which I didn't know about. I got the Maru hand roll lunch, which came with a lot of food. I enjoyed everything I ate. The service was very attentive and the service lave is very quaint.

This place was great! They have a lot of different options between the apps, rolls, and omakase. We sat at the bar and it was really awesome to see the chefs creating the different rolls. Service was great and ambiance was relaxing. Everyone that worked there was super friendly and inviting. We can't wait to visit again!

We went here for lunch to celebrate my friend's birthday. We all got the Maru hand roll lunch. Since it was my friends birthday they actually give you one meal for free which was awesome ! They come around refilling water and tea the service is good , the portions are very decent the lunch portion included soup salad 2 pieces of chefs choice sushi and a few rolls . We left stuffed and everything was fresh , the place is cute it has a sushi bar and lots of tables ( which is where we sat ) . I'll definitely be back there !

5 stars for the food 4 stars for service and atmosphere I had the grand omakase ($130) and the food was excellent and sushi chef was super! The reason for the 4 stars... it's a very popular restaurant that gets completely filled up by 6:30 and sushi chef and our waiter got too busy to provide 5 star service...and it does get pretty loud... But nonetheless, all the food we had (we got 20 pieces instead of 16 - thank you, chef!) were very flavorful and impressive. For $130 per person though, I am just used to getting a better service....

Food was incredible, they have very creative menu options and have very impressive menu. Everything we had was so fresh and delicious. I personally got the "trust me" set which was perfect amount of food and a great price. The omakase al la carte was very fun to try. Service was great and fast. Our waiter was very helpful as well.

As a hardcore sushi lover who's tried almost every single sushi restaurant in the area, I gotta say this place is the best. This is already my second time here in the same week; came by for lunch and had to come back to treat my family out for a nice dinner. So happy to finally have a place in ridgewood that serves actual high quality fish! On top of the quality, the flavor, ambience, and service are excellent. My only complaints would be that for our sushi platter, I asked if the avocado roll could be switched out for something else since we didn't want plain rice and avocado. The waitress said she'd ask the chef but there were only 3 classic rolls vs the 4 we should've gotten. Not sure if they perhaps just added extra avocado into one of the other rolls? Didn't get to ask bc I didn't realize until looking at the picture just now. They also kept blasting the music crazy loud at random times (to the point where it actually hurt our ears and we couldn't converse at our table), which we had to request to lower the volume. But other than that, 10/10!

Well I loved the food but it takes them so much time. My 3 dishes came before my youngest son's cucumber rolls.

very cute place. very friendly staff. good came out fresh and hot. I had the nabi roll.. it was alright, not really for me, and definitely over priced for the amount of sushi you're getting.. it doesn't even come with finer and wasabi you have to ask? strange... mushroom miso soup and edamame were good.

Does this place do omakase ? If so is the omakase served one piece at a time?

Yes. Best in Ridgewood as far as I am concerned. They serve a few at a time. Depending on the fish and selection that day. It can be one piece or a couple or a few each course.

    Is this establishment byob?

    Yes it is

Blu Sushi is the perfect mix of deliciousness, affordability, and fantastic service. I've gone there for my lunch around three times these past two weeks and each time I've had a wonderful experience. Their lunch special is super affordable. You can get 2 rolls for the less than I spend for one at many of the other restaurants in Ridgewood. However, despite that, it honestly tastes the best out of many of the places I've gone to. Also, if you are up for spending more, they have a fantastic selection of appetizers and special rolls that you can try again (I recommend the dynamite shrimp). When I go, I normally get the 2 roll option from the lunch menu. Typically, I have the spicy salmon and the spicy tuna rolls when I order that. Regarding those rolls, they are first and foremost delicious. You can tell that fresh their fish is and how much time and dedication they put into their sushi with each bite. Furthermore, they are spicy--but not too spicy. When you have them you are able to enjoy every aspect of the roll without being completely overwhelmed by the spice. Additionally, they add something crunchy to the rolls which take them from just a tasty lunch to a full experience. Most importantly though, the service and ambiance is fantastic. Every time I've been there I've only been treated with kindness and consideration. They are very willing to talk with you about their dishes, share some interesting facts about it (like how they came up with the dynamite shrimp), and more. But the best part about it is that they remember you. That honestly meant a lot to me. I know that this whole review was a lot of me ranting, but I honestly mean it. If you are looking for a nice, quaint, delicious, affordable, and hospitable meal--Blu Sushi is the place for you.

Fish was very fresh though and presentation was excellent. + Spicy Salmon, Spicy Yellowtail, Spicy Cooked White Fish - Shocked at how good the rolls actually were. There was only 1-2 layers of rice, at most, around the sushi and there was a lot of fish filling for the rolls. Fish was very fresh and delicious. Yet in many Japanese restaurants, I've found that no matter when I revisit and order their omakase, the dishes, from appetizers to sushi and sashimi, all remain the same. Thankfully, this was not the case at Shumi. Here, the chefs truly strive to create edible masterpieces. I had the pleasure of enjoying innovative appetizers along with nigiri that simply melted in my mouth. Shumi's omakase was once priced at $150 per person, but in a thoughtful move to accommodate their customers, they adjusted it to $95 per person without compromising the quality of their fish. I will note that the pieces are smaller, but they still deliver the freshest taste. The staff is exceptionally gracious, dedicated to ensuring a wonderful dining experience. They are quick to replenish your tea or fill your glass as soon as it's half empty. I did, however, find the restaurant a bit chilly, and the music was a little too loud, making it difficult to hear the staff as they described each type of fish. For those who followed Master Chef Kunihiko "Ike" Aikasa from the original Shumi in Somerville, he sold that business before opening this new location in Ridgewood, which has been open since 2017. Here, he has partnered with owner David Seo. The aesthetic of the new restaurant remains clean and bright. In a competitive town like Ridgewood, where locals expect restaurants to bring their A-game, Shumi has obviously stood the test of time. I wish them many more years of excellence. Rating scale: Service: 5/5 Ambiance: 4/5 Cleanliness: 4.5/5 Food: 5/5 Overall: I'd give it 4.5 stars, but I rounded it up to 5 stars.

However, it did get pretty busy around 7 PM, but there were still available seats. For a restaurant in this area, it was pretty big with quite a few tables inside. The menu was very typical of any local neighborhood Japanese restaurant - Japanese soups and salads, appetizers, entrees like teriyaki dishes, noodles/udons, rice entrees and lots of different sushi and sushi rolls. Nothing on the menu will blow you away or be surprising, but it'll satisfy your Japanese food craving if that's what you're seeking. Our family ordered Edamame and Fried Gyoza to start and both were good. The Gyoza was actually better than I anticipated, arriving at our table hot and crispy. For entrees, we ordered our kids the Salmon Teriyaki, which was solid. There was a lot of teriyaki sauce on the salmon and the salmon was not overly cooked or dry, so that was a plus. I ordered 3 regular sushi rolls - Spicy Crab, Spicy Yellowtail and Spicy Salmon - and all were good and pretty much what I expected. My wife ordered the Sushi Regular, which came with 8 pieces of sushi and a California Roll. Once again, all good. Nothing that was off about any of it. We also ordered a Nabeyaki Udon, but I didn't get to try any of it, however, our kids ate a lot of it, which was a good sign that it was good. Like I said, there was nothing that was bad here and everything was good, but nothing is spectacular either. However, they were plenty busy with takeout orders. Service was quick as the waiter took our order down and our food was out within MINUTES! I ordered the Shoyu Ramen, which was a pretty good ramen considering they weren't a restaurant that specialized in ramen. The ramen was very tasty and like any other I've ordered from legit ramen restaurants. My wife ordered a custom poke bowl, which we've ordered many times before for pickup. The bowl was MASSSIVE and seemingly much bigger than what they typically give for takeout orders, although their takeout poke bowls are very generous too. For our kids, we ordered the House Special Fried Rice, which came with eggs and Chinese sausage. It was a solid fried rice and we were quite surprised it came with Chinese sausage because it's an ingredient we rarely see used for fried rice entrees at restaurants. Overall, our dining experience here was good and we loved that it was nice and quiet. It never got super busy, but a few parties did come in after us. The bread and butter of their business is definitely takeout though.

We were taken to one of the tables closer to the kitchen in the back. I loved all of the polaroid pics on the walls and chill/relaxed vibe there. It was a cold, rainy night. So once we were seated, we ordered some hot tea and quickly filled out our order sheets. The service was great that night - staff were friendly and attentive. We ordered veggie tempura to share. One order is 3 pieces, so we wrote down 3 on our sheet (see pic - this was what we wanted to split between two). My husband filled up on all the vegetarian friendly rolls (sweet potato, avocado/cucumber, avocado/peanut, and avocado/mango; the last was his favorite). I went with a Crazy Tuna Roll, X-Roll, and a Golden Ridgewood. The latter two are deep fried. Both were tasty but just a lot, so next time I would just order one or the other and regular rolls or sushi pieces. We filled up quickly, so we passed on ice cream at the end. I overheard another table say that the ice cream was really good... Overall, weekday dinner at Sushi X was good experience. We hope to be back again and make sure to round off our meal with some of that delicious ice cream! :)

Same for the sushi it was fine but not overwhelming in any way. Comparing it to other all you can eat I felt it could've been a little cleaner and colder. Plus some of the cuts just fell off. I would only come back here if I was looking to go out in Ridgewood and spend some time in the area.
