Korean seafood sushi establishment with good ambience. Friday night with a fair amount of crowd. The sushi, sashimi combo and rib are better than average but on the pricey side. Sevice is a tentative.

Wonderful sushi spot - staff was very attentive, checking in often and providing refills of water regularly without us asking. We ordered edamame and shumai to start - both were wonderful and prepared quickly. I ordered shrimp tempura roll, Caribbean roll and spicy tuna roll. All great. The rice felt a little on the stale side (hence my one star off) but the fillings were super fresh and good! The place itself is beautiful and the interior decor is lovely. Downside, the sushi roll menu wasn't as large as most places. Will definitely be back again to try more.

Fantastic place! I came here for lunch on my birthday. You get a buy one, get one free on your birthday, which I didn't know about. I got the Maru hand roll lunch, which came with a lot of food. I enjoyed everything I ate. The service was very attentive and the service lave is very quaint.

This place was great! They have a lot of different options between the apps, rolls, and omakase. We sat at the bar and it was really awesome to see the chefs creating the different rolls. Service was great and ambiance was relaxing. Everyone that worked there was super friendly and inviting. We can't wait to visit again!

We went here for lunch to celebrate my friend's birthday. We all got the Maru hand roll lunch. Since it was my friends birthday they actually give you one meal for free which was awesome ! They come around refilling water and tea the service is good , the portions are very decent the lunch portion included soup salad 2 pieces of chefs choice sushi and a few rolls . We left stuffed and everything was fresh , the place is cute it has a sushi bar and lots of tables ( which is where we sat ) . I'll definitely be back there !

5 stars for the food 4 stars for service and atmosphere I had the grand omakase ($130) and the food was excellent and sushi chef was super! The reason for the 4 stars... it's a very popular restaurant that gets completely filled up by 6:30 and sushi chef and our waiter got too busy to provide 5 star service...and it does get pretty loud... But nonetheless, all the food we had (we got 20 pieces instead of 16 - thank you, chef!) were very flavorful and impressive. For $130 per person though, I am just used to getting a better service....

Food was incredible, they have very creative menu options and have very impressive menu. Everything we had was so fresh and delicious. I personally got the "trust me" set which was perfect amount of food and a great price. The omakase al la carte was very fun to try. Service was great and fast. Our waiter was very helpful as well.

As a hardcore sushi lover who's tried almost every single sushi restaurant in the area, I gotta say this place is the best. This is already my second time here in the same week; came by for lunch and had to come back to treat my family out for a nice dinner. So happy to finally have a place in ridgewood that serves actual high quality fish! On top of the quality, the flavor, ambience, and service are excellent. My only complaints would be that for our sushi platter, I asked if the avocado roll could be switched out for something else since we didn't want plain rice and avocado. The waitress said she'd ask the chef but there were only 3 classic rolls vs the 4 we should've gotten. Not sure if they perhaps just added extra avocado into one of the other rolls? Didn't get to ask bc I didn't realize until looking at the picture just now. They also kept blasting the music crazy loud at random times (to the point where it actually hurt our ears and we couldn't converse at our table), which we had to request to lower the volume. But other than that, 10/10!

Well I loved the food but it takes them so much time. My 3 dishes came before my youngest son's cucumber rolls.

very cute place. very friendly staff. good came out fresh and hot. I had the nabi roll.. it was alright, not really for me, and definitely over priced for the amount of sushi you're getting.. it doesn't even come with finer and wasabi you have to ask? strange... mushroom miso soup and edamame were good.

Does this place do omakase ? If so is the omakase served one piece at a time?

Yes. Best in Ridgewood as far as I am concerned. They serve a few at a time. Depending on the fish and selection that day. It can be one piece or a couple or a few each course.

    Is this establishment byob?

    Yes it is

THE GOOD ----------------…read more+ Solid sushi, nothing spectacular, but hits the spot. ++++ Sushi Regular fish was relatively fresh on the sushi pieces, 8 in total. It also came with a choice of a regular roll. ++++ Spicy Maki Combo, which consisted of any 3 spicy rolls, did not taste or look like spicy rolls. They just looked like regular rolls, but they were still decent. There were only 4 spicy rolls to choose from though, of which I chose the Spicy Tuna, Spicy Salmon and Spicy Yellowtail. ++++ Chicken Udon was surprisingly VERY good. Even though it was just a simple chicken udon, the chicken was quite flavorful and tender. Broth was your typical miso broth/soup. THE NOT SO GOOD ---------------------------- - Waiters can be a little bit more enthusiastic, but food arrived pretty quick. MIXED THOUGHTS --------------------------- = Nada. RANDOM OBSERVATIONS -------------------------------------- = Extremely busy on a Friday evening at 5:30 PM so make reservations! Yet in many Japanese restaurants, I've found that no matter when I revisit and order their omakase, the dishes, from appetizers to sushi and sashimi, all remain the same. Thankfully, this was not the case at Shumi. Here, the chefs truly strive to create edible masterpieces. I had the pleasure of enjoying innovative appetizers along with nigiri that simply melted in my mouth. Shumi's omakase was once priced at $150 per person, but in a thoughtful move to accommodate their customers, they adjusted it to $95 per person without compromising the quality of their fish. I will note that the pieces are smaller, but they still deliver the freshest taste. The staff is exceptionally gracious, dedicated to ensuring a wonderful dining experience. They are quick to replenish your tea or fill your glass as soon as it's half empty. I did, however, find the restaurant a bit chilly, and the music was a little too loud, making it difficult to hear the staff as they described each type of fish. For those who followed Master Chef Kunihiko "Ike" Aikasa from the original Shumi in Somerville, he sold that business before opening this new location in Ridgewood, which has been open since 2017. Here, he has partnered with owner David Seo. The aesthetic of the new restaurant remains clean and bright. In a competitive town like Ridgewood, where locals expect restaurants to bring their A-game, Shumi has obviously stood the test of time. I wish them many more years of excellence. Rating scale: Service: 5/5 Ambiance: 4/5 Cleanliness: 4.5/5 Food: 5/5 Overall: I'd give it 4.5 stars, but I rounded it up to 5 stars.

Speaking of the food, let's get into it. Mango Avocado Roll: Refreshing and Delicious. This was a great appetizer to my poke bowl. Oasis Poke Bowl: This was deliciously refreshing as well, however it doesn't come with any sauce. I asked for a side of teriyaki which made everything better; elevated the entire bowl. Surf N Turf: I will order this moving forward as my go-to roll. The beef was cooked to perfection and paired perfectly with the salmon. This roll itself filled me up, I thought I was going to order something else but I was done after that. Salmon and Shrimp Teriyaki: My partner gets this each time and I am always so excited to throw my fork into his plate. The teriyaki sauce here is so tasty, I want to put it on everything! The salmon and shrimp are also cooked super well, no chewiness here. Great amount of crisp on the salmon, the way it slides onto the fork is beautiful to watch. Vegetable Gyoza: The star of the show!! Best appetizer they have truly. I was so sad when there was no more. But thankful to have been able to experience such a great starter. Sweet Potato Roll: (Not pictured) The roll was ok, I liked it but felt like it was missing something. Maybe I would have liked it if it was Korean sweet potatoes. I won't order again because the menu is so extensive I can't limit myself to something I thought was ok. (4/5) Overall, Shokudo is a fantastic place to eat. It's truly an experience. The music is amazing and not overbearing, the ambiance is beautiful and there's multiple conversation pieces. What I love about looking at the items in the restaurant is how they go from traditional to contemporary. The servers were the sweetest, they all were extremely hospitable. All I can say is, I'll be back and if you go... you may see me there.

Not wanting to argue, I just said "OK," but I definitely wasn't happy. I also ordered the chicken teriyaki, which was rubbery and didn't taste like any teriyaki I'm used to. Your average, run of the mill Japanese/sushi restaurant…read more We came by on a hot Friday evening at around 6 PM and, unlike some of the more popular restaurants in Ridgewood, this restaurant was pretty much empty when we walked in. However, it did get pretty busy around 7 PM, but there were still available seats. For a restaurant in this area, it was pretty big with quite a few tables inside. The menu was very typical of any local neighborhood Japanese restaurant - Japanese soups and salads, appetizers, entrees like teriyaki dishes, noodles/udons, rice entrees and lots of different sushi and sushi rolls. Nothing on the menu will blow you away or be surprising, but it'll satisfy your Japanese food craving if that's what you're seeking. Our family ordered Edamame and Fried Gyoza to start and both were good. The Gyoza was actually better than I anticipated, arriving at our table hot and crispy. For entrees, we ordered our kids the Salmon Teriyaki, which was solid. There was a lot of teriyaki sauce on the salmon and the salmon was not overly cooked or dry, so that was a plus. I ordered 3 regular sushi rolls - Spicy Crab, Spicy Yellowtail and Spicy Salmon - and all were good and pretty much what I expected. My wife ordered the Sushi Regular, which came with 8 pieces of sushi and a California Roll. Once again, all good. Nothing that was off about any of it. We also ordered a Nabeyaki Udon, but I didn't get to try any of it, however, our kids ate a lot of it, which was a good sign that it was good. Like I said, there was nothing that was bad here and everything was good, but nothing is spectacular either. If you're just seeking Japanese food/sushi and need to get your fix on, the food at Kumo will hit that spot.
