special roll

I came here earlier this week for dinner and it was nice. Had come in when there was just one other table and the waitress was kind. The place was nicely lit, a nice dim lighting perfect for a good sushi dinner with friends. I got a special roll with tuna and spicy salmon and it tasted very good and filling.

Limited options for vegetarians; there were items for veggies but not the best veggie sushi I've had. The sweet potato rolls were massive and very filling. The restaurant itself is nice, decent ambiance and friendly service. It's mainly regular Ridgewood street parking. Perhaps their other sushi items are more promising but nothing much for the herbivores.

This past evening, I went to Kumo sushi in Ridgewood, NJ. It was as delicious and as good as I had hoped. The server, Emma, was a pleasure! Tried 3 rolls which were all so good . Connection Roll, Mayflower Roll and the Sexy Girl Roll. Can't wait to go back again for more!

Yet in many Japanese restaurants, I've found that no matter when I revisit and order their omakase, the dishes, from appetizers to sushi and sashimi, all remain the same. Thankfully, this was not the case at Shumi. Here, the chefs truly strive to create edible masterpieces. I had the pleasure of enjoying innovative appetizers along with nigiri that simply melted in my mouth. Shumi's omakase was once priced at $150 per person, but in a thoughtful move to accommodate their customers, they adjusted it to $95 per person without compromising the quality of their fish. I will note that the pieces are smaller, but they still deliver the freshest taste. The staff is exceptionally gracious, dedicated to ensuring a wonderful dining experience. They are quick to replenish your tea or fill your glass as soon as it's half empty. I did, however, find the restaurant a bit chilly, and the music was a little too loud, making it difficult to hear the staff as they described each type of fish. For those who followed Master Chef Kunihiko "Ike" Aikasa from the original Shumi in Somerville, he sold that business before opening this new location in Ridgewood, which has been open since 2017. Here, he has partnered with owner David Seo. The aesthetic of the new restaurant remains clean and bright. In a competitive town like Ridgewood, where locals expect restaurants to bring their A-game, Shumi has obviously stood the test of time. I wish them many more years of excellence. Rating scale: Service: 5/5 Ambiance: 4/5 Cleanliness: 4.5/5 Food: 5/5 Overall: I'd give it 4.5 stars, but I rounded it up to 5 stars.

In fact, if they were open now I might grab some breakfast. They are located outside of the main downtown in the plaza with Greenway. The menu is simple with a few delicious broth bases and a wider variety of noodle, protein or veggie ingredients. For lunch, I tried the shoyu ramen with a soft boiled egg and side of spicy oil. The broth was light and flavorful. The chashu was very tender and seared nicely. The shoyu came with straight noodles instead of wavy, but it was still good. The bowl had menma, as well as red and green onions. I enjoyed the bowl so much, we went back for dinner the same day. For dinner, I tried the shio ramen, which was basically the same thing, but with a sea salt tare instead of soy sauce. I also got wavy noodles this time and I definitely prefer the wavy noodles. Once again, it came with red and green onion, which i think is a bit overpowering. I would get just green onion next time. The family/couple sets seem to be a great deal. I would definitely return.

Update to my earlier review from 2024…read more We dined in for the first time on a spring Friday evening at around 6 PM and we were pretty much were the only ones dining inside for a majority of our meal. However, they were plenty busy with takeout orders. Service was quick as the waiter took our order down and our food was out within MINUTES! I ordered the Shoyu Ramen, which was a pretty good ramen considering they weren't a restaurant that specialized in ramen. The ramen was very tasty and like any other I've ordered from legit ramen restaurants. My wife ordered a custom poke bowl, which we've ordered many times before for pickup. The bowl was MASSSIVE and seemingly much bigger than what they typically give for takeout orders, although their takeout poke bowls are very generous too. For our kids, we ordered the House Special Fried Rice, which came with eggs and Chinese sausage. It was a solid fried rice and we were quite surprised it came with Chinese sausage because it's an ingredient we rarely see used for fried rice entrees at restaurants. Overall, our dining experience here was good and we loved that it was nice and quiet. It never got super busy, but a few parties did come in after us. The bread and butter of their business is definitely takeout though.

We were taken to one of the tables closer to the kitchen in the back. I loved all of the polaroid pics on the walls and chill/relaxed vibe there. It was a cold, rainy night. So once we were seated, we ordered some hot tea and quickly filled out our order sheets. The service was great that night - staff were friendly and attentive. We ordered veggie tempura to share. One order is 3 pieces, so we wrote down 3 on our sheet (see pic - this was what we wanted to split between two). My husband filled up on all the vegetarian friendly rolls (sweet potato, avocado/cucumber, avocado/peanut, and avocado/mango; the last was his favorite). I went with a Crazy Tuna Roll, X-Roll, and a Golden Ridgewood. The latter two are deep fried. Both were tasty but just a lot, so next time I would just order one or the other and regular rolls or sushi pieces. We filled up quickly, so we passed on ice cream at the end. I overheard another table say that the ice cream was really good... Overall, weekday dinner at Sushi X was good experience. We hope to be back again and make sure to round off our meal with some of that delicious ice cream! :)

Great location in the heart of Ridgewood....AND, more importantly, the sushi isn't bad either…read more There aren't many AYCE sushi restaurants in northern NJ, but whenever I find one, the excitement antennas are set off in me. One thing I love about this AYCE sushi restaurant is that, like many of the good ones, they offer AYCE sashimi! However, not ALL fishes or typical sashimi were available here (e.g. regular tuna, eel were not part of the sashimi section), but beggars can't be choosers right????? We strolled in for an early Friday evening dinner at around 5:30 PM. First off, if you're familiar with the area, then you'll know that parking is TOUGH here, especially as the evening wears on, so come early! When we arrived, the restaurant was nearly empty with just 2 parties dining, but by around 6:30-7:00 PM, it got absolutely packed. By the time we left at 7:00, the 2 waitresses working the evening were flying back and forth between tables. I won't go through everything on the menu because, like I said, it's very typical of good AYCE sushi restaurants these days. They have various sashimi, sushi, sushi rolls and special rolls on their menu along with salads, soups, appetizers and fried foods. The sashimi, sushi and appetizers were all decent and I thought it was pretty solid. My better half claimed that there was a bit of discoloration on some of the sashimi, so it skewed her opinions immediately of the sashimi quality, but I didn't think there was much to it as most of it tasted relatively fresh. I DO AGREE with her that some of it could have been better though, like the clam sashimi didn't look great. As for service, it was very quick throughout the evening. Our appetizers and sushi came out very quick, although it wasn't super busy at the time when we dined, but the waitresses were always coming back to see if we were ready with our next order. When it did get busy, things seemed a bit more hectic inside. Also, one thing to note for AYCE diners is that if you're not ordering from the AYCE menu, which as of June 2025 is $31.99/person, they do have an a la carte menu too, but if 1 person is doing AYCE at the table, EVERYYYYONE else has to do it, unless the other parties at your table are under 10 years old. Because our kids were not ordering from the AYCE menu, the waitresses seemingly kept coming back to check on our table to make sure our kids were not eating any of the food that my wife and I were ordering from the AYCE menu. In my opinion, it was a a litttttttle petty, but I guess rules are rules and they are definitely strict here about it. Overall, solid sashimi and sushi. We've been to quite a few AYCE sushi restaurants in NY and NJ and Sushi X doesn't have the best AYCE sashimi and sushi quality we've ever had, but it passes the test still and I would still come back again in the future.
