Your average, run of the mill Japanese/sushi restaurant. We came by on a hot Friday evening at around 6 PM and, unlike some of the more popular restaurants in Ridgewood, this restaurant was pretty much empty when we walked in. However, it did get pretty busy around 7 PM, but there were still available seats. For a restaurant in this area, it was pretty big with quite a few tables inside. The menu was very typical of any local neighborhood Japanese restaurant - Japanese soups and salads, appetizers, entrees like teriyaki dishes, noodles/udons, rice entrees and lots of different sushi and sushi rolls. Nothing on the menu will blow you away or be surprising, but it'll satisfy your Japanese food craving if that's what you're seeking. Our family ordered Edamame and Fried Gyoza to start and both were good. The Gyoza was actually better than I anticipated, arriving at our table hot and crispy. For entrees, we ordered our kids the Salmon Teriyaki, which was solid. There was a lot of teriyaki sauce on the salmon and the salmon was not overly cooked or dry, so that was a plus. I ordered 3 regular sushi rolls - Spicy Crab, Spicy Yellowtail and Spicy Salmon - and all were good and pretty much what I expected. My wife ordered the Sushi Regular, which came with 8 pieces of sushi and a California Roll. Once again, all good. Nothing that was off about any of it. We also ordered a Nabeyaki Udon, but I didn't get to try any of it, however, our kids ate a lot of it, which was a good sign that it was good. Like I said, there was nothing that was bad here and everything was good, but nothing is spectacular either. If you're just seeking Japanese food/sushi and need to get your fix on, the food at Kumo will hit that spot. read more

My family usually orders out but decided to dine in today. We had dumplings, ramen soup, bento box, chicken teriyaki and rolls. All were outstanding, fresh, and reasonably priced. My clients wanted this spot for lunch and ordered the hot and spicy lo mein. KIM, they had lunch specials as well. When I arrived I parked on the street nearby. I walked in, and the spot was nice. The lady finished her call and took my payment. The food was almost done, and she then brought it out, and I left. When I dug in, the food was ok. It wasn't as spicy, and it needed a little more salt. All in all, I had an ok experience. read more

Sushi is great, especially the lunch special rolls are a great deal. Sushi is always fresh and consistently good. Cooked food on the menu is very hit or miss. No rolls use crab mayo salad, which is a little annoying. Very solid for sushi though. read more

I came here earlier this week for dinner and it was nice. Had come in when there was just one other table and the waitress was kind. The place was nicely lit, a nice dim lighting perfect for a good sushi dinner with friends. I got a special roll with tuna and spicy salmon and it tasted very good and filling. read more

Limited options for vegetarians; there were items for veggies but not the best veggie sushi I've had. The sweet potato rolls were massive and very filling. The restaurant itself is nice, decent ambiance and friendly service. It's mainly regular Ridgewood street parking. Perhaps their other sushi items are more promising but nothing much for the herbivores. read more

I had a decent experience with the food, but our overall experience was incredibly negative at this restaurant. My group gave our cards to our server, and she returned with only three of our cards. The card was charged to the account, but not returned to us. When we asked about the missing card, our server dismissed us and wouldn't help search for it. My group had to search throughout the entire restaurant, including the hostess area. We didn't receive help or an apology for this incident. In addition, while we were searching, the server would physically push us aside to get to the computer to print out other receipts. Not one person in the restaurant made any effort to help find the card, and based on the attitude of the employees, it seems as though one of the employees stole the card. I have never had an experience like this at a restaurant and I would urge people to explore other restaurants in the area. read more

We go to Kumo quite often, sometimes just order take-out when I pass by. Their sushi and sashimi is almost always fresh and tasty! The restaurant is next to another Japanese on the same street 30 seconds away. Kumo is unassuming and inside does not look fancy. Parking might be difficult over the weekend but the food is worth it. read more

This is my first time tasting the food from this establishment. My sister and I did take out. We ordered the Spider Web Roll, the Angel Roll and the Fried Duck Maki Roll. All I can say is, WOW. It seems to me that Kumo is Franklin Avenue's second runner-up when it comes to sushi. Truth be told, I actually like the ambiance in Kumo much better than Sakura Bana (which is ironically, two doors away). The atmosphere at Kumo is far more appealing, and you're not sitting on top of your neighbor. I had grown tired of overhearing the discussions next to me at SB about little Johnny not studying hard enough for his History final, or little Susie not practicing piano as much as she should. Plus we always left SB reeking of food and humidity. For our appetizer, we split the edamame and the black pepper tuna tataki. The tataki came out sans pepper. Huh? That's the best part! For my entree, I ordered the Chirasi (as per) and my friend ordered a lobster roll, a spicy tuna roll, and a couple of pieces of sushi. The sushi was very fresh. Nothing tasted nor looked old. They seem to take pride in the presentation of their food...it was all aesthetically pleasing. I would agree with some of the reviewers on here that the servers at Kumo appear disinterested at best. And they tend to hover. The woman who waited on us looked downright annoyed. She didn't crack a smile all night and seemed bothered that she was there. Our wine helped us to overlook her crotchety demeanor. It's BYOB. Kumo is a nice choice for sushi in Ridgewood, especially if you don't feel like waiting on line at Sakura Bana. When you advertise in your window that Sunday to Thursday sushi is 20% off and then you get your bill and there is no discount you ask why and the answer you get is it's for cash paying customers only. I order from this place all the time. Great deals and great food. BUTTT the one time I go in with my sister to have lunch, we walk in, order, get apps, received our entrees, and then are told, we have 9 min to leave because they close at 3. When there is no sign that says this. And they didn't bother to TELL US when we walked in at 2:40. Why would you sit us to kick us out? We had to rush and take the rest of our meal with us. We used to live in Wyckoff but moved to Florida 7 years ago. We came back to visit family and sukara bana ( our favorite and wasabi were closed) , Kumo was open late on Monday a rarity for a Japanese restaurant . The food was excellent. We had the charashi and the fish was super fresh and perfectly portioned with the amount of rice. My mother in law had the chicken teriyaki bento box and it was probably the best teriyaki she's ever had. Excellent food! read more

What a lovely and consistent place this is. First, splendid service -- the kind you thought no longer exists -- from Cindy K. and her crew. The lighting is low-key, there is no obtrusive music, the place is spotless and always feels welcoming and spacious. Those virtues would make it a destination spot in this land of crowded noisy hectic places that are the standard dining experience in this part of New Jersey. But the food is excellent, again consistently so. In many places, there is a gap -- an abyss -- between the menu description (even the listing of ingredients) and the reality that arrives on one's plate. Kumo is an ethical place: what you see on the menu is what you end up enjoying. And in one previous experience where there was a small error, Cindy K. went several thousand miles down the road to make it right. Generous portions, and the sushi fish is fresh-tasting, the presentation delightful to the eye. It's the kind of place you want to return to, not only for the good food (both sushi and cooked meals, soups, teriyaki, donburi, and tempura) but for the friendly feeling that lasts long after the last orange segments have been eaten and the (non-threatening) bill has been paid. Having not eaten here in many years, decided to switch things up and try it out and happy I did. Ordered for takeout, food was ready fast and pickup was easy. Portions are generous, prices were fair, and everything we ordered was great. Sushi rolls were ample on the fish (a rarity!) and all the hot dishes we ordered were spot on. The first time I ordered from here delivery was great and food was delicious. Ordered this evening and it was a complete disaster: delivery time was an hour and after an hour and fifteen minutes I called the restaurant to get an update on delivery. The young lady told me to hold and never came back. I called back and she told me she would call the driver and put the phone down; never came back on the phone. I called back and she rudely said the driver would be there in 10 minutes. 25 minutes later still no delivery so we cancelled via seamless. 20 minutes after that the driver arrives but we didn't except the food; Almost 2 hours from the time we ordered. Decided to switch things up and tried curbside pick up at Kumo and that was a mistake. We were notified that our order was ready but it took an hour sitting curbside for the order to actually be ready. They were severely understaffed and the girl who was trying to organize and take orders was clearly in a panic. Myself and at least four other patrons waited a minimum of a hour to retrieve curbside pick up. That being said, the sushi itself was very good but the curbside experience was some thing that would prevent me from going back until they're open to the public. read more

Solid Sushi Place. Like all places in Ridgewood this is BYOB which I am always a fan of. The place itself is nothing special BUT they do have decent quality sushi, rotating fun specialty roles, and very friendly service. Price wise, its probably $30-$40 pp if you are having 2-3 roles. There are cheaper places in the area but this place (unlike a lot of the others) is clean, always solid, and never a crazy wait. It's a good place to get a sushi fix in. For the appetizer, we ordered yakitori and it was delicious, the sauce was great and the portions were big and they even included vegetables with it. I ordered American Sushi combo with 4 tuna, 4 salmon, 4 pink salmon, and it was my first time to see and eat such big portions of the fish, it was really worth it, all tasted fresh and delicious and it comes with salad and soup. My mom ordered Seafood tempura entree, and again the portions were big and we end up sharing everything among the four of us. My brother ordered beef teriyaki and the beef were cooked medium well and the sauce was good, and same as the Unagidon that my dad ordered. Be careful when ordering via Doordash. I placed an order for a California Roll and they sent me a California Hand Roll. When I look at my order history it says California Roll, so I ask and she says no it comes up as a Hand Roll in her system. I tell her they should fix that since it must happen all the time. Kumo was not willing to do anything to fix the order. I contacted Doordash and they gave me a credit for the wrong item which was nice. read more
