This was my third try to even enter the building. On the first try, my culinary partner in crime and I were feeling mildly braindead, and assumed that Kumo was closed because all the shades were drawn. Turns out, it was just terribly sunny. Second time, we got turned away because we managed to show up in the hour that they close between lunch and dinner...of course. Started with the special, duck maki roll. It was good. Not slap your mother good, but definately worth trying. We ordered the sashimi for two. Fresh and plentiful, although the 'wasabi' was definately premixed too long ago. There was some sort of interesting sauce on the white tuna sashimi, which my date remarked was bizarre. You're usually given a choice in Japanese food, to sauce, or not to sauce? Unfortunately, the place was so busy that they'd run out of geoduck (giant clam). I can tell you secondhand that the octopus came out still mildly frozen in the middle. As a final note, please, people. I am begging you. Take off your baseball cap while sitting at the sushi bar. I'm really getting tired of seeing it, and you're embarassing your date. read more

The ambiance was great and staff were polite and nice. For the appetizer, we ordered yakitori and it was delicious, the sauce was great and the portions were big and they even included vegetables with it. I ordered American Sushi combo with 4 tuna, 4 salmon, 4 pink salmon, and it was my first time to see and eat such big portions of the fish, it was really worth it, all tasted fresh and delicious and it comes with salad and soup. My mom ordered Seafood tempura entree, and again the portions were big and we end up sharing everything among the four of us. My brother ordered beef teriyaki and the beef were cooked medium well and the sauce was good, and same as the Unagidon that my dad ordered. Since my original visit to Kumo, I have been back a couple of times. The service was definitely better than the first time. The food is good and better priced than the more popular Sakura Bana which is only a few doors down. You should have an easier time getting seated right away too than SB. The service here sucks. The staff is very rude. They make you feel super rushed and don't seem to feel bad about it. I work in the food industry and if i were to ever remove a condiment from a guest's table (in this case the soy sauce) without the guest's permission, i'd get chewed up by management. The sushi is pretty decent. I ordered the angel roll and on the menu it failed to mention that it had a wasabi sauce on the roll. They completely smothered the roll with this sauce and it was overwhelming. However the two rolls my friend ordered which were the salmon and eel were tasty. The 20% discount definitely cheapens the place. Its a shame the staff was so rude. We were going to order dessert but we felt so rushed and uncomfortable that we left and went to the froyo place across the street. Needless to say I wont be revisiting this place. read more

Be careful when ordering via Doordash. I placed an order for a California Roll and they sent me a California Hand Roll. When I look at my order history it says California Roll, so I ask and she says no it comes up as a Hand Roll in her system. I tell her they should fix that since it must happen all the time. This place has been getting better every time we go. I remember ordering lunch once and the sushi was horrible. We ended up here this past summer when Sakura bana had a friggin hour wait. Although I live closer to Westwood I prefer the Ridgewood Kumo restaurant better. Eating there puts you in the Japanese environment, which if your like me, that's half the experience. The food there is very good, people are nice and are willing to fix any meal that isn't "perfect." The sushi bar is very quick and the sushi is fine cut and served by a few of the youngest but best Sushi chef's. I am a huge fan of Japanese food restaurants and have been to many. The Kumo in Ridgewood is a good one to stop by, even if it's only for some California rolls at the sushi bar. Like most good restaurants, they have a quick delivery service as well as pick up as late as 11:00 some nights. read more

This much better than Sakura Bana in my mind. First you can have a quality noise (very little) experience without crowding or being pushed to finish. Second the service is excellent-not too much; not too little. Finally the food was a solid 4 star-worth driving a bit to get here. Sliced yellow tail belly with jalapeno and a delightful sour lemon/soy sauce was just great. Then lovely vegetable pan-fried gyoza followed by excellent rolls. I especially liked the vegetable roll with 6 different bits of vegetable in it. BYOB so bring your own beer or sake. read more

I went to this place on my day off at work because my wife wanted Sushi. We first wanted to go to a couple spots near this restaurant, however, many restaurants in the area are closed on Mondays. My wife, kid and I go into the restaurant and we were seated quickly by the server as we were the only people in the restaurant. Once we sat down, it took us a while to order because we had to get our kid situated and to be honest, we are a bit indecisive. It took us about 7-10 minutes to order and we were asked twice if we were ready. First by the waitress, who kindly left us to our menus after, and second by what seemed to be the owner/manager who rolled her eyes at us when we told her that we needed a few more minutes. How rude! When we were finally ready, the waitress and owner/manager came up to us and took down our order. While we were placing our orders, the manager repeated several times (at least 3) that in order to receive the lunch special, we would need to pay cash. We ended up ordering the spicy tuna tartare, 3 different rolls and chicken teriyaki bento box. The tuna tartar, had good sauce but it seemed as though the tuna was cooked or even from a can. It was not chunks of tuna and the tuna was not bright red in color. The rolls were all reminiscent of what you would typically get from a sushi buffet restaurant. The chicken teriyaki was good, but it's nearly impossible to make bad chicken teriyaki. I would give this place 1 star because of the rude manager and the food, however, the server was super polite, the lunch price for the rolls we ordered was 50% off with cash and there is an additional 20% off your entire check if you pay cash. I guess for the amount that we paid, it was ok, however, I am definitely not coming back to this place. read more

My friends and I (there were 4 of us) went to have dinner, and after ordering the waitress said: "you do know that's a lot of food right?", giving us dirty looks. If you do not feel like reading the whole thing....decent sushi place...had tempura, spicy tuna roll, seaweed salad and an eel avacado roll. Would rather go to Sakura Bana my self but if i wanted to save a little money and make my gf happy i would go here. So my gf works in Ridgewood and after going to Sakura Bana about two weeks ago she wanted to try its next door sushi neighbor Kumo. Upon walking in i noticed the decor was very nice and 3 sushi chefs were behind the glass ready to rock. Our service the whole night was great, very attentive. I started out with splitting a seaweed salad with my gf and some veggie tempura all for me. Everything came quickly and our sake (byob) was opened for us and ready to be drank. The seaweed salad was not overly wet like in many places and was def one of the best i have had. The tempura was pretty standard, would order again just did not crack by top 5 tempura adventures. Next i ordered 2 spicy tuna rolls and 1 eel avocado roll. This is pretty much my standard go to order at all sushi places. The eel avocado roll was good nothing special. Here is where any chance of 4 stars was ruined. My spicy tuna/crunchy he spicy tuna what ever it was, was filled with way to much panko or what ever the crunchy is. It was def used as "filler" and much more then i have ever had. I mean i work in the restaurant biz i know little tricks but this one went with way to much "crunch"/ Def the worst spicy tuna/crunchy tuna roll i have ever had. I always ask my gf her review and she said she loved the seaweed salad, her grilled squid was good not great and a little small and her specialty rolls were amazing. One great thing about Kumo is if you pay cash i think it is Sun-Thurs not sure u get 20 % off. We ended the night with a fried banana which is my gf's favorite dessert. It was pretty standard again following the theme of the night nothing special but pretty good. Bottom Line: Decent sushi place and if you go on the days when you get 20% off got using cash it is worth it. Loved this place! Since moving out to Western NJ, I have gone through major Sushi-withdrawl, this establishment has given me hope! My husband and I had the Duck Roll appetizer (worth trying-very interesting!), then salads and he had the Beef Negimaki entree. I had three different rolls, the sweet potato roll, and two others that were absolutely delicious but unfortunately I can't remember the names! The service was good, friendly and the restaurant was clean and had up to date, contemporary decor, nice for a date night! This is my favorite sushi restaurant. They have some innovative appetizers on the special board which are worth trying. Also, they have a delicious spicy edemame appetizer that is enough for two to share. My wife also love their Kumo Salad as a first course. Obviously, the fish is the star of any sushi restaurant. Kumo does not let you down. Their salmon is some of the best, and their tuna is great. We also like the spanish mackerel, eal, octopus, sea urchin, salmon roe, and sweet shrimp (one of my favorites, with the crispy fried shrimp head). They have a large number of traditional sushi rolls, and some very creative special rolls. In the winter time, try any of their udon bowls, or yosenabe (broth, seafood, and bean thread noodles). read more

A Chinese-owned, poorly run establishment that suffers from lack of experience and knowledge in Japanese cuisine and general restaurant management. Waitstaff were disinterested and lackadaisical. The decor is a hodgepodge of awkward designs ranging from a faux tree rising up around the sushi bar to tacky undulating walls and odd color combinations that have the fingerprints of a bad post-modernist interior decorator from the 1980's. Inside-out maki rolls were scantily clad with dried out rice around the nori. There were also a couple pieces of nigiri that suggested the fish may have been kept in the restaurant's inventory for a day too long. Overall, my girlfriend summed it up the best by saying, "I feel like we just ate pre-made sushi from a supermarket refrigerator." (Price Paid: $30 per person; no alcohol) read more

Living in Ridgewood you have a few good options for sushi. Our favorite by far has become Kumo. There are just certain things they do very well. If you are a salmon avocado roll type, theirs cannot be beat. The wasabi roll is not on the menu but they still make it and it's outstanding (better at eat in as they skimp a bit on the sauce when you get it to go, still worth it). Their cooked dishes are very good. I really like their take on chicken teriyaki, they cook a lot of onions into it and it really has a lot of flavor. On top of that, there is always 20% off coupons in their take out menu for Sun-Thurs (auto discount if you dine on on those days) so they can be a very inexpensive but tasty dinner during the week. The ambience of the restaurant could greatly be improved of they would lower the lights. The inside is nothing special but the place would look pretty cool with the lighting setup they have of they would turn them down. Also BYOB so always a plus. read more

Brutally bad food! If not for the reasonably pleasant wait staff, a solid 1 star. The soba noodles with vegetable had no soba and barely any vegetables. The dashi was colored water with only a faint hint of bonito and kelp. The seafood stew special (at $16 bucks) had 3 clams, 2 shrimp and a fistful of sautéed mushrooms in what tasted like reheated/canned gravy. The amuse bouche was a cucumber wrapped roll with nameless seafood and a chocolate colored sauce that tasted like dirty athletic socks. The vegetable tempura was greasy and under seasoned and the chicken katsu (my 8 year old's favorite) was dry and almost inedible. The seaweed salad was ok, but that is hard to mess up mostly. I usually avoid raw fish on a first visit to a sushi place so I can check out the basics, and boy am I glad I did that here. When they brought out a two scoop bowl of ice cream (with 4 spoons) "on the house" I had seen enough. An empty restaurant at dinner time on the weekend should have been enough of a hint to avoid this place. read more

This is my go to for fresh sushi in Northern NJ. I'll be it, the service isnt the best but the people are nice, they just stare too much. As for the sushi.. its the freshest I and my friends have found in Northern NJ with large pieces of fish and very little rice on each roll, just the way I want it! Their simple rolls are great on their own- salmon avocado and Philadelphia rolls are musts at ever visit. Ive had their sexy girl, godzilla, new year, treasure and several other rolls. So far each is delicious in its own way, they also offer brown rice on any roll for a low price. Other restaurants sometimes charge $1-$3 more JUST for brown rice instead of white rice. I've had their dessert once and that was a regret, I thought it was going to be fresh but it was defrosted premade dessert and it tasted that way Overall their sushi is so good I don't care if someone is staring or I can't order a dessert.. Im not there for either. The restaurant isn't large but decor and atmosphere are nice for groups and dates. It gets very loud with just a few tables seated. read more

I was craving sushi today, so my friend and I came here for lunch. It's a bit out of the way, but we figured we would treat ourselves to a nice lunch (we obviously work way to hard). I had the 2 roll lunch special. It consisted of two rolls, soup and salad for only $9! The soup and salad was just like your typical Japanese restaurant. The two rolls I had were great! One of the best places in the area. I had the american dream roll and california roll. They tasted very very fresh (not like most other places I have tried in this NJ area).
