Super friendly staff - helped us pick out what their most popular rolls were! Casual restaurant & sushi was super yummy.

Fantastic! Friends recommended this place and I am so glad I went. A close friend and I were meeting for dinner and we both love sushi, so we decided to try this place. The first thing I noticed about it was that there was a worm, welcoming environment and everybody who worked there seemed like they really wanted to be there. We were quickly seated in a booth and giving menus, and they brought us hot tea. Everything on the extensive menu looked fabulous! It was hard to make a choice. I eventually chose the Happy Friday roll. It was tuna, salmon, and yellow tail, avocado inside, with white tuna on the top with Chef's Special mango sauce. It was phenomenal and served on a cute little boat. My friend had the tricolor sushi assortment and said it was great. Everything was extremely fresh and tasty. This restaurant is close to work so I will definitely be back. Loved this place so much!

Parking. Small location. Friendly staff. Food is delicious. Ordering a bunch of sushi rolls and eating family style is the best.

Safe to say I'm obsessed with this restaurant. The best sushi around, quick service with both to go orders and dine in. Love that dine in is byob as well. Love all of the sushi rolls I've tried, salmon sashimi is super fresh and delicious, tempura apps and salad are always crowd pleasers and love the special rolls I've tried (although there are almost too many to choose from). Definitely would recommend to anyone in the area.

    Lunch special 3 rolls

Very friendly staff. The restaurant is very clean. We visited for the lunch special. There are much more options for the lunch special than I'm accustomed. I chose the three roll special. I had a salmon, salmon avocado, and salmon mango. They include both miso soup and a ginger salad, so no need to pick just one. The ginger was top notch. The sushi rolls had a great rice ratio, as I don't like too much rice. The fish was fresh. I had the salmon mango last as my "dessert". My wife had the yellowtail mango and said it was a better "dessert" because the fish tasted sweeter. The staff were very quick during lunch. Quick to take our order and quick to bring the check. They also were constantly clearing every little small item off our table. I don't throw this around often, but it was the kind of service I'd expect to see at a Michelin star restaurant. We'll definitely return. I'll probably get the same thing again, no regrets here. sk tl;dr yum yum for my tum tum

My husband and I came here for a sushi date and to try this place out. It was great! The service was wonderful and attentive. The inside was small but very charming. It was so crazy busy as well with people coming to pick up take out orders and after eating there we know why! The sushi was great and tasted extremely fresh. They had an insane amount of different types of special rolls that are sure to please everyone with different wrapping include soybean paper which I had on a valentine roll and it was one of the best sushi rolls I have ever had. I would definitely recommend this place for a very casual sushi date and would recommend over and over for take out which my husband and I will be getting again soon!

It also came with a choice of a regular roll. ++++ Spicy Maki Combo, which consisted of any 3 spicy rolls, did not taste or look like spicy rolls. They just looked like regular rolls, but they were still decent. There were only 4 spicy rolls to choose from though, of which I chose the Spicy Tuna, Spicy Salmon and Spicy Yellowtail. ++++ Chicken Udon was surprisingly VERY good. Even though it was just a simple chicken udon, the chicken was quite flavorful and tender. Broth was your typical miso broth/soup. Omakase, a Japanese term that translates to "I'll leave it up to the chef," is meant to be a…read moreshowcase of seasonal specialties. Yet in many Japanese restaurants, I've found that no matter when I revisit and order their omakase, the dishes, from appetizers to sushi and sashimi, all remain the same. Thankfully, this was not the case at Shumi. Here, the chefs truly strive to create edible masterpieces. I had the pleasure of enjoying innovative appetizers along with nigiri that simply melted in my mouth. Shumi's omakase was once priced at $150 per person, but in a thoughtful move to accommodate their customers, they adjusted it to $95 per person without compromising the quality of their fish. I will note that the pieces are smaller, but they still deliver the freshest taste. The staff is exceptionally gracious, dedicated to ensuring a wonderful dining experience. They are quick to replenish your tea or fill your glass as soon as it's half empty. I did, however, find the restaurant a bit chilly, and the music was a little too loud, making it difficult to hear the staff as they described each type of fish. For those who followed Master Chef Kunihiko "Ike" Aikasa from the original Shumi in Somerville, he sold that business before opening this new location in Ridgewood, which has been open since 2017. Here, he has partnered with owner David Seo. The aesthetic of the new restaurant remains clean and bright. In a competitive town like Ridgewood, where locals expect restaurants to bring their A-game, Shumi has obviously stood the test of time. I wish them many more years of excellence. Rating scale: Service: 5/5 Ambiance: 4/5 Cleanliness: 4.5/5 Food: 5/5 Overall: I'd give it 4.5 stars, but I rounded it up to 5 stars.

Speaking of the food, let's get into it. Mango Avocado Roll: Refreshing and Delicious. This was a great appetizer to my poke bowl. Oasis Poke Bowl: This was deliciously refreshing as well, however it doesn't come with any sauce. I asked for a side of teriyaki which made everything better; elevated the entire bowl. Surf N Turf: I will order this moving forward as my go-to roll. The beef was cooked to perfection and paired perfectly with the salmon. This roll itself filled me up, I thought I was going to order something else but I was done after that. Salmon and Shrimp Teriyaki: My partner gets this each time and I am always so excited to throw my fork into his plate. The teriyaki sauce here is so tasty, I want to put it on everything! The salmon and shrimp are also cooked super well, no chewiness here. Great amount of crisp on the salmon, the way it slides onto the fork is beautiful to watch. Vegetable Gyoza: The star of the show!! Best appetizer they have truly. I was so sad when there was no more. But thankful to have been able to experience such a great starter. Sweet Potato Roll: (Not pictured) The roll was ok, I liked it but felt like it was missing something. Maybe I would have liked it if it was Korean sweet potatoes. I won't order again because the menu is so extensive I can't limit myself to something I thought was ok. (4/5) Overall, Shokudo is a fantastic place to eat. It's truly an experience. The music is amazing and not overbearing, the ambiance is beautiful and there's multiple conversation pieces. What I love about looking at the items in the restaurant is how they go from traditional to contemporary. The servers were the sweetest, they all were extremely hospitable. All I can say is, I'll be back and if you go... you may see me there.

When the combo came out, it still had the spicy tuna roll. Not wanting to argue, I just said "OK," but I definitely wasn't happy. I also ordered the chicken teriyaki, which was rubbery and didn't taste like any teriyaki I'm used to. Our appetizer never came, and when we asked about it, all the waiter could do was apologize. At that point, that was all they could offer.

Your average, run of the mill Japanese/sushi restaurant…read more We came by on a hot Friday evening at around 6 PM and, unlike some of the more popular restaurants in Ridgewood, this restaurant was pretty much empty when we walked in. However, it did get pretty busy around 7 PM, but there were still available seats. For a restaurant in this area, it was pretty big with quite a few tables inside. The menu was very typical of any local neighborhood Japanese restaurant - Japanese soups and salads, appetizers, entrees like teriyaki dishes, noodles/udons, rice entrees and lots of different sushi and sushi rolls. Nothing on the menu will blow you away or be surprising, but it'll satisfy your Japanese food craving if that's what you're seeking. Our family ordered Edamame and Fried Gyoza to start and both were good. The Gyoza was actually better than I anticipated, arriving at our table hot and crispy. For entrees, we ordered our kids the Salmon Teriyaki, which was solid. There was a lot of teriyaki sauce on the salmon and the salmon was not overly cooked or dry, so that was a plus. I ordered 3 regular sushi rolls - Spicy Crab, Spicy Yellowtail and Spicy Salmon - and all were good and pretty much what I expected. My wife ordered the Sushi Regular, which came with 8 pieces of sushi and a California Roll. Once again, all good. Nothing that was off about any of it. We also ordered a Nabeyaki Udon, but I didn't get to try any of it, however, our kids ate a lot of it, which was a good sign that it was good. Like I said, there was nothing that was bad here and everything was good, but nothing is spectacular either.
