Reservations are by phone only, which adds to its charm. We started with the miso soup, kani salad, and shrimp tempura--all delicious. The miso soup was flavorful, the kani salad was fresh, and the tempura had a perfectly light, crisp batter. For rolls, the Surf & Turf and Iso Maki are absolute must-orders. The Sushi & Sashimi Boat for Two is generous enough for 3-4 people if you add appetizers or rolls. The first thing you'll notice is the freshness, especially the fatty tuna (toro), it truly melts in your mouth. This was a great place to have a meal for a date night. We made a reservation over the phone, and it was a small, intimate, BYOB restaurant. The place isn't too big, but the service was great. The presentation and the food was also delicious. We ordered edamame to share and then 4 rolls to split, which was more than enough food. So I am a regular at another Ridgewood sushi joint and people always talk about Blu and if we have tried it. Well when we were craving sushi for the second time in a week I said let's try it to change up the selection. Well it was phenomenal. Service was great. The rolls were all fresh and delicious. Each one better than the last. Wonderful presentation. They were crazy tasty. It's nice to know there is another great sushi place here. I try sushi at places people recommend as good and nothing compares to what I was used to. This does. It's as good as I have had. I got takeout sushi from Blu. Sushi is one of my favorite foods, and I wanted to try something new. I got a free miso soup which was nice, and tasted more earthy or umami tasting than others. My disappointment came with the Sushi combo. The pieces of sashimi were smaller than the rice beneath it. The taste of the sushi was pretty good, though. The hostess was nice enough to open up my order when I picked it up to make sure it was brown rice, like I asked. I appreciated that hospitality. Albacore White Tuna was insane. Fresh and so tasty. The salmon and tuna were so fresh. They melted on my tongue. White tail jalapeño appetizer and edamame were excellent. We ordered the yellowtail jalapeño which is my favorite every sushi restaurant I go to. Customer service staff was on it and the sushi chef was attentive as well. Small joint and it was cozy. It is a BYOB establishment. So we brought the beers, hard liquor, and the sake! They had all the right glassware for each type of drink. One of the "freshest" Sushi places I've been too. Place was very clean, excellent customer service and of course phenomenal food. We went on a Sunday afternoon. Everything we had was so delicious. One thing that extra stood out for us was the "Dancing Scallops". My best friend and I are quite particular with scallops whether breaded/fried/ or steamed. It's always a miss or hit....but 2 pieces was not enough (an order comes with 4 pieces) . If we didn't order 3 rolls each and boy choy we def would have ordered more of the dancing Scallops. This was my first time trying Blu Sushi. We started off with the miso soup which tasted no different than miso soups at other sushi spots, enjoyable as always. Then we had the dynamite shrimp which was out of this world!! The rolls we had were the salmon avocado roll, eel cucumber roll, tiger roll (which was salmon, tuna, yellowtail and eel on top with spicy tuna inside) which was my dad's favorite, amazing roll (which was shrimp tempura and spicy tuna with pepper tuna on top) and the angry bird roll (shrimp tempura , spicy tuna, avocado) which was my favorite roll! The fish was very fresh! The rolls were a bit small for the price point. I've gotten similar quality sushi for much less. But this spot is closer to me. Maybe next time I'll dine in! read more

What we got: Dynamite Shrimp Agedashi Tofu Kani salad Angry bird with regular seaweed roll King tuna roll The 7 fishes roll California roll Nabe yaki udon We called to see if there was a wait, but luckily they had a table available on a Saturday night! We arrived and all the tables were taken so I'm glad they had space for us. You can tell they were very busy with both dine in and pick up orders so we knew there was going to be a wait with our rolls which we didn't get mad about since we had appetizers. I've been searching high and low for a fried scallop roll. Had my favorite one in Florida and it took me eight (8) years to find one up north. Of course the two aren't the same but both delicious. My favorite sushi spot in Bergen county!! My fiancé and I drive 30 mins just to get sushi or their chicken katsu and we always recommend this place to our friends and family! The service is SO welcoming and the staff are just genuinely kind people that want you to feel comfortable while you're having a meal. One of the servers, Sho, is my fav! She's always a delight to speak with and has the best recommendations :) the place is cozy and we always make a reservation for the weekends bc it does get packed. It's also BYOB. This review is for a takeout order. So it's very possible that dining in offers a better experience. Was in the mood for Japanese food and decided to Uber Eats from Blu Sushi after seeing all the glowing reviews on Yelp. I ordered a seafood salad, Chirashi, shrimp & vegetable tempura, and a couple of sushi rolls. When the food was delivered, the bag was dripping with sauce. When I checked the items, I discovered it was the sauce for the tempura. The lid was loose and all the sauce was gone. It did not help that the food was packed in a styrofoam container. So all the sauce leaked out of the container onto the bag and the other items. As for the other items, they weren't very good either. The seafood salad was tiny, which is fine if it was like $5, but it's double that. That's ridiculous. I've been to Michelin star Japanese restaurants where a $10 salad was bigger than that. Then there's the Chirashi. It only had 4 types sashimi, plus sweet egg, one cooked shrimp, and imitation crab. Whenever I see the use of imitation crab in a Chirashi (or most other Japanese dishes for that matter), it immediately tells me the restaurant is cutting corners and probably not using the freshest and highest quality ingredients. The seafood salad also had imitation crab. So that's 50% of my order. The two sushi rolls I got were ok. They were certainly better than the other items, but by that point the entire meal was already ruined for me. read more

We went to this sushi spot once before on a date night but this week we did it for a date-lunch. It was amazing. We frequent a lot of AYCE places in the area so it's always a little tough the amount you get for the price particularly dinner, but Blu it's not match when it comes to the quality. Blu is probably the highest quality sushi we've ever had. For lunch we split the sushi sashimi combo, and lunch 2 roll Maki combo, with an additional special roll. We couldn't stop raving about the quality of the sushi. It really was melt in your mouth delicious. Additionally, if you check in on yelp, you get a free Edamame App! which was a fun surprise for all you Yelpers out there! The atmosphere is also quite nice for a date night/lunch. Impressive addition to the sushi scene in town. Authentic in a cozy and upscale room, boasting a classically trained Japanese sushi chef and screamingly fresh fish. For mains we ate chirashi, sushi regular and several orders of uni and ikura nigiri as appetizers. First off you can taste the sea in all the fish -- which in its simplest preparation should be the star. I'm not big on specialty rolls that mask poor quality fish with condiments, frying and sauces. They offer such rolls here too -- but we did not order any. The chirashi was a wonderful balance of differently textured fish with pickled daikon, and tamago over sushi rice -- garnished with shredded daikon and shiso. One of the best such bowls I've had recently -- and bargain priced at $23 for a large portion -- with a soup or salad starter. The sushi regular at $20 was fine -- smaller portions than those served at other joints in town -- but executed flawlessly. I especially like the chefs deft hand with thinly sliced fish which helps keep it tender -- and in the classic sense -- allows the chef to check each slice for parasites -- something you can't do with thickly sliced fish. Make no mistake. Eating raw fish can be dangerous -- and if the sushi chef is not slicing the fish thin enough to check each cut for parasites -- it's a crap shoot. In that sense -- bigger or more is not always better. The imported Japanese uni was spectacular! Silky and nutty -- bordering on sweet -- without the bitterness that you occasionally get with the California variety. I like the chef's choice of an oblong shape to all the nigiri rolls -- makes them easier to handle with chop sticks -- a nice change of pace to the usual cylindrical style found in most restaurants. The ikura was equally fresh tasting -- each pearl exploding with briny flavor. The uni was very fairly priced at $8 a piece -- the ikura was $7 for two pieces. Perfectly brewed gratis hot green tea was the perfect accompaniment to our meal (this place is byo too) and service was attentive and engaged. Our server (Seven?) was chatty and filled us in on the Blu backstory. The sushi chef (Masu) was gracious and explained his technique and the origin of the fish we ate. If I have any gripe with Blu it's with the lack of sushi bar seating -- which puts a distance between the diner and the chef. The cramped space dictates this choice -- either more tables or sushi bar seating. They chose the former -- presumably to accommodate more covers. I can see where this tight space can become a comfort issue on a busy night. We ate on a late Sunday afternoon when the restaurant was empty -- seated without reservations -- so maybe our experience is not representative of how Blu works when it gets busy. We will try it again on a busy weekend evening for comparison. Price-wise I found Blu to fall right in line with the prevailing rates in Ridgewood -- for first quality sushi and sashimi. Cheaper than some of the more pretentious joints in town -- more than the cash discount places that hawk heavily sauced and fried rolls. Top Tip: Get the Japanese uni -- and definitely ask the chef about the origin of the fish. He will educate you and steer you to places you may not have been before. read more

Blu Sushi comes highly recommended in the Ridgewood area. I don't think it was the #1 spot but it was up there. This is a small place so you will be eating in an intimate environment. The food is your standard sushi spot food. We started with the vegetable tempura and it was solid but nothing to it. I wish they had more of an assortment of vegetables. They only had broccoli, eggplant, and a sweet potato. The edamame needed some more seasoning. The sushi was fresh and you could tell. The spicy tuna roll and salmon avocado were spot on. They also had specialty rolls that hit the spot. You can't beat the lunch special though with 3 rolls for $16 or 2 rolls for $12 I believe. This place lived up to my expectations and I would come back to try more of the sushi items. My advice is stick to the sushi... it is what they do best! read more

My family had been raving about Blu Sushi for months and insisted that they introduce me to the small, cozy Japanese restaurant. They made a reservation for a Saturday evening, which was clearly a wise idea, since the place was packed! As they had mentioned, the service was beyond sweet, friendly, and efficient. The food was also largely delightful. We each began the experience with a bowl of Miso Soup, which included a generous amount of bold miso paste, tofu, seaweed, and scallions. Speaking of scallions, we also shared the Beef Negimaki appetizer, which consisted of thinly-sliced, but tough, beef wrapped around long strips of scallion and pan-fried. As I said, the meat was a bit chewy, but the side of teriyaki dipping sauce helped to soften it up a bit, making it easier to consume. We also split an order of Fish Tacos, an odd, yet intriguing, offering for an Asian restaurant. The soft tortillas contained wild mahi mahi, which we found a bit dry. Like with the beef, the addition of the chef's special sauce and Asian slaw improved the dish. The taco's side salad with spicy aioli dressing was fabulous, though. Lastly, we could not go to Blu without ordering some of their sushi. While the Eel Avocado Roll was rather straightforward, their 10-piece Golden Billie roll included tuna, salmon, yellowtail, and avocado wrapped with soy paper and topped with tobiko and the chef's special sauce. The 6-piece Iso Maki roll was a similarly interesting blend of tuna, yellowtail, salmon, avocado and caviar in white seaweed and served with a side of spicy dipping sauce. The sushi was all fresh and tasty, though I think my preference of substituting brown rice for the white made the rolls a bit mushy. Blu was BYO, so we were able to enjoy a bottle of prosecco while we appreciated the quaint dining area, gracious service, and good food. read more
