Great food, nice little variety for a small asian market in the area, the setting looks very nice, clean & the service is good. The people here are friendly.

    Spam and sweet egg Musubi

Tawara Mart worked with us to make a platter of Spam and sweet egg Musubi for my daughter's school's movie night of "Lilo & Stitch" to celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage month. No lie, EXACTLY as good as we get in Hawaii. Each wrapped individually and ready to go. Mahalo to Kiko and her team to prepare this for us. It really completed the night!

Much better than going to Edgewater! Great food, Japanese sweets, to go food!! It's fabulous and right next door is the BEST place for Sushi !! TAWARA You will NOT be disappointed!! Owner Kiko Ishii worked in a renowned bakery in Tokyo, and has taken her love of baking to develop a creative bakery menu for her store. You will find original Japanese-style breads and pastries, many which are unique to Tawara Mart. Tawara Mart also serves homemade prepared food that's ready to take home, inspired by Japan's 'depa-chika', department store food halls, and 'conbini', Japanese convenience stores. As well as sushi & omusubi & other well-known foods, here you will also find a style of Japanese cooking which is not represented well in America, which is 'yoshoku' cooking, or Japanese western-style food. Yoshoku food has been loved by the Japanese for so long that much of the food is now considered nostalgic. Tawara Mart also carries Japanese groceries, which are carefully curated by Kiko and Greg, her husband and co-owner of Tawara Mart. The couple have backgrounds in design, which you will find evident across the store. 'Zakka' are Japanese small products, and Kiko & Greg try to find the most unusual items to carry in their store. These items are sometimes historical, nostalgic, useful, beautiful, or just plain silly. Tawara Mart is just a small store in a strip mall in northern NJ, but it's ambitions are big. Oh, and there's also soft serve ice cream. Here you can find pineapple Dole Whip.

First time trying their premade/to go meals and it didn't disappoint. This was so good and enough for two people for lunch. It was packed when we went too and lots of people were picking up meals. Definitely looking forward to trying more stuff next time.

Highly recommend! Our bi weekly trip to Edgewater for Japanese groceries has turned to a once-every-2-months ordeal due to COVID. Tawara Mart was so great during quarantine for the staples to hold my family over until the next big trip to Edgewater. We also love their baked goods and prepared foods! Their melon pan is perfection! ありがとう!

    Haul # 1

I'm Japanese, and thus feel entitled to say that this place is a LEGIT Japanese specialty store. The homemade Japanese pastries in particular are incredible, niche, skilled creations (start with the croissants and melon bread)--and honestly, almost *too* affordably priced; I'd pay double! In fact, I'm considering asking them to cater pastries for my wedding celebration in Jersey... They have an excellent selection of Japanese ingredients, and little adorable tchotchkes that I end up buying $50 of every time I stop by. On Thanksgiving, I was touched to see that they were giving away bags of cubed homemade bread for you to use for stuffing (which we did, and it was delicious). For free! Just a testament to the type of generous neighborhood business this is. I'll be supporting this great small business every chance I get.

To the people in hot prepared foods:…read more I wanted to take a moment to congratulate your prepared foods department on accomplishing something I didn't think was possible: making chicken completely inedible. This afternoon my wife purchased two portions of your "Harvest Chicken" from the hot foods counter. When she brought it home, we sat down expecting dinner. Instead, we were treated to what can only be described as a culinary experiment in dehydration. I didn't realize chicken could actually reach the texture of corrugated cardboard, but your staff has apparently mastered that technique. Large sections were so hard that even a fork had trouble getting through them, which is an impressive achievement if the goal was to create building materials rather than food. It's honestly a shame, because an animal had to give its life for that meal, only for it to be cooked into something no human should reasonably be expected to eat. I have seen more care put into kindergarten cooking projects. In the end, most of it went straight into the garbage, which seemed to be the most appropriate place for it. For comparison, a stop at Burger King would have been a noticeable upgrade in quality. You may want to take a look at what's happening behind that counter, because if this is the standard being served to customers, something has gone very wrong.
