There is so much to be found in Tawara Mart--shopping while hungry meant a basket full of soba, mango/strawberry pan, fresh carrot dressing, onigiri, milk tea KitKat, chicken dishes, and more--and I can't wait to come back to try more things. Seeing all the little knickknacks made this such a delightful Sunday! I used to venture into Edgewater once in a while to stock up on treats, but now that I know this place exists, I am just over the moon knowing that I can come here; I found this place by accident when coming into town for the farmers' market. A cute little japanese store next to the restaurant Tawara that sells limited produce, baked goods, other edibles and gifts I usually come here looking for interesting foodstuffs. They have a very very good brownie that is deliciously rich and chocolatey. While you're not really getting an bargain here, it is good to see what they're selling. Owner Kiko Ishii worked in a renowned bakery in Tokyo, and has taken her love of baking to develop a creative bakery menu for her store. You will find original Japanese-style breads and pastries, many which are unique to Tawara Mart. Tawara Mart also serves homemade prepared food that's ready to take home, inspired by Japan's 'depa-chika', department store food halls, and 'conbini', Japanese convenience stores. As well as sushi & omusubi & other well-known foods, here you will also find a style of Japanese cooking which is not represented well in America, which is 'yoshoku' cooking, or Japanese western-style food. Yoshoku food has been loved by the Japanese for so long that much of the food is now considered nostalgic. Tawara Mart also carries Japanese groceries, which are carefully curated by Kiko and Greg, her husband and co-owner of Tawara Mart. The couple have backgrounds in design, which you will find evident across the store. 'Zakka' are Japanese small products, and Kiko & Greg try to find the most unusual items to carry in their store. Japanese convenience store food are my all time guilty pleasure. I wanted to try everything so I got a teriyaki salmon onigiri (rice ball), pork cutlet curry bento box, miso ramen, and a choco bun. I enjoyed all the different flavors and textures of each dish. The curry from the pork cutlet stood out to me. I like how it packed a punch and was thick and rich in flavor. Every bite left me wanting more. There's a good helping of vegetables all soaked up in delicious curry! The rice was much needed in between each bite of curry and the pork cutlets were perfectly crispy and great dipped in curry. There's also some pickled vegetables to rinse the palate between bites. The miso ramen is decent considering it's pre-made and meant to be reheated at home. I'd probably get it again when I'm craving some inexpensive ramen, just under $10. The ramen and toppings sit on top of the container in a separate compartment and the soup is on the bottom of the container making sure the noodles stay springy. The toppings include 2 pieces of pork char siu, bean sprouts, naruto, and burdock. The onigiri was standard. The rice is separated from the seaweed to keep the seaweed crunchy. There's bits of salmon sprinkled throughout the rice. The choco bun had a chocolate custard filling that tastes refreshing. It's not as sweet as it looks. The chocolate is more of a dark chocolate with a bit of bitterness that makes you take another bite and another. The bun was soft and complemented the filling well. Came here for the first time today and it won't be my last! For someone who is not Japanese, and loves to cook, I was extremely intrigued and excited about the wide variety of ingredients and groceries they have - from different types of soy sauces i always saw in recipes but could never find, to many different types of noodles frozen and fresh They thoughtfully included tags with descriptions in english on every single item they have stocked - so dont be intimidated to go in if you are not familiar with Japanese. They also have a really nice selection of grab-and-go foods. I got the spicy beef udon noodles, and heated them up when i got home and WOW! Flavorful and delicious (and i only paid $5.95!) I am looking forward to my next trip to Tawara Mart. UPDATE: I come here allll the time now. Their baked goods are absolutely insanely good (must try the brownies). The prepared food is bomb (my fav is spicy beef udon noodles). I've gotten so many great things here and getting to try new things is my absolute favorite. also got almost a lb of fresh ginger for only around $2.00 :) read more

I'm sooooo happy this little gem of a place opened up in this town. Beats having to drive to Ridgewood or Edgewater. Prices are very reasonable and I love how they label all their products and suggest ways to enjoy. I do wish they had milk bread loaves, though. I want to enourage the owners with this revieww for further improvements. I think as a specialty gifts/knick-knack store, this store succeeds. However the selection isnt so adequate for someone cooking japanese food. I realize they probably wanted to keep the sstore clean and organized. But as is, it does not have critical mass of items to be able to produce the usual recipes. I'd like to see tHis store expand the items to cover more ingredients. read more

I'm Japanese, and thus feel entitled to say that this place is a LEGIT Japanese specialty store. The homemade Japanese pastries in particular are incredible, niche, skilled creations (start with the croissants and melon bread)--and honestly, almost *too* affordably priced; I'd pay double! In fact, I'm considering asking them to cater pastries for my wedding celebration in Jersey... They have an excellent selection of Japanese ingredients, and little adorable tchotchkes that I end up buying $50 of every time I stop by. On Thanksgiving, I was touched to see that they were giving away bags of cubed homemade bread for you to use for stuffing (which we did, and it was delicious). For free! Just a testament to the type of generous neighborhood business this is. I'll be supporting this great small business every chance I get. read more

So this place is extremely fantastic. But thank god the kid behind the counter can decipher what you are buying. It's 100% authentic and I am 100% basic. In the refrigerated case, the chicken katsu, those Hawaiian style seaweed sandwiches, the pasta salad w the peanut sauce are all very delicious at cafeteria prices. My ride-along usually grabs some fancy looking chocolate or bright colored candy. Last time she grabbed some pikachu curry sauce. Yes you read that correctly. I recently upped my rice game and am looking forward to get some imports in the shop on my next roll through. read more

First let me say I usually love this place. However, today was another story. They only had 1 plain Inari. I asked if they could make a few more. They said come back in 10-15 minutes - no problem. I spent over a $100 & waited. It got busy so I took a walk. Returned 25-30 minutes later & asked to check on my order. The girl checks & they say 10-15 minutes. What exactly did I wait 30 minutes for. I left & am considering never returning. What a wonderful store! I enjoy Japanese cooking and sometimes it's hard to find good quality authentic ingredients without making the trek out to Edgewater. Tawara Mart has a beautifully curated selection of Japanese ingredients and the shelves are labeled with descriptions of of the items in English so you can be confident you have found exactly what you are looking for. As excited as I was by all the ingredients (and good prices!) I was blown away by the fresh baked goods! The chocolate horn was BETTER than the ones I remember enjoying in Tokyo (the filling is amazing!) and the square bread was out of this world - impossibly soft, perfectly flavored - I made tamago sando and the right bread was the missing ingredient that made all the difference. I hadgood been searching for shokupan and its so rare to find the real thing! The giftware and stationery selection is wonderful and at check out I loaded up on freshly made and perfectly hot croquettes - I am going to have dreams about the corn and cream karokke! I also loaded up on specialty kit kats - so hard to find in the US (especially at a good price!) and there were so many unique flavors to choose from. Tawara Mart in Rasmey New Jersey is truly a gem. This Japanese specialty store is stocked wall to wall with Japanese imports. What is most impressive about Tawara Mart is the variety of Japanese delicacies, fresh baked goods and take out meals prepared daily in their kitchen. A truly unique experience. Whoa! Didn't see this coming but they had the best blueberry muffins I've ever had, ever. HOMEMADE BREAD is something I'm not used to eating regularly, so that was another thing that I found really remarkable there. Reasonably priced items for a fancy neighb like Ramsey is not common. I noticed they're always putting out different prepared foods to go, perfect to take to work or home and heat up later.
