Great food, nice little variety for a small asian market in the area, the setting looks very nice, clean & the service is good. The people here are friendly.

    Spam and sweet egg Musubi

Tawara Mart worked with us to make a platter of Spam and sweet egg Musubi for my daughter's school's movie night of "Lilo & Stitch" to celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage month. No lie, EXACTLY as good as we get in Hawaii. Each wrapped individually and ready to go. Mahalo to Kiko and her team to prepare this for us. It really completed the night!

Much better than going to Edgewater! Great food, Japanese sweets, to go food!! It's fabulous and right next door is the BEST place for Sushi !! TAWARA You will NOT be disappointed!! Owner Kiko Ishii worked in a renowned bakery in Tokyo, and has taken her love of baking to develop a creative bakery menu for her store. You will find original Japanese-style breads and pastries, many which are unique to Tawara Mart. Tawara Mart also serves homemade prepared food that's ready to take home, inspired by Japan's 'depa-chika', department store food halls, and 'conbini', Japanese convenience stores. As well as sushi & omusubi & other well-known foods, here you will also find a style of Japanese cooking which is not represented well in America, which is 'yoshoku' cooking, or Japanese western-style food. Yoshoku food has been loved by the Japanese for so long that much of the food is now considered nostalgic. Tawara Mart also carries Japanese groceries, which are carefully curated by Kiko and Greg, her husband and co-owner of Tawara Mart. The couple have backgrounds in design, which you will find evident across the store. 'Zakka' are Japanese small products, and Kiko & Greg try to find the most unusual items to carry in their store. These items are sometimes historical, nostalgic, useful, beautiful, or just plain silly. Tawara Mart is just a small store in a strip mall in northern NJ, but it's ambitions are big. Oh, and there's also soft serve ice cream. Here you can find pineapple Dole Whip.

First time trying their premade/to go meals and it didn't disappoint. This was so good and enough for two people for lunch. It was packed when we went too and lots of people were picking up meals. Definitely looking forward to trying more stuff next time.

Highly recommend! Our bi weekly trip to Edgewater for Japanese groceries has turned to a once-every-2-months ordeal due to COVID. Tawara Mart was so great during quarantine for the staples to hold my family over until the next big trip to Edgewater. We also love their baked goods and prepared foods! Their melon pan is perfection! ありがとう!

    Haul # 1

I'm Japanese, and thus feel entitled to say that this place is a LEGIT Japanese specialty store. The homemade Japanese pastries in particular are incredible, niche, skilled creations (start with the croissants and melon bread)--and honestly, almost *too* affordably priced; I'd pay double! In fact, I'm considering asking them to cater pastries for my wedding celebration in Jersey... They have an excellent selection of Japanese ingredients, and little adorable tchotchkes that I end up buying $50 of every time I stop by. On Thanksgiving, I was touched to see that they were giving away bags of cubed homemade bread for you to use for stuffing (which we did, and it was delicious). For free! Just a testament to the type of generous neighborhood business this is. I'll be supporting this great small business every chance I get.

Fresh sushi and good fish, albeit smaller portions than we've had elsewhere in North Jersey, but…read morethe prices here were also a bit lower. However the slices of salmon sashimi were thinner than what I've had elsewhere. The spicy salmon was the absolute worst I've ever tasted. It had the taste of mayo with the consistency of melted movie theater nacho cheese sauce. We poked around and could not find much meat. I honestly thought they might have just put spicy mayo in the roll and forgot to add the spicy salmon. I will never return, the spicy salmon here made me lose all faith. But I have met people who enjoy mayonnaise sandwiches, so this might be for someone, just not me. The waitress was super nice. And the restaurant was very clean.

I got the miso soup with shumai. We also ordered the tempura vegetables, which were delicious. For rolls, we had a variety of classic and specialty rolls. Some of the specialty rolls had way too much crunchy stuff on top, and the rolls looked like a whole pile of sushi vs an actual roll. The specialty rolls were too much fluff and just not so good. The standard sushi rolls were fine and decent. It was all yummy but not the best sushi we have had. They gave us salmon skin rolls on the house, which was a nice surprise! Delish! The establishment is casual and cozy. The prices were reasonable. We overall had a good experience here.

I think it would be enough to feed 2 people, but if you have more than that, you probably want to order another roll or two. Everything here was pretty good. The fish seemed average freshness. The naruto roll was unique with cucumber around the outside, though the tuna was not really spicy. I specifically thought the sea bream (white fish) sashimi was good, as it had a creamy taste and consistency. Julie Roll ($15) - This roll was delicious, with a nice combo of yellowtail, salmon, and tuna in one roll. In addition, there was mango for some sweetness, avocado, and cucumber in there. It was topped with red fish eggs and had a soy wrapper around it, which made it a little unique. Beauty and Beast Roll ($15) - This is sort of a 2-in-1 roll, as half of the pieces have tuna on top and half have avocado on top. There is also shrimp tempura inside along with cucumber and eel. Another tasty roll. The restaurant has a very chill vibe inside. There were a couple others dining in as well for Sunday lunch. The staff are super friendly and even gave us a side of edamame on the house. The service speed was pretty quick. Overall, if you are in the mood for some sushi (either dining in or take-out), I think Nigiri Sushi would be a very good option, particularly if you are in the Franklin Lakes area.

Being that I was attending a pool party today I offered to pick up sandwiches for lunch for a group of 9 and called in an order for 2 hours later. Sadly 3 of the sandwiches arrived on ciabatta bread instead of focaccia, which was quite disappointing as the only reason the sandwiches were picked were specifically to get the focaccia. And, one of the sandwiches we asked for no sauce as it was spicy and she can't eat spicy, and it arrived with sauce, smothered all over. I understand everyone has an off day but almost half our orders were wrong. If they had run out of focaccia for example, I wish they would just have called us so we could have adjusted our order. Not even sure if that's the case or if they were just rushing in the kitchen and just threw everything on ciabatta but either way today was not a good day for Morano's.

Janice, the owner, mentioned that this "sometimes happens with last-minute orders" and said she would look into it and call me back. There was no apology, just an implication that the issue was due to my timing. I never received a call. I ended up having to adjust my menu at the last minute, which was stressful, and the lack of follow-up from a place like Morano's felt unprofessional. I had hoped that once the Thanksgiving rush calmed down, someone might reach out with an explanation or apology, but that never happened. Overall, a very disappointing experience.
