We stopped by Tokyo Cafe in Westwood after driving by many times. Waking in your greeted with a large fishtank with many small fish. The restaurant has a handful of tables in the main room and a small sushi bar with a few more tables in the side room. It happened to be restaurant week and the restaurant had a deal of 3 special rolls and an appetizer for $36 which was a great deal We needed up getting the fried gyoza app and rock shrimp to start, both were fried perfectly and had great flavor . We then got sushi, all of it tasting fresh and vibrant with colors. Overall experience was great and would recommend for a quiet sushi dinner. read more

We came here for restaurant week which was a great deal. You got an appetizer and three specialty rolls. There was a lot of different appetizers to pick from and the vegetable tempura was definitely my favorite. It was light crunchy, and you still tasted the flavor of the vegetables was. The pork gyoza was also really tasty. We had a variety of different specialty rolls. They were all good, not great. We had ginger ice cream for dessert which was outstanding and had little crystals of ginger in it and perfect ginger flavor. I would come back here and try some of the other menu items, Besides the sushi. The place is on a main road but never really noticed it. There is no parking lot so you have to park on the street but we didn't have an issue. It's also BYOB and the service was really nice and they didn't rush us at all. read more

I give the food 4 stars because we ordered pad Thai chicken and red snapper dinner which were both very good Price is right as well! We would not eat in again because it's very clear they would rather accept take out orders than provide a great dining experience The main ding area is very bright so we asked to sit in the back where the lighting was dimmer and we were told that area was only for reservations. The self declared owner of Tokyo Cafe claimed to be too busy to serve me and my friend, after we were sat down in her empty restaurant. When I asked why, she said to get out of her restaurant and that she could refuse service to anyone because she is the business owner. She was so hostile that I felt as though she was gearing up to do something really racist so I took my phone out and began recording. I will be uploading the video to youtube. My friend has experienced this type of treatment all over Westwood unfortunately. Being a black man in Westwood NJ is not easy unfortunately. We tried out the Thai cuisine at Tokyo Cafe but did not enjoy it as mush as we hoped. Next time we will definitely stick to the Japanese dishes (and sushi!). The lemongrass shrimp was actually pretty good. The shrimp was flavorful and had a nice texture. The accompanying veggies with sauce were pretty good too. It all paired well with white rice. The vegetable portion size was enough for two meals, although we split the shrimp to avoid eating them leftover. The Pad Thai noodles with chicken was a bit disappointing. I think that they went heavy on the fish sauce because one flavor was dominating the dish. I've had better Pad Thai elsewhere. read more

We ordered a couple of rolls the night before Thanksgiving which was a huge mistake. We got severely sick which basically ruined our Thanksgiving since we couldn't stomach anything. When we reported this to the restaurant, they said they can't do anything since no one else has reported being sick. Not even an apology was given. When I asked for at least a partial refund for our order, they refused. I wasn't asking for them to be shut down, just a couple of bucks back for the inconvenience at least. Vegetarians!! This place a delightful selection of veggie sushi for you! It's not the most extensive menu but it has about 12 options on their menu. Locally this is a solid spot! There are some veggie Thai options here as well but I didn't try them. There is metered parking around Westwood and the cafe is more on the periphery so you'll find a spot fairly easily. The cafe has a cute interior w/ entertaining paintings, colorful pillows and dark wood furniture. I had the lunch special- the salad had a lovely ginger dressing and two veggie rolls; avocado cucumber & Kampyo (squash) Roll. I couldn't resist and ordered an additional Oshinko (radish) Roll. My friend had the wasbi roll and something else that I can't recall - but we both really enjoyed the meal! PS. Beyond Sushi in nyc is still the absolute best for vegans and vegetarians who enjoy eating sushi! But North Jersey wise Tokyo Cafe is decent spot to satisfy your craving. read more

If you believe in treating all people equally regardless of skin color, skip this restaurant. I took my friend to order some fried bananas and was told by the owner that she was too busy. So I asked if I should also order some sushi to make it a bigger order and she said no and to get out of her restaurant. My friend does tons of Yelp reviews and said out loud that Yelp will find this very interesting and the owner decided to call the police on us for threatening to do a Yelp review. The owner tried to say "her" customer base does not care because she has been in business for 16 years. She must think all of her customers could care less about her picking and choosing who she plans to service based on skin color... hmmm... isn't Westwood supposed to be stigma free? There was a family eating and keeping their heads down throughout the entire encounter. Maybe she is right and that most of her customers won't care about them racially profiling patrons. This is not so much a food review as it is a response to Noel C's and Nadia B's reviews. As the only "Asian" of the family that was dining there when you posted your reviews (bc you've got to double-up your negative reviews, don't you?), I did not care for my family to be profiled as "Asian". In fact, I did not see the situation as a race issue until I saw your reviews. To double down on this, my family (my husband is not Asian, btw) was enjoying our meal and I personally didn't even register either of you as "Black". What I saw was that we got to the restaurant shortly after it opened so they probably weren't busy when we made our orders plus they were indeed short staffed. You came in an hour after we were there wanting dessert and were informed that they were busy and it would take a while. You offered to order sushi in order to expedite service but that didn't make any difference. So then you threatened a negative review on Yelp. That's when things got ugly and the owner asked you to leave. You stood there antagonizing her while she called the police and tried to drag my family into it by insinuating/stating that we were served bc we were Asian. Also it was not our place to intervene and you were starting to freak out my special needs son (not that it would matter to you). I cannot answer as to why they couldn't serve you in a timely manner although I'm sure it had to do with staffing, but I did not see it as a race issue until you tried to drag us into it and I certainly didn't feel the issue was bc you were "Black" until you posted these reviews. Tokyo Cafe is a family owned restaurant which has been operating for 16 years. They do have an extensive faithful clientele who not only love the food but also the family. To those claiming racism, you are so wrong. Tokyo Cafe has no extra staff at the moment due to the shift in normalcy during this pandemic but before March 2020, Tokyo Cafe had African American staff, Caucasian and Hispanic. They are professional and kind. I have been a loyal customer for years and yesterday when I called to place an order and to ask for it to be delivered, I was told that they were busy (I was happy to hear that they were), the owner asked if I could pick up and like an understanding adult and compassionate human being I said yes! When I got there to pick up my food, the restaurant was empty but they were preparing for a private party and I had no issues at all. Things like this happen! In the world we live in it's important to remember to support each other and be kind. There is no need for negativity. If you do not like a restaurant, don't go there, move on and find one that you love! Many families love Tokyo Cafe and that won't change!! read more

New neighborhood go-to for sushi and Japanese food. Used to be a little hole-in-the-wall but they (semi) recently renovated/expanded and now have some additional seating. I CRAVE their avocado-mango salad...it comes with crushed peanuts on top and sesame soy dressing. Perfect start to your delicious and well-priced sushi meal. They have bento boxes during lunch AND dinner (score!) and a nice selection of teas. Ambiance is quiet, BYOB, there's never been a wait during the times I've been there, friendly, helpful service. Rounding out my experience...when I opened my leftovers for lunch the next day I found they had re-packed the sushi as if it were a new order...packaged chopsticks, new soy sauce, fresh ginger and wasabi. This review is based solely on take out. Tokyo Cafe has been our regular sushi delivery for the past 3 months. We have ordered 6 to 10 times. My wife and I both seem to stick to the Japanese side of the menu much more than the Thai side. Some of my favorite items are: Hamachi Kama (Broiled yellowtail neck w. ponzo sauce), Crispy Tofu (fried bean curd served w. bonito flakes & tempura sauce), and the Katsu Don (bread crumb pork cooked w. egg over rice). One of these nights we need to get over there in person. The delivery items are VERY well packed and the hot food is warm and the cold food is cold. Delivery is pretty quick and efficient. read more

I really like Tokyo Cafe a lot. Its a great alternative to typical fast Asian cuisine. Its a cool and very casual place to hang out and eat as well as being a super place for a variety of take out options. I really enjoy Thai food and my wife is a Sushi fan so we both get a little of each.We have always had tasty food here cooked with much more care then most places. The place itself is quaint and laid back. Service is quick and attentive. The restaurant is rarely busy but I notice they do take a lot of take out orders. I was in the area traveling for work and looked up "sushi" and came based on the other reviews. They had delicious and well priced sushi. I also ordered an avocado salad, which was different than any I had had previously. This was lettuce, a few tomatoes and avocados on top. They have children working there who don't know what they are doing. We called in advance specifically to ask if they were open and one of the children answered the phone and confirmed open but did not mention that they were busy. We get there 10-minutes later to be told there is no seating available for two, when the place is 2/3rds empty and only about eight people dining. So we were okay with take-out but then were told that it would take an hour to get take out. Had they told us on the phone, we could have still ordered take out and showed up an hour later. When I brought this to the attention of the owner, she was borderline rude. She should have at least taken our take-out order for rush preparation, under those circumstances. Instead she said that she only got busy 1/2 hour earlier, ignoring the fact that we had called 10-minutes ago. Empty tables, no proper warning, no help whatsoever. I have not had the sushi here but the Thai food is DELICIOUS. I've been to many places in NYC and California and rate this amongst the freshest and flavorful Thai food I've had. The pad see ew had fresh spinach and broccoli stems. The spicy seafood soup was so yum and had pieces of fresh salmon and shrimps in it. The atmosphere is also warm, cozy and a bit quirky. It doesn't seem to get very crowded but definitely has regular patrons. The owner is also a server and is super friendly and funny. Upon arriving, my family and I asked if we could sit at a particular table. The waitress was about to lead us to the table until a woman, probably the manager, forced us to sit somewhere else. After placing an order, we ended up receiving the wrong meal. Along with this, the same woman came up to the table when we questioned the menu and took the order away in an aggressive manner. When the correct order was served, we questioned about the other side dishes that were missing. The menu specifically states that ALL bento boxes come with shrimp tempura, but we did not receive the shrimp tempura because the vegetable bento box we ordered was a supposed "vegetarian meal" only. The menu clearly listed that this meal was supposed to come with shrimp tempura, so upon asking about the tempura the same woman repeatedly gave us an attitude and kept pointing fingers at my family and I. In addition to this, we ordered bubble tea, but ended up getting over iced tea that tasted very bland. Ultimately, we lost our appetites due to the disappointment in food and rude host, and we ended up spending our money on overpriced meals. read more

I had seen the restaurant in town and wanted to give it a try so I went to their website and ordered dinner. After waiting about 30 minutes, my food arrived and after some confusion about payment I went to unload my delivery. I noticed that they didn't deliver a side that was listed on their site as being part of the meal. So I called right away and explained about the missing side for my meal. The person on the phone went on to ask the "manager" about my complaint and he went on to say that what I was asking for wasn't part of the meal. I explained that it was stated on their website and should be honored. I asked for it to be delivered and he went on to explain to me that if I wanted the side I would have to go and pick it up. All of their different cuisines are decidedly average, and customer service was terrible. When my wife and I lived in Westwood, we were within walking distance to Tokyo Cafe and would go there once a week, if not more. Now that we no longer live in town, we will still go out of our way to eat there at least a couple times a month. The service is fantastic and extremely friendly, and the food hasn't let us down yet. My wife is the more adventurous eater of the two of us, so she will have them make her whatever rolls they want to surprise her with. There have been a few that she wasn't too into, but only because she's not a fan of spicy tuna or tuna in general. For the most part, she has been very satisfied with the special rolls. If I'm not in the mood for the sushi, the meals from the kitchen are terrific as well. They will prepare hibachi style meals (no hibachi tables, they just prepare it in the back) which rival most of the hibachi restaurants I've been to. Overall, we have always been very, very happy with the food we've eaten there. I can't recommend this place enough. The only slight problem is the available parking. The lot in the back is small (it fits about 6 cars), and there is enough parking on the street, but if you pull into the lot and it's full, it requires a 700-point turn to get back out again. read more
