Junk Chips
Jessica W.

We were a little nervous to order the junk chips knowing the flavors might not be a hit among some picky eaters at the table... but they were sooo good!! No crumbs left behind, 10/10 would recommend. Also ordered the wings, fries, and a side Caesar salad- all were average.

THIS PLACE DOES BREAKFAST!!!! $20 for the breakfast buffet, stone ground grits, cage free eggs, CRISPY bacon, great coffee! Staff was southern friendly and I would absolutely come back here. Located at the Westin.

Watermelon salad

Best dining experience ever! In town a day early for a conference. We were staying at the Sheraton and the staff sent us to Todd English for dinner. We ordered the junk pub chips, which had pulled pork and other toppings that made this a great dish. The chips are house made and come out crispy and hot. This really could be an entree it had so much on it. There were 6 of us in our party and we shared this and it was still a lot. I ordered watermelon salad and the Memphis Style Ribs. The watermelon wasn't sweet but the goat cheese and onions helped make up for this shortcoming. The ribs came with P.U.B. chips and pickled veggies (okra and pickles). I didn't care for the pickled veggies but still loved the pub chips. The ribs were fall off the bone tender! The rub was slightly spicy but good! I also liked the fact that the two bbq sauces came on the side because I'm not a fan of the Alabama white bbq sauce. Definitely a place to try when you're in Birmingham!

We ordered take out here for an outside dinner event. We asked for the Salmon medium, however, it was over cooked. I'm not sure if you can call the Mac and cheese real Mac and cheese. It had no taste and I can't even describe what I was actually eating other than noodles and some type of sauce. The Brussels were good. They just reopened due to COVID so they have a limited menu. I won't be back if I visit Birmingham again.

I visited "Todd English P.U.B" on Saturday, August 27th. I sat at the bar and was tended to by Christy. She was absolutely AMAZING! I ordered 2 Palomas and she made both exactly how I liked them. She interacted with each guest at her bar and her personality is phenomenal! I can't wait to visit this place again and hopefully sit at the bar with Christy!

this place is actually better than yelp review expected! Service is really fast! And people are friendly! Because i live in the hotel, this place is the most convenient place for me to grab food. Tried their several options, to be honest, the Alabama slammer are the best! Most of their food are fried, it means fat, but they are all tasty!

Some of the seating area. Those aren't really dart boards.

Not quite a pub, Todd English P.U.B. is more of a sports bar with a pub theme. Comfort foods and higher end stuff on the menu. Lots of TV's around that are tuned in to the sports game of the moment. And speaking of menus, they have a large one with all sorts of beers listed. I really wanted a local beer but they were out. I ended up with something from Charleston SC that was good but... I had the grilled cheese sandwich that had some strange name. Inside, three kinds of cheese, bacon and tomato. Probably not very healthy but it was tasty. A huge bucket of thin fries that were salty and spiced. They picked up ketchup quite nicely. It's a great idea that they give you a bowl of popcorn when you sit down but wow, was it salty!

Happy Hour special! $3 slider and $1 wings(2)

How many visits until you're considered a regular? We had a brief stay in Birmingham for a conference. TEP was steps away from the Sheraton. With $1 wings (2) and $3 well cocktails during Happy Hour this is the perfect conference pit stop. The service was not fast. But, the drinks are cheap and the wings were meaty. It took my colleague over 30 minutes to get his wings. I had them order mine before I got there (I learned food service was pretty slow the night before). They did give him bonus wings and they were sooooo good. My friend Jenny was a huge fan of the ranch. I thought it was pretty solid too. Even with the wait. The price is right! I definitely recommend this spot for happy hour! Drop in between 3-6pm to take full advantage of Happy Hour! They have sliders too, but the wings are the better value .

This is my vodka tonic with lime, yeah I know it's red. Waiter got it wrong but didn't wanna wait for a correction. Only one bartender he is new and there is a conference here. Came yesterday had a cosmos and a beer 23.00. Strike 2 guess I'm out not gonna chance it again. I hate giving bad review but there are times it has to be done.

this was possibly one of the worst meals I've ever had, and the service was even worse. when we were seated, the manager says "a server will be right with you", 18 minutes went by and we had not even been greeted by our server. We flagged down the manager, who did not get our server, but took our drink, salad and entree order all at the same time. five more minutes went by and then our server appeared! she also took our order. never apologized for our wait, for her absence, nothing. acted like she was superb. our salads took 15 more minutes to come..our drinks did come in the interim of our wait for the salads. my husband ordered a Ceasar salad and I ordered a strawberry arugula salad. they were fine, but nothing spectacular. For the entrees, my husband ordered steak, medium-rare and fries. I ordered steak, medium-well and substituted macaroni and cheese. when the food arrived, his steak was so over cooked, it was hard and the fries were ice cold but barely cooked. My steak was unevenly cooked, and at about a medium temperature. It took quite awhile (at least 10 minutes) for the server to return. I conceded to eat the steak he had been brought bc then at least it was just one steak to have to be fixed. When the server finally came to our table, we explained it to her. she took the plate. about 15 minutes went by. While we were waiting, my husband went to ask who the manager was, as we did not know at this point. the hostess pointed out the managers, who we now realized had been the one who took our order, as we had not been informed of that from the outset. fine, no big deal. as my husband was finding out about managers, the manager brought the steak to the table, dropped it on the table and took off without staying to see if it was cooked probably, or even to my husband's liking. The steak was RAW. not rare. RAW. It had been barely seared on the outside and was still blue (and cold) on the inside. the worst part about all of this poor cookery is that they serve the steaks SLICED! which means they KNEW it was poorly cooked the first time AND that it was raw this time. They sliced it, slid it onto a new plate and slopped some chimichurri on top. Honestly, the chimichurri was the best part of the whole meal. It actually tasted good. Let me get back to the macaroni and cheese. it was nasty. the pasta was overcooked, and the sauce was not only broken/grainy but it had been scorched/burnt. i tried eating it, but it was inedible. So while his steak sat there, still raw, no one and I mean no one came to the table. Another 10 minutes went by. I asked thr hostess if she'd send a manager to our table. she also seemed irritated at the servers, etc. A different manager came to the table and asked what was wrong, and when we showed him the steak, he asked "what can I do to fix this?", which at first was a valiant effort. but at this point, was too-little-too-late. my husband said, honestly nothing. this is the first date night we've had in quite awhile bc of our busy schedules and there were a number of options in the vicinity but we chose here. so the manager says, well,, you won't have to pay for this. my husband said no, we just want to pay for what we ate and our drinks. so the manager leaves the table. we think to get our check. naynay another 10 minutes goes by. I am fuming by this point. we just want to pay and leave. our server comes to the table and actually asks if we like the food! she had no clue what had happened. the manager had not even told her! We just say no. and tell her what we'd like to pay for. she leaves. several more minutes go by. ANOTHER manager comes over and asks if my husband would like a box to take his RAW steak home. at this point I've had enough and I say, you're the 3rd person we've had to explain this terrible food and service to. we just want the check, for the love. it took another 20 minutes to finally get our check and get out of there. In addition to all of this, the table beside us was having similar "bad service" issues. to the point that they were walking out the door when their food finally arrived, and with no apologies or explanations. I might excuse many things, had the restaurant been packed full and extremely busy, but it was not. there were empty tables all over the restaurant. Now, I have said all of this because I am a chef. I worked in fine dining for many years. I was a line cook, sous chef, a kitchen manager, running the pass/expediting food. I am a big Todd English fan, and I wanted to experience his pub-style restaurant. But as a chef, I can say, with absolute confidence - people come for the food; they come BACK for the service. The food here was terrible at best, and the service, from the moment we sat down, was the worst I've experienced in a long time. Not only will I never go back, I will tell everyone who will listen about this terrible restaurant.

I ordered the seafood pasta, and you could immediately tell the pasta was homemade. It was fresh, perfectly cooked, and the seafood was beautifully prepared. My daughter had the spaghetti, and my husband ordered the Waldorf salad, which was just as thoughtfully put together. Our waitress also recommended the hummus and house pickles, and I'm so glad we listened. Both were fresh, unique, and the perfect way to start the meal. From the food to the service, everything felt polished without being pretentious. It was one of those meals where every dish was executed with care and attention to detail. Overall, The Essential was such a pleasant surprise and proof that you can find five star dining experiences in the most unexpected places. The interior has a nostalgic, warm vibe and would be a great setting for a date night. Our server was awesome! He was friendly, attentive, and recommended some great food and drink options. I also really enjoyed the open-kitchen concept, as I always like being able to see the food being prepared. My only concern was with a couple of things I noticed in the kitchen. Since the kitchen is completely open and visible to guests, I think extra attention should be given to sanitation and overall presentation. I noticed one of the cooks drinking while preparing food, and another wiped his nose with his arm while working. Although he didn't use his hand, it still left me feeling a little uneasy. When guests can see directly into the kitchen, those small details really matter. Aside from that, we enjoyed our experience, and I do think this is a place worth trying at least once. The atmosphere, service, and recommendations from our server were definitely highlights of our visit.

The minute we walked in and heard the live music, we knew we were going to have a good time. The food did not disappoint. My mom and daughter both had the pasta--one swapped the crawfish for chicken and the other for shrimp--and both versions were delicious. Hubby had the steak and eggs, and the one bite he was willing to spare was surprisingly delicious too! I went with the fried green tomatoes and Brussels sprouts because I already knew I'd be helping myself to some pasta from their plates. We finished it all off with banana pudding and key lime pie, and both were the perfect ending. Great food, live music, good vibes, friendly server and a fun stop on the road home. There was a guy performing live there, and the music was not so overpowering that you were unable to talk across the table. Very pleasant. Service was slow but it appeared they were understaffed. Order bowl of Gumbo for appetizers. We went on and provided our entree orders at that time as well. We waited about 25-30 minutes a different person brought out our order. I ask the server to take the gumbo back, as we had order that as an appetizer. In a few minutes our original server brought the gumbo back to our table. I told her we had ordered that as an appetizers, the server apologized and said it had gotten "Lost in the kitchen, keep it, I'll take care of it". About the food, wife ordered salad with chicken. The salad had 4 large fried chicken tenders on it. I order the sirloin tips over rice. Overall tasty, but gravy was a little salty. Dish included some green beans as well which were tasty. Overall experience was ok, service a little slow which I don't understand with the lower population in the dining room. When I got the check, the gumbo was still on the ticket. Not sure what "I'll take care of it " meant, not what I expected. I paid for it without saying anything else. Actually it was pretty good gumbo. Paid the bill, left a good tip, as the server seemed to be running her legs off. Going back? Probably so, but it'll be a while till I do.

High ceilings and exposed brick are a few of the ways to my heart. If you've seen a post about this place, you've probably seen a picture of the crackly round, artistic dish and wondered what it was. There are dumplings on the underside of it and you break each one off of the crackly part to enjoy. We did enjoy these but I would've loved a soy sauce to dip them in. They came with chili crunch, peanuts, and green onions but I wanted an actual sauce. They were very standard tasting dumplings and there was nothing extraordinary about them unfortunately. As always, we'd looked at the menu beforehand and decided what we wanted. It does state on their website that their menus can change due to freshness and availability. But we'd both decided on an app and entree we wanted only to get there and have none of them on the menu. I do appreciate a rotating menu to accommodate local items, but I would also love for those to be updated on a regular basis. So after rerouting, we decided on the chicken skewers as another app with the dumplings. These were chargrilled, flavorful, and had a nice crust on them. I got shrimp fried rice and Julia got spicy beef noodles. It was fine but I wish the shrimp wouldn't have been cut up. It felt like they chopped them up in order to not put as many in the dish. At $25 for this, I'd like whole shrimp please. There were a few pieces of raw spinach with pepper on the top. I would've loved a sauce of some kind. I would've preferred shrimp hibachi with fried rice from a Japanese place that included vegetables and sauces. This was not *bad* there was just SO much room for improvement. We both agreed that nothing was awful, but for these prices and the hype, we expected more. Our waitress was super friendly. Bonus points because they had match boxes at the host stand! There was a paid parking lot diagonal from the restaurant, so we had to walk through an intersection to get there. There are some spots up front if you can snag one. Overall, we enjoyed our time here but won't be sprinting back.

Wooden City is located off Morris Avenue in a shared row of older buildings. There's a private parking lot behind the building, and you can have your parking ticket validated at the restaurant. The location and vibe on Morris Avenue are really neat and uniquely Birmingham. It's a great addition to the city's dining scene. Our party of four started with drinks and shared three appetizers: the Bread and Butter, Heirloom Tomatoes, and Steak Tartare. My favorite was the Bread and Butter. It's house-made focaccia served with a sun-dried tomato spread and an oil dipping sauce. The bread was amazing. For my entrée, I ordered the Peel-and-Eat Shrimp from the appetizer menu. It was fabulous--a generous portion of large shrimp that were perfectly seasoned and grilled. For dessert, we shared the Chocolate Mousse and Blueberry/Blackberry Crisp. The crisp was my favorite. It was served hot with a scoop of vanilla ice cream--an excellent way to finish the meal. While Wooden City doesn't have a large menu, everything we tried was very well done. I definitely recommend giving it a try, but don't be in a hurry. The service was a little slow during our visit.

These were pretty good and the heat gradually snuck up on you as you ate them. I don't know if it was because the heat was more intense as you worked your way towards the stem or just a gradual burn. Either way, these were good and worth the heartburn later. The thick focaccia helped with the burn a little. Speaking of heartburn, the pepperoni pizza may have contributed a bit to that too, but again, totally worth it. The cup-and-char pepperoni was charred nicely as were the edges and bottom! I love a nice bottom! These were easy to share between two of us. Service was amazing from the bartender to the waiter to the uber driver (who didn't really count, but nice job, man). We felt welcomed and I can see why the place was crowded on a Tuesday evening.
