After two injections and several months of physical therapy, we finally decided that I needed surgery to fix it. I was seeing him in Newport Beach, but I was able to choose a hospital in Long Beach that was closer to me. Dr Ameri is very kind and genuinely cares about his patients.

If you care about your health and well being, do not come to a place that practices mill medicine,…read morecontrary to the standard of care. Multiple rushed and poor experiences here with several physicians. Most of your face time here is with physician assistants. When a doctor experiences significant tactile resistance during an injection and openly admits a lesion isn't behaving like a typical cyst, shifting to a passive "wait-and-see" approach without looking at your historical imaging is simply a contradiction in clinical logic. Calling that out isn't about being confrontational; it is about recognizing that your intuition was right, your questions are valid. Dr. Billings operates a medical mill. I came to see Dr Billings (incidentally CEO of Pasadena Orthopedics) for a thumb lesion xrayed 5 years ago and never biopsied. She injected my thumb without so much as objectively establishing if the lesion was solid or cystic. She told me with utmost confidence that I have a cyst. She suddenly revised her diagnosis while in the midst of obviously struggling to inject the lesion with steroids. She wanted to move fast because volume means Benjamins $. I walked in with little to no pain, and walked out unable to fully flex or extend my thumb without pain. The office then gave me the run around for a simple imaging request after the pain progressively worsened and insinuated that the response to my injection in 6 weeks is "diagnostic." No rationale was offered. Billings tried to pivot with, "let's see if we get a treatment response." Truth is, she realized unnecessary needle trauma would have to be healed from forcefully trying to inject steroids (liquid) in something with the density of an eraser (before imaging could become meaningful). I offered to show them prior imaging, but they were too busy churning out patients. I came here for diagnostic clarity, not to sit around for 2 hours and be provided substandard care. The audacity of trying to pass it off as, "let's wait to see if the treatment responds" (damn well knowing it's not behaving like a cyst and forcing fluid in a solid mass in a patient's thumb). Come on now.

He is the sweetest! Whenever he notices that I'm uncomfortable, he checks in on me and starts a conversation to help distract me and make the procedure a little easier. Those small acts of kindness make a huge difference. Overall, every visit has been smooth, and I've always felt well taken care of. I'm very grateful that my pain management doctor referred me to Dr. Myers and the team at Risser Orthopedic. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for knowledgeable, compassionate care.

I performed extensive research on the procedure as well as on surgeons before making an appointment with him, and had already consulted with quite a few, but I knew as soon as I met him that he was going to be my doctor. Not only did he have an outstanding reputation from multiple sources he was very empathetic, which I have found is fairly unusual for an orthopedic surgeon. If you are considering a joint replacement it's crucial that you do your due diligence on the procedure, surgeons, and the hospital at which it will be performed. All of this DOES make a difference and there are numerous resources on the web that can help you - review sites like Healthgrades, Pro Publica research, World News & Report hospital rankings, etc. The information found on the web can be a good starting point before setting up appointments. Dr. Dietrick was already at the top of my list but I was further pleased to know that he is affiliated with Huntington Memorial in Pasadena, which is a great facility. If you're in pain and your life is not your own, there's no reason to put off a joint replacement. With an excellent surgeon like Dr. Dietrick the process is not as difficult as you might imagine and your quality of life will change dramatically for the better. Lastly, I can't emphasize enough the importance of finding a good physical therapist. A surgery that goes well can totally be un-done by bad physical therapy. After much trial and error I found a great local therapist but meet surgical patients there all the time who have had bad PT and are only now finding relief. Look into this before surgery!
