Something wasn't right when I walked in. This place has that 90s salon feel to it. It felt dated. But Floyds was booked for the night, and I wanted a haircut, so I gave it a shot. Big mistake. First, the woman (Andrea) sprayed my hair with water, resulting in it dripping all down my face, my ears, and my back. Then, she was painfully slow with her buzzer, and I questioned (aloud) how long she has worked there for (2 years), and I questioned (in my head) whether she had ever given a buzz cut before. The front of my haircut (a 3 on sides and back, blended to a 5 up top, using scissors to shorten the front) was unevenly cut on the left and right side of my face. When I questioned this, she said it's my uneven hairline. Um, no, it's your bad technique. Finally, her clippers kept nicking my neck, resulting in a burning sensation. She kept using them, even though I told her they burned. I now have red marks on the back of my neck (adding a photo so you can see). Then, I was charged at a discount. I appreciate the gesture, but this should have been free. I want my money back. I was also given a customer loyalty card. Did she really think I was coming back after this experience?? Don't go here. I bought a Groupon for full highlights, a wash, haircut and blowdry for $95 which is decent considering that at full price the same services would run upwards of $200 or so at most places. I made an appointment earlier this week for Saturday at 12pm with Bridget, who in past reviews seems like a genius with hair. I strolled in around 11:55am to find no one in the salon. I probably waited another 5 to 10 min until Bridget rolled in. She kept grumbling as to why "the other girl" didn't show up to do my hair. I was a bit confused, because I thought my appointment was her to begin with? But she was happy to do my hair anyways and immediately offered me coffee and cookies :) She recommend that I add in some low lights for $20 extra so the repeated highlights wouldn't make my hair too light and unnatural-looking. I took her up on her recommendation and WOW what a difference! It made the highlights blend in much better with my natural coloring. She also paid attention to not take off length, but rather shape up my layers as I requested. She was also willing to work around small requests such as extra trimming around my bangs without a problem. I asked if she offered a lock in price because the big disappointment with groupon sometimes is that you get a great job done, but the businesses then request that you pay full price next time which I can't do on a student budget :( we bonded so well during my appointment with her, ahe she was more than happy to offer me a locked in rate for future appointments! I will DEFINITELY be back. The only reason I take a star off is due to past reviews detailing horror stories with scheduling, and she was a tiny bit late for my appointment in combination with the confusion between who was going to do my hair. A tip is to make an appointment on a day where you have loads of time to kill in the case that a scheduling mishap does happen. Otherwise, you will leave with amazing hair :) read more

I went here to get a hair cut a while back and Bridget was the hairdresser that helped me with the service. She had good communication in regarding the setting up of the appointment and even though her arm was in some pain during the appointment, she still did a good job with the hair cut as well as the highlights. She paid good attention to the details especially on the highlights. The timing of the appointment was also very accurate to the amount of time she originally predicted for the hair cut and the highlights. read more

I went into this place today with a Groupon for a wash cut and blowdry. I really like my cut; Andrea did a great job and was very personable. The only thing was, I showed up a little before noon for my noon appt, and the staff hadn't even gotten in yet. One of the ladies working at the dry cleaner (that shares a space with the salon) gave me the owner's phone number to call and see where she was. I would maybe understand if I was a walk-in, but if you know you have an appt for a certain time it's pretty unprofessional to show up late. All in all, I'd go back with another Groupon - if I was paying full price I'd probably go elsewhere. read more

i've been here twice, and both times had a wonderful experience. First time Andria gave me half-head highlights, cut, and straightened my very curly hair. I was delighted with every aspect of this: she was generous with highlights, covering all important areas that ever show, and alternated darker and lighter highlights as I had requested.... the cut was perfect for my curls that need de-bulking.... and my hair was super-straight without being totally fried by the irons the way some salons will do it. Second time Brigitte gave me half-head highlights and a cut. I was late, and couldn't stay for a blow-dry, so she gave me some extra highlights to make up for it. Brigitte was incredibly friendly and didn't make me feel bad for being late. I was delighted with the highlights (a bit darker than Andria's) and the cut was great. it's so hard to find a salon that can cope with my curls and do highlights the way I like them.... all while being very affordable. i'm thrilled to have discovered Tocco Classico, and won't be going anywhere else. read more

I made a 2 pm appt over the phone detailing what I wanted done and that I had purchased a Groupon. I was told it would be no problem, and when I asked who would be my stylist, I was told Andrea or Bridget, and that I would find out when I got there. Odd, but OK. A week later I walked in and was greeted with unswept floors and a run-down salon ripped from 1984. There was one woman working on two customers (she has dark red hair and an Italian accent). She looked confused, but told me to sit and "wait for the other girl". After waiting ten minutes and being ignored, I finally interrupted her to ask who would be working with me. She said "Honey, I have two customers and the Andrea is out sick. That's who was going to cut your hair". At this point, I was very confused as to why she didn't tell me this initially and why I wasn't called about a cancellation. When I asked why I had to come down to the salon and wait to be told this, she said "A girl is sick, what do you want?". For some unearthly reason I remained friendly and even agreed to wait an hour and a half and come back (I really needed my hair cut that day!). Finally, I returned and she said "Hon, I am behind. I'll be ready for you at six." She requested that I wait THREE MORE hours! At this point, I beyond exasperated. When I told her that it was ridiculous to ask a client to wait like this, she said "This woman is having her wedding tomorrow! You can't wait for a woman who is getting married?! Andrea is sick and didn't cancel. You never get sick and not show up?" At this point, the client being worked on said, "I'm sorry, now I feel like this is my fault. My color didn't turn out correctly and needed to be redone". I told the stylist that , no, I would never, ever no-show to something for work with no call, and that it was not the current client's fault because she had made an appointment as well. I then said that I suspected due to her initial confusion that she had not written down my appointment when I spoke to her over then phone. She said she did. I then referenced the open appointment book and noted that I was nowhere in it. She claimed that she had written somewhere "in her purse" (?) All I know is that this place is very unprofessional overall. Either Andrea no-shows for clients, and her boss doesn't care, or the woman who takes down appointments didn't ever bother writing it down and thought it was rational to keep me on call from 2-6pm. I am inclined to believe the latter since I saw her taking appointments as she cradled the phone with her face and worked on her client's hair at the same time. She told me to take it up with Groupon, so all I got out of the transaction was a Groupon voucher for "unprofessional conduct". Not what I was looking for. read more

When I first moved to Massachusetts, I lived around the corner from this salon and would come here to get my hair done. Four years later, I still come to see Bridget to get my hair done. If I get my hair done anywhere else, it's usually a complete disaster. Bridget's pretty adept at fixing my hair when it starts to look like a demilitarized zone. I recently used a Groupon to get my hair washed & cut by Andrea. She was great -- friendly, gentle, and skilled. I'm very happy with the haircut. Not only that but the service was quick and cheerful. From when I called to make the appointment to the time I walked out the door, I felt taken care of. I didn't have to wait long for an appointment, whereas other salons sometimes take weeks. The owner (unfortunately I did not get her name - maybe it's Bridget who others have mentioned in reviews) was very nice and offered me tea/coffee while I waited (for about 2 minutes). This is a great neighborhood find. It is NOT a pretentious place but we Canterbridgians prefer this as shown by the number of Bridgett's return clients. Bridgett is a wonderful hair colorist- she gets it just right every time. I have spent big bucks at fancy salons only to return to Bridgett over and over again. I can count on a really good haircut and a person who really listens. By the way, it is clear to me that whoever wrote the negative reviews is the same person and someone who has an ax to grind. Perhaps a disgruntled past employee. But from the way I see it, Tocco Classico is indeed a hidden gem and a little piece of the old country: the neighborhood people always stop by to stay hello. If I could give a rating lower than 1 star, I would. I bought a massage deal for their location from Groupon. This place is AWFUL and the deal was sold under wrong pretext. I have had a lot of massages in my life and this was hands down the worst experience. There is a whole slew of reasons I can give: 1) It was advertised as $45 for a service worth $90 (60 min massage). As soon as I walked in, there was a big sign stating that all 60 min massages are for $55. 2) It is a hair salon with a small, box type, make-shift room for massage that was at best, creepy. It was right in the middle of the hair salon and I could hear all the chatter outside, blaring music and NO privacy. At one point, while I was under the sheet without any clothes, the masseuse opened the door and went outside and left he door wide open!!!! 3) The masseuse (Jennifer) is totally unqualified - she had no clue what she was doing and I was more sore afterwards than before. She was completely unprofessional. She starts off the massage by stating "my hands are going to be cold to begin with but i promise they'll warm up!" after which she places ice cold hands on my bare, warm back. 4) I had to instruct her 3/4 times that she needs to stay away from a certain part of my body because whatever she was doing was causing pain (which I had none of before coming there). Ladies! I've enjoyed coming here getting my hair cut by Brigitte. She always makes me feel at home right when I walk in. If I come in with a photo for a style, we talk about what would work for my hair. She's willing to do whatever you want, and is also (thank goodness) willing to try out a tamer version of what you want and go more extreme if you're comfortable. I've always left very happy with the result of the cut. Brigitte is wonderful and she's refreshingly affordable compared to the other wacky places on mass ave! Hair cutting in Cambridge can be very hit or miss, which is why I thought I'd go with a chain like Floyd's, but I've consistently returned to Tocco Classico with great satisfaction. This is the kind of place that attracts a loyal, local customer base. In my experience, Andréa has done an excellent job cutting my hair and I've received a good many compliments thanks to her skill. More generally, prices are fair (and include "touch-ups"), the atmosphere feels a little dated, service is more personal than most places, and the people are very kind. I bring pictures in and she gets it perfect every time, or I can describe what I want and again she gets it right. I go here for a cut and color every time. Bridget is amazing! This was my first haircut here and now I will be coming to Bridget for all my haircuts! The hair stylist I have been going to for awhile whose cuts I loved moved out of the area so I needed a new hair stylist. I recently tried a different salon using a groupon and had been given the most blah haircut (and won't be going back to that salon). I stopped into this salon and asked for ideas on how to fix my blah haircut for the next time I needed a cut in the future. Bridget really looked at my hair and gave me some terrific ideas for future cuts, agreed that my haircut didn't hang together as a cut (wispy in front and yet just hung there and didn't look right and long in the back with a really odd wierd shape to it) and offered to fix my current cut for free( but of course generous offer though it was I didn't want to do that) so I made an appointment to come back in the hopes she could salvage my cut. Bridget is absolutely wonderful! She has over 30 years of experience and actually knew how to cut my hair so that a blah haircut where the best compliment was that it looked like I'm growing it out, or where no one even noticed I had a style, turned into multiple compliments and a cut that's truly fun and edgy with shape and definition. Bridget is like the hair whisperer..she knows how to work with baby fine absolutely straight hair and has a great sense for what would be perfect for your face. I absolutely love my new haircut. Plus she has great ideas for what to do next once it grows a bit so we have a plan for 10 weeks from now. The salon atmosphere is like Cheers where everyone knows your name and everyone chats with each other. She asks if you would like coffee or tea or something else and cookies. She took me on time and it's a relaxing fun lively place where it's down to earth and has a neighborhood feel, and where when you leave you feel like you truly had great conversations with everyone. I love being able to write this review.. it's so hard to find a great hair stylist so I had to share my experience. I think haircuts are $45 and a color, cut and blowdry is $90. Horrible experience! I bought a groupon for highlights, and she not only kept charging me extras for long hair (my hair is just shoulder length) and extra foils (um, isn't that the point of paying for full highlights?), she took a long time and did two other haircuts while I was still waiting for a color check. Inevitably, my highlights ended up bleeding on to each other, and became a brassy copper color, rather than the light brown I requested. Finally, when checking me out and having me pay all the extras, she asked for my groupon again, which I already provided a print out of. She denied that she received it, so I pulled it up on my phone. Then, she clicked 'redeemed' on my phone, and said "uhoh, I think you redeemed this already". I thought I was being punked, and told her she just clicked redeemed in front of me, and that I obviously have never been there before. I even found the paper copy on her desk and showed it to her. It was a nightmare, and she was unorganized and very unprofessional. I left the salon in near tears, and then went to the local CVS to buy an in-home hair color to cover up my horrible highlights. I would never recommend this place, as this experience has turned me off hair color groupons forever! read more

I love this place. Bridget is one of those hairdressers that is 90 personal stylist and 10 percent therapist. You look and feel so great coming out of her shop!. It is actually fun to stick around and have her delicious coffee and cookies to watch her transform other people from ducklings to swans in just an hour. She is masterful at highlights and color, choreographing a perfect combination of light and precision cut. I moved to Cambridge in 2012 from the West Coast and dreaded the process of finding a new hair stylist--my hair is curly, wiry and really hard to cut. I have driven two hours in the past to follow stylists who could cut it without making me look like a clown. Bridget is an artist at finding a flattering look for all different hairstyles. I just goggle online to find the salon number and saw some negative reviews from people that mostly seemed to be complaining about Andrea, a stylist that hasn't worked there for years. Also they used to share their restroom with the dry cleaner adjacent which they don't anymore. The salon is exquisitely decorated and immaculate--smells like the greatest coffee in the world. Bridget and her assistant bend over backward to fit you in, and while she is sometimes juggling two clients at the same time--(someone in the chair, someone under the dryer) she is ALWAYS on time. They even feed your meter at their own expense and once even moved my car to a free space near the salon they knew about. Really sweet little place. read more

I found this place on groupon and couldn't believe what a great deal it was. Bridget the owner talked me into highlights to cover my gray hair. I had been dying it myself to its original dark and had no idea how 'Elvira like' and goth I had started to look since one-process color is so flat and destroys all of your natural highlights. All these people have been telling me I should have done it many years before, including my Dad who I never thought noticed anything about my appearance! My next door neighbor who I had never spoken to before called out the window how much he liked my 'new' hair. I guess we never know what we really look like til we get that kind of makeover and everyone loves it. I bought a voucher off weforia.com to get a massage here. I called to make an appointment and they said they are no longer accepting those, the person who did it has left. They gave me his phone number to contact him (first sketchy thing). I called them and they said they no longer do that line of work, they crushed all the bones in their left hand (second sketchy thing). Clearly someone here is a liar and it seems as though there is some sort of lingering problem between the two parties. While it seems like they only participate in doing hair styling at this point they clearly are not averse to shady practices. Do NOT BUY THE MASSAGE GROUPON here. Under any circumstances. The 'massage room' is curtained off from the hairdressing salon, and there is loud radio music turned to 'relaxing music' blaring from the speakers. The hairdressers and customers are very audible, and the hairdryers going off every few seconds is very distracting. The masseuse did not ask me what I was looking for, and every time I asked her to use more pressure she did not respond. She was clearly very inexperienced-- the massage was basically her rubbing very cloying lotion on my back in circles. She was actually injuring my left shoulder more. I left within 10 minutes, and am demanding a refund from Groupon. Miserable experience. I still feel like I need to take a shower, the scent of the lotion is just awful. read more

Great haircut! I absolutely hate getting my hair cut and brigitte did an excellent job. I refuse to pay for the frills of a snooty salon, so this was perfect. Low-key, local, and a great price. I was able I make an appointment the same day. She listened to what I wanted and I got exactly that! And, she didn't try to push products on me that I didn't need. I got my hair done here a couple of months ago and finally remembered that I really wanted to write a review. I bought a groupon for a highlights and haircut package and loved my whole experience there. I did, however, have to pay extra to get additional highlights. It is a very small salon and the looks are a bit deceiving; the experience is wonderful and my highlights/hair cut were fantastic, I would even dare say even better than my hair has looked after getting it done at fancy salons on newbury and downtown. Brigitte did my hair and did a great job. Not to mention she was so kind, sweet, and clearly very hard-working. This review is for the massage service only. I bought one of those daily deal coupons recently for a 90 minute massage (it was only $29) figuring that even if this was going to be a below average massage it would be hard pressed to not be worth the price. This placed managed to prove me wrong. When you walk in the store front is essentially half laundromat (I think) on the right side and half hair salon on the other. I was told by the lady doing somebody's hair that the massage room was in the back and to go in and get ready. Well, the massage room is about the size of a closet and barely big enough to fit a regular sized massage table. It was loud in there and all the conversation in the salon could easily be heard. Not exactly a relaxing atmosphere. The masseuse was questionable at best...he just seemed like a gross dude, was sniffling the whole time (get your hands off me if you're sick) and stopping the massage for 30 seconds at a time to answer texts. Even with all of these misgivings I probably wouldn't be here to complain if the massage itself was still good, but it was terrible and this guy has no idea what he's doing. I've gotten dozens of massages before and this is at the bottom of the totem pole for me. I would never go back to this place, and with all the other massage options in the area it should be avoided at all costs. read more

I bought a YipIt Boston deal for this salon. The deal was for a Moroccan conditioning treatment and a wash, cut and blow-dry. As soon as I arrived at the salon, I was surprised to see that the salon shares a space with a dry-cleaning business. I later learned that the salon owner is also the owner of the dry-cleaning business. My thought is that the owner should be focused on building the best salon or dry-cleaning business, not both. When you're trying to do too much, neither is as successful as it could be. I also agree with one of the previous reviewers that the decor is dated. It just doesn't seem like a vibrant, modern salon where you'd expect to walk out with a cut you'd love. I gave the stylist (Andrea) an opportunity to prove me wrong despite my observations. She told me that my hair looked really dry, which may have been true, but it was the way she said it that I thought was rude. The Moroccan conditioning treatment was a waste. My hair wasn't any softer afterwards. I may as well have used my own conditioner. Next, she moved onto the haircut, which was interrupted by a woman dropping off her dry-cleaning (ridiculous). This haircut was the worst haircut I've ever had in my life! She was painfully slow and I got the feeling I was her first client ever! She seemed afraid of the scissors. I sat in the chair dying for the whole thing to be over. The end result was a horrible conditioning treatment, haircut and blow-dry. So much so that I had to wash and blow-dry my hair again before going out later that night. Before I left, I was charged an extra $15 because supposedly my hair was below my shoulders (maybe an inch!) and of course that was in the fine print of the YipIt deal (joke). A week ago I decided I was finally going to chop off my hair and donate it to locks of love. Since my mom is a hair dresser and I've always had long hair, I'm used to getting approximately 2 hair cuts per year and pretty much always by my mom (who is fantastic but lives in NY) So I searched Groupon and basically was looking for a place that would take me that day since I didn't want to chicken out. I called and Bridget said she could take me that afternoon which was great! Not only was she super sweet and helpful but she kept insisting that I have cookies or coffee- gotta love those Italians always trying to make you eat. Anyway, she did a fantastic job of cutting 8 inches off my hair and giving me an awesome cute cut. She really knew how to frame my face and make it work for me and I've been getting literally hundreds of compliments. LOVE it and I will definitely be going back when I'm ready for a trim :) read more
