The lake is stocked every year with trout and there are plenty of bass, crappies, and pan fish as well. I think boat rentals are about $20/hr. There are plenty of trails but they aren't maintained that well which is actually how I like it. Gives you somewhat of a challenge. Alcohol isn't allowed in PA state parks but if you need to wet your whistle, The Dutchman Tavern is right on Rt. 507 of you go north and Hammerjax Bar and Grill is on the end of Phillps Road about 1 mile from the park.

So I've picked up hiking the last few years because not only is it great exercise and you get to enjoy awesome views but it's free, unless you count the cost of getting there. My first attempt at hiking here was denied several weeks ago when I came on a Sunday at 10am, huge mistake! Because of the pandemic, only the Kittatinny Point Visitor Center lot is open, and by this time on a weekend the parking lot was packed to the gills. So do yourself a favor and either avoid coming here late, or not come at all on a weekend, otherwise the park ranger will turn you away if the lot is full. Today I got here at 9am. Score!!! Only a half-dozen cars were parked here on this Monday morning. Follow the signs to the beginning of the red dot trail, which is located on the west side of Route 80, to begin this challenging hike. There are other trails at Mount Tammany but the red-blue trail seems to most popular. Be warned, the trail is quite steep and will involve a lot of rock scrambles. I will admit my teenage son was flying up the mountain while I was taking it slow and gasping for air, haha! So if you haven't twisted an ankle or got bit by a rattlesnake or copperhead - yes, there is a signpost warning about the snakes, but I didn't see any - you will come upon two overlooks with beautiful views of Mt. Minsi and the Delaware Water Gap. The first viewpoint is about three-quarters of the way up the red trail and the other one is at the summit. You should definitely scramble down the rocks a bit if you're comfortable with it to get much better vistas. After taking in the views and catching your breath you will continue along the red dot trail which will connect you with the blue dot trail. Follow the blue trail to descend the mountain. While not as steep coming down, there are still lots of loose rocks that you need to be wary of. As you near the end of your hike on the blue dot trail, you are rewarded once again with a beautiful little waterfall. Hikers were wading in the stream here to cool off, but I took a pass. Once you've finished taking your pictures here, cross the bridge and continue on the white trail, which is actually part of the Appalachian Trail, and you will end up back at the beginning of the red dot trail where you began. You can now go back under the underpass to head back to your car at the visitor center.

When I was just a young tot, we used to go on school field trips to this place. It was legendary!…read more They had big slides, a huge tower fort, and all the swings you could shake a stick at. Were they completely safe? Hell no, but we had more fun than a dog in a bone factory at that park. Sure I came home with a few inch-long splinters in my bum, but Uncle Chester always coaxed them out with a little baby oil, some rubber gloves, and a few feathers. Hell, even my daughters grew up going to that park. They had softball games twice a week on their fields. As a father and spectator, I got ejected from my first game at their upper field. Argued balls and strikes till I was blue in the face. The sad thing was that it was still batting practice and the game hadn't started. Oh well, that's just the kind of fella I am. I had a lot of firsts at that park...my first field trip, my first kiss, my first kiss with a girl, first slap across the face...I could go on and on. Well, I was up here at the end of the season this past September, and while there are still some things from my childhood that remain, quite a few things have changed. Gone are the big slide and wooden fort I used to get stuck in while climbing up; they have been replaced with big, plastic, Ronald McDonald looking Fisher-Price crap. Nothing even remotely dangerous remains, it's all replaced by safe, conservative stuff (and not the good kinda conservative). I understand the struggle to keep kids safe but pretty soon it's gonna be a bunch of bean bag chairs and hula hoops, c'mon let the kids be kids. Schools still have nurses right? Oh and let me be clear. This park is now obnoxious about their no dog policy. Every free piece of real estate is plastered with a NO DOGS ALLOWED sign. My wife even wore her favorite Big Dogs branded t-shirt and was asked to leave several times. The athletic fields themselves were in great shape and I must commend the park staff for the great mowjobs. They looked fantastic! Although I must say the tennis courts have seen better days, the amount of cracks, dead spots, and holes reminded me of a PennDOT job. Also, what's with all the mounds of dirt and gravel towards the upper end? I thought I had stumbled into the back entrance of the Eureka Stone Quarry in Snydersville. On the other hand, If I was still a kid those would probably have been the funnest thing there to play on. I give it 3 stars just for the fond memories.
