I have no idea why Toby Carvery at Bexleyheath is so popular. It's a bog standard pub roast dinner, with the only difference being that the vegetables are served buffet style so you can help yourself after being served a piece of meat by the cook behind the counter. On the Sunday I visited, the place was packed solid at 2:30pm. After being informed that there would be a 45 minute wait for a table of two (despite empty tables being clearly visible in the restaurant) I had to wait at the bar for almost 10 minutes to be served. There was no where to sit whilst waiting for a table, so the only option was to stand in a walkway drink in hand, waiting with the other hungry customers and watching people walk past with plates of food. Did I mention the food is served in one corner of the restaurant, so you have to walk through crowds of people with your plate back to your table? After 45 minutes of waiting, we were seated and told how food service works (ask for your meat then help yourself to the vegetables), then joined the snaking queue waiting for a plate of food, reminiscent of orphans waiting for their gruel. If you want a second helping of vegetables, you have to endure the same procedure again. I wouldn't go to Toby Carvery again - if I wanted a good value roast I'd rather go to a JD Weatherspoons or any other pub.

Yum! My husband and I came here for dinner tonight as our first stop in London. After spending all…read moreday traveling, we were thrilled with the drink selection. The Merlot was delicious! We ordered onion rings to start, the breading on them was amazing! It was light and crispy as opposed to being heavy and greasy like a lot of onion rings. I also loved the curry ketchup that came with them. I'm not generally a curry fan, but it definitely worked with this dish. My husband got fish and chips. The fish was perfectly fried and the tarter sauce was obviously house made because it tasted very fresh and lemony. The chips were fine, but unremarkable in my opinion. For my meal, I ordered pumpkin walnut gnocchi. It was delicious! Just enough pumpkin without being overpowering. There was quite a bit of kale (I think it was kale, the menu didn't say) that came with the dish. It was very good, but probably could have been dialed back a little. The service was friendly and prompt. Definitely a great way to start our London vacation!

However when you walk in you are transported back to the 1970s, the decor is very reminiscent of that era. It has lots of artexing inside and little wooden cubby holes with seat in that are quite cosy. The staff are always friendly, it does quite often seem to be male dominated and it is often busy and lively in here and they regularly have entertainment at weekends which is great! There is plenty of seating outside both to the front and to the back of the pub. The view out the front is not so great though as it is of the main road. The food is average but at the moment they are doing a special offer of main courses for £2! Drink prices are slightly below average. A nice pub where you always feel welcome.

It is very popular with the local residents and the menu is reasonably varied. I visited yesterday with a fairly large group and the £2.00 meal menu is still going strong, and because there were so many of us we even got a waitress service for the drinks, even though we had not booked. For cost and friendliness you can't knock this place. The gents toilet is a little tight for wheelchair access but I guess the layout of the place makes it difficult to improve.
