I stumbled into Toad Hall while my wife was shopping in SoHo, and what a delight. The bartender was super personable and nice. Others at the bar were as well. Great pour of beer, a bowl of pub mix, and kind of blue on the airwaves. It started to snow while we were there and it was great to chat with a local about how the weather would affect the city. My wife ended up joining me for a couple of beers. So nice and friendly we stayed longer than intended. read more

I spent about 5 hours here with my best friend last Friday. It's small, unassuming and there are toad statues everywhere. We plopped down at the bar and just kept the drinks coming...and coming...and coming. It's divey, but has such a warm feel to it. It wasn't crowded either. We had about 8 rounds of drinks and my tab came to $34. ....I'm not complaining? The one negative is the bathrooms. They're in the middle of the bar, and unisex. And really tiny. But by the time you need one, who really cares? The bartender was a really sweet Irish chick, and she has a heavy hand...especially with the Jameson shots. I am beyond indebted to this place. I had to scramble to find a bar with a pool table to do a photoshoot and Smoky the manager was beyond gracious. He was amazingly accommodating. So five stars right off to the staff. This is also a great place to get a drink, funnily enough. The times I've been here, it hasn't been too busy (once on a Friday night for a few hours). It's cozy and inviting and non-douchey. I brought my out of town friends here and they wanted to shoot some pool. A great time was had by all, including my non-alcohol-drinking friend, who wasn't hassled in the slightest about sticking to water. The music is great (lots of 50s) but not too loud. I wish it was a bit closer to where I live, but being around Washington Square would probably wreck the unbusy, nice people atmosphere. This place, is a bar, like a real bar. I know that sounds pretty stupid but it's really the kind of dark, old school place that you think of. The bartenders are really friendly, it's small but not crowded and the music isn't loudly blasting so you can't hear, no strobes and an honest to God pool table that's decent. The beer prices to are cheap (super cheap given the area) and one of my group had been here before and was quickly recognized. Why we don't go there more often I'm not sure. read more

This is the type of bar you look for at 10pm on a Saturday night that you know you're probably not going to find. What bar in SoHo is going to have an empty table for you and your friends to sit at, reasonably priced beers and soft enough music that you can have fun talking to each other rather than straining to hear? Ok, so this review makes me sound like I'm your crotchety old grandmother. I'll admit it. But I was so pleased to find that open big table and this near-perfect bar. We sat there for hours, nursing $6 Guinnesses. And it was great.... Except for the bathrooms which, thanks to the multiple Guinnesses, I had to frequent numerous times. The bathrooms are accessed through two unmarked doors in the center of the bar. Both stink horribly. It is as if someone has consistently peed on the floor for years instead of ever using the toilet. I would rather use a Greyhound Bus bathroom. It is gag inducing. If only they could do something about the lavatories (l don't know... maybe clean them?) then this would be a real gem. read more

If I had yelp about 5 years ago, I would've been the duke here a hundred times over. I worked down the block from Toad, and spent many many many hours here afterwards. ALL the bartenders here are great and they treat everyone like family. The crowd here is very friendly and easy going. There are some damn good pool players that come in here from time to time, so there's no doubt you'll find a good game here. It's really funny to read some of the other reviews of this place. Some say it's dive-y, some don't. For those that say it is...you really don't know what "dive-y" is. Perhaps you got lost while shopping in SoHo, lol. While it does have that feel, it's way too clean and well kept to be one. If you're in SoHo looking for an awesome bar to just kick back, drink and shoot pool, look no further. This isn't exactly the type of place I go out of my way to visit, but since a dear friend of mine holds his birthday bash here and here only, I stop by at least once a year. As other reviewers stated, it is divey but not in the dirty way where you dread stepping inside the bathroom and try not to touch anything. It's got an inviting feel to it with some old New York charm and character. The drinks are reasonably priced..not cheap but not overpriced. The pool table has a decent amount of space around it so you aren't hitting everyone. Best of all, you don't have people watchers here. You know what I mean...those creepy guys looking to score or those obnoxious girls looking at what kind of shoes you are wearing and pretending to be drunker than they are. I stopped in on St. Patty's day to get out of the snow and also enjoy a celebratory pint. We were looking for an Irish Pub, but I liked the low-key look and also that it wasn't adorned with an explosion of shamrocks and green like most of the other places. Guinness on tap, a great bartender, and a chill atmosphere...the perfect way to spend a couple hours in the afternoon. Halfway through my first visit, I decided that Toad Hall is my favorite bar in New York. It's not exactly local for me, but I'll gladly head south every week or so for a drink after work. The super nice staff is genuinely friendly and helpful - when I was unsure about trying a particular beer, the bartender insisted I try a small glass first. No kitchen so you're allowed to bring in outside food; they recommended Saluggi's pizza, and I do too! The place is divey but not gross, not tiny but not cavernous, and decorated with toads but not in an obsessive way. I appreciate that it has hints of everything I look for in a bar: good, unobtrusive music; subtle TVs tuned to sports; a pool table; and a normal, polite crowd. Yeah, the bathrooms are small, but there's plenty of room to do your business (unless you're extra wide), so I don't understand the fuss. read more

Let's have some honesty time here. The first time I stepped foot in Toad Hall I was grabbing lunch and realized there was no way I could make it back to the office without going #2 in my pants. Normally I wouldn't have a problem buying a drink after using the facilities, but it was 2pm and I was still hung over from the previous night (..and working). So I left, and felt like a bad person, but I knew soon enough I would be back. And back I've been! Toad Hall is a classic, casual dive-y bar, which is my favorite type of bar. I've read quite a few reviews claiming this was a dive bar that serves exceptionally low-priced drinks. However, when I got here, it looked like any other ordinary semi-popular bar in Manhattan, narrow and over-crowded. Divey? Not exactly. Okay, an old rickety wooden floor, but a fairly kept yet aged wooden bar with functional bar stools that didn't have any broken legs or gashed top cushions, and candles on the tables? What's so divey about that? I found the two bartenders to be somewhat rude and aloof. They looked at us several times and each time I was about to speak, they looked the other way or decided to serve another customer. Finally, a bartender asked us what we wanted. Two pints of Blue Point please. "That'll be $14." Cheap?? I definitely think not. $7 for a pint of beer in Manhattan is actually the norm if not expensive, especially during happy hour (it was roughly 6pm). And Blue Point is a local beer!! It seemed like a nice bar to relax and have a drink or two. The pool table in the back was a nice touch. But with less than friendly bartenders and overpriced drinks, I didn't see much to like about this place. Unless I was not in the know, I'll take my business elsewhere. read more

When wandering through Soho, annoyed by all the...Soho-ness, I checked Yelp to see what was around. Toad Hall came up. We decided to check out the menu on their website. Wait. There's no website? Intriguing! Must. Go. Toad Hall is everything I could wish for in a dive bar. Old. Dirty in a clean way. Weird decor (Wind in the Willows themed, obvi). Cheap beers. Friendly staff. Interesting people bellied up to the bar. Big shout out to Joe, the bartender, who looks like Thor, should Thor have retired from superheroing to work at a dive bar in Soho. Super welcoming, funny, friendly, and plays great music to boot. Great hair, too. The next time we're in Soho we will definitely make a point of stopping by, and you should too! read more

I have to agree with what many other Yelpers have said: this is a great find in SoHo. It was late on a Saturday night when I went with some friends. We just finished dinner, were a bit tired and none of us wanted a huge scene. After strolling past packed-to-the-walls bars, we found this place. There was a table available and plenty of room to get a drink at the bar. The music wasn't so loud that you had to shout to hear each other, and the atmosphere was very laid back. The interior is dark, and a bit dive-y, but that's what makes the place so great -- it's a no stress place to unwind and chat with friends. Another great thing about this bar -- the prices!! No nonsense, old school bar with solid service and decent prices (particularly given the area, as mentioned by others). Pool table at the back is great if you can get a game, and worth getting to know the staff as they'll treat you well and remember your face! Would be five star for me if they showed international sports and sorted out the decor a bit (my girlfriend hated the slide door toilets), but I guess that would take away the charm. I've been here a few times in the past to have some beers and play pool. Not typically an area in town I hang out in and thought I would grab a drink before I headed to a fashion week event I was attending. My friend and I showed the female bartender ID and vaccination card happily but she was looking at us like we were doing something wrong. She definitely did not like us based on how we're were dressed and I felt very uncomfortable. My friend wasn't sure what to order so I went ahead first and asked if I could have a vodka Red Bull (not my typical drink but I needed some caffeine) and she retorted extremely rudely that they didn't have Red Bull like I had asked her for the most ridiculous thing in the world and seemed to mock me. Judging from other reviews it seems this woman is very unpleasant, not sure why she has a job in the service industry and I wouldn't be inclined to come back again. read more

You can order pizza from the place down the street, except when you call to order and they find out where you are, they don't even ask what kind of pizza. They just bring what tastes like what they do best- this savory, tomato basil sauce with the best pieces of mozzarella scattered across it. But Toad Hall... right. This place is a dive bar. I love dive bars. So when we were walking by on our trek through the city naturally this seemed like the greatest place to pop in to warm up with a nice drink. The interior is nothing special, you're probably expecting too much if you want a bathroom door that's not a sliding door. But the drinks were reasonably priced and the bartender was heavy handed with the pour.
