Whenever I come home, I always make the effort to come to TJ's. I never actually have to buy anything, but I always come out with something. TJ's has a great array of Asian groceries as well as things that you don't typically find in the other supermarkets. You can never go wrong with their little okazuya counter or bentos in the back! There's sufficient parking right out front, but there's also street parking since it is in an industrial lot--I've never had issues finding parking though. read more

I could go here everyday. TJ's is located in the Wailuku industrial area. They're a grocery store, Okazuya, deli and caterer. I specifically go here for their ready to go bentos. They have fish, chicken and beef options like chicken yakitori, teriyaki beef, misoyaki butterfish, saba, shrimp tempura, chicken katsu, korean chicken, and musubis to go. You can also get poke and items from their case of prepared food to create your own plate lunch. I've also ordered half pans of food. TJ's website lists their menu and prices. You submit your order online (check online for cut off times) then you'll get called to make payment over the phone. Our favorites are the butterfish and korean chicken bentos. Place is easy to find and parking available. It's your normal asian style market vibe. Service is decent. We went for bentos, manju, and cinnamon rolls. Their bentos are really affordable and good. We went around 10:30am and they only had a few left. Not sure if every day is like that, but just go early if you want more of a selection. We got the Korean chicken. I really enjoyed their apple manju, nice buttery goodness with the perfect amount of apple filing. I would go back for more manju for sure. The cinnamon rolls were just okay. The roll dough was more like plain bread tasting and the frosting was a cream cheese rather than your usual traditional icing. I think it needed more cinnamon too. I decided to try their bentos again. And again, my low expectations were met. This time they had the Unagi Bento, and it was ok. A bit too sweet for my taste. My friend had the shrimp tempura. What a joke. The tempura batter was so oily! It was like trying to bite into wet and soft jerky! But of course, I'm comparing it again to Yokohama's street/combini store bentos, and it's no comparison. So, I'm giving up. I'm not coming back here for food. Japanese Goods, I can get online for a cheaper price, too. For good Japanese food, I'll hold out for Don Quijote on Oahu and a couple of others I can't remember at the moment. Sorry TJ. A random warehouse in an industrial area but they have tasty cheap bentos, snacks of all kinds, and they carry this snack called huff n puff that my friend had been asking me to find for a while now. Workers were so friendly and kind. They helped me find exactly what I was looking for, and even recommended me some snacks to take on the plane. Services is a little slow and the displays can get messy but it's a warehouse but wow the food and the choices are so fantastic. My favorite place for poke Bentos cooking utensils, some fun local desserts groceries. Been to Japan twice I really tell much difference at TJ's from small grocers in Morris in Japan. My family and I enjoy stopping at TJ's Warehouse on our way either to or from Kahului Airport. We go mainly for their variety of bentos, but they have other items to enjoy as well. I like their Azuki Flaky Manju. I also bought some Cymz Sweet Kre8tions Chocolate Chip and White Chocolate Chip Kookeez, that I bought on this trip. The Manju was flaky and tasted really good. The Kookeez cookies were tasty as well. I've got a sweet tooth, and I'm always looking for something to satisfy my craving. The staff are always personable and friendly. TJ's is the type of place that I'll unabashedly give 5 stars for its convenience, affordability, & simplicity. Is it the most gourmet experience? Definitely not, but it's not trying to be! TJ's came in clutch when my fiancé and our group of 5 other friends were hauling ass to the airport to catch our flight out of Maui. We somehow ended up with a friend in the hospital that we had to coordinate pick-up with, and we needed to find a place to get food that we could get QUICKLY without settling for a chain fast food restaurant, you know what I mean? We found TJs in my bookmarks and fell in lurrrve when we walked in. SOOO many bentos, so many choices, and all priced so reasonably. The grab & go aspect here is probably the best part of it all. The food itself is SATISFYING, nothing particularly show-stopping, but it does the job. Overall, I would come back when I find myself in Maui again! read more

Been meaning to visit TJ's Warehouse for weeks and finally made it. This has to be the biggest and best Asian grocery store on Maui. From my perspective, the only thing missing is tanks of live fish and other denizens of the deep. But, I was there for the bento boxes. Like a plate lunch, but more compact. A little covered tray with compartments to keep your food from touching each other. It's probably satisfying for your OCD tendency. I picked the Korean Chicken & Teri Beef Bento. It was a very satisfying meal for just $7.25. I had a couple questions about some of the extra items in my bento, and I asked a guy who was bringing out some more items. He was really friendly and filled in the details for me. The Korean Chicken was breaded and tender. It tasted good, but I was hoping for more Asian flavor (BBQ or spicy). The teriyaki beef was also tasty and very lean. It was a little chewy, as expected, but cooked just right. White rice was included, with seeds to give it some flavor. Shoyu packets, available at checkout, helped out, too. Two bonus items were included. A little breaded nugget that turned out to be a shrimp cake, that was nice, and a few pickle slices. I probably wouldn't have recognized the pickles, because they were really small. Not very sweet or sour, but another nice extra. I'll definitely return to try other meals and groceries. read more

TJ is one of my favorites! It's my favorite grocery store poke on the Island and my favorite value on the Island. I absolutely will never turn down an opportunity to come in and try TJ poke. TJ is in an industrial area. Don't be discouraged if you see the building and it's says chemical supply, I believe the family that owns this place owns other businesses as well. And don't worry about the food, it's authentic and fresh. This is a local place and if you're like me and love to feel like a local wherever you travel, this is somewhere you must go! You see local workers coming in to pick up there food as well as locals getting lunch and groceries. This is where an auntie will swap an oyakodo recipe with you (she told me I need to use chicken katsu and her style is a little sweet) and an uncle will show you the right way to order a poke bowl (must do with the sushi rice and nori) I find the Okazuya a great value. It reminds of a Kalinderia in the philippines where you will find prepared food at the ready and bento boxes packed and ready to go. These bentos are perfect if you're planning a day out and want some food to go! Love coming to TJ's for my Asian grocery needs and of course their bentos - they have a deli counter where you can put together your own plate lunch or you can just grab what they have under the heat lamps in front of the deli. I grabbed some Shiso pickled daikon which was sooo yummy! They had the stainless steel chopsticks I was looking for as well - perfect for the humid weather we have in Haiku. They have such a wide variety of sauces and condiments and ingredients for cooking. They even have tabi style socks! Love the variety of Asian products! It is harder to find Asian markets in Maui as opposed to Oahu. TJ's Warehouse is probably the largest in Maui, although it is tiny compared to ones on Oahu like Don Quixote. We relied on Yelp to guide us here and we loved their prepared food offerings. Lots of bento boxes, poke and hot lunch plates. They also have a deli section and provided some limited fresh fruits and veggies. Why has it taken me so long to write a review for this amazing?!? I have no idea. Pretty much the only place to grab Japanese ingredients, asian snacks & gadgets, & grab & go bentos. Another place where I can never leave empty handed. Don't ever come here when you're hungry, you will get lured into something, I can guarantee it. I've come numerous times to grab a bentos & can never leave without a snack. The bentos are always yummy & fresh & if you come later in the day, you can get them at a discount. There are also several local companies that sell their snack items here too. TJ's has also come through for me many times when I looked all over the island for a certain ingredient & have found it here. Cheapest and best bang for the buck bentos on Maui. If you're looking for a cheap grab and go meal, stop by TJ's Warehouse. My wife likes the miso butterfish, I don't have a preference, everything is good for the price. Their poke is made fresh and every poke I tried is good too. They also sell different Japanese products from candies and snacks, to household goods, to groceries, to pens and pencils. Do not let the outside fool you inside you will find bento galore. Their is a huge selection of pre-made bento but their is a counter where you can select your own and they put it in a container for you. Was craving a Japanese bento box and knew right where to go. We got there before lunch time so there were lots of choices. The people behind the fresh counter were so helpful and answered all my questions. It was a hard choice but I wanted chicken and beef so picked up the Korean chicken and teri beef. We were heading to the park to eat so was happy to see a plastic fork was wrapped up with the box. While checking out asked for napkins and soy sauce. She offered me a bag which I appreciated. You need to wear a mask and everyone was pretty good about distancing themselves while looking at the bento and waiting to pay. There is hand sanitizer before u enter the store and on your way out. Tell me where is the best place on Maui to grab bentos other than TJ's. You can't! TJ's has the best bentos on the island and that is a fact. I love love looove coming here for a quick grab and go freshly made bento. My favorite is the korean chicken bento. Always be early when you want to grab bentos because they sell out fast! I also love getting miso ahi from their poke case. This store sells asian snacks, meals, grocery, kitchenette, and more. This is my go to for asian grocery shopping. They always update the things they sell when it comes to drinks and snacks. You can even find trendy Japanese snacks as soon as you walk in. I love buying the Japanese honey butter potato chips and the Korean banana milk. There are so many things to choose from and I cant help but go overboard on what I want/need. Some come for the Asian grocery products that cannot be found anywhere else. Others come for the food, and I am one from them. TJ's claims to have the best bento in Maui, and I have to agree. There is a decent variety to choose from such as chicken katsu, teriyaki beef, Korean fried chicken, or misoyaki butterfish. There are also spam musubi bento boxes too, or you can get the musubi alone. Aside from bento boxes, there is poke, an okazuya, and a catering business. The food is really cheap, and it is pretty tasty. For the price point, it really is the best bento. Even better, any bento left towards the end of the day is discounted to half off. One of my go-to places to grab a quick bento or choose from a variety of musubi's. They have an amazing selection to choose from. Whether you're looking for a snack to enjoy at the beach or to enjoy on a flight to a neighbor island or the mainland. They also have a good variety of grocery items and basic necessities. Parking is available and close to the store. The staff are very helpful and friendly. On my latest trip to Maui in October, we enjoyed a variety of musubi's, a mini Korean chicken bento and a breakfast bento with rice. We enjoyed these on our return flight to the mainland. One of the best places to get a bento and/or a quick lunch downtown. Been going here for years and all of the staff are great, especially the hot line crew. So friendly and warm, consistently good customer service even when they're busy. My favorites are the chicken hekka off the hot line, mochi malasadas, chocolate trifle from the dessert section and the Korean chicken bentos. They also have really great poke - miso, shoyu, oyster, etc. I would say their poke is much better than Sack 'n Save/Foodland and Safeway. Sometimes those other stores' poke is too chewy or tough but TJ's poke always is tender and "melt in the mouth" as it should be. Only complaints in all my years shopping there: Their chow fun and fried rice are just mediocre and dry at times, but everything is a great value, so nothing major. Their kalua pig also has too much of a liquid smoke flavor for my taste. Both don't affect my rating as they've provided many wonderful experiences otherwise. Lots of great selections and great grocery options too. If you're trying to find the Korean hot noodles from the spicy noodle challenge this is also the place to go. Not many other stores on Maui carry them. Overall a great, affordable place for lunch. Plenty of parking and wonderful crew. Just get there early so they don't run out of the good stuff! read more

Legit Hawaiian style bentos. Each comes with a scoop of Japanese rice, a range if proteins from mackerel to chicken katsu, pickled root veggies, and bite sized shrimp croquette. All at a value of 7-10 bucks...real food for real people at affordable prices. They also have a very extensive selection of Japanese goods from cookware to snacks. And a hot food counter that opens later in the morning. This is a must stop for your trip to Hana. We picked up breakfast and lunch for four at less than what you'd pay for meal for one at Mama's. This store carries a wide variety of Asian, most Japanese, food items. It also carries paper goods, cookware, and prepared food items. While they have gradually expanded to carrying some popular Korean food items, their selection is somewhat limited to noodles and prepackaged foods. Several years ago, they expanded their prepared food section and it is popular go to place because of its selection and ample parking. They carry a wide variety of poke, prepared foods, and bentos, which is where you can find great value. The stores popularity enabled it to expand its weekday hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Bargain hunters come around 1:30 p.m. each day to pick through the half off bentos. On some days you can find a good selection, but on other days the pickings may be slim. Seniors (60 and over) get to take a 4% discount, as the store pays the sales tax. Be sure to sign up for their rewards program and receive email messages on their extra value items. read more

TJ's Warehouse is my favorite Asian Grocery store on the island. They are my go-to for things like miso paste, kamaboko, aburage, gyoza, & other Asian ingredients that aren't easily found in other grocery stores. They have a lot of Japanese & Korean brand products like different types of mochi (desserts & ones used in cooking), gochujang, Korean pancake mix (for pajeon), soju, etc... They also have fresh vegetables, a hot food section, dessert selection, & alcohol. The best part is that their prices are really affordable and sometimes cheaper than other big box stores. TJ's also does catering and they are my go-to when I need to bring something delicious for a bigger group. They do platters, full & half pans of your choice of dish, & a set menu. You must place your catering order at least two days in advance online via their website or by phone. Orders must be paid for at least one day in advance. A TJ's customer service representative will contact you to verify your order before it is prepared and to confirm time of pickup. PLATTERS: Sushi, musubi, combo platters (choice of 2 items), sashimi, poke, & seafood combo platters available. FULL / HALF PANS: Lots of variety. Dishes range from salads, noodles, beef, chicken, & pork choices. SET MENU: Prices range from $7.75 per person to $9.95 per person. 25 people minimum. My favorite things to order are the meat jun (SO GOOD), roast pork, chicken katsu, & yakitori chicken. The yakitori chicken is based on the old Shirokiya recipe which brings back so much memories from my hanabata days when we still had Shirokiya at Ka'ahumanu. Food holding Bins are also available to rent for $20.00/day. Chafing Dish Sets (stand, water pan, & dome cover) go for $12.00/day. Super affordable, especially the food holding bin. It came in super handy for my son's birthday party at the beach! If you're having a big party, they also offer a lot of goods in bulk sizes (paper plates, napkins, forks, platters, aluminum foil, containers, kitchen ware, etc) which is also perfect for small businesses. They even carry all the ingredients to make boba + shave ice containers, syrups. After getting all my groceries, I like to end it with Samurai Brand Hawaii Frost Frozen Dairy Treat. This soft serve is so YUM! Last time I was there they were carrying the strawberry and melon flavors. At first I wasn't sure about the two mixed together, but quickly changed my mind after having a taste. They really have a lot of variety in this little store, lol. I love it! Location: in Wailuku industrial, you'd never really guess you could get a nice fresh hot bento inside if it wasn't for the slightly faded window paintings advertising them. Big parking lot, but mostly for the semis that have to go through, there's roughly 30 stalls. There's a tent located right outside the building so you can enjoy your food in the shade. Staff: young and old all their staff have AMAZING customer service and are really friendly. Food: this place has a variety of food. They have fresh okazuya daily, various poke, freshly prepared bentos, frozen food, desserts, and non perishables. They also do catering; you can call or order online! TJ's Warehouse is literally a warehouse, located in an industry area by other warehouses. You may not see TJ's Warehouse business sign initially from Alua St, but may be able to see the larger sign above it, "Maui Chemical & Paper Products, Inc". TJ Warehouse is best known for their bento boxes and was highly recommended by a friend of mine to stop here (Monica S) while visiting Maui. My husband and I ended up coming to this place twice on our last day on the island. We had plans to hike out to Nakalele Blowhole and then eat our bento boxed lunch afterwards. Then later on in the evening, we came back to pick up a few more bento boxes to eat at the airport before catching our late flight out back home. We first arrived at 10 am (plenty of parking in their lot) and saw a large selection of bento boxes and ended up purchasing: Misoyaki ButterFish Bento Box, $8.65 prior to tax- We purchased 2 boxes of this. This box came with a miso glazed butter fish that was just so delicious. The fish was tender, but the only negative was that my fish had a few thin, small bones (but my husband's didn't). Also included in the box was plenty of white rice, a small breaded potato and pickles (my husband liked them but I wasn't much of a fan of how sour it was). Spam Musubi, $1.95 prior to tax- TJ's Warehouse is a Japanese market and so they sell other food items besides bento. They also sell Japanese crackers, chips, etc and house ware items. This spam musubi was great, which it never ceases to amaze me how great spam musubi is from a market in Hawaii. ------------------------- (Total= $20.05 after tax) Mochi Malasada, $0.85 each, prior to tax- My husband ended up purchasing 2 so we each could have one. I loved the chew of the malasadas, definitely better than your typical malasada since it was a mochi. Perfect size and sweetness. Please note that the mochi malasada is paid for at the place next to the bento boxes, where other hot food items are sold. You can also purchase poke bowls next to the bento boxes too. Then later when we came back around 6 pm, we were surprised to see that the poke and the hot food (where we bought the mochi malasadas) were closed and also that there were not as many choices of bento boxes as earlier that morning (so come early). There were also no more spam masubi (oh well, guess we didn't need to get one more before leaving Maui). We ended up getting the following: Seasoned Rice, $3.84 prior to tax- I got the last seasoned rice, which had furikake and edamame. It was a lot of rice but I really liked it. Definitely a portion good enough for 2 people. Yakitori Chicken, $5.89 prior to tax- This was definitely a lot of chicken. I tried to pick the smallest tray of chicken and still did not end up finishing all of it (between my husband and I). The chicken was oily but tasty. Chicken Katsu Curry Bento Box, $7.95 prior to tax- My husband picked this because this was the only full meal bento box left. This was definitely a lot of food for one person and the chicken katsu was pretty good. The curry had a nice hearty- ness. This bento box also had white rice and 2 pork dumpling. --------------------------- (Total= $18.42 after tax) Overall, I am glad that we ended up coming here and was glad that we were able to try this place twice. The airport doesn't have that many food choices and would highly recommend that you consider purchasing food before coming.
