This is our first place we ate at when we landed and let me tell you it is authentically delicious it's quaint portions are very nice. The food is delicious. Service is very good for me. Never experiencing a Hawaiian environment before so I'm have to assume it was a positive experience ambience is kind of plain but you know it's a traditional Japanese Hawaiian restaurant Diet Coke didn't taste kind of flat it was a can that could be the fact I still have a bit of jet lag and maybe it was just not a fresh can but they have these really interesting bright multicolor, pink and orange or it's like a guava mango something else in a can and apparently popular cause they got lots of it there more than they have other things and there's cans in the recycling area so I'm gonna have to try that at some point. If we happen to be by that way again, I would definitely eat there again and the kimchi side of kimchi. It's simple straight up kimchi that's delicious without having that extra fancy muscle oyster crap that some people try to put up in their kimchi that should only be in there if you're curing it but not when you're serving it and this was very nice and a little bit of a kick, but it was delicious. read more

My family has dined at this restaurant for YEARS! It was a full circle moment to be able to bring my kids here! The kids enjoyed the keiki bento, which included half a spam musubi, Saimin, beef teriyaki, chicken katsu and a snack/dessert. I indulged in the chicken katsu which featured a crispy coating on tender chicken, and sauce on the side. The mini ramen was also delicious l! My partner (a first timer to the restaurant) had the bento special which included pieces of sushi, sashimi, and yakitori chicken. Needless to say we left incredibly full and satisfied. Landed from the airport and went straight here for a ma and pa meal! The food was okay. I noticed that their rolls were mostly rice rather than protein and one of my rolls was just drenched in spicy mayo. I wouldn't recommend a sushi fix here, but the cooked food options are made with love! The bento special was pretty good for the price. The chicken curry katsu was very crunchy and I enjoyed the curry taste without all the extra seasoning and salt. Service is really friendly and sweet! Ambiance is very cozy. After not eating at Matsu for about 5 years, I decided to come back. We are so happy that we did. The chicken karaage was delicious, cooked exactly the way I like it, plus potato salad that was excellent. My wife had beef tofu, which she loved. The nice thing about this place is the prices are very reasonable, as well as a smaller portion. I don't need the extra large portions. The customer service is great with Carl and Annie. I have some heard people say this is one of the oldest continuing functioning restaurants in Maui. Don't know if that's true or not but it is a classic casual Japanese restaurant. In fact, if you could close your eyes, you could be in Osaka or outside of Tokyo the food is very similar, the quality is good but not great. The prices are not dirt cheap but not expensive. It's a casual restaurant to have meals when you're working or maybe lunch out the seats and tables are plan. Restaurant is appearing to follow Covid protocols still, which is a good thing. Onto the food I actually had the Bento box special, which is kind of a survey of the menu with some chicken teriyaki some salmon, sashimi, and a couple of pieces of sushi. I have had much better Japanese food and much worse Japanese food at the same price, but I would say this place for the food is a solid B and I hope it continues to stay as part of our community for a very long time to come. read more

The food is fine. But it's dirty. Tables are smudged with dry food. Floor is dusty and strewn with debris. The window sill is dusty and full of gecko droppings. Ever since I spent a week in Tokyo and dined in all different levels of cafes, bars and restaurants, I realized how little cleanliness matters in the US. There really is no excuse for a dirty eating establishment. Japan is proof that even inexpensive and unassuming places can be clean. read more

With Covid, they've offered (and still are as of 2 weeks ago!) a % discount on your order if you come back within 2 weeks of the receipt. Any discount helps! Also, I've been ordering sushi from them and although it's a bit pricey (umeque which is ume cucumber is $5!) it's well made. It's the rice, def. Nice and fluffy, cucumber crunchy, decent ume. Be sure to ask without wasabi, as it comes with it. I also increased my rating to five because they're always nice here and the food is consistent! They also have modified their restaurant to a more take-out kind of vibe to accommodate Covid restrictions and have gotten much better answering their phones (not that they didn't answer, they just were always busy, so you'd get a busy tone). My only complaint is that it's pretty small so you have to order first and then wait for a table to clear up. Wish they had a bit more space to seat more people. Went here yesterday. Called my order in some to a friendly girl on the phone. She's was really sweet. She told me it would be 10 minutes, and to val then when we arrive she'll come outside to your car and bring your order. So we went to get a soda to kill some time. It was 10 minutes, called when we arrived she came outside really fast told me mybtotal. |12.50| have her 17 dollars told her to Keep the change. She then gave me a receipt so I can use on a order within 2 weeks for 20% off. Yay.. perfcet.. We went to a parking lot nearby to eat it was a little overcooked on the outside but undercooked on the inside.. long story short I had ti find a bathroom within 15 minutes of eating my stomach was so sore. Restaurant Matsu is a Maui institution. A favorite among locals, this mom and pop shop has earned this badge of honor after many years in the business; 35 years, give or take. They were originally located in Maui Mall, but about 20 years ago moved to their location on Alamaha Street. It's still owned and run by the same family, using the same recipes created by the family patriarch. In an industry where doors close more often than not, they've withstood the test of time and have built a loyal customer base. Growing up, I always wondered about that 'house' on Alamaha and what kind of food they served. They never seemed to be open whenever it would pique my interest so I never paid them a visit up until maybe a year or two ago. You walk into the restaurant to find a simple, cozy space that is more or less self-service. The menu is on the counter -- filled with your typical Japanese fare of udon, ramen, sushi, tempura, katsu, teriyaki, etc. Put your order in with the cashier and if you're dining in you get a number and a tray which you take to the table of your choice. If you're doing take out, you pay and wait for your order. While you're waiting, you can decide if you want dessert as they have shelves stocked with Maui Manjookie cookies ;) I've tried a handful of dishes since my inaugural visit: miso soup, tempura, piece of miso butterfish, soft shell crab roll, shrimp tempura roll, tonkatsu, oyako donburi, & tempura udon. The food is homey, not fancy. Not the best, but pretty good, and the prices are very very reasonable. Except for that side of miso butterfish. For $4.50, I got a piece that was less than 2" x 2" ... I know it's normally expensive, but the piece was tiiiiny. I do not recommend. My favorite dish that I keep coming back to time and time again is the tempura udon. It always hits the spot and once I find something I really like from a restaurant, I will order the same thing for years to come. The side of tempura is always tasty as well.
