Locals know that this is a go to place for poke, snacks, and local plate lunches. It is only open on weekdays and is not open evenings. Parking is limited so you are not allowed to eat in your car. There are many places like Iao Valley, local parks, or Wailuku Heights to enjoy your meal if you are a visitor. Aside from the prices, Kaohu Store is almost exactly how it was back in the 70s and 80s. read more

I love the poke at Kaohu Store. My go-to favorite is the Hawaiian Style, but we tried the Shoyu Ginger this time and it did not disappoint. What we enjoy most is how fresh the fish is. You can really taste the quality. One little detail I appreciate is that they dice the onions small, rather than the big chunks you get at a lot of other places. It makes for a better bite every time. They have a great variety too, with everything from spicy ahi to tako and shoyu options. Are they on the higher priced side? Yes. Is it worth it? Also yes. This is a nice "treat yourself" kind of poke, and we will absolutely be back. If you are looking for quality fresh poke on Maui, give Kaohu Store a try. read more

My family and I were famished after our rough morning flight from SFO. I had looked up a poke place prior to my trip, and this place popped up. It was fun to try this place! It's definitely more of a convenient store than a restaurant. Everything is to-go only, there is definitely no seating available. Also, if you thought you wanted to eat in your car, don't plan on it, as there is a very explicit sign that says no eating, parking for 5 minutes only. Despite all these particular eating criteria, I enjoyed trying the various pokes! They have at least 10 different to choose from, that it was difficult choosing just two for my husband and I to try. I believe I got the Hawaiian Style, and also the Shoyu style. I liked the Shoyu one a bit better, for more sauciness and soy sauce added to the ahi. I also really liked how this place includes rice (huge win for eating right away!) and in a separate container! Well thought out!! Also credit cards are accepted. Great poke find quite close to the airport. Would recommend if you're starving coming off your flight, want something fast and easy, that you can enjoy instantly. read more

Ate here after a trip to Iao valley and with a Eater recommendation. It didn't disappoint. I had the spicy poke and my husband had the ninja poke . The rice and poke didn't disappoint. If I lived in Maui ; I would eat here again and again and again . Best poke ever with a non fussy ambience , friendly and helpful service . They don't allow loitering and eating in the parking lot . We went to a nearby park and enjoyed our poke feast . read more

The best poke I had during my trip was from this store and I'm mad at myself that I didn't get a bigger serving! The furikake salmon was amazing and my personal fav of all the poke I tried during my trip (and I ate a lot of poke during 10 days). The auntie who runs the store is very friendly and helpful! There's a variety of flavors to choose from and other bites to eat too. It's a small store with limited parking, so once you buy your food you've got to find somewhere else to eat. Do not let its small appearance fool you tho, bc there's some real magic in that food read more

A true mom and-pop gem serving some of the freshest poke on the island. The shoyu with ginger and the salted hamachi are standouts and absolute must-orders. They're closed on weekends, so I actually plan my trips to fly in or out on weekdays just to make sure I can get my fix. read more

If you're in Wailuku and craving fresh poke, Kaohu Store is an absolute must ! I stopped in three times in one week because I couldn't get enough of their hamachi, ogo, lomi salmon, and taegu. Each visit, the poke was incredibly fresh and flavorful, with generous portions and top-quality ingredients. They have a daily food special and the Maui hot dog--perfect for a quick bite. While the parking lot is on the smaller side, it's well worth the effort to find a spot. Just keep in mind they're closed on the weekends, so plan your visit during the week. Highly recommend for anyone looking to enjoy authentic poke in Maui! read more

Wow, amazing poke. Buttery smooth fish and great flavored marinade. You cannot go wrong with Kaohu store. Although I am just a visitor in Hawaii and think all poke here is amazing already, my local friends were the ones who recommended this place as one of their go-tos. Service was quick, and the ambiance/setting was just a simple grocery store. This was a nice place for poke just by the fact that it was quick and not many people were here (I'm assuming it's only locals who go here as it is inside a store). read more

Super fresh poke and simple, just the way we like it. The only reason it didn't get a 5 star was it was a bit too salty. We ordered the hamachi, spicy tuna, All In One, shoyu ahi. read more

Kaohu Store is completely no-frills -- except for some of the freshest poke-to-go you'll find anywhere. Tucked into an industrial part of Kahului, it is a true local stop where people swing by for lunch or to grab something great to take home. I picked up a large container of Hawaiian-style poke for my Airbnb, and it ended up being an amazing dinner plus snacks for the week. There are easily a dozen other marinated and seasoned varieties to choose from, all looking incredibly fresh. They carry a few basic essentials and beer, but the real draw is the outstanding poke the family owners prepare daily. Takeout only -- no dine-in -- and absolutely worth the stop. read more

Simply the best poke we've had on our trip so far. Bypass foodland all together and just make this your first stop off the plane. My husband and I got 1/4 pound each of the salmon, shoyu ahi, shoyu ginger ahi, and the hamachi. They're all really, really good and super fresh. The people working behind the counter are all warm, welcoming, and kind. They even gave us recommendations on the most popular selections. I think we're going to have to make another stop here before we leave. read more

A very good spot for poke and other fresh seafood. There are only a few parking spots and they have a 5min time limit. There's no seating available so everything is to go. Their fish is very fresh and their flavor combinations are delicious. My favorite was the spicy ninja and I would definitely go back the next time I'm in the area. read more

Life changing tuna poke, better than any salmon I've had. We got four 1/4 pound cups to try more flavors. Spicy Tuna and Got Em All were our favorites, Shoyu a close third, and the fresh and clean Lipoa fourth. We also got two spam musubis- while it was thick, it wasn't dense and the rice still warm, soft and fluffy and the spam seasoned with a sweet glaze. Service was quick, there's no indoor dining, more order grab and go situation. read more

I had high expectations for the poke, but I thought it was just okay. Friendly service and the laulau chicken was to die for! The store is a little bare but they carry the stuff that matters. Apparently they have hotdogs too! read more

Parking is limited with a few spots in front. You could try to park on the street and quickly drop in to grab the food. Upon entering, you'll see a convenience store with many snacks and other assortments you may need for your Maui adventure. The star is definitely the poke. You'll see so many types of fish and flavorings. You can ask for tastings before ordering. Note that this poke is fish and rice - this is different from mainland. You can add rice for a fee. One thing to note, there is a prepared food option which is different every day (I think). I thought the prepared foods were okay - I prefer the poke over the prepared food since it came out quickly and I'm not sure how long it sat out read more

Our cousins live on Maui, and this is their favorite place to get poke. My favorite poke is their spicy ahi. They have a sign that apologizes for the high price of the ahi, which is pretty funny. We also got the spicy ninja and the shoyu ginger. All flavors were delicious! They also sell groceries, prepared foods, and drinks. We go here every time we are on Maui and always enjoy it. read more

Anytime I travel from Lānaʻi, Kaohu store will be my go to as soon as possible. The fish is fresh, the poke I always go for is anything without mayo on it. Lipoa, Hawaiian style, alea salt. One of the best poke or maybe even the best poke I ate. read more

Great grocery store poke option near the Waihee Ridge Trail. The 1/2 pound poke option is super filling and the marinade (I got the spicy ninja) was great; only complaint is that the fish chunks were quite large so it was sometimes hard to eat. I got the somen salad to pair with it, which had a deceiving name bc it had no vegetables, but it was still tasty regardless. It was imitation crab strips and rice noodles and came with a sauce. Paired great with the poke! The 1/2 poke and somen salad came out to slightly over $20. Friendly and quick service. They accept card! No seating inside and there's a sign in the parking lot that says no eating there, so we drove to a nearby park in the neighborhood to enjoy our food. read more

I love coming here. They have sweet ladies working. The line moved pretty fast today. We wanted hot dogs with everything on it. Plus we got shoyu poke. It was fantastic. Expensive but am worth it. Check out their Instagram for daily specials. It's always a good thing knowing what they're serving that day. So come here if you're looking fresh poke, chips, soda, plate lunches. Been here on 2 occasions and highly recommend! Poke runs out as the day progresses, so go early if possible. I tried 3 different ones and enjoyed them all. Hamachi was especially delish. My friend who lives on Maui recommended Kaohu Store for lunch. It's like a convenient store that sells fresh poke. They also have a daily special lunch plate. I would call to see what they got that day if you're unsure. Their poke bowl comes with your choice of poke and rice. Kinda neat how they package the poke with rice, you'll see when you go there. Their poke was fresh and ono!! I got the Samurai poke and shoyu ginger mix. Was so good i forgot to take a picture. The place reminds me of a mom and pops store. If you know mom and pops store then you'll know thats the best ones. Do yourself a favor and stop by Kaohu Store when you're on Maui and let the friendly staff serve you!! read more

Best poke on Maui. Everything was fresh and well marinated. Highly recommend the shoyu ginger ahi and salmon

Our flight attendant said "go try the poke here", so we did. The place is literally a hole in the wall and a bit run down tbh. There was a funky smell when we walked in and I started to think we had made a mistake. BUT the poke is prob the freshest we've ever had. At $26 a pound..I suppose it had better be haha. I would have to say try it. There is quite a variety too. We gobbled it all up and regrettably forgot to take a picture. read more

I had this place bookmarked so I know what places to check out when I make it to Maui. This past weekend we did a short trip to Maui so I was excited to try this place. They have a small parking lot in front of the store and signs that say, "no school parking" and "can't eat and sit in the car" due to limited parking spaces. Totally understandable. When we entered the store, we were greeted by 2 ladies; very friendly. I went straight to the poke, however, they didn't have what I wanted which was the salmon poke so I made do with a 2 choice poke bowl that consisted of shoyu ahi and ogo ahi. They separate the poke from the rice because of hot and cold items. The fish was so fresh! The seasoning was perfect for both poke. I can't wait to try other things. My friend raves about one of the spicy ones but that'll be for another time. read more

Ok this hole in the wall market is amazing! I'm so glad we found this place on yelp and decided to swing by. The poke is extremely fresh and there are so many different flavors to choose from. When we got here around 10ish, it was still too early and they were still in the process of setting out their selection so the lady behind the counter told us to come back in half an hour. We decided to wait and am so glad we did! We got the spicy ninja, hawaiian style and salmon poke. All were super tasty. Note that this is a grab and go place. There is nowhere to sit down and eat. The parking lot fits around 4-5 cars and there is a sign that you cannot park and eat there. This is located in between warehouses and is definitely not an easy to find location, but I'd highly recommend stopping by for some grab and go poke if you're nearby. read more

If I could give this place more than five stars I would! They have the best Hawaiian plate on the island. It includes laulau, kalua pork, lomi salmon, macaroni salad, and rice all for $14.99. The laulau is juicy and unwrapped so it's easy to eat. The kalua pork is juicy and seasoned perfectly. The lomi salmon is fresh and generously portioned. In fact, the whole plate is big enough to share. The Hawaiian plate is available every Friday. It used to be every other Friday but it was made into a weekly special by popular demand. Maybe it will turn into a daily special one day! It's recommended that you call in your order ahead of time because they get busy. We also got some chili pepper inamona poke because they also have some of the best poke on the island! read more

Having tried poke on almost all the islands, this is still one of my favorite places! I've had almost all the different types and nothing has let me down. My go to is a spicy ahi and ginger shoyu poke bowl with a side of dynamite poke! No idea what's in the dynamite poke besides imitation crab and clams I think? But it pairs really well with the shoyu ginger sauce that soaks into the rice! Amazing! Also they have old school red hot dogs with Mayo mustard sauce! A must!
