Packaging from socks bought at two TJ Maxx stores. The $4.50 got me three pairs of socks in Mt. Prospect, but six at the Palatine store.

Not my favourite TJ Maxx store. The building itself is nice, it is brighter than some of the older locations. It was added when they tore down most of Randhurst to build Randhurst Village (lifestyle mall) and when it opened they had some nice stuff for the first couple years. Now, not so much. It may be undersupplied. I am not sure what the sales numbers are, but at times the place seems busy. Last time I stopped by looking for conditioner. I found some running socks (Although I cannot run now, I can think about it) I wanted to buy , but half of them were missing. I asked if they could take money off because I was only getting half the socks. The manager assured me they were usually twice the price and they were reduced because the socks were missing. I thought this was odd because usually such merchandise is marked" as is" or something to that effect. He claimed this was not the case. So fine, I got them. (I think I would almost be better off never having worked in retail sometimes, because I really did not believe him.) Since it is my tendency to stop at TJ Maxx to look for hair products if I am nearby, I went to the Palatine store a few days later and found all six pairs of socks marked down to the same price I paid for three at Randhurst. You would think they could scan the tag with a markdown gun and figure this out, but then again, they could just tell the customer something to get rid of them. It's not a lot of money ($4.50) , but I hate to be overcharged. It is my pet peeve. Unfortunately, I had already washed the set of three socks. The manager also seemed like a stiff, humourless type that would not be helpful, so I did not bother going back. I found the package in the recycling though, and had the receipts. The store is OK, but the Palatine and Lake Zurich stores are better. I will still stop by occasionally though, because I love the prices, and I am always looking for hair products.

Just an average store but the wait time for check out are unusually high here, always. Selection of women's clothes is terrible.

Of course how can TJ be bad? Some stores have better inventory and I presume it's based on the local buyers. Still love the hunt and finds.

Great place to shop for seasonal items, as well as clothing and other accessories. Bought some candles for an amazingly low price.

I recently spent over $100 on ONE pair of leggings at a name brand store and am now beginning to regret not having come here first!

The store is owned by a lovely lady who curates goods from all over. I was especially a fan of the leather cuffs accented by metal rings and the completely over the top cute stitched change purses with random sayings plastered on them. At $5 a piece, these precious little change purses are the perfect on-hand gift. My personal fave it the red and goldenrod circus-esque option that says Boss Lady on one side and "Show Em The Bacon That Yer Makin" on the other. Beyond those goodies, Upstairs Boutique has a small selection of clothing and a baby/kids area near the back. If you're feeling gifty, drop by Upstairs Boutique.

I purchased an item at the shop a few years ago, and after getting the thumbs down from my daughter, I returned it, only to be handed a useless piece of paper--a store credit. I am very good about recalling details and do not remember receiving verbal notice about "store credit only returns" nor do I recall being told the store credit is only good for one year. I just literally handed that woman $55 for absolutely nothing while being forced to honor her shoddy business practices. In this day and age with wonderful selections and store policies, elsewhere, I don't see how she continues this narrow and unethical business practice. Her clothing/gift selection is certainly nothing special, so you'd be wiser, in this case, to not shop local.

Hearth & Home - This pilot light no longer goes out at the worst time

Some folks are disputing this but think about it, do you want the pilot of your plane on your trans-Pacific flight with 100 hours of flight experience?? Or do you want the person with 10,000 hours?? Speaking of pilots, the pilot light in my gas fireplace kept going out and it kept going out when outside temperatures went below 25F. That's right, it went out when you needed it most. So after firing up the pilot light manually for seemingly over two Winters, I said to myself, this is insanity. So I used Yelp to conduct a comparative analysis and called four fireplace companies. Here were the outcomes of those calls: - one company does not fix gas fireplaces. - the second company made me leave a message and it took the guy like 3 days to call back and he had an attitude like he was disgruntled from the get-go (meaning from the onset). - the third company wanted to charge a service call for diagnosing the problem and couldn't comment on the overall costs. - the fourth company was Hearth & Home and Pat (who turned out to be the owner) was a straight shooter (meaning forthcoming with details). Pat asked the year, make, model, serial number of my gas fireplace. He listened to me about my fireplace's symptoms and gave me a likely diagnosis and projected costs of the part and service. I had a very good feeling about his Integrity and thought the cost was reasonable. The appointment was booked and weeks later, Mike came as scheduled. Mike has 10 years experience and although he huffed and puffed here and there while fixing it, I had no doubt that with his expertise (10,000 hours) we would be up and running in no time. And that's what happened, my fireplace got fixed, within budget and right in time for me to make it to the Yelpies event last week!! Thank you Pat, Mike and H&H for this professional experience. Otherwise I would have missed that great event by Kesha and Celeste!!

First when they were on Northwest Highway and now at their location on Campbell Street. The same ownership opened a sister store a few doors down on Campbell called Charisma. A La Mode is still great, but I have found so many gifts for her at Charisma because I think it caters more towards a mature woman (trying to be PC here). My most recent experience was a Christmas gift for my wife. The store was locked, but I knew A La Mode was related, so I went in and asked for help. As has happened in the past, they cheerfully opened it and helped me with my task. I have often dealt with the daughter and she has great taste and an enthusiastic customer service spirit. I described what I was looking for and she had a few suggestions, but nothing hit. I noticed a display and she found the size I was looking for and it was an instance success. She even said the blue would work well with my wife's eyes. (so cool she remembers her). My wife says I never have given her a gift from Charisma that she hasn't loved, and this was no exception. In a time where we are click happy to quickly make a purchase and have it delivered to our home, it's such a good feeling to have special attention, someone to bounce ideas off of and have more of a value added experience through great customer service. If you're a guy, don't be intimidated because they will listen and help. Even if your wife's eyes are brown.
