Great store with great atmosphere. Love the yarns, classes and teachers! Highly recommend

This used to be my favorite yarn shop, and I would drive 40 minutes to go there. I have spent quite a bit of money there on yarn, patterns, and classes. All of a sudden, Every time I walked into the store I would be given the stink eye, and no one would speak to me. I would patiently wait watching for when the owner was free so that I could ask her questions, but she totally ignored me. Yes, she did know I was there and did know that I was waiting. I stopped going to that shop. Fast forward about a year later when I was at stitches with a friend. I passed by Mosaic yarn Studios Booth and asked a question about a pattern for a model they had there. The owner gave me a dirty look and said we sell it in the shop. As I walked away, I looked back and she was pointing at me and talking to her sales associate. I brought this up to my friend, and my friend told me that there was someone stealing from that shop, maybe she thinks it was you. When I frequented that shop, there was one time when I found something in my bag that they didn't ring up, and I went back into the store to pay for it. Stealing is not my cup of tea. Needless to say, I have never been back. I still spend a lot of money, but not there. read more

Rigid Heddle weaving classes and equipment offered. Wonderful Store - great selection of high-end and affordable yarns. Just finished a Rigid Heddle class with Georg. She is an art teacher who makes the Rigid Heddle a piece of equipment you must try! She enjoys experimentations in color and technique. I learned the "official" techniques, but was encouraged to try variations. Georg always answers question thoughtfully - I really understand and want to weave it all! Thank you. read more

I continued to be disappointed with the customer service at Mosaic. They have a NO RETURN/NO EXCHANGE policy. Which seems to be a bit out of line when it comes to gifts. I recently received a book as a gift that was purchased at Mosaic. I already have a copy of this book. I would like to exchange it, but I can't. I was told to sell it on the secondary market, however that is just not an acceptable response from a small business owner. read more

I took a frame weaving course here and I really enjoyed it. This is a small personal boutique store. They do carry somethings that are really beautiful, such as one of a kind purses. They have beautiful yarns. Look forward to coming back. read more

Ok 1st off I am all man and knitting is not my thing - BUT - my lady loves this place and drags me along to it all the time to watch her shop. She taken me to a lot of yarn stores (the things we do for love) and they are either some awful mega-store or this really boring yarn bin hole in the walls. That said - Mosaic is very cool. Nice staff there, the people know what they are about and there are a ton of selections. The other cool thing is all the display models all over the store. The teaching room in the back is a good size and the people at the store are always knitting and chatting. One lady - I think she might be a friend of the owner - actually spent a good amount of time with me showing me some real basic knitting. She was so cool it made it fun. (I think she was just keeping me busy while my girl spent more money - very clever) Then another time she gave me a hat she had finished just because she didn't want my head to be cold. My opinion - take it for what it is worth - a very cool friendly spot if you like that sort of thing. read more

What a lovely shop! Friendly and helpful staff. Great selection of yarn in all weights and fibres. Nice collection of notions, weaving supplies, needles and books/magazines. Free street parking in the area. I wouldn't necessarily drive out here from the city, but it's a great option for those who are already in the North Chicago suburbs! read more

I frequent this shop more than any other, usually about once a month. I like their selection of yarn and the location is great for me. That said, I am a bit disappointed in their staff. One in particular is always very cranky, another never leaves me alone, and others seem to be novice knitters and not very knowledgeable. A great shop for looking at yarn, but as I have been given bad advice from them on several occasions, I pretty much ignore everything they tell me and figure things out for myself. read more

A Mosaic of passive-aggressive staff. Went in today, the staff collectively seemed to have had a rough day, (and that rough day seemed to start in 1985 and has continued). Seems that bad day has been going on for a long time, too. There was one happy employee, and she is brand new. Luckily we weren't pestered, (as a guy in a yarn store, I'm usually treated as though I am going to break something), but all the staff could do is to complain about other customers in front of us. If you ever ask them to hold something for you, lemme tell you whoever you are, they hate you. B*tch, b*tch, b*tch. "Do you believe that she brought a dog with her? Well, I held the dog, but I had some kind of allergic reaction to it, and I had to leave work. Oh, the NERVE of some people!" Very unprofessional behavior for the staff. I was thinking, "if I buy something, what will they say about me?" The prices on the yarn are remarkable, in that they are exceptionally high. The samples are all mixed up, and it is extremely hard to read the tags. Just needs a good working over, when the staff takes a break from the complaining. Just before we were asked to leave, (they were so busy complaining to one another, they neglected to tell us in a professional way that their mysterious closing hour had arrived), they offered us a "newsletter" which was actually nothing more than an advertisement. No useful information in there, just advertising their patterns and special classes, which weren't all that special looking. Tossed it. I don't like the yarn store in Arlington Heights either, but at least she's antisocial with everyone equally. Skip this one unless you need something specific. read more

I received a Beginner's knitting set of 4 classes as a gift; wasn't at all enthusiastic about learning how to knit but the store impressed me: lots of beautiful yarn and finished handiwork; I started getting excited about learning this new thing. Wrong!! The teacher is so advanced and accomplished in her abilities that she has lost the ability to "teach down" to a complete blank slate like me, a person who knows squat about knitting. The classes were a hour each; after the 2nd one I left knowing I would not return. When I made mistakes--and I made LOTS of em--the instructor was fix em in a flash, maybe say, "Oh, you dropped a stitch," or some such knitspeak, and hand me back my project. Needless to say I learned NOTHING about what I was doing wrong, WHY I was doing it wrong, and how I could fix it. Very frustrating, humiliating. As a person who shares a car with her 20 yr old daughter (who more often than not has the vehicle) and is an active caregiver for her 94 year old dad, I don't have the ability to drive into town every time I make a mistake to have it get fixed. Third knitting class in the Beginner series was going to have us "learn to read knitting patterns," or some such thing and I thought, Yeah right, like that's ever gonna gel in my brain when I can't figure out why I keep "dropping stitches" and have no clue as to how I should fix them. Sorry Mosaic. For the advanced person who knows her stuff about knitting this is the place to go. For the neophyte doing this for the first time, the worst possible choice. P.S.: I do have to agree with M.D. & Heather C.'s reviews about the attitude of the staff, despite the reviews being more than a few years old. These women aren't that receptive. I felt stupid and intimidated by them. Why should I go anyplace to feel that negativity? I had enough of it growing up with an older sibling and in high school! read more

I first went to Mosaic Yarn Studio for the Chicagoland Yarn Crawl in August 2011. I was impressed with how nice the staff was. I've been back a few times since then and they're always nice and helpful. Also, the store has a large selection of yarn so it's worth making a trip from the city to check out what they have in stock. I am a crocheter and they are also crochet friendly and won't turn up their nose if you say you crochet. read more

I was a little apprehensive to go to desplaines for yarn, but I did and I didn't regret it! There is very easy parking right out front. The staff is helpful, but not pushy. There is very reasonable priced yarn in the store and and all sorts of stuff for sale in the back. This store has the largest selection of accessories that I have seen anywhere. There are fun tape measures, cutters, needles, crochet hooks and sock stretchers. There is also quite a selection of patterns and books. She carries a lot of books I have seen elsewhere. There is a large teaching room in the back. This store also has a fun newsletter that talks about store events and knitting projects for the community. read more

Not only was I not greeted with a hello, I wasn't even acknowledged until after I had been browsing for 20 minutes ...and after another woman walked in after me... When miss too busy for her britches finally asked me what I was looking for, she didn't have a clue what I was talking about ....I couldn't wait to leave & did just that....called LYS #2 & took a drive...& while they didn't have I wanted, she offered to order it for me...talked to me with a smile & went out of her way to make a phone call for me to another LYS that had what I wanted ...I will gladly drive 32 miles and 51 miles to get what I need...& deserve....but I won't be driving 6 miles to Mosaic to be treated like a "non yarn-snob"... By the way, I didn't walk out mad...but you lost an almost $200 sale... PS ....your average review went from 3 1/2 stars to 3.... read more

I've always had a pleasant experience here! I'm a bit sad that by the time I moved to Des Plaines they had already moved to Mount Prospect, but I can forgive that :) Staff has been helpful when I've had questions, the yarn selection is pretty good. I'm not a total yarn shop snob, but they had Malabrigo when I went in looking for it specifically a while back, and I left happy! read more

I traveled from wis to this shop because of the reviews. Unlike other shops I found the staff wonderful, helpful and patient..I am a new knitter and I know they probably have been asked the same questions over and over again but they still took a lot of time to make sure I knew the answers. Would I go back yes without a second thought. There is another shop close to this one with such bad reviews I would never travel there. If I lived closer I would be there just to hang out with other knitters.. read more

Mrs.J I think you have the wrong studio! The store can be swamped and you walk in and someone always says hello, sometimes it is even other shoppers who help each other. If someone wasn't helping you it's because you told them you just wanted to browse. If you truly feel there was a problem why didn't you ask for help. Your review sounds more like you didn't know what you were talking about, seems like it's you not them. I always end up back at MYS because they are so friendly and always willing to go the extra mile for anyone and everyone that comes in with any kind help needed. This is my go to knitting store!!!! The staff is so helpful and nice!!!! I need the help!!! They have open knitting hours and knitting classes I go to both!!!! I love the yarn selection. I have found a number of useful things at this store. It has a fairly good selection of patterns and some really lovely yarns, though they are pricey. If you're looking for something special, you could probably find it here. They offer a lot of classes and community-building events if you are in to that sort of thing. That said, the criticisms of the staff in some of the other reviews is fairly accurate. Unless you're one of their regulars, they act as though it is an imposition to wait on you. Not as unfriendly and insular as the little old ladies in Wheaton, but getting close. I'd actually give them 3.5 stars if it was allowed. read more
