In the book, Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell speaks about working 10,000 hours in one's craft, in order to be deemed an expert. Some folks are disputing this but think about it, do you want the pilot of your plane on your trans-Pacific flight with 100 hours of flight experience?? Or do you want the person with 10,000 hours?? Speaking of pilots, the pilot light in my gas fireplace kept going out and it kept going out when outside temperatures went below 25F. That's right, it went out when you needed it most. So after firing up the pilot light manually for seemingly over two Winters, I said to myself, this is insanity. So I used Yelp to conduct a comparative analysis and called four fireplace companies. Here were the outcomes of those calls: - one company does not fix gas fireplaces. - the second company made me leave a message and it took the guy like 3 days to call back and he had an attitude like he was disgruntled from the get-go (meaning from the onset). - the third company wanted to charge a service call for diagnosing the problem and couldn't comment on the overall costs. - the fourth company was Hearth & Home and Pat (who turned out to be the owner) was a straight shooter (meaning forthcoming with details). Pat asked the year, make, model, serial number of my gas fireplace. He listened to me about my fireplace's symptoms and gave me a likely diagnosis and projected costs of the part and service. I had a very good feeling about his Integrity and thought the cost was reasonable. The appointment was booked and weeks later, Mike came as scheduled. Mike has 10 years experience and although he huffed and puffed here and there while fixing it, I had no doubt that with his expertise (10,000 hours) we would be up and running in no time. Mike came and removed our oak logs, and cleaned the fire bed. He cleaned all the 8 logs, set a new bed of embers, rearranged the logs and finished cleaning the fire box. Highly recommend Hearth & Home! We were working with a separate contractor to remodel our basement, but purchased a gas insert from H&H and hired them for installation as well. Tom was great in the showroom and on the purchasing end; he told us all about our different options, was very knowledgeable, and was quick to call back and get our project on their schedule. On installation day we hit a pretty major hiccup (no fault of H&H) in that we had a blockage in our chimney so the liner could not be inserted. Whereas our contractor basically left us high and dry to figure things out, H&H helped us brainstorm solutions and referred us to an awesome mason to fix the problem. Ryan was great on the installation end. He worked with our mason to get back to our house on specific day to be sure they were able to get the liner in while the chimney was opened up and then again got us on the schedule in a timely fashion to finish the project. In addition to purchasing a fireplace insert, we also ended up purchasing some beautiful stacked stone from them for a separate project. You can see the stone in their showroom along their main counter. Everything went seamlessly with that as well. The only draw back is sometimes it takes a while to be helped and they have to write up an invoice for every purchase. The large outlet has everything you can think of when it comes to fire. The selection of both wood and gas powered fireplaces is second to none. If I was ever in the market for one this would be my first place to look. I shop there for their barbecue equipment. They offer a wide selection of Big Green Egg, Solaire and Green Mountain grills. They also have all the accessories and toys to make grilling even more enjoyable. I have stopped there a few times for lump charcoal, but prices are a bit high compared to other similar shops. They also have all sorts of outdoor patio equipment that you won't find at the big box stores. We recently replaced our big box store patio furniture with a patio set from Hearth & Home. We absolutely love it!! Previously we would replace our patio furniture every 3-5 years because it just didn't hold up very well. This set will last forever and we are confident that we won't need to purchase another set. We went with the Berlin Gardens Comfoback Swivel Rockers, which are extremely comfortable, and a Garden Classic dining height table. We also purchased two rectangle end tables and a canvas umbrella (love the jockey red!!). This furniture is the most durable and comfortable patio furniture that we've ever seen.
