I used to buy clothes that made me look thin, now I buy clothes that I can hide my fat under. Operation: Don't become my Mother has been compromised. Maybe I'm just getting older, which still isn't the greatest feeling but it's a slight cut above just getting fatter. so anyway, I found myself in the area and remembered that my girl, Nicole W, had written a shiny, happy, glowing review of A La Mode and that I needed to do a little bit of first-hand research on a shopping local for the holidays piece I've been working on. Walking in and seeing all the muted colors and statement accessories with gemstones immediately made me think I may be shopping a little above my age-range, but as I took a closer look I realized that it wasn't that the clothing was older, it was that it was more sophisticated than I'm used to, but I still liked it, and I'd bet my kind of boring mom and super hip aunt, young, skinny, perfect cousin and her beautiful three year-old daughter would also find a cornucopia of items worth coveting as well. It appeared as though I'd just stumble upon the perfect, shop for gifting something unique to just about every female in my family tree. I was particularly big fan of this purple/red/navy button-up blouse thing that was loose-fitting (euphemism for 'fat-hiding') and was nominally priced for only $34. If I had to describe the feel of A La Mode, I'd start by referencing Francesca's Collections (the shop, not the restaurants) but A La Mode has more jewelry and of a bit better quality (nothing stretchy rings) and less clothing that's more cozy and classic, less flashy and trendy, and also a bit more reasonably priced. I didn't end up buying the blouse because I'm trying out this new thing called 'saving monies', but I did tell myself that I could think it over, and if I still had that blouse on my mind next week, I was allowed to buy it. Plus it was something I could categorize at business-casual so it's kind of like an investment in my career, right? Right? Okay, I just really want the damn thing and I'm willing to work any angle to justify it. Is that so wrong?

Yep - I'll concur with Helena B...Upstairs is adorably random. If you seek a cornucopia of gifty,…read morecute-ish items, Upstairs Boutique is your jam. The store is owned by a lovely lady who curates goods from all over. I was especially a fan of the leather cuffs accented by metal rings and the completely over the top cute stitched change purses with random sayings plastered on them. At $5 a piece, these precious little change purses are the perfect on-hand gift. My personal fave it the red and goldenrod circus-esque option that says Boss Lady on one side and "Show Em The Bacon That Yer Makin" on the other. Beyond those goodies, Upstairs Boutique has a small selection of clothing and a baby/kids area near the back. If you're feeling gifty, drop by Upstairs Boutique.

I purchased an item at the shop a few years ago, and after getting the thumbs down from my daughter, I returned it, only to be handed a useless piece of paper--a store credit. I am very good about recalling details and do not remember receiving verbal notice about "store credit only returns" nor do I recall being told the store credit is only good for one year. I just literally handed that woman $55 for absolutely nothing while being forced to honor her shoddy business practices. In this day and age with wonderful selections and store policies, elsewhere, I don't see how she continues this narrow and unethical business practice. Her clothing/gift selection is certainly nothing special, so you'd be wiser, in this case, to not shop local.

First when they were on Northwest Highway and now at their location on Campbell Street. The same ownership opened a sister store a few doors down on Campbell called Charisma. A La Mode is still great, but I have found so many gifts for her at Charisma because I think it caters more towards a mature woman (trying to be PC here). My most recent experience was a Christmas gift for my wife. The store was locked, but I knew A La Mode was related, so I went in and asked for help. As has happened in the past, they cheerfully opened it and helped me with my task. I have often dealt with the daughter and she has great taste and an enthusiastic customer service spirit. I described what I was looking for and she had a few suggestions, but nothing hit. I noticed a display and she found the size I was looking for and it was an instance success. She even said the blue would work well with my wife's eyes. (so cool she remembers her). My wife says I never have given her a gift from Charisma that she hasn't loved, and this was no exception. In a time where we are click happy to quickly make a purchase and have it delivered to our home, it's such a good feeling to have special attention, someone to bounce ideas off of and have more of a value added experience through great customer service. If you're a guy, don't be intimidated because they will listen and help. Even if your wife's eyes are brown.

I went into Annie's Resale for the World yesterday not knowing anything more than they were a resale shop. It turns out that their profits go to several charities around the globe educating children, providing food, shelter and emergency relief to families, and strengthening local churches and community programs. A section in the shop is dedicated to photos, books & explanations of the various causes they are supporting. I walked in and Annie greeted me instantly. She was so warm & kind to me and everyone that came through. One gentlemen came in wanting to do consignment and although they don't do that, she was so helpful to him in directing him to another spot. She let me pick a coupon out of a bowl and I got 20% off my order, plus she gave me a 10% off for my next visit. I heard her explain the shop's mission to several people, including myself. They've been open just 10 months and she said the community has been great with supporting them and giving donations. She didn't realize what hard work it is to run a retail store...but I'm sure it more than pays off in the end! I must say they have some great merchandise and it's SO well priced. The selection was very well organized, very clean, tons of brand new items and the prices are just fantastic. I saw a ton of cute earrings for $2 including many new pairs. I found a really cute fall dress for $13 that is in new condition. She was telling me that the donator brought in 6 of the exact same dress and this was the last one - Score! Baby clothes were just $1 each. Their dressing rooms are much nicer than any I've seen in any retail store, let alone a thrift shop. Beautiful curtains on the doors and nice seats inside, beautiful mirrors and decor. I was shocked when I went in to try on my dress! Anyone going to this small shop can be confident they are getting a great price, clean & well worth it merchandise and you should feel warm & fuzzy inside knowing you've helped in some tiny way. Annie's Resale for the World is just across the street from me so I see myself popping in here quite a bit! You can also volunteer here a few hours each week!

You can't tell much from the outside, but inside, you discover the heart of this organization. Yelp needs to know about this place!! This is not Goodwill. It's not a large store filled with tons of kitschy and mediocre clothes. Nothing is broken. There are no holes. There are no disinterested employees. It is small. It is cute. It is a little pricier than typical resale stores. It is hit or miss. But it is amazing. The clothes are high-quality. Books and media are in great shape. The jewelry is exquisite. The staff is so friendly and attentive. And they have dressing rooms! Beautiful dressing rooms with cute curtains and little lamps. And purple! Lots of purple. The thing that really sets this place apart from other resale shops are the partners -- people on missions all over the world. When the items within the shop are sold, the proceeds are donated to different partners across the globe: leaders that are educating children, providing food, shelter, and relief to families, and strengthening local churches and community programs. So if you really want to give back to the community, I mean REALLY give back -- to the world, consider stopping here for some of your purchases or donations.
