Service was friendly and the food was excellent. The Reuben is a thick hot pastrami on grilled Jewish rye with Swiss, sauerkraut, and Thousand Island. The Tahoe Blue is a hot albacore tuna melt on grilled sourdough with cheddar. Both came with a side as advertised, salad on my plate and fries on my wife's with Ranch dressing to dip the fries in. Portions were generous and the bread is amazing and baked in-house daily. The bakery case is one of many reasons to come back....! Coffee cakes, croissants, cookies, fruit tarts, and packaged loaves were all out and labeled. We bought croissants and cookies to take back to camp and they traveled (and ate) well....! The one real drawback is the building. The bakery and restaurant share a door with C.O.D. Casino next door. When that door opens, cigarette smoke comes into the dining and bakery area. The restroom is also on the casino side. That does not change the quality of the sandwiches or pastry, but it is noticeable and it is worth knowing before you sit down, especially if you are sensitive to smoke or bringing food out for a trip. Note: they do have outdoor seating. We love having this place close to home and will use it again for lunch and bakery takeout for sure! It reminds me a little bit of Virginia City, only without the bars, casinos, old-time photo shops, and camel races. Genoa is the oldest town in Nevada, founded in 1851 as a Mormon trading post. Mormon Station State Park has replicas of some of the original buildings, and there are other historic buildings in town as well. however, Genoa feels more like a small ranching town rather than a big movie set. Tucked into this cute little town, is the Sierra chef. They do a lot. They do catering, they do cooking classes and it's a good old-fashioned Italian deli, also. Lots of Italian foods, and also grocery items, that you can buy. They have meats and cheeses, imported olive oils , sauces, and pastas. Amazing pastries. Gelato. They even carry. Illy coffee, which is a very high-quality coffee. Everybody in the store was so nice. For my lunch order, I was helped by Lori, and she was also very friendly and helpful. I decided to have the Porchetta sandwich, and it was amazing. Wonderfully seasoned pork, cut into thin strips. It was rich, savory, and had an amazing "porky" flavor. I could smell it as soon as it was brought out to my table. It was on a wonderful bread that was crusty on the outside, and soft and pillowy on the inside. , the cheese was creamy, , and the veggies were just absolutely amazing. One of the best sandwiches I have had in a long time. To drink, I had a cherry lime, Italian cream soda. I could taste both the cherry and the lime, I loved the creaminess of it, and there was just enough of a soda water that I could get the carbonation. For dessert, I had a cannoli. The shell was perfect, the ricotta in the middle was wonderfully rich, and I had chocolate chips on one end, and pistachios on the other. Again, totally top-notch. I took home a jar of imported puttanesca sauce, and it was just as great. The tomatoes had just had a rough chop, I could taste the brine from the capers, I could taste the olives, everything in it made it one of the best sauces that I have had in a long, long time. I live in the Sacramento area, so I'm going to have to see if I can find that sauce locally. It was that good. I love Schat's Bakery and have always enjoyed their products, so this review is specifically about…read morecustomer service, not the food. I stopped in to purchase a coffee cake to take to someone. I was helped by a woman who, from the moment I approached the counter, never looked at me or acknowledged me. She continued talking to a coworker, with her head turned away from me the entire time. At one point, the coworker even came over to show her something on her personal phone, and the conversation continued. She eventually bagged my coffee cake without saying a word, still never making eye contact, and handed it to me. I actually had to lean toward her until she finally looked at me. I said, "Thank you," and walked away. I completely understand that working with the public can be challenging, and everyone has bad days. But this was more than just being having a bad day--it was zero effort to acknowledge or interact with a customer. Schat's is a place I really like, which is why this experience was so disappointing. If you're going to work in a customer-facing position, please make an effort to be courteous, acknowledge your customers, and provide at least the basic level of customer service they deserve.

The bagel sandwiches were just as good as I remembered, but the coffee was just okay. The flavor was a little dull and tasted more like cream and sugar than coffee. The shop is still nice and clean, but it doesn't feel like the cozy place I usually look for in a small coffee shop. I'm definitely bummed because I visit this area from SoCal often, and this used to be one of my favorite spots.
