    Apple Fritter / Cherry Burrito
    Craig H.

Stopped by to just get a few donuts in the early afternoon on a Sunday. I'm a apple fritter nut, and always judge a donut shop based upon the fritter. So, I ordered one of those. I also like when a shop comes up with something out of the box...so, I ordered one of the cherry burritos. The Apple Fritter was perfect, nice crunch around the outside, great flavor and cake in the middle. The burrito was very tasty as well, pastry dough stuffed/folded like a burrito then fried and glazed. I have not tried the other donut shop in Carson, but, it will be hard to beat Carson Donuts.

4/8/2023 Out for a nice Saturday drive.. Finally made it when they were open..nice and full display of donuts.. Picked up the glazed twist and an interesting apple burrito.. Glazed twist was nice and fluffy, not too sweet.. Apple burrito was good to try but a tad to sweet. Glad to stop and will again in the future!

I wanted to grab something fun for breakfast & found this gem in the area I was in. Carson Donuts is hidden, but not dead. On an early Thursday morning (5-6am), there were constant customers. I can tell why! The doughnuts were delicious and the owner/worker was so kind. She greeted us, patiently waited while we browsed the variety of doughnuts since it was our first time, & boxed up our doughnuts nicely. The place is very small, but homey. On the walls are pictures of their kids and doughnuts, like a cute photoshop.

The hours of the Stateline location are a little hit or miss so seeing this one pop up on yelp made it to logical stop. We strolled in later in the afternoon and found a case with a decent selection of donuts which included a few of the mochi variety. The kids were all hyped to get them, but then they saw the cleverly decorated donuts in the case, and immediately changed their minds in favor of those sporting the sugary icing and candy toppings! It's summer so I'm saying yes to everything and one child was enjoying a bright blue shark attack doughnut while the other had a deep and Rich chocolatey s'mores donut. Both of them were in hog heaven, and didn't look up from their plates until only crumbs remained. All of that said, I'm not sure this is a remarkable donut shop so just expect the basics and expect those basics to be done well. This is the reason for three stars over four or five. It's not really an experience in the selection isn't anything truly truly unique. There's nothing really special to the shop though there is a cute little wall mural to snap some photos with. Parking is super simple in the large lot and there's a good amount of space inside if you do want to sit and enjoy your donut. Staff was super friendly and helpful too. It's clear this is a family run operation and they have a lot of regard for their customers. This is a great stop. If you wanna bring back a little treat to those at the hotel or house nearby. Who doesn't enjoy a doughnut?

Their incredibly knowledgeable team operates with stellar performance that people completely take for granted, never mind a few peevish one-star reviews which bear no relation whatsoever to the professionalism benefiting the Carson community. These outstanding individuals assist hundreds of people every week and simply don't get enough credit for how much they have done right, making the difference nobody sees-- they are like front-end phantoms you might not even notice on a busy day- which seems to be every day! We got a chocolate croissant (only decent thing I got, but don't compare it to an artisanal made croissant where it's a dark golden brown with flaky crispy buttery layers). Their "croissants" are more like anemic, soft, moist bread. Also, got a cheese Danish. Starbucks sells a better cheese Danish than this place. The Danish was dry and hard and the center filling looked like it was pre-made frozen and just placed on top of the Danish. Finally, the worst of the worst, I got a personal size dutch apple crumble pie. Now THIS looked like it was made from scratch and I had hopes for this one. However, I took a piece of the crumble topping and ate it. It had an unusual funny taste. Almost like it was made with lavender. Didn't taste quite right. Then, when I got back to my hotel, I really dug into it. It wasn't just the crumble that was off, but the entire pie tasted of rancid spoiled butter. I had to spit it out, it was horrible. I can't believe they would serve that. I don't know how old that thing was, but they need better quality control. The only people I could see giving this place 5 stars on the food, are locals. Tahoe is behind when it comes to quality high end artisanal pastries. I have yet to find a decent coffee shop. Their sign boasts "Voted Best in Tahoe", but you'll see that almost every spot here has the same sign, from ice cream shops to bakeries to whatever else because there's literally nothing here. Not much to choose from, but they did have the lemon meringue that everyone was raving about and two kinds of apple pie. Over two hours until closing at 5pm on Saturday and the chairs were already flipped over on the tables as if they were closing/cleaning. The lady packed our order to go without asking, so I guess that was also a hint to not stick around. Onto the pie: it sure looked nice, but one bite was all I needed. I did take a second bite just to make sure my taste buds weren't playing tricks on me. The meringue was gummy, the crust was soggy. The lemon filling was ok, but did not compensate for the top and the bottom being almost inedible. I don't know if it was old, just bad, or both. This was honestly one of the worst lemon meringue pies I've ever had. We would have been better off getting a pie at the grocery store. We didn't dig into the apple pie yet, but after the lemon meringue, I don't have high hopes.
