What a lovely find! I had never been to Genoa and it had been years since my husband visited so we decided to take a drive there when we were in the area. The town is absolutely charming but what caught my attention was Sierra Chef. We made our way to the door and I was immediately in heaven as we entered the building. The store was filled with amazing Italian food items including pastas, sauces, and cheeses. There were chef prepared dinners for you to order to take home. Italian pastries and gelato tempted us. I gave in and ordered a pistachio gelato which was divine. My husband ordered a cookie and espresso which he said was perfectly prepared. I wish we would have had more time at Sierra Chef because we would have ordered more food items to try. The next time we are in the area, we will be making a stop to pick up some tasty treats! read more

Sierra Chef - Made In Nevada [Genoa NV] I followed the garlicky smell of the savory prosciutto flatbread and our noses led us here at this Italian bakery called Sierra Chef. The minute we walked inside the smell of baked pastries, cookies, and sweet & savory treats permeated the store. Ahhhh... Sierra Chef also offers cooking classes for adults and children in their commercial kitchen. Saw a few ladies behind the counter taking the class and having fun at the same time while I perused through the items offered... some fun handcrafted kitchen items laid out on the back table. We were just looking for dessert since we already had brunch across the street at the Flutter & Buzz Cafe. I asked for gelato and chose dark chocolate flavor. Waited while the employee went towards the back to scoop our ice creams. I had no idea how huge the servings were when she handed the cups to me. I should've just asked for one cup to share. HOLY CANNOLI! Growing up back east in the midst of Italian families, I came to really enjoy a good Cannoli. I have to say these are some of the best I have had on the west coast. Filled fresh to order (this is key so the are not soggy) dipped in Pistachios on one side and chocolate chips on the other. I had my first on a Friday afternoon and was back for more on Sunday. We had the most incredible cooking class experience! I planned a private class for my girl friend's birthday and the owner, Cynthia, worked with me closely to coordinate a date and time that worked with everyone's schedules. From the moment we arrived, everything was thoughtfully set up--from the beautiful mocktails to the charcuterie board. Cynthia guided our large group through a four-course Italian meal that was not only delicious but so fun to make together. It felt relaxed, welcoming, and perfectly paced, even with a big group of friends. Cynthia had a way of being easy going, while also helping us stay on track and explaining everything as we cooked. Last month, my husband bought me a private cooking class for our anniversary. We went a couple of weeks ago, and it was one of the best dates I have ever been on. We learned how to make lobster ravioli together, shared some wine, appetizers, and dessert. Everything was beautiful and delicious! We also went home with TONS of leftovers. Cynthia is obviously passionate about cooking and her business. You could see a sparkle in her eyes when she talked, and her love for what she does was contagious! Scrumptious Italian baked goods with quality ingredients! I stopped by after a long hike in Genoa after reading good things in edible Reno. A very cute but small shop that we almost missed. The cannolis are not prefilled but filled upon ordering and topped with pistachios and chocolate chips. Very light and crunchy and the perfect sweetness level. I also got this pear cherry dessert that was a cross between a tart and a danish. So delish! The whole pear was soft and tender and not too sweet. The cream was thick and yummy. You can tell everything is handmade because there's not a bunch sitting out on display only 2-3 items of each dessert. Wonderful little discovery! read more

I am writing this with mixed thoughts as I wanted to support local. I have taken cooking classes here and it seemed lovely. So when I was hosting a small holiday party for 30 woman I reached out. It took numerous emails, then numerous calls to get an appetizer order placed. I paid in full. This was done 2 months in advance but no email receipt. Fast Forward to 2 days prior to event and I called to confirm. A young lady answered who didn't seem to know anything about it. Cynthia the owner got on the phone and said she recalls the order but it was probably at home. We went over 4-5 appetizers and she took down my address and phone number again. We confirmed a 4pm delivery. 4:10 no delivery, 4:20 no delivery, 4:45 I call again and get sent to VM 10xs. Finally someone answers and I had to suggest they call their driver since I was 8 miles from them. Meanwhile, I have guests arriving and no food out. Yep, I was heated by now and was told the Owner was gone for the day. The driver was lost and on the other side of Carson with a wrong address and phone number. When she did arrive she handed the platters to my guests to bring in vs bring them in all herself. First off there was a huge charcuterie board I did not order and had already made one. Second not all the apps I ordered were there. About 10 minute later the driver comes back stating she forgot an app and hands the plate to a guest!! Meanwhile the hot apps are now stone cold and one is salmon and another chicken. Next day I return the platter to Sierra and the owner is inside. Not a single employee welcomes me in or says where to put the platters. THIS is the most bizarre interaction I have ever had with an Owner who is engrained in a community. It was thoroughly disappointing that at no point did Cynthia consider the failure on her business (we are business owners), offer an apology or show any concern for their continued errors. She was well aware the order was 45 min plus late and zero concern. I am simply writing this so that anyone else considering a small catering job reconsider. We host often and many of my guests host often...although I heard good feedback on the food that wasn't stone cold I simply can't recommend this business until something changes. I wish them well and hope the owner understands accountability and accepts it vs blaming a customer who paid for her service. read more

My 12 year old granddaughter was visiting from WA. We wanted to get some ice cream. Since The Country Store is no longer, we decided to try Sierra Chef. They don't have ice cream, they have Gelato Sorbetto. That was fine. I've had it before. I was handed this little 4 oz cup with probably 1.5 oz's of Sorbet! I looked at it in disbelief and I said, "Is that all?" The gal asked if I wanted more, and I said, "Well, yes!!" She gave me another 1/2 oz! While the other gal told me that Sorbet "is expensive." Expensive it was. About $7.00 an ounce! It maybe filled up a quarter of the small cup. Nothing like what the picture shows at their business, which is overflowing! It was yummy, but I will never go back! I wish I had taken a picture. Update: The owner sent me a DM and completely lied about the incident! She said, I asked the order to be split, which is not true at all! She said I was "rude and demanding!" Another lie. I was calm and just surprised how little sorbet was in my cup. My 12 year old granddaughter was with me. I would never act the way the owner says I did with or without my granddaughter there. I am not a "Karen!" She said she has me on camera. Please post that. I dare you!! It will show that YOU are a liar! I will never shop this establishment again or bring ANY friends/family visiting to it. I do not lie, and I do not tolerate liars. read more

Had a celebration of life catered by them and was very disappointed with the quality of the food. Cold pulled pork sandwiches that I had to warm up soft crust for bruschetta that I had to warm up, forgot plates and cups and when they came, they were compostable Brown Picnic plates. when I walk in, I'm immediately greeted by this manager/owner Cynthia. She approached me with rudeness and wasn't respectful towards me at all number one. I am the one paying your guys electric bill so why are you gonna be a brat. I've also noticed how she treats her employees like crap Melissa for example, was getting screamed at for simply not knowing why the espresso machine was broken it's not her fault that it broke maybe if she paid the money and got good espresso machines this wouldn't happen. if I can get this place negative stars I would just because the management is horrible. This bakery is very charming, however we were disappointed with the pastry that we got. The blueberry parma tasted like the fridge which is an indication that it's been sitting in the display case for a while. If you did not know you can have Sierra Chef cater your events! They did a spectacular job catering for my baby shower and man the food is always out of this world! There are a variety of options for anyone on your guest list and you can see the love they have for their creations. What is also incredible is the amazing service. The shower happened to be on a weekend where there was smoke from a California fire hitting us and we were worried about the impacts because the shower was initially going to be held outdoors. Well the owner Cynthia was already on top of it, made a call, and we were easily switched to an indoor venue in Genoa! read more

A fantastic place to stop after an adventure to or through Genoa. I visited on a Friday morning after practice running and scoping out some RTO (Reno Tahoe Odyssey) legs. The sign for cannoli spoke to my heart, and I loved getting to watch the friendly staffmember fill it right then and there. They sell good coffee, too. When I came in, all the ladies making things on the "back" side of the store welcomed me. The patio area is shaded and well maintained. I do not like lamb! It is way too gamey in my opinion. That is, u til hubby and I took the lamb lollipop class at Sierra Chef with Cynthia. She used New Zealand lamb and taught us how to properly "French" the racks of loin and put a delicious crust on them. OMG. DELICIOUS!!! We love her cooking classes- can't get enough of them! I recently took a Sushi Making and Saki Tasting class at Sierra Chef. It was fun, informative and a good value. I learned where to locally procure common sushi ingredients; how to combine ingredients to create flavorful and visually pleasing rolls as well as functional rolling and slicing techniques. I tasted several brands and flavors of saki to determine which paired well with my rolls and palate. I am going to use this experience to host my own hands-on sushi making party for friends.
