    I've rented from PMI at two different complexes, they nickel & dime you just to make extra money…read more They charge fees for paying your rent online, no matter the method used. I was also charged at move out for a full paint job when I didn't even put anything on the walls. I don't believe that is honest or fair. This gives PMI access to every single cent in the account, either to use for their own profit or to sell to others who want your money. Under California law, it is illegal for a landlord or property manager to require your bank account username and password. This practice is a severe violation of both consumer privacy protections and state housing laws. Why It Is Illegal The CCPA (California Consumer Privacy Act): California law specifically prohibits landlords and third-party screening services from requiring access to your "sensitive private information". This explicitly defines account log-ins and passwords as protected data that cannot be demanded as a condition for housing. Third-Party Access Violations: Handing over your login credentials to a landlord or their software provider generally violates your bank's terms of service. Doing so can void your fraud protection guarantees if your account is compromised. from stealing sensitive information.
