The reeking smell of cat urine welcomes you as you descend the stairs, and making you think what you're getting yourself in to. Tim himself is very nice, soft spoken, gentle, and a kind elderly man. If you are in need of REAL work, this isn't the place you should go. I am happy overall with the work I had done, but I certainly will not be coming back here again. Tim is amazing! I called on a Friday afternoon and was able to be seen same-day to have my bridesmaid dress taken in and shortened. Tim himself is wonderful - he is so kind and responsive, and he even ironed my dress for me to show me how good it would look after being pressed. The whole thing took about ten days. I simply adore his results. All in all, cost was $35, which was quite reasonable compared to what I expected. When I picked up my dress, he invited me to call him with any questions I might have. This tailor is a well hidden gem in plain sight. In fact, I added them to Yelp, as they weren't even on the radar. The "shop" is hard to find, and is found only with a little sign taped to a graffiti-ed door that says "Tailor". It is located on Bedford Avenue between N 5th Street and N 6th Streets, to the right of the restaurant Wild Ginger and to the left of that perpetually closed restaurant next door (wtf, anyway?). You might want to call for an appointment to make sure someone will be there, but I've also just come and called once I got here. When you arrive, ring the bell or call. Someone has to come down and let you in, and walk you up several flights of stairs to the top floor. The tailoring "shop" is in a tiny, well-equipped room off the kitchen. The wife takes the measurements when Tim is not there, and when he is there, sometimes they will argue about the price in Chinese. The young artist daughter will translate anything important for you when she is there, and call her parents "cute" when they argue. Tim does speak some English, however. I took Tim a simple job of several pairs of pants to have shortened ($12 each), and a more technical job, which was a dress that I wanted the cuffs lengthened on and added to (can't remember the price but it was very reasonable for the amount of work). He did a fantastic job on all of these, especially my dress! Just took another huge pile to him recently, too. Another good job. I absolutely adore the work Tim does! I've been in countless weddings and had lots of major events in the past few years. At first glance, Tim's garden-level location raised my suburban eyebrow, but his work and prices can't be beat! I moved to Staten Island and STILL cross the bridge to visit Tim. This is long overdue. Last summer I was a bridesmaid in a friend's wedding. I ordered a dress online. I completely missed the mark with the sizes and then the dress arrived I was practically swimming in it. With only a few weeks to go I began to panic. This review is really to counter Dan B.'s review... the guy seems to have joined Yelp simply to teach "Tim's Tailor" a lesson in western phone etiquette? I would agree with Dan that 2-way active communication is key when conducting business in the West. At the same time, Tim's business is run by a first-generation Asian family. They have totally different customs than we do, especially in business. Before you get into the whole "immigrants should assimilate" argument- Tim's been in this building for 22 years and I'm willing to wager he's been here at least 10 years longer than your stay in Williamsburg. They had a storefront for 8 years and for the last 7 years he's been working out of his apartment, right upstairs. He was incredibly cordial and warm when I arrived and agreed to do a rush job for a fraction of what others were going to charge me. If you slow down enough, this is the sort of guy you can connect with and share a moment with. Yes, his daughter did pick up the phone and I kept the convo going by asking how she was doing- and the "dead air" was no longer dead. Dan could try that next time? BIG thumbs up to a local business that's doing its best to keep going despite a rapidly changing environment. I'm going back- what a quirky awesome and top notch NY experience. I came to Tim to tailor my prom dress and graduation dress. He was very honest and told me that he did not have the necessary equipment or time for such a large dress in just a week and did not want to ruin it. However, he did an amazing job hemming my graduation dress. My only complaint would be the pricing since it was kind of expensive. But other than that I highly recommend him. read more

I've been going here since they had the storefront in Williamsburg which closed back in 2005 or 2006. I've had both Tim and his wife work on my clothes and they have done some things I didn't think were possible. They shortened the sleeves of a Thom Browne flannel and their work was indistinguishable even on close inspection. They took in some Helmut Lang tuxedo pants and they both look and feel better than they did before. The work is totally invisible. Also! They repair crotch holes in your expensive denim for a reasonable price. I've been charged $60 in Greenpoint for this recently and I think they charge about half that. I remember his daughter once told me that Tim's specialty is apparently men's tailoring, especially trousers. Everything they've done for me over the years has been perfect. I've only been here once, so I can only vouch from my own experience, but I'm surprised by the really high reviews. I had two sports jackets "brought in" by Tim, which he quoted me at $45 each. It sounded a bit high to me, but seeing as I was already there and wasn't sure where else to go, I paid the deposit and left. His wife told me it would take 10 days but after two weeks of not hearing from them, I finally called. They said they were ready and I could come in. Tim did a good job, but for what seems to be a fairly typical procedure (brining in the torso) I thought the price was a little steep. And they made no apology or offered to drop the price even $5 for forgetting to contact me. read more

Dan B.: you're a self-righteous asshole. This shop is the apartment of an elderly couple from Guangdong that does local jobs on the side, in the free time from their full-time jobs. They moved here a few decades ago, before Williamsburg became the capital of the city's nouveau riche. In other words, they weren't being curt to you, they just don't speak a lot of English. I had to laugh. I called just now and asked if they had any appointments today, a woman gave a drawn out "no". I asked if this was the tailor shop thinking I had the wrong number, she said "yea" I paused waiting for her to give me options, but out of the awkward silence I said "ok, well...thanks" and hung up. I want to write this review hoping this shop reads it. You guys may be fantastic tailors and wonderful people, but I'm a new customer whose tailor shop just closed and am looking to transfer my business to a new one and you answered the call without any business sense whatsoever. I would encourage you to treat all calls as potentially new customers and show effort to gain them. "Can you come in tomorrow or sometime next week?" I had to have a dress shortened for an event and thought I would give Tim a try... and it worked out well! I must admit, I was a little nervous walking up the stairs to what turned out to be an apartment that smelled a little off. However they were professional, or as professional as you can get in a scary apartment, and did great work! MAGIC WORKER. A strap broke on my romper (while I was wearing it!) and a quick google "tailor" search led me to this hidden wonder. It's obscure - a door to their apartment rather than a storefront. The strap was very thin and had to be sewn on precisely and delicately to still function as adjustable. It was tedious and a huge nuisance to fit the strap back into the small adjuster, but Tim's wife did it. She sewed it EXACTLY as the other one - making sure it was faced out correctly, and that the strap was straight and even. I asked how much and she replied NO CHARGE. I tipped $5 and left knowingly assured I wouldn't be surprise flashing anyone else asides from the two (happy) guys who had been sitting next to me at brunch. read more

Went to Tim's for the first time after reading a handful of good reviews. Although Tim's pricing is slightly more than other tailors in the area, he does really good work and provides a great service. He spent a good amount of time with me and advising me on how to wear the suit, what to wear it with, and how the fitment should be on me. I needed the suit in less than a week, and he got it done for me within a few days. Highly recommended and worth the money. read more

Tim was very nice and gave me a good price. $20 each to bring in the waist on two pairs of suit pants. He apparently runs the shop out of his apartment, so it's a little unorthodox, but he did a good job. I dropped them off on Saturday and picked them up a week later. The good thing about Tim is you're dealing with a person who seems to take pride in his work, and you know who you are dealing with. I love this tailor! He has copied many items of my clothing to perfection and altered a bunch of others exactly as requested. I recommended them to everyone without hesitation. The Williamsburg location is closed but they have moved to Bay Ridge - just call the same number (718 782 5598) to get the address (I think it's 328 91st Street). This is a real Mom and Pop operation working right out of their tiny, cluttered home kitchen but they do great work and are lovely, courteous, respectful people - that work 7 days a week till all hours. It's true, phone conversations can be difficult - they are an older Vietnamese couple so English isn't their first language - but you get past it! read more
