When a modern lady moves to a new town, there are 4 new people she must find immediately…read more Hairdresser, pharmacist, pizza-place and--most importantly of all--a good jeweller. I found Morris because I had a really thin gold chain that had knotted up.
Let me put this bluntly. Morris isn't just the best guy in Fairfield county, it's quite possible he's the best I've met period. Yes, he unknotted my necklace--for FREE--but that was a happy coincidence that ended me up in NYC Jewelers. Morris--who is so kind and patient--has an AMAZING collection of estate jewelry that he himself buys at auctions & estate sales. The pieces are unique--an incredibly refreshing change from the corporate glut of Tiffany's, Zales and the Vera Wang Collection of wherever. Art Deco, fifties retro, and some precious stones that will make your jaw hit the floor.
I have stopped by Morris' store on several occasions to feast my eyes on the baubles in front of me and the kid-in-the-candy-store comes out! I ask a thousand questions and try on a bunch of stuff. He patiently lets me try on whatever I want, even if I don't look like the kind of girl who has the cash to buy a particular piece. (Unemployment has its drawbacks kids.) Since he gets new pieces in regularly, each trip is a new visit to Candyland for me.
About two months ago after a really lousy day, I almost bought a lovely diamond and sapphire bracelet set in white gold just to make the day nicer. As Morris was writing out the receipt, I was overcome with guilt for putting it on my credit card and backed out. Morris was more than fine with it, said he completely understood. No smug comments like you'd get elsewhere. He is not a pushy salesman like every other person who works in every other store in Westport. (Talking to you, ladies at Blue Mercury!)
When Christmas rolled around, I sent my husband to see Morris. Now my better half is not a big spender by any means, but he struck a deal and I received a lovely set of two-carat sapphire earrings, set in gold and accented with diamonds. It was love at first sparkle! Good job Morris!
Last Friday I popped in--I had cash money, it was my birthday--and that beautiful bracelet was still there! Yes, this time I bought it and Morris gave me an even better price than two months ago. He even threw in a set of aquamarine studs set in gold for free. Curious, I took the bracelet to be looked at by another jeweller. He appraised it at more than double what I'd paid! (And let me tell you what I could have gotten at Tiffany's for that money. Silver. Those tchotchke silver trinkets they peddle. Ick.)
Morris, you're the man! He had about ten other pieces with which I am now currently smitten. You'll see them in the photos I'll attach. If you are buying your jewelry somewhere else, then you are just short-changing yourself. Morris is the owner. Everybody knows the owner gives you the best price. He's not working on commission, he's working to pay the rent on the place.
I cannot underline how wonderful his store is and how unique the jewelry. It's a hidden gem when you're heading north on Post Road. He's after the small strip mall that has Calise's and a liquor store. It's a small house, close to the road. It does not say NY Jewelers on the front, merely "Estate Jewelry" in the window.
I do not know how to describe the price range. You are buying fine jewelry after all, not hamburgers. I gave him $$ because for what you are purchasing, the prices are definitely moderate.
