Missed it by one day…read more.. Continuing on my quest to eat non-Italian food in Italy (I'd been on a pasta bender and needed to get off for a little while), I found Brasserie 4:20. Beyond being impressed that the craft beer/burger scene in Rome resembled what it was in the States, I was shocked to find Roman bros. America, we have to do better at our exports. Alas, it's true. There are Roman bros and they congregate and work here. So, guys just be aware that if you come here, you service will come after any cute thing in a skirt that wants food/drink/whatever. The music is bro-y. The vibe is bro-y. It's a bro bar. That said, they have some good things to offer. Beyond connecting with bros from another continent, you come here for beer & burgers (and rock music and brownies but mostly beer & burgers). Despite not being much of a burger guy, I figured that 'when in Rome...'* Thing is, this burger didn't taste much like a lot of the ones I'd had back home. I ordered the angus burger with cheese, onions and pickle. The first thing I noticed was that the meat tasted much better than most of the burgers I'd had in the States. I don't know whether this was because of the angus beef or because we're not getting the real deal in the States. I'd had angus beef before. It didn't taste this good. Had I eaten beef like this regularly, I don't know that I could have given it up as easily. All this is to say that the beef wasn't as seasoned as it could have been. Salt & pepper before it's grilled, boys. That's all you need. Good quality beef. Needed more seasoning. To accompany my burger, I tried two beers: the Royal Brown and the Terzo Tempo. I don't know if styles change from country to country but I found the brown to taste more like a stout and my cream ale was REALLY light. This isn't to say that I didn't enjoy drinking them (well, the cream ale was a bit of a disappointment) but they provided a different taste profile than I was anticipating. I experienced all of this while sitting at the bar (the perfect vantage point, in my opinion). If in Rome and in need of a pasta/pizza break, head to 4:20. I then had some baked chicken with a side of broccoli. Chicken was good but broccoli was delicious. Steamed and seasoned perfectly. As good as the food was though, the chicken and broccoli came out barely room temperature, which obviously takes away from the meal. Aside from that, it was a very good experience with good food.

The real VIP dish of the night was the tiramisu. I don't eat tiramisu as I've never had a good one. Our waiter Alex assembled the tiramisu table side. Honestly, it really didn't need the hype. With fresh mascarpone,espresso and cacao flakes, it really was a great tasting dessert AND we hope to get back there one last time before we leave. Yes it was that good! My friend decided to order the risotto and I ordered the clam spaghetti. Our food in general wasn't bad (Don't know if it was our hungry stomachs talking or if it was actually good). It was pretty decent for what they charged us. The service was pretty reasonable too. The servers were not incredibly friendly like how I like my customer service, but they were attentive and always asked whether we wanted anything else. At the end of our meal, they even offered us free cookies and chocolate which was very nice and generous of them. CONS: When we got the check, we noticed that they charged us 4 euros for our table, 4 euros for water (it wasn't even bottle water like most restaurants give you in Italy. It tasted like water straight out of the tap) and 3 euros for a service fee. I understand the service fee but the 8 euros for water and our seats was unreasonable. The restaurant was basically 80% empty and they had no issues with seating us. The 3 euros for our service fee was okay. We were planning on giving them a tip because of the nice gesture with the chocolate and cookies but since they gave us unnecessary charges, we decided not to. After getting the check, I decided then to look the restaurant up on yelp. (ONE OF THE ONLY REGRETS I HAVE DURING MY ITALY TRIP) I read reviews on how this restaurant charged for unreasonable things and how the food gave some customers food poisoning. Now I am feeling very paranoid about getting sick on my Easter vacation. Hopefully all you yelpers out there read this review before having this restaurant! You definitely need to make a reservation; we saw many parties get turned away while we were dining. Every item that we had was wonderful. I don't think you can go wrong with anything on this menu. We started with a really great Bruschette that was full of salami and drizzled with truffle honey. The Carbonara & Lasagne were great. The Porchetta was possibly the best meat I've eaten in all of Italy, you HAVE to get it if you come. Service was really great as well! Just be aware that you have to go down a pretty narrow staircase and that the tables are all close together.
