What a find..... We were looking for a nice sit-down dinner experience while staying in White River Junction. This place fit the bill. IT IS NOT A CAFE. It IS FINE dining. We were able to get a seat even without reservations but if you choose to eat after 6 pm I would suggest reservations. Very comfortable setting and the owner/manager is there to offer you the finest dining experience. We both had the Hanger Steak on the recommendation of the wait staff. My wife was very satisfied, I was not that thrilled with the steak but i was good, nice spices, nice accoutrements, wife had soup as appetizer and said it was fantastic. This restaurant would give any NY restaurant a run for the money and I could eat here every evening. Take the plunge and stop in for a good dinner. read more

We visited for a birthday dinner while staying in Woodstock, VT! The menu was exciting to pick from with a diverse selection! The waitress we had was extremely friendly and made good conversation! We started off with a Crab Bisque and a grilled Caesar salad - both were delicious! For our main courses we had the Char-Grilled Teres Major Steak and the Pappardelle Pasta. The steak was recommended to be cooked at Medium Rare temp which I asked for, but came out medium at best! The onions were undercooked, the carrots were extremely over cooked! The steak itself was under seasoned with little flavor. The pasta looked delicious but had no flavor. The sauce was extremely runny, pasta was mush as itwas so over cooked and the broccoli was only slightly cooked. The ricotta was the only thing done well! We were excited by the apps, disappointed by the entrees so we were nervous for the dessert. We ordered the Chocolate Crepes and the Creme Brulee. The chocolate crepes were good if you are a fan of Raspberries! The crepes had a slight chocolate flavor filled with cream, raspberries, and a raspberry drizzle! The crème brûlée had a funky taste as it was burnt and reminded me of a burnt marshmallow! Overall, we were disappointed with the meal. read more

Tip top was a favorite place for a very nice casual lunch when I worked in area. Presentation, quality and variety of food always much above what one expects at their very reasonable prices. Last night tried dinner for 1st time, w/o reservation and on tight time line. They did a superb job getting us in, comfortably fed and out while making the whole experience relaxed. Sesame pork & ginger meatloaf is wonderfully satisfying, nicely plated. Not your father's meatloaf and on other hand not curtsied up. Comfort, substantial, while being light in texture. Ricotta dumplings also very nice experience with sauce, roasted winter veggies and lovely oyster mushrooms. A novel pairing that worked. A very pleasant meal on very cold night. Nice warm feeling. Excellent food gets mired down by inattentive waitstaff. This place tries to be hip, but please take it from this New Yorker, train your staff better. Hostess was nice and also helped clean tables and serve when we were there, so my guess is that there was some staffing issue as there were empty tables on a Saturday night and a half hour wait. Maybe we were stuck with the worst waitress in the place. Someone of the waitstaff dropped a glass at one point and it took forever for a beer to get to our table. Efficiency was not in the house. Excellent meal in an artsy co-op building. Service was prompt. Good selection of wines and cocktails. Highly recommend the artisan cheese plate with local Vermont cheeses--delicious and presented well. Steak was a perfect medium rare. Found this restaurant on Yelp while dropping off a car at the local airport. Reviews looked good so we tried it. French fries are really tasty if you like garlic and they could easily be split by four people. Chicken salad was all white meat and the salad accompanying it was tasty. Could have used a bit more tarragon but I love tarragon and some folks don't. Hubby had the pulled pork sandwich which had a crispy roll and sweet taste. He ate every bite. We'd go back. read more

While taking a vacation in VT I followed the reviews on Yelp to this delightful restaurant. I was not disappointed! The lavender rubbed duck breast over apricot relish with black rice & braised red cabbage is one of the best meals I've ever had. Even a basic salad was give some flare- the Caesar is flashed grilled and the char on lettuce lends a sweetness to the romaine. The creative use of the old radiators from this charming building was wonderful too- painted and used to make a fence around the out door dining area. I will certainly visit again if I find myself in that area! read more

Tip Top is a great little restaurant in White River Junction - perfect for a pre-theater meal or just a nice dinner out. They have a pretty eclectic menu, from meatloaf to dumplings, but everything I've tried has been super flavorful (almost too much for my bland tastes.) The prices are slightly higher than typical Upper Valley restaurants (assume spending $25-30 per person), but the service is fantastic. The sauce that comes with the bread is also AMAZING. Make reservations a few days ahead of time for an evening dinner since they book up and there isn't really much of a "bar" area if you were thinking of grabbing a glass of wine while waiting for a table to open up. read more

Walked right in, on the Friday of Labor Day, around 5. Gary was our server and I have to say he was one of the best I've seen. He took an interest in where we were from, how we found the place, and never used any of the standard server cliche lines. Really appreciated the local beers. We started out with the garlic fries (with a touch of sugar?!), which were quite addictive. I had the sesame pork and ginger meat loaf, and the fiancee had the pork chops. Both were delicious. Thyme has been one of our favorites places for years. The food is amazing and creatively prepared. Every meal is consistently delicious with a nice variety of offerings each night. The bread and dip, fries and desserts are items that I rarely eat at other restaurants but they are a treat not to be missed at Thyme. My husband and I have not been eating inside since Covid, but we are doing curbside pickup. We highly recommend that you make a visit to Thyme and enjoy a fabulous dinner! What a gem! I was in WRJ a week and sadly I didn't find them until my last dinner. I had the cheese plate which came with a generous helping of exquisite cheeses and perfect pairings. The meatloaf was the best I've ever had out. Dessert special of ginger cake with blood orange gelato also very very good. The service (Brianna) was perfect. Perfect balance of checking on me without being overly attentive and I was welcomed not rushed. Atmosphere inside very charming and whole staff was very friendly. Great lunch with an upscale menu. Sweet potato and chipotle soup was absolutely delicious. First taste is sweet but just as you start to swallow you get the some heat from the chipotle. But not too hot. Really kept you coming back for more. Also had a chicken salad plate that just a hint of spice but otherwise creamy chicken salad. Coffee was nice and strong. Service was wonderful. I went with my mother for lunch. My mother had the salmon sandwich special for lunch and I had the Vietnamese sandwich. She enjoyed her sandwich but I was surprised because it had a salmon cream cheese instead of actual salmon on it. My sandwich was yummy but very different than traditional Bah Mi. The vegis were similar but the meat was this pork meat ball, tasty but not what you'd expect. I Overall I think they have a neat local, good ambiance vibe. They have definitely taken a different direction with some of the dishes. The service was great and our waiter was very attentive, but not obnoxious. I should note that I accidentally got the dinner menu, which looked fabulous but more pricey than I'd casually pay for a night out. (Maybe save it for a special occasion?) read more

Stopped in while traveling because I liked what I read about this place on the internet. We were starving and noticed we were a little early for dinner. It was 4;45 and I popped in and had to grab the attention of manager?/owner? Who was talking to someone. I said we were traveling and looking for somewhere to eat. She told us the kitchen opened at 5 (15 minutes) and that we could wait outside or walk around in the building next door. We were hungry and thirsty and traveling and a nice hospitable welcome would have been appreciated. A good hostess /owner would have said that the kitchen is not open yet but please sit down and let me get you a drink and some menus. Needless to say we didn't sit out in the car to wait for the kitchen to open. This is the hospitality business. Thyme showed us none. read more

If I had the option to give a 3.5/3.75 rating I'd definitely use it here. Nothing unpleasant or a bad experience, just not quite 4 stars. Definitely be aware this is a restaurant and not a cafe. Menu options looked good but the special caught my eye. Chickpea soup was tasty, except the vegetables weren't fresh (frozen variety style). The bowl was also deceptively shallow for the price. This place is killing it. Fresh delicious food and friendly smart service make it a go to! An uncomplicated, but creative menu- Fried Brussel spouts were so tasty; crispy, light and the sauce and pickled onion and cucumber on them added a nice zesty compliment. The grilled shrimp are amazing, soups and Rueben sandwich all also terrific. Dessert- leave room! Flourless choc cake comes warm, the fruit crisp was wonderful and the creams brulle was perfection. Really, on a Wednesday night in White River Junction between seasons? Come on. Amazing. Short menus usually scare me but I can't wait to go back and try it all at Tip Top. The first night in WRJ i found Tip Top. I ordered the lobster risotto. It was absolutely delicious. I was only in WRJ for 2 days so had to try it again. This time i ordered the pork and ginger meatloaf with red wine demi sauce. Again, absolutely delicious. The chef here can wipe up some amazing dishes. I cant wait to go back to WRJ just to try them again. In addition the house dipping sauce they serve with bread made my mouth water. Great find! Sadly we were only in town for a night, but finding the Tip Top Cafe made that night memorable. Their garlic aioli (served with crusty bread) sets up high expectations for a meal that did not disappoint. We had the apple and sweetpotato fritters, which came piping hot with a slightly spicy creamy dipping sauce. Next was the butternut squash, bacon, and cheddar risotto (I had mine w/o bacon). Really great place for lunch or dinner. The ambiance is very nice with both indoor and outdoor seating (weather permits). The wait staff are very friendly and courteous. Stopped by this afternoon. I had about an hour to kill before I had to go pick up the lil ones, so i decided to grab a paper and hang out with a latte or something. I had no intention of having anything to eat, but as soon as I took one look at the menu.. i had to. Please understand that I am NOT a salad-only kinda girl - but their kale salad sounded sooo good. (Hard to find a restaurant that is brave enough to use kale as a star ingredient.) The kale was gently wilted, surrounded by big chunks of goat cheese, and topped with a creamy nut butter dressing. It was divine! I'm not sure if the salad is a special menu item.. but DAMN, it was good. As for service, everyone was very warm from the start. I had a server from a different table come by and ask me how the salad was. There was one little hiccup that I mentioned my server, but it was immediately remedied. Minutes later the manager(?) came by to apologize for the error. Hey, we're only human.. and it was fixed, so who needs to dwell? From the outside, it looks like an unassuming little coffee shop - but i'll tell you what, they're menu and service is something you'd find in the downtown of a metropolitan city. I can't believe I just barely found Tip Top before leaving the Upper Valley. The menu is excellent, and the decor is modern and contemporary. I only wish I'd tried the fries with garlic aioli because they looked amazing! The bread with the aioli, however, is a reasonable substitute. read more

Poor service! Waited 10 minutes for the "hostess" to finish paying out some contractor, meanwhile a bevy of waitstaff walked by and barely spoke. Once seated multiple waitstaff walked by, making eye contact with my partner but scurrying to clear other patrons tables. One either came to the table next to us and put his derrière nearly in my ladies face and promptly ignored us. After another 10 minutes of waiting we stood up and left. Oh wow! Really good creative food in WRJ. Stopped in on the way back from Montreal, and will definitely return if I pass through here again. Started with gazpacho, soup of the day, which was executed well - cucumber was crunchy as it should be. The highlight was the main course, duck leg apparently brought to you by the letter B - with broccolini and wild blueberries on a bed of rice - this dish works surprisingly well because the blueberries are tart, not sweet as in blueberry pie. The service was simply stunning, very attentive without being overbearing, especially as they were having a busy night. read more

We stopped off at this restaurant for lunch on the way to St Albans bay. The place has a really chill vibe. We sat outside because it was a very nice day. We ordered the crispy fries with fresh garlic aioli for the table to share. I really wanted to to eat them all myself. They were rather fantastic. My wife tried the BBQ pulled port sandwich and that to was really good. I tried the brisket Reuben and was very satisfied with the meal. If I lived in the area I would probably become a regular. With the cool setting good food and friendly service it's defiantly worth giving a try. read more

We had dinner here while on a college tour, honestly wasn't expecting much out of this small town of White River Junction. This restaurant surprised us beyond imagination! We ordered a cheese plate and wine, the cheese plate has 3 kinds of cheeses (decent portion), grapes, dates and fancy crackers. This plate in the SF Bay Area would definitely cost more than double! This plate and a nice glass of wine (which they have) was enough for me to call it an enjoyable dinner. However, my daughter ordered garlic fries and seared salmon to split. The garlic fries were flavorful but not too salty nor too garlicky, it was so good that my daughter wanted to take it back to the hotel and eat the "cold & soggy" fries cuz it would still taste better than other fries she had... The salmon was the highlight of the evening- the chef split the order on two plates for us (which was only done in a fancy restaurant in the Bay Area). The salmon just melted in our mouth, so tender and smooth, salted just enough to bring out the full flavor of the salmon. It was so good that we scraped off every last bit of food on the plate! read more
