This new shop around a corner from my house really opened up a new venue for my 12 year old to explore the world of not only skateboarding, but also thinking and designing. The owner of the shop besides having great prices and carefully selected items of high quality has a welcoming and creative nature about him. I stopped by for the first time and got a great deal on some Drake snowboard bindings. The staff was cool, owner was there and he helped me the most... highly recommended the bindings and when I used them they were awesome. Looking forward to exploring their surf gear more too. Best skate shop around! Good for all ages, and very friendly staff.

Where to start. They did have what I wanted and that was nice. That ends the good. They shipped in the slowest manor possible and didn't even wrap the box. Just taped up the box and shipped. What if I was collecting these? I paid the additional for the "fast processing" which maybe saved me from waiting 2 weeks. I've received heavier boxes from over seas for cheaper. I will never trust this shop with my purchases again. And any shipper is more efficient that UPS. Get out of the Stone Age and step up your online business practices and how you ship. Maybe your protocol needs to be to contact the customer before it ships and make sure they need it this year so they can order from anywhere else. 2 stars to be nice. Lucky I'm feeling good as I right this and holding back how I really feel about my experience with this company. As someone that was paying extra for sped up processing clearly paying for better shipping options is not a concern of cost to the customer. I am so happy I found this little slice of skateboard heaven, located right off of South Huntington Ave at the Cypress St intersection. I think I have been there twice a week since I first started going a few weeks ago since every time I leave, I think about more stuff I wish I grabbed and then go back for more. The store is tight (both in dope product and physically small), but the key is to look at their website to see the deep selection of product they have stored in the back and then simply ask for it when you get there. I think this store would double or triple its sales if they had the space to lay out all of the sick items they have for sale. So far, I've bought two scooters for my kids, two complete skateboards (I just took on skating again after a 25 year hiatus and loving it), a skateboard rack, and clothing. They have so much more that I haven't explored yet - snowboard equipment, long boards, etc. The prices are fair, the staff takes their time with you to make sure you have everything you need, and overall, you'll feel good after leaving knowing you are supporting a local business. I recommend checking out this shop and treating yourself to something fun. read more

Highly recommend Gabe and team at Thuro. Best shop for longboards anywhere in Massachusetts. Came in for some bushings and they totally took care of me. Great stock of everything - boards, protective gear, wheels...everything. Also blown away that they had a section for inline skates including USD, Remz, etc. They offer lessons on everything. This is a great shop, with awesome customer service. The guy set my son up with a complete board, helmet, and pads, for his 6th birthday. This shop is set up with a lot of great gear for the experienced rider, but I was especially impressed with how well they can handle the new (6 year old) customer with no prior experience. Finally, a skate shop near Boston where you can try on blades before you buy. I was looking for a skate the shop didn't have in stock... Gabe ordered it for me right away and the skates were there in a couple days. It was a nice change to have the product right in front of me rather than ordering online and hoping it fits. The shop has a great display of all the products. I will definitely be stopping back in soon for some more gear. Went to Thuro's the other day to get my inline skates tuned up. They needed new wheels and bought bearings while I was there as well. Met the owner, Gabe, who was very knowledgeable of the equipment and passionate about what he does. What I didn't like was how he took advantage of my unfamiliarity with the inline skate industry. After I had disclosed that I had little to no knowledge of the products and was eager to get them tuned up for the first time with the birthday money my parents left me that day, he was quick to exploit my naivete. The tune up came to a price just shy of what I actually paid for the skates themselves. It wasn't until after I had made the purchase that I realized what had just happened. Also the "receipt" was supposed to be email to me, which I never received. I do believe that this store serves a purpose to the skateboard and inline enthusiasts. However for the average joe with little knowledge of the industry I would not recommend going to Thuro's. Very displeased. read more

Unfortunately, I can't rate Thuro less than 1 star. The alleged owner: *was belligerent on first (and only) visit *answered product questions unsatifactorily *recommended products which did not meet requirements I've never ridden a skateboard, but I'm interested in learning how to commute on one. I have a strong cycling background and an engineering degree, so I've done my research in order to ask specific, targetted questions. I pass Thuro everyday on my way to work. Today I stopped in to ask some questions about getting into the sport. I explained to a person claiming to be the owner that I am: *a complete novice to skateboarding (never ridden one) *interested in the beginners'- level inventory *unsure of longterm committment to the sport (citing injuries) *wanting to commute to work (not interested in tricks or competitions) *preferring a smaller board in a specific shape (34" cruiser). Immediately the alleged owner tried to sell me a $280 40" topmount and a $180 40" double kick. Pointing to an example of the style I wanted hanging on the wall and explaining again what I was looking for, the alleged owner offered me classes, which would teach me to "shred" my new board. Insisting again that I did not want to start off a new sport by sinking a lot of capital into a feasibility study, I asked for something that might be more appropriate for a 10 year old to start learning; the alleged owner suggested a penny board. Realizing that I wasn't getting anywhere, I pulled out my phone and within 10 seconds found a beginner cruiser product and a $70 pricepoint on Amazon. (My previous research suggested this type of product might be a very good fit for meeting my learning objectives.) Immediately, the alleged owner began to criticize the Amazon board, citing component concerns, learning curve issues, enjoyability, and short product life. ("Finally!" I thought, "now we're in the right ballpark and can start to compare items.") I was shown similar inventory at prices that were about $100. I asked about the differences between the Amazon product and the Thuro inventory, especially with regard to the materials of manufacture for deck (What type of plywood?), trucks (Steel or aluminum?), bearings (What type?), and wheels (What size?). The answer I was repeatedly cited was "industry standard," but when I asked about specifics, I was only given qualitative answers ("good" and "not fun") and acronyms (which weren't defined, even after asking). I couldn't help starting to wonder whether the alleged owner was mistaking my being a novice for my being a sucker? The alleged owner even attempt to "demonstrate" the difference between the Thuro board and the Amazon board by showing the performance of a Thuro cruiser and a well-used skateboard. I explained that the test wasn't accurate because the skateboard used a vastly different system of trucks, wheel size and hardness, and bearing assembly than the Amazon product. After asking about the make-up of the bearing assembly on the Thuro board, I was told, "Buy what you want, I don't care." Asking for clarification on that statement, I was then told that I was "frustrating" because I asked "too many questions." I reiterated that I was asking basic questions in a polite manner about beginner products for a new sport and that while I was relying on professional expertise to guide me, I had every right to know what it was that I might be buying. Then I walked out. Obviously, I can get a highly reviewed product to learn with at a better price on Amazon (or Craigslist or LetGo, and the alleged owner knew it), but I vet small businesses because I want to form lasting relationships while I play the sport. It's not just about a one-time purchase for a new sport; it's also about lessons, repairs, upgrades, and maybe even getting my kid involved with the sport. It's a shame that the alleged owner tried to dazzle me with b*s* instead of treating me and my business with respect; I don't support disrespectful businesses. He wasted no time going over the pros and cons of buying a complete or buying parts separate. He even let me try out a few boards. Everyone in there was great, very helpful, and totally cool with helping out a newbie. Would 100% recommend. Great Selection and even better prices. read more

I recently contacted Thuro about getting a skate board for my granddaughter. I know nothing about longboards, and I was inquiring about a particular board that she liked. I spoke to Gabe and he told me that the board she wanted was not available through them. There were reasons why Thuro no longer carried it, and Gabe explained them to me. Gabe sent me some pictures of other boards that had similar designs. We are Native American, and my granddaughter wanted a board with a Native theme. The board we got is just amazing. My granddaughter is so happy. Gabe also recommended tools to adjust the wheels, and my grandson did this for her. I really appreciate how well taken care of we felt by the staff at Thuro. Went to Thuro last Sat looking for new wheels for my inline skates. While they had the wheels I needed, I complained that I wanted a new frame for much bigger wheels but the boot I wanted to keep had a complicated setup that had already proved non transferable to many other wheel frames. One of the guys there, Henry, quickly demonstrated a vast knowledge and performed all the due diligence to see if something could be done with what they had. He was able to set my boots up with a frame, wheel and bearings package that worked perfectly at a very reasonable price. I was also impressed with how Henry's coworker, Elliot, helped the process between helping other customers and selling a longboard to another satisfied customer. From now on, this will be the place I check first for my ongoing equipment needs. read more

This was the first shop I went to looking for a sort of Longboard or some sort of board the would be used to get transportation around the city. At that time I didn't realized how overpriced there products were, what i did realized at that time was that they were so pushy for a sale that I felt uncomfortable. They also used the fact the not only was a beginner, I was a woman, so I would need some thing extra easy to ride and "not too fast,.. you are a woman and naturally wont be good at falling... maybe roller blades would be better or even a scooter?.....". OH MY GOD, they treated me so different being a new skateboarder and also tried to push really expensive skateboards on me that "would be better for a beginner and a woman too...". We are talking over $600!!!! WOW. I am happy I finally found that skateboard shop in Somerville, that had 30 times the selection (there name is Maximum Hesh and are in Davis Sq Somerville, who over the phone then assured me that a skateboard would be between 100 and 200, but only 200 and the very maximum with the very best expert components, and I ended up telling them my budget was $150, and left with a great skateboard custom for me at only 145 including tax!!! Anyways, back to Thuro, they WERE ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE! I wouldn't send my worst enemy here. I can't believe they are in business. I will tell you it can't be there skateboards, maybe there roller blades or scooters? i honestly don't know. I hate, really hate giving bad reviews to small businesses, but don't waste your time. If they were just a little rude I could have dealt, I am a big girl, but they were downright insulting and it was like dealing with the worst used car sales man.
