This Thundercloud is routinely subpar. Which is unacceptable for a chain restaurant. You can have Subway in any country in the world and there's more homogeneity than what one experiences at this Central Texas specific sandwich shop. You guys make sandwiches. You're told exactly how to make them. Twice. First during what I assume is an all too brief sandwich training class and then again by the customer. My problem isn't so much with the guy holding the mustard I guess, as it is management. Allow me to make alterations to a sandwich without catastrophic penalty. Upcharges for lettuce and sprouts and relish are, I suppose explainable. It doesn't make it an enjoyable experience though. Throwing a tantrum when I want to remove an item from a sandwich definitely shouldn't be a problem. Look, I know the meat is already bundled together for you but, when I don't want ham on my Italian, don't freak out. For a place called Thundercloud, in Austin, it sucks that I think y'all should mellow out. It was 6:30pm this Friday evening when I placed my family's order online. I showed up 20 min later (as was my order estimate) to find that none of my items had been made. This was because one of my 6 sandwiches was a large on white and they were out of white. First strike: a sandwich shop being out of white bread at 6pm on a Friday. Second strike: thinking that making two smalls instead of a large wasn't an equivalent option. You may be right, two smalls may not exactly equate to a large. But when I screw up at my job, it isn't the customers responsibility to grin and bare it. Sorry I am OBSESSED with Thundercloud Subs. This location is nice as they offer their smoothies (some locations don't.) They are extremely fast and get the job done. The sandwich artists are extremely nice/outgoing/funny. I have a great time every time I stop by. The ingredients are always fresh, and the bread is just delicious. Come in and order the special of the month however the guy who makes it thought I said I wanted two of the same sandwich. Gives me an attitude because he misheard what I said. Tried not giving me my cookie I ordered and not even a bag to go with sandwich I was taking to go with half ass wrapping. I was hungry and got a California Club on a gluten free sub. The sandwich artist, washed his hands got a clean cutting board and knife and made my sandwich. And it was delicious. After years of not going to Thundercloud for no real reason, it is back on my list of favorite fast foods. read more

We love TC and decided to try a new location. This store is difficult to find, not visible from the service road, in a rundown shopping area. When we walked in, the two workers were lackadaisical and, though they made eye contact, did not acknowledge us in any other way for several minutes as they casually went about moving things around. Only when another group came in did they resentfully take our order. My Veggie Delite was made without avocado, which I didn't realize until we got home, since we decided to get our order to go, given the unwelcoming atmosphere. Will never return to this location. Nada Chicken...nom! Thundercloud has a great array for anyone from carnivore (like my date) to vegan (for me). I adore this locally-owned "chain" far and above the others you've heard of. Each store tends to have it's unique flair/setup necessary for it's locale/clientele. Unfortunately, from store to store, they assume "lettuce tomato onion" and "cheese - which one do you want" on every sub. I realize that, as a vegan, I'm in a tiny minority, but I'd prefer the question instead of the assumption. (After all, we all know what happens when you assume...). So, I'd ask that they train their staffs to have a little more courtesy, especially when someone orders a veggie or nada chicken sub... -1* for Pepsi instead of Coke. read more

Decided to go to Thundercloud today and so glad I did. I was served by Jade who recommended I try the Turkish Delight. I have been having a bum day and while he made my sandwhich engaged in conversation with me. By the time he had finished I had felt like a buddy was talking to me. Apart from giving an awesome recommend and making a really good sandwhich (which if you like veggies and turkey you should try) he managed to make my evening better. He was very friendly, courteous and laid back enough to really go above and beyond with customer service. I'll start off by saying I use to be a fan of this place, back when I didn't pay attention to how they prepared my food. I know This is an Austin staple and the "lets keep it weird motto", reigns supreme here, but when I See an old man with longer hair than a woman, without a hair net prepare my sandwich WITHOUT gloves, it makes me super frightened! So frightened that I couldn't stomach to eat my sandwich. IF the owner of this sandwich company is reading this please for the health of the community start requiring gloves, can we really trust someone who we don't know to wash their hands correctly? The staff is just SO personable and easy to talk to. They enjoy their jobs, and it is so obvious. I had the tuna, roast beef and advocado, california club,the list just goes on. I went there this evening, same as I usually do, ordered my very simple order, and only expected the usual treatment of Thundercloud that I've come to expect, which is awesome. I was sorely disappointed. I had to repeat my order three times before the blonde jerk could even attempt to make it (2 small office specials on wheat with thundersauce, 1 with lettuce, and that's it). Well, he tried to make something else with avocado, and I said no the OFFICE favorite. He said oh yeah, that's why I ask. Then had me repeat the toppings again. Then when I went to grab chips, he put salt and pepper all over both sandwiches after I had explicitly said I didn't want it on either. When I said something, he got really defensive and rude and was like what so do you want me to remake them, REALLY?! And I said yeah, I do because I don't eat salt and pepper. And he got pissed and started throwing new bread on the counter and slamming the egg salad container down, and offered the sandwiches to the guy behind me for free and said well I have to waste them otherwise. Then started using extremely offensive curse words, like "god****it" and then said the "f***ing lettuce" is over there and "sh**". Rang me up, gave the other sandwiches away right in front of me, never apologized and then tried to charge me for the office favorite without giving me the bacon and when I asked for my bacon he was like really, yeah, okay whatever. He was seriously freaking rude and completely ruined my experience. He didn't give me a receipt, nor did he thank me. He was young, blonde, and really short for a guy. I also feel obliged to rate the location at Lake Creek Parkway because I probably eat lunch here once a week. The ingredients are always fresh and prepared promptly with care by friendly staff. Never met a sandwich I didn't like at Thundercloud. Thundercloud's nickname could be "Old Reliable". It ain't fancy or new but it's always good and always hits the spot. I'm a native Austinite and have been going to Thundercloud for 25 years. I've been to many locations. This one at Lake Creek and 183 is close to my work, but I won't be going back. Yesterday I got a RUINED sandwich from one of the degenerates that work there. There were 3 things that this sandwich maker screwed up. I told her what I wanted, and she cut into the bread, getting mayo all over it, before asking if I wanted mayo or mustard. I told her I did not like mayo and now there was mayo on the bread. Luckily she did not arge and got a new piece of bread and wiped the knife this time before cutting. Then when whe asked if I wanted mustard, I said Yes, and she put about 3X the mustard she should have. I didn't say anything but it was way too much. When we got to the thundersauce and pepper question I said Yes, please, and then she DROWNED my sandwich with about 2 ounces of this oil/vinegar mix. My sandwich was destroyed at this point. I've had lots of these sandwiches, but never someone as dumb as this who does not understand how to not destroy a sandwich. The bread was soggy, WAY too much oil/vinegar -- she just kept making passes backa and forth as if she was trying to erase the sandwich out. How can someone be this stupid? You work at a sandwich shop and can't make a sandwich??? I doubt this person is even fit to bag groceries. I spent almost 8 bucks on this sandwich and it was terrible because of this dumb employee. When I got to the car I had to immediately pull half the lettuce of and other items that were soaked with thundersauce. I know pretty much all TC employees are stoners, and I have no issue with that. They started running their special today with 1975 prices. We get there at 5:15 and wait for 20 minutes. Immediately we get to the front of the line and they tell us they're now out of large bread. We ask if we can buy 2 smalls each (4 total) instead and they refuse since the limit is 2 subs per order. Seriously? This place has many hours left until closing, they run out of merchandise and they won't make a tiny concession? That's just bad business. Unfortunately we only brought one debit card with us so we couldn't order separately. We will be taking our business to the MULTIPLE other sub shops in the area. Thundercloud might have been one of the first sub shops in Austin but their bad business practices can only take them so far. read more

I usually go to this location because I've always had a positive experience there. Today, I called in for a pick-up order and upon arrival, I asked if I could have a water cup for water. (since it is hot outside) The guy that took my payment seemed cool at first until I asked for a water and then rudely responded with "next time I ask you if you want a drink or not, please let us know." I told him that it's just water and unprofessionally he says "yes, and we charge for that." I left the water cup on the counter and left the store. I then I called the store back asking for the name of the associate that I encountered with and the girl says that she "couldn't give me his name because she feels uncomfortable". I then asked to speak to a manager, manager gets on the line and I began explaining my perception of the situation and how it could've been handled differently. He starts to back up his associate and said that they do charge for water cups, etc. After explaining that I've never was charged for water cups for all of the times I've been coming to this location, he cut me off every time. I no longer will be coming back to this location due to their unprofessionalism and lack of customer service. If you hate your job, please look for a new one. read more

The people at this location apparently don't like to make shakes. I've never had a problem at the Round Rock location, but here they will ignore it until you ask about it. when i first walked in, pitbull was playing and it was mildly offputting. the musical confusion continued when all they played was reggae for the rest of the time i was there. the service wasn't fast, but it was personal-- and if i've learned anything from my recent binges of the hit NBC show, The Office, it's that personal business is a lot more important than quick service. the subs were tasty, and the ingredients were fresh, yet the reggae music CONTINUED. at the end of my visit, i walked up to grab a brownie. i was handed one with a smile, and a "pay for it later," and it was-- y'all i cannot stress this enough-- SO. I came into town to visit family and it was recommended straight from the airport for a quick meal. You should not expect the huge rolls you might expect from mainstream sandwich places.
