What a great place! Good food & beverages! Awesome views of the Columbia River! Pleasant and friendly waitstaff! What could be better than all that?! For my 70th birthday, a couple of friends took me on a road trip to Eastern Oregon (thank goodness for friends, right?) and our first night's dinner was right here at Thunder Island. We were pretty hungry after our drive and Thunder Island did not disappoint. Between the three of us, we ordered a salad, a bowl and a burger, along with a glass of beer, a flight of beers and a glass of cider. The salad was the Poached Pear & Beet Salad, the bowl was the Ginger Tofu Bowl and the burger was the Bacon Jam Burger - all super tasty and filling! We sat in the outside patio area because we had a couple of dogs with us but even without the dogs, if you can sit outside, do. Our window for good weather in the PNW is fairly short so we should never miss a chance to sit outside whenever we can. The view of the river is probably more spectacular from inside upstairs, but man, sitting outdoors when we can is the best thing ever, right? read more

Stopped in after a 22 mile bike ride to grab a beer and some fries. Basically just wanted snacks. Did see someone order the kimchi rueben which looked good. If I was hungrier, I would have ordered that. Was immediately seated out in the 2nd story deck with a nice view of the Bridge of the Gods. Fast, friendly, good service. This was the cherry on top of an already amazing day of an amazing day of doing the rail bikes in Hood River. We stopped by here to have some snacks. We were hoping there might be a happy hour, but no such luck. However, the prices are reasonable so it's all good. We had buffalo cauliflower, chili caesar salad, and a beer tasting. All was good, and the staff was friendly and efficient. Stopped by after a hike to grab some grub on our way back to Portland. It was such a nice day out and we noticed outdoor patio seating on the upper floor and it reeled us in. Great friendly energy and they seem to be dog friendly which is always nice We started off with a flight. My boyfriend had never been to the Pacific Northwest before so he was excited to try out the breweries. The server did a great job of giving her recommendations and was overall a real sweetheart. We ordered a Caesar Salad to share. I had the Blackened Chicken Sando & he had the Kimchi Reuben. Both were delicious and we took the rest home because of how filling they were. Would definitely recommend to try the sweet potato fries with garlic aioli dipping sauce. The only thing missing was I wish they had more appetizer choices. It's been a while since we've been out to the cascades, we found out Thunder Island has moved to it's current new location and couldn't wait to try. We arrived just after 1pm on a beautiful Saturday, Sun's out and patio is full, but plenty of tables inside which we were happy with. The window side facing the mountain is also a nice view. My young one (6 yo) has been into chili a lot lately, we added cheese to the dish, and she was very satisfied with her food, it had a lot of flavor and you can tell it's most likely made from scratch. I've been having a bit too much burgers lately and decided to switch it up with the blackened chicken sando, I was warned it gets spicy, which def had a kick to it but I wouldn't say it was flaming hot by any means. It was nice to be able to get sweet potato waffle fries as a side without extra charge, and their Ya Ya Ee Juicy IPA is super tasty and as the name says "juicy". Our server was friendly, one of our kids knocked over the water glass and they were also very attentive and got us cleaned up quickly. We did try to finish up a quicker as we saw the line build up all the way front the second floor out to the door on the first, so we were probably lucky to avoid the wait. Hopefully it's an outlier staff member but the service our group received at this brewery was the worst experience I've had dining out. I brought 4 friends from back home who were visiting Oregon for the first time and was so excited to take them here. Our experience is disappointing because the food we all had was outstanding, the patio views are great and it's dog friendly. It was Labor Day and not much was open in Cascade Locks so the long wait time is not a big deal. However, the server we had on the outdoor patio was extremely rude and disinterested in being there. After waiting 45 minutes for a table and another 40 minutes for our food to arrive, the food runner dropped off our food and a meal for one member of our group was missing. After sharing that with the runner, she disappeared and almost 10 minutes later we were still waiting for anyone to come back. We watched staff walk by us, including our waiter without checking in. We had to stop him as he walked by to ask about the status of the meal. We asked if maybe they forgot our friend's meal and his response was "oh, well I didn't forget it". He looked at the little scanner thing and said "well we don't have any more of your meal". It was busy and understandable if certain items ran out, but if that was the case no one offered her to order something different and he didn't even apologize for any confusion or that we apparently waited 40 minutes to learn she couldn't have that meal while the rest of us had ours. He walked away and another 5 minutes later returned with the meal she had ordered (after telling us it was out of stock) and without a word or any eye contact dropped the plate and walked away. No one ever checked in after that, no apology for the delay or situation. No one ever came by again so we didn't get a chance to try more of the delicious beer. We tried not to be rude to anyone and understanding of the busy day but inquiring about a missing meal you ordered shouldn't be treated as an annoyance. The patio view is amazing and the food was amazing, so thank you to the kitchen staff. Not sure if I would risk going back with the next group of visitors. read more

They have strict COVID protocols in place with physical distancing signage as you enter. We got a pub table in an area with roll-up doors and got to see some of the river through the trees. Very friendly staff who took the time to chat for a moment, even with a busy bar in the background. We started off with the Buffalo Cauliflower app, and wow - was it good!! We couldn't eat it fast enough. The cauliflower was not too tender, coated with Buffalo sauce, and completely scrumptious! I want more! I opted for a Ceasar Salad with Pan Seared Salmon, and it was a pretty good portion of salmon - probably 4 oz or more. It was delish, well cooked, flavorful and very filling. Due to certain circumstances, we decided to go cherry picking in 95F+ weather. Even though we went in the morning, the heat picked up quickly and left us thirsty and heat exhausted. So we decided to drop by Thunder Island Brewing for a quick lunch to recuperate! To our surprise, the directions took us to a new location; the old one was next to the river, and the new one is right in the middle of Cascade Locks. While surprised, we were totally fine with the new location because it has a massive indoor (air conditioning) seating area, which was perfect for this insane heatwave! Also all the I window seats had gorgeous views of the gorge, it was a big win! So we got some beers and waited in the tasting area before getting seated. We tried their stout, cider and juice IPA. They are all decent and we enjoyed them. We got seated within 15 minutes which was faster than expected! The staff took our order right away and we got our food quickly. I got the kimchi rueben sandwich and enjoyed it. The bread was roasted nicely and there were generous amount of kimchi, corn beef and sauce. I think it is slightly salty in my taste (I've been on low salt diet for quite some years), but I know most likely it's me, not the sandwich. My bf and his brother in law really like their smash burgers. They were quite large with 2 generous patties with melted cheeses between the sesame buns. They both like it and devoured their entire plates! My bf's sister ordered the tofu rice bowl and said although there was some gingery sauce, the favor was so flat that she scooped in some Buffalo cauliflower sauce for more favor. We also shared an order of Buffalo cauliflower, and thought it was decent. Overall, I'd recommend this place if you like somewhere with good food and gorgeous views (and AC on a hot day)! read more

After a full day of visiting water falls with the family, my mother in law had wanted to go to see the salmon at the fish hatchery. we drove out there only to find it was closed. However the family was all getting a little hangry so was working hard to try to find a place we could eat that had some gluten free and vegetarian options. Managed to find this place. The building looked newer. It was cute you need to walk up some stairs (or take the elevator if you are not able to do stairs) and get to the 2nd floor. They offer indoor or outdoor seating. They seated us at a large table near some doors/windows that had a beautiful view of the mountains and river. It was absolutely stunning! However it was also very cold. They had the doors (looked like rolling windows) all the way up on 2 sides of us. one directly in front of us and one directly to the left of us. And the wind was blowing. We later asked if they would mind closing them as we were cold but they only closed about 1/2 way so we still had wind blowing on us. Looking at the menu it says to ask if you need gluten free or vegan BUT our server did not know what could made gluten free or vegan and seemed a little bit put out that she needed to go ask. Well yes dear, I am gluten free and need to know what i could order. Sorry to bother you....... The fries can not be made gluten free. I was starving so wanted something a little more substantial than a salad this time. I ended up getting a tofu/rice bowl, cant remember the name of it though. My daughter got the same thing I did and everyone else ordered varieties of burgers. The food itself was good though. The on-tap kombucha was not very good. So i would recommend not getting that. Reason for the 4 star is mainly because of our server and also the fact that we could not get the rolling doors closed despite fact we were cold. BUT there is a solid variety and multiple things I wanted to try. Coming from Texas, I always find it out when chili has beans in it - so just personal preference. I wanted to try two different sandwiches, luckily my fiancé also wanted to try the same two so we each got one and split it. We got two sides and two flights of beer. Additionally, had a pumpkin spice cannoli which was amazing. The people/staff are so friendly and attentive. Gave personalized recommendations. Later found out they're dog friendly too!! Need to bring our Goldie up to Portland sometime. The beer choices are solid and the views are incredible. You ordered online by scanning a QR code at the table to see the menu. We got the marionberry cider which was pretty tasty! For dinner, I ordered got the salmon bowl which was fresh and delicious! The beet and pear salad was nice and light, and the burger was also good. I'm sure restaurants are short-staffed because of covid, but no one was re-filling water glasses even though it was an 80-degree day. I began writing this review as a 4-star but as I got to writing the "Not So Good" I've realized it's unfortunately rounded out to a 3-star experience. The Good: -Clean -Great views from the deck as well as a few indoor seating spaces. -Board games and foosball -Welcoming environment -Kids menu -Conveniently located on the main drag of the south end of the Bridge of the Gods, and just off the highway. -Small town so plenty of street parking -Friendly staff -I very much liked the Dry (summer) Stout beer. Not so Good: -Slow service. Restaurant was maybe half full, and took just over 45 minutes for our food to come out. -The food was bad pretty-good. My daughter had the a chili, and despite paying extra for the cheese & sour cream, which was plentiful she said it tasted like metal. She has never before met a chili she hasn't liked before. The chili must have tasted really bad for the taste to be able to come through all the cheese and sour cream. -The Rueben sandwich with Kimchi in place of sauerkraut had oddly greasy but crisp bread & was actually pretty good...for the small parts that were layered correctly with the cheese, kimchi and meat stacked together; However, for large parts of the sandwich it was only the meat and cheese piled and TOO salty. Small parts were just the kimchi, which was a slippery mess & surprised me falling onto my clothing (hopefully can get stain out) on my first bite of the portion. when piled correctly I'd rate the sandwich a solid B. The kimchi acidity does a great job cutting the "too salty" mix of the meat and cheese. -I did not try the salmon bowl, but my kids liked it. -The french fries had a strong oil taste. They were nice and crisp, and appeared to be cooked correctly... maybe the wrong kind of oil, or the oil needed to be changed. -My husband said that Schnitzel sandwich was good, but did not eat a lot of it; however, my daughter really liked it! Located in the Cascade Locks and nearby Bridge of The Gods, the brewery and restaurant is right on the Columbia River. There's both inside and outside seating, but the real charm is experienced sitting with the view of the river and having some drinks and/or grub. Inside there is bar seating (limited), and then a bunch of tables. There's a section in the corner where they sell various clothing, glassware, and other items. Besides beer and ciders, they also serve limited wine, and also have non-alcholic beverages. It was a full day and night of adventure, otherwise I would have liked spending more time there.
