I'd seen the Speedway Artist Collective multiple times as I pass 16th and Lynhurst just about every time I make my way to US 36 (Rockville Road). The Speedway Artist Collective is a permanent program coming out of the Mars Hill Arts Center. MHAC has the mission of encouraging, supporting, and promoting local artists by giving them a place to sell their works. The founders of MHAC are from the Speedway area and have been committed to really promoting Indy's west side. Located in the end spot of a small strip center, Speedway Artist Collective is open limited hours. It's a non-profit shop featuring art from local artists. Speedway is obviously a racing-centered community, however, you can find much more here than racing themed items. The art has a diverse price range and you can easily find affordable art that also supports local artists. There are also classes here and I kind of fell in love with the "Free Little Art Gallery" out front (think "free library" but with art!). I might be exaggerating a bit to go 5-stars here, however, I don't think I am. I love the art work. I love the vibe. I love the community. I love the fact that you can introduce yourself to local artists and snag some art for the home. The sidewalks have curb cuts here. there's street parking alongside the building. You can enter through a single glass door that's level to the ground. Yes, there's a lot inside, however, I found it immensely workable and worth the effort. Given the limited hours, I'd be sure to check that they're open (hours may vary with special events). However, once I was finally able to stop in I fell in love with this little gem in Speedway.

She started painting furniture in her home, and now her business has grown into this beautiful shop. Brooke still paints furniture if you are considering updating an item. She painted a small cupboard for me and did a nice job. The shop is filled with gift items, home decor from furniture to soy candles, vases, greenery, pottery, mirrors, table lamps to floor lamps, Artisan tea towels, wooden lazy susan, artisan dessert plates to framed watercolors to name a just a few items. They even carry a few gifts for a new baby. You can purchase an adorable, sweet swaddling blanket and a precious "My First Snuggled Bunny." To cute!! However, what I do expect is decent customer service and a little help determining the best option I need for my car. When I walked in the guys behind the counter were busy helping others. Both men acknowledged me and proceeded on. Both men were very nice and pulled out the part I needed and explained the difference. I was very pleased with their service and explaining the choice where even I could explain to others. Since then I've popped in for wiper blades, car cleaning products, floor mats and several accessories. Hubby handles the serious car parts and he's been happy with their service as well. They do provide several free services and I've been very happy with my limited experiences.

Tom Killian started as a plastics teacher at Ben Davis. While there he created a pencil for a school fundraiser that could be bent into a shape. Now his family owned business makes 1,000's of shapes of pens and pencils as well as carrying 100's of additional products. They mostly focus on orders for companies, imprinting each item with the companies contact info and brand messages. Tom also loves being a guest speaker for schools and other organizations. I believe you can set up a factory tour, but only certain types of groups.

I have sadly noticed this is a habit with Ross locations from Peoria to Fort Wayne. I had barely started looking then noticed the line reaching near the middle of the store and walked out. Was expecting to find some good deals, had just had a chat earlier in the day about the big shoe sizes readily available here, good deals on athletic wear, and random quality selection of home goods. Corporate has been in and cleaned this location up, so it's got a better, brighter shoppable layout that makes way more sense. Customer service is right up front which is nice- no more treks to the back of the store for returns. We were also greeted upon entering, which I don't think I've ever been at this location.
