I was in a bind last weekend. My father had passed away recently, and the portrait we were going to use for his memorial went missing. I needed help, I needed a picture that captured the essence of who he was, at least in my eyes. I needed an artist, one who could take a small damaged black and white photograph of dear old dad and restore the beauty of a moment captured decades ago on the other side of the world. I had only hours to accomplish this and frantically searched online for a service to help me with this last minute problem. Fate led me to Von. It was a tall order given the short time line and the condition of the 2x2 photo I gave him to work with to produce a 16x16 portrait. It was close to closing time. I was struck by the gorgeous images on the walls of his establishment, each with their own powerful and unique statement. They gave me hope during a time when hopelessness seemed to be a recurring theme. Perhaps it was just an emotional time for me, there was barely a moment to breathe, let alone grieve, but it felt like I was meant to be there. Von not only showed his kindness and empathy, but his skill. He let me observe the process, asked for my input, it was like magic. I know what photoshop is, but his skill with it was impressive. Technical mastery filtered through the lens of an artist produced a portrait that was better than I had hoped for. As an artist who has some unusual requests when it comes to making prints of my work, I've always dreaded the process of finding a print shop willing to work with me on my projects. Just when you think the world is the darkest someone with light walks into your life and joy is restored: enter Von. I can't say how many times I did a search on the Internet for a professional printer and based on all the mixed reviews, I was left hesitant with no place to go. Then two days ago, on Friday, I stumbled upon Thomas Editions for the first time whose location is uncannily the closest to where I live. And on top of the consistent raves on Yelp is open on the weekends, which accommodates my work schedule. I called and Von picked up with what I now know are his characteristic good vibrations and I had an appointment 24-hours later. So, I enter his studio early while he is in session with a client, snapping away with my Leica Q2 Monochrom (which pics I will post when I get my memory card back from Von after he completes work for me) listening intently to the conversation. They are discussing a book the client will publish which process has been slowed down because the client can't get into the Louvre as he hasn't been Vaxed. Lol. I kid you not. This is the caliber of clients who seek out and are referred to Von. Now Von's studio resembles a museum. His own color prints that he has photographed are on the walls and they are magnificent. In fact, Von taught the first digital photography course at New York's International Center of Photography. He knows absolutely everything about photography, and is the salt of the earth, a true gem.
