Mochi donuts were so good! The flavors were prominent but not overwhelming. They had so many flavors to choose from, it was hard to choose only a few. The only drawback was the cashier had a difficult time understanding what we were ordering. Could've been new and wasn't familiar with the point of sale system. Overall, great selection of baked goods and hopefully the staff interaction next time is different

Baked goods (Jun 2026)

Third Culture Bakery is a popular LGBTQ-owned Southeast Asian bakery known for the original mochi muffin. All baked goods are 100% gluten-free since the opening of the bakery. Their mochi donut is a butter mochi-style donut that is baked and not fried. The bakery currently has two brick-and-mortar locations - a showroom in Berkeley and a matcha cafe in Walnut Creek. [Parking]: Easy and free street parking in this part of the neighborhood. [Atmosphere]: This is a takeout only bakery with limited outdoor chairs. Our party ended up eating baked goods in the car. [Menu]: Yelp's top highlighted items include Black Sesame Mochi Donut, Mochi Waffle, Ube Mochi Donut, Banana Bread Pudding, and Matcha Mochi Donut. *** Ube Mochi Donut ($3.75): Crunchy and chewy texture, but ube was a bit sweeter than I would have liked. Black Sesame Muffin ($4.75): Slightly better than the mochi donut, but black sesame flavor was not distinct enough. *** Overall a solid 3.5 stars for both donut and muffin.

Matcha Latte. Needs more matcha.

Been a long time customer. I love their mochi donuts. I used to get them at other local shops that sells their mochi muffins and donuts. I usually get guava, passionfruit donuts and their chocolate brownie muffin. I ordered their matcha and roasted matcha powder to make my drinks at home. Everyone loves them. I rarely get a chance to make it out to their store location, so I was excited. Got several mochi donuts, matcha powder for home and just matcha latte drinks. I was very disappointed in the drink itself. It was too sweet and very light matcha flavor. My friend also had the same drink and agreed. I asked the staff if they can add a bit more matcha, but they said it would be an extra charge. Fair, but for a known matcha place, my expectation was high. I expected to have more matcha in it. Ended up adding more when I got home. Probably won't get plain matcha latte again. Picture attached - milky green.

I love Hawaiian mochi and this place uses the same concept for donuts and muffins and they are both filling and delicious! I love the variety of flavors including passion fruit, pandan, and ube. The service was also fantastic, long line but quick.

Cute store. Very clean. I like that they display each donut and muffin in the case with its name and price (vs just a list of flavors on a menu) so you can see exactly what you're getting. The lady at the counter was super nice and personable. She was easy to talk to and friendly. She asked if we wanted our treats warmed up but since I was taking mine home, she recommended to heat it up for 45 seconds at home. Thank you!! I ordered: * black sesame mochi muffin - nice chew, great sesame flavor, and not too sweet * churro mochi muffin - covered in cinnamon sugar, so good. Great texture as well. * banana bread pudding - looks so ooey and gooey! I took an edge piece because I like the chewy crispy texture. Love to return when I'm back in the area.

I have heard great things about third culture and was excited to give it a try while I was in the area. The bakery is cute and they definitely appeal to all the new trends with their packaging and flavors. I was really intrigued by a lot of the mochi muffin flavors like ube, red velvet, black sesame, and matcha. They have really cool Asian flavors for their mochi muffins and mochi donuts. Based on the employees recommendation, I got the ube muffin. It was just okay- not as strong of an ube flavor as I expected and I think the texture just wasn't my thing. The mango matcha was nice and refreshing, but it was a little sweeter than I prefer and the mango overpowered the matcha flavor. I wouldn't rush back but may stop by to try some more things if I were in the area.

Cool spot in a tucked away area of Berkeley. Yummy mochi donuts and yummy Asian flavored drinks. We got Thai tea and pandan donuts and lychee strawberry soda. The staff were efficient and friendly. Definitely a good spot to hang out and have a coffee in some sun.

Absolutely amazing donuts and muffins! So chewy and flavorful, and with so many flavors to choose from everyone will definitely find one that fits their palate. Personally enjoyed the salted egg yolk donut the best.

Spent a day in Berkeley and Third Culture Bakery was our first stop! Came around 1pm and some items were already sold out, so we picked up the Raspberry Lychee Butter Mochi donut, Buko Pandan Butter Mochi donut, Ube Mochi Muffin, and the Salted Egg Yolk Mochi donut. My friend also ordered the Black Sesame Matcha which was ready after 5 minutes. Limited indoor and outdoor seating available. Loved the chewy, dense mochi texture! My favorite items were the mochi donuts as the different frostings on top made them stand out. The Ube Mochi Muffin had good ube flavor and was not overly sweet. This was my first time trying Salted Egg Yolk and it wasn't my cup of tea, but it was well made so if you are a fan of that flavor, you would enjoy this item. Friend said the matcha was pricey but good quality. I will for sure be back! Next time, earlier in the day to be able to try more of the donuts that had sold out.

Way too dense for my liking

Date of visit: 4/19/2026, a day after Cal Day 2026 I might be in the minority here, but I really did not enjoy the baked goods. I made a stop before heading back to LA after Cal Day, specifically to try their mochi donuts and a mochi muffin, and unfortunately both were much too dense for my liking. The moment I had to put effort into cutting through them, I knew this was not the type of mochi donut I would enjoy. To me, a great mochi donut should be light, airy, and chewy. These were much heavier and denser than what I personally prefer. Honestly, until this visit, I did not even realize there were such different styles of mochi donuts. Maybe I have just been spoiled by the many amazing mochi donuts I have had in Southern California and Japan, because those have completely set the standard for me. The mochi muffin unfortunately had the same heavy, dense texture. If that is your thing, you may enjoy it, but for me, both the donuts and muffin were not what I look for in baked goods.

I got the Roasted Strawberry Lychee Matcha Latte. As usual, the staff is very friendly. The shop is clean and they have matcha to purchase. Thanks for a great experience!

pretty good and refreshing! Texture is true to a latte, and not really creamy. Hojicha was a good nutty flavor. line was out the door, but not too bad of a wait. The space is very small inside, but there's seating outside

My friend has tried this place numerous times. I decided to try their limited mango matcha latte with ceremonial matcha. There was a short line. The employee took our order. There was another worker whisking up matcha for another order. The matcha lattes came out in a timely manner. For my mango matcha, it had good creamy mango flavor. Matcha was good as well, maybe it could've been a little deeper in flavor for me. Overall, a good mango matcha latte.

Third Culture Bakery - Berkeley Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Third Culture Bakery - Berkeley

Per the Q&A, there have been no vegan food options thus far, does anyone know if there are any vegan pastries now (Dec 2024)?

Do they have vegan donuts?

Hello, not to sure but I know that everything is gluten free. Their counter products Are also like the Alfajores. I hope this helps. RR-:)

Are these donuts gluten free?

Yes!

How long are the donuts good for thinking about ordering some for a party?

They said about 2 days. I agree 2 days tops.

How long is the line to wait?

Around 5 minutes!

Anything vegan on the menu?

Yes

How should I store these donuts? How long will they stay fresh?

Freeze them in an airtight container. Thaw when ready to eat. They go stale in about a day.

Hi I'm creating two donut walls for my grads. What is the width measurement of the donuts?

On the small end (closer to 3inches, definitely not more than 4inches)

How long is the wait time for drinks typically on weekends?

It depends. You can be lucky and have no wait, as happened to me, but moments later the line was out the door.

Are there no donuts during the week? What is the best time to go during the week if parking is limited?

There are definitely donuts during the week. There is free street parking and you can definitely find a spot, if not in front then on neighboring streets.

Are there any vegan dessert options?

Will it be open on July 4?

Nope!

Outside of 10-4 where else can I get their flavored donuts?

I found some at Boba Guys. And their muffins (matcha, mochi and another one) were also served at Teance Fine Teas in Berkeley.

Are they open Memorial Day Monday?

Yes according to their Instagram 10-4pm.

Does anyone know how much anything costs? There is no amount on anything on the menu nor does it mention the price of the baked goods.

Mochi donuts are $3.00-3.25 (depends on if it's regular or seasonal flavor) and the mochi muffins and custard cakes are $3.75.

Can the nutritional facts be provided?

Oh the people there are super kind and helpful I am sure if you ask for it they will provide you with the nutritional facts. Now you are making me curious hahaha!

Are there vegan options?

Nope! I asked them last month. Feb 2019

Where can you get these Mochi donuts or waffles in SF?

there are now two locations in sf, one in the mission on Valencia, and one in the sunset on Irving 😊

Is there seating inside?

No. Just outside seating.

Is Third Culture open on NYE?

Nope, they reopen January 3rd (says this on their recent Instagram post).

I've visited elaichi twice since in the area already and I plan on going back again. My first visit was on a Monday morning with a friend. I ordered the Banana Chai Einspanner (chai with banana sea salt cold foam) with oat milk and the Aloo Tiki Paratha Roll (potato fritter with cilantro chutney, red onion and garlic yogurt). My friend ordered a hot latte and the Paratha Quiche (tomato, red onion, Serrano and cilantro). We also shared a piece of Pistachio Cake. The Banana Chai Einspanner is simply the best drink I have ever had in my entire life. I am truly not kidding. It is so decadent, smooth, spicy, fresh. This is the best drink to grace this plant. My friend was really happy with her latte as well. I wouldn't say it strikes the "classic chai" chord, as this is incredibly sweet, so if you're looking for that, I would select a more basic option on the menu. It's also worth noting, the Banana Chai is a seasonal option for the summer. As for the food, everything was delicious. The Pistachio Cake was moist and had such great flavor. The crusts on both of our savory dishes were so flaky! I visited again on a Tuesday morning (yes the next day) and ordered the Banana Chai Einspanner once again and the quiche. Both were as delicious as the first time around. And the product isn't it all. The staff at elaichi are incredibly friendly. Even when the shop was busy on the Monday morning, we were taken care of with respect and care. I can tell the staff also have good relationships with those in the community. The atmosphere of elaichi is also lovely. There is plenty of seating inside and outside and a raised countertop for folks who want to work but stand up. This is a must visit!!!

We tried several of the specialty lattes and were into them all. Particularly memorable to me was the Jaffa Orange latte. I had to order a pourover here and loved the experience. The barista was very precise in brewing and explained a bit about the coffee before serving it to me in an elegant glass. I got the pink bourbon from Palestina, Colombia that had notes of pink lemonade and rhubarb. It was well brewed and tasty but my sense is that the beans for pourover could be roasted lighter to get more of the fruit flavor out. I was really looking for a juicier pourover and feel like they have the right bean and the right brewers, just need to roast the coffee a little differently. It's a bit nitpicky though, because honestly, it was the best pourover "experience" I've had in the Bay Area, by far. I think this is also one of the most beautiful coffee shops I've visited. Worth waiting in that line? For me personally, no, but it was a well made latte and quite smooth. Was it the best latte I have ever had? No but it was a good one and I think it would be easier to discern the true quality with a straight espresso shot or even a cappuccino. I like my lattes to have a little more character from the beans but well made. My favorite thing about it was actually the temperature. It wasn't crazy hot so you could actually enjoy it instantly. Some may want it hotter but for me it was ideal. They do have seasonal drinks including a pumpkin spice latte for fall and solid selection of non coffee drinks. The almond croissant I had (not baked by them I don't think) was good but a bit too crispy and over baked . I think I have been spoilt by the very excellent croissants of San Francisco and have yet to find an amazing one in the East Bay but it was clearly made with good butter and lots of almonds. Plenty of seating although every inside table was taken by people; some outside tables were open. They also have a solid selection of local beans for sale. Overall, a solid shop but don't come if you're in a hurry.

That, however, shouldn't detract from the personalized experience you'd likely receive with how small the coffee bar is. If you're expecting something more permanent this coffee shop is more like a temporary coffee cart that has roots in the back corner of this gift shop On the whole this place despite the hidden location has folks very much eager to bring specialty coffee to anybody interested. They have a large selection of relatively high end coffee in the likes of Geisha from Panama and Ethiopian coffees. Additionally, they're the only place I've ever seen across the US that is showcasing any coffee grown in China which is nice to see as that allows more exploration into how the terroir affects the taste of coffee For my first time here I came with a small group of coffee enthusiasts so we tried a selection of their Alo Main Station (notes of Sweet Orange, Bergamont, and Peach Oolong Tea), Finca Santa Maria (notes of Cherry, Mango, and Berry Jam), and Lerida Loma Washed (notes of White Floral, Mandarin Orange, and Longan) Each cup was uniquely different from each other but arguably the most enjoyed was their cheapest option in the Alo Main Station at $9. Each cup seemed completely different and may seem pretentious to say but they did have sweeter notes that you'd be very unlikely to taste from your well known coffee chains. This place definitely caters to the coffee enthusiasts in a way where even my group wasn't quite near the level of but it had a great atmosphere, nice outdoor seating, and staff who were very passionate about their craft If anything, I would probably come back as they do elevate coffee for those who are unaware of coffee coming from China but that coffee doesn't need to taste bitter, burnt, or chocolatey. The cups here were more like tasting a mellowed fruit juice but it just happens to be coffee. That said, unless you are eager to try specialty coffee this place may seem overpriced as their pour overs are between $9 - $25 which heavily differs from most other coffee shops. Having Masterpiece provide a glimpse of the specialty coffee scene within the Bay Area is still a welcome blessing as it has a similar vibe to specialty coffee shops you'd experience in Asia

Since my husband was doing an iced Shiro, I went with a hot version of the Kuro. We both got whole milk rather than oat milk. While I loved both options the Kuro was definitely my favorite and did not disappoint. There's some seating options outside to enjoy your coffee and tons of vintage items to browse through inside while you wait for your coffee.
