Mochi donuts were so good! The flavors were prominent but not overwhelming. They had so many flavors to choose from, it was hard to choose only a few. The only drawback was the cashier had a difficult time understanding what we were ordering. Could've been new and wasn't familiar with the point of sale system. Overall, great selection of baked goods and hopefully the staff interaction next time is different

I love Hawaiian mochi and this place uses the same concept for donuts and muffins and they are both filling and delicious! I love the variety of flavors including passion fruit, pandan, and ube. The service was also fantastic, long line but quick.

I have heard great things about third culture and was excited to give it a try while I was in the area. The bakery is cute and they definitely appeal to all the new trends with their packaging and flavors. I was really intrigued by a lot of the mochi muffin flavors like ube, red velvet, black sesame, and matcha. They have really cool Asian flavors for their mochi muffins and mochi donuts. Based on the employees recommendation, I got the ube muffin. It was just okay- not as strong of an ube flavor as I expected and I think the texture just wasn't my thing. The mango matcha was nice and refreshing, but it was a little sweeter than I prefer and the mango overpowered the matcha flavor. I wouldn't rush back but may stop by to try some more things if I were in the area.

Been a long time customer. I love their mochi donuts. I used to get them at other local shops that sells their mochi muffins and donuts. I usually get guava, passionfruit donuts and their chocolate brownie muffin. I ordered their matcha and roasted matcha powder to make my drinks at home. Everyone loves them. I rarely get a chance to make it out to their store location, so I was excited. Got several mochi donuts, matcha powder for home and just matcha latte drinks. I was very disappointed in the drink itself. It was too sweet and very light matcha flavor. My friend also had the same drink and agreed. I asked the staff if they can add a bit more matcha, but they said it would be an extra charge. Fair, but for a known matcha place, my expectation was high. I expected to have more matcha in it. Ended up adding more when I got home. Probably won't get plain matcha latte again. Picture attached - milky green.

Third Culture Bakery is a popular LGBTQ-owned Southeast Asian bakery known for the original mochi muffin. All baked goods are 100% gluten-free since the opening of the bakery. Their mochi donut is a butter mochi-style donut that is baked and not fried. The bakery currently has two brick-and-mortar locations - a showroom in Berkeley and a matcha cafe in Walnut Creek. [Parking]: Easy and free street parking in this part of the neighborhood. [Atmosphere]: This is a takeout only bakery with limited outdoor chairs. Our party ended up eating baked goods in the car. [Menu]: Yelp's top highlighted items include Black Sesame Mochi Donut, Mochi Waffle, Ube Mochi Donut, Banana Bread Pudding, and Matcha Mochi Donut. *** Ube Mochi Donut ($3.75): Crunchy and chewy texture, but ube was a bit sweeter than I would have liked. Black Sesame Muffin ($4.75): Slightly better than the mochi donut, but black sesame flavor was not distinct enough. *** Overall a solid 3.5 stars for both donut and muffin.

Cool spot in a tucked away area of Berkeley. Yummy mochi donuts and yummy Asian flavored drinks. We got Thai tea and pandan donuts and lychee strawberry soda. The staff were efficient and friendly. Definitely a good spot to hang out and have a coffee in some sun.

Way too dense for my liking

Date of visit: 4/19/2026, a day after Cal Day 2026 I might be in the minority here, but I really did not enjoy the baked goods. I made a stop before heading back to LA after Cal Day, specifically to try their mochi donuts and a mochi muffin, and unfortunately both were much too dense for my liking. The moment I had to put effort into cutting through them, I knew this was not the type of mochi donut I would enjoy. To me, a great mochi donut should be light, airy, and chewy. These were much heavier and denser than what I personally prefer. Honestly, until this visit, I did not even realize there were such different styles of mochi donuts. Maybe I have just been spoiled by the many amazing mochi donuts I have had in Southern California and Japan, because those have completely set the standard for me. The mochi muffin unfortunately had the same heavy, dense texture. If that is your thing, you may enjoy it, but for me, both the donuts and muffin were not what I look for in baked goods.

I got the Roasted Strawberry Lychee Matcha Latte. As usual, the staff is very friendly. The shop is clean and they have matcha to purchase. Thanks for a great experience!

Spent a day in Berkeley and Third Culture Bakery was our first stop! Came around 1pm and some items were already sold out, so we picked up the Raspberry Lychee Butter Mochi donut, Buko Pandan Butter Mochi donut, Ube Mochi Muffin, and the Salted Egg Yolk Mochi donut. My friend also ordered the Black Sesame Matcha which was ready after 5 minutes. Limited indoor and outdoor seating available. Loved the chewy, dense mochi texture! My favorite items were the mochi donuts as the different frostings on top made them stand out. The Ube Mochi Muffin had good ube flavor and was not overly sweet. This was my first time trying Salted Egg Yolk and it wasn't my cup of tea, but it was well made so if you are a fan of that flavor, you would enjoy this item. Friend said the matcha was pricey but good quality. I will for sure be back! Next time, earlier in the day to be able to try more of the donuts that had sold out.

My friend has tried this place numerous times. I decided to try their limited mango matcha latte with ceremonial matcha. There was a short line. The employee took our order. There was another worker whisking up matcha for another order. The matcha lattes came out in a timely manner. For my mango matcha, it had good creamy mango flavor. Matcha was good as well, maybe it could've been a little deeper in flavor for me. Overall, a good mango matcha latte.

I got a mango matcha latte, I think it is seasonal. The staff was kind and talked about their mochi muffins and donuts. The staff carefully made each drink, which I appreciated. There is a bench inside to wait, but the place is more grab and go. Would definitely return.

Caramel Matcha Latte Ube Mochi Muffin Service was good. Inside was nice. But that's all it got for me. I tried to give Matcha another shot but I just can't get behind it. It's not my thing so I couldn't finish the drink. That Ube Mochi Muffin was good but it barely tasted like Ube. If something is Ube, I personally want the flavor to be there. It wasn't anything. That's so unfortunate. It's not for me. 3/5

Love the matcha here! By far one of my favorite places to go! The drinks are always consistent and delicious, and I absolutely love the pastries--they're fresh and flavorful every time. The service is great. This location is usually busy, but the staff always make sure the drinks are prepared perfectly. Everyone is friendly and welcoming. There is only street parking hard to find parking when it's busy. The ambiance is beautiful and thoughtfully decorated. There's limited seating inside, but plenty of outdoor seating available. I do wish they would expand to the Oakland, San Leandro, and Hayward areas--I'd love to see them grow there one day! 10/10, highly recommend. I'll definitely continue supporting this business!

Ask the Community - Third Culture Bakery - Berkeley

Per the Q&A, there have been no vegan food options thus far, does anyone know if there are any vegan pastries now (Dec 2024)?

    Do they have vegan donuts?

Hello, not to sure but I know that everything is gluten free. Their counter products Are also like the Alfajores. I hope this helps. RR-:)

    Are these donuts gluten free?

    Yes!

How long are the donuts good for thinking about ordering some for a party?

They said about 2 days. I agree 2 days tops.

How long is the line to wait?

    Around 5 minutes!

    Anything vegan on the menu?

    Yes

How should I store these donuts? How long will they stay fresh?

Freeze them in an airtight container. Thaw when ready to eat. They go stale in about a day.

Hi I'm creating two donut walls for my grads. What is the width measurement of the donuts?

On the small end (closer to 3inches, definitely not more than 4inches)

How long is the wait time for drinks typically on weekends?

It depends. You can be lucky and have no wait, as happened to me, but moments later the line was out the door.

Are there no donuts during the week? What is the best time to go during the week if parking is limited?

There are definitely donuts during the week. There is free street parking and you can definitely find a spot, if not in front then on neighboring streets.

Are there any vegan dessert options?

Will it be open on July 4?

    Nope!

Outside of 10-4 where else can I get their flavored donuts?

I found some at Boba Guys. And their muffins (matcha, mochi and another one) were also served at Teance Fine Teas in Berkeley.

Are they open Memorial Day Monday?

Yes according to their Instagram 10-4pm.

Does anyone know how much anything costs? There is no amount on anything on the menu nor does it mention the price of the baked goods.

Mochi donuts are $3.00-3.25 (depends on if it's regular or seasonal flavor) and the mochi muffins and custard cakes are $3.75.

Can the nutritional facts be provided?

Oh the people there are super kind and helpful I am sure if you ask for it they will provide you with the nutritional facts. Now you are making me curious hahaha!

    Are there vegan options?

Nope! I asked them last month. Feb 2019

Where can you get these Mochi donuts or waffles in SF?

there are now two locations in sf, one in the mission on Valencia, and one in the sunset on Irving 😊

    Is there seating inside?

    No. Just outside seating.

Is Third Culture open on NYE?

Nope, they reopen January 3rd (says this on their recent Instagram post).

I finally decided to go inside and think I went a little crazy with ordering.. As you get inside, there are 2 kiosks that you can order on and the ordering process is pretty simple. I got all my food to-go and the wait was about 10 mins or less, so pretty quick! The service was awesome as well! The guy saw me struggling trying to carry all the food, drinks, and my IPad (I got stuff from the gas station prior) and he offered to help and put my drinks in this holder. I ordered the Tiger brown sugar milk tea w/ boba pearls, Hot Cheetos Half N Half corn dog (comes with choice of dipping, I got mustard), 8 piece fried dumplings (comes with soy sauce), fruity pebbles mochi donut, and the strawberry and banana nutella croffle. The milk tea was super good, could never go wrong with a brown sugar milk tea! The hot Cheetos corn dog was crispy and super good as well, however I wish I had eaten it when it was still hot to get that cheese pull... the fried dumplings were crispy and delicious. The fruity pebbles mochi donut was really soft and chewy (in a good way) and had the flavor of a glazed donut. Also the cereal tasted fresh! The strawberry/ banana Nutella croffle was so delicious and tasted like a strawberry/ banana waffle. I think this one had to be my fave. Overall, I paid a little under $40 with tip for all the food and I would definitely go again!

Their sandwiches are probably what first got me hooked. The bread is so good, with a chewy inside and a nice crust, and the fillings are always fresh and flavorful. The combinations are also really well thought out. From there, I started working my way through the rest of the menu. I've had their Kouign Amann, Quiche Lorraine, croissants, baguette, Sourdough Batard, Sunflower Rye Spelt, pretzel buns (you can probably tell I'm a bread person), pies, seasonal radicchio salad, and passionfruit madeleines. Their seasonal radicchio salad has actually become one of my favorites to take to work for lunch. I also love that they rotate the Kouign Amann flavors, so there's usually something new to try whenever I stop by. I've enjoyed almost everything I've had here. One pie was a little too sweet for me personally, but that's really the only thing that comes to mind. I also really like the presentation and the atmosphere. The pastry case always looks beautiful and tempting, and the space feels relaxed and welcoming. It's easy to pop in and grab something, but it's also a nice place to meet friends for coffee and something sweet. The prices feel very reasonable for the quality, which is another reason I keep coming back. More than anything, I just really enjoy having Starter Bakery in the area. The ambiance is wonderful - I absolutely love the deep blue color scheme, the cute matching mugs, and gorgeous plants. They have a lot of different pastry choices, but unfortunately, there was only one vegan option: a tiny hazelnut sweet bread. I ordered the bread along with an Americano. When I tried to take the pastry out of the package to share it with my girlfriend, it completely crumbled into a big mess. I went up to the counter to let them know, and the employee told me it was actually meant to be eaten straight from the package. She mentioned it was on the drier side being vegan, she took the crumbled mess and gave me a new one but it ended up having the exact same issue. It wasnt dry, but it just wouldn't hold any moisture and was far too crumbly to eat. For $5, this tiny pastry was a major letdown. To make the interaction weirder, she took the original crumbled bread back from me and I'm only assuming threw it away, which felt entirely unnecessary. Having been vegan for nine years, I've had some truly amazing, moist vegan baked goods, so this was incredibly disappointing. While the vibe and aesthetic are great, the vegan options were major letdown. CC accepted Restroom available

Thus my journey with Walter began. One thing about me, is I respect a place that knows flavors. I don't want basic vanilla, give me some weird and strange and flavorful that will tantalize my palette and ignite my senses. Give me salty and sweet. Give me TANG. Give me these things and DONT give me gas. Bad Walters cracked the code. All flavor, real dairy, no lactose, no gas. Each week they have a different batch of flavors, so there's always something new to explore. There's like 6 flavors to choose from at once and they let me try them all before I selected my choice hehe. I tried to sample 6 flavors at Cold Stone and they took me out back and shot me, but here, nobody was mean to me. Mr. Potatohead is the flavor I landed on--brown sugar custard with peanut butter swirl and chocolate covered potato chips.
