I heard so many good things about the Mochi donuts and muffins that I needed to try. There's a base and then a variety of glazes you can choose from. I got a dozen mochi donuts and half a dozen mochi muffins. I was on the biggest mochi donut kick and these are unlike any of the others! These donuts are very dense so eating a dozen in one sitting is not possible. I prefer the lighter style but the flavors were interesting. I liked Vietnamese coffee the best and the fruity flavors were pretty tangy. The mochi muffins had the same denseness but I like the slight savory flavors like the everything muffin. Next time, I would stick to just trying a couple than buying a whole box but it was really fun to try! read more

We got the mango-passion fruit & ube-coconut mochi donuts. Both had a butter mochi base which gave them a nice extravagant mouth-feel. The passion fruit was overpowering the mango in the first donut so it was a bit sour - it was nice having the chocolate chips to counter the sourness. Mm, yes. mochi muffins and donuts on point. They have such unique flavaflavs such as guava, passionfruit and matcha, even thai tea! I've had them at Boba guys in the past and at other coffee shops. Pairs well with coffee or boba that's for sure. The texture of their mochi sweets are dense yet, soft and chewy. I usually get about 4 or 5 items when I go to their shop. During the beginning they mainly sold just the mochi donuts and muffins, but since then they've added more things such as a mochi waffle and a mini series of matcha drinks. I tried their roasted matcha with caramel and it was good. Not too matcha-y and overpowering and paired well with the caramel. Their items are on the pricey side to be prepared to drop at least $10-20 when you're at their actual store. The quality is topnotch tho and their mochi is pretty filling. There's always at least 5 flavaflavs to choose from and they also have seasonal flavs. Glad that they're available at more coffee and boba shops now. I saw my friend come here a few months ago and kept it in my bookmarks for whenever I was in the area. Their menu is pretty wide in terms of variety of flavors for their desserts and drinks so this place was definitely on my to-try list. There's plenty of parking around as it's pretty secluded from other restaurants and we only waited about 10 minutes in line on a Sunday afternoon. I'm guessing they're known for their mochi donuts but I would absolutely pass on these next time. These are sold by the piece, ranging from $3-4 each. They were so dense and slight oily, the frosting was super light so the donut wasn't sweet enough, and the overall bite was just not satisfying- my friends felt the same way. The cashier told me these would be good for 2-3 days at room temp but I noticed it got super soggy after sitting out for 1 full day. I highly prefer the mochi donut options I have back in San Jose as they are so much more fluffy and delicate compared to here. I got the Roasted Strawberry Lychee Matcha Latte with oat milk(+$1) and it tasted like a black sesame matcha latte because it tasted like peanut butter to me. Nothing wrong with that since I love black sesame, but I preferred my friend's regular Strawberry Lychee Matcha Latte more. My other friend got a Matcha Latte with soy milk and she liked hers a lot, but to me it tasted like straight soy and no matcha. Although these drinks were good, I would not drive here just to get it nor would I get if it I was in the area again. Overall, being exposed to so many mochi donuts and strawberry matcha lattes in South Bay, I think I would pass on coming here again. Came here 20 minutes before closing and Quinn kindly greeted my sister and I. It was our first time there and Quinn answered all of our questions. He was highly knowledgeable of the most popular items and could describe what each Matcha drink would taste like. Mind you, there are quite a few different matcha drinks to choose from. I ended up getting the strawberry mochi donut, original matcha, and we shared the yuzu lemon and original mochi muffin. It was quite delicious and had the texture of Filipino bibingka which I devoured. The original matcha was okay. Only thing I would recommend are better straws. I love this place. I developed a gluten allergy about two years ago, and the hardest thing to find are baked goods. Most attempts at replicating wheat fall short due to a strange texture or different flavor. Where Third Culture exceeds is that they make no attempt to replicate bread; their desserts are a different idea entirely, and it tastes great. I prefer the fruitier flavors like yuzu or raspberry, while my partner prefers creamier flavors like dulce de leche. Luckily, they always have a handful of both. The matcha tastes great and you can watch them make it at the counter. The service is also great. Went here with my mom based on the reviews and wanting to support a local shop but we experienced the opposite. The staff wasn't friendly & the drinks weren't great. Maybe if I would've ordered something different but the atmosphere when we walked in seemed like they didn't want or care that we were there when everyone else who was walking in was getting a hello or immediate attention. I personally prefer the muffins over the donuts, which don't have the typical shape of 8 connected dough balls like the mochi donuts you'll find at other shops, and my absolute favorite is the original mochi muffin because of its brown butter, caramel flavor and dense, chewy texture. But one flavor's never enough, so I usually go for the matcha, ube, and black sesame ones too. The flavors are strong but not overwhelming. I was surprised at how heavy my 6-pack box was! They used to sell their mochi treats through some boba and coffee shops in the South Bay, so I'm hoping one day they'll restart that again down here or expand with a location in the South Bay. After seeing feedmeimei (a Bay Area based Instagram food blogger) rave about this bakery, I couldn't help but try it out myself. After all, I live in Berkeley, so it's just a hop, skip, and a jump away. I'm writing this review almost 8 hours after my visit, and I still can't stop thinking about their mochi muffins. My friend and I ordered the og and ube muffin and both were divine. The original muffin had a subtle coconut flavor which I believe is due to the pandan. The ube muffin had a nuanced ube flavor and carried a subtle savoriness to it which I really enjoyed. Both muffins were perfectly sweetened and had that quintessential bouncy mochi texture. Overall, if you're a fan of mochi, this is a MUST GET. The matcha drinks were also soo good. I had the matcha strawberry lychee sparkler, which was also not too sweet and had an excellent, robust matcha flavor. Never had sparkling matcha before, but safe to say, I'm now hooked. My friend had the matcha strawberry latte with oat milk which was also soo delicious. I have been following Third Culture on IG for a minute now and finally had a chance to try them out. Their mochi donuts -unlike Mochill- are filled with mochi, this may be an unpopular opinion but that is WAY too much mochi for me. Flavors are still good though. I had the yuzu and vietnamese coffee. Yuzu is sweet and tart, and Vietnamese coffee tastes more like a coffee candy. I was intrigued by the Shin Matcha and the staff suggested to taste it in its original state which is in distilled water so I took him up on his suggestion. What I ended up with tasted like unsweetened matcha on iced tap water. Refreshing and interesting? Sure....but can I get some milk and sugar in here? Welp, at least I tried it. I've had mochi donuts from Third Culture Bakery, but they were resold at a partner coffee shop, boba shop, or bakery in the South Bay. The exposure to Third Culture Bakery had made me a fan since. When the opportunity rose to go to the brick-and-mortar location while my friend and I were in Berkeley, there was no doubt that we were going. We arrived at Third Culture Bakery around 10:30am on a Sunday morning. The line was out the door, but it was moving at an OK pace. We probably waited 15 minutes until we finally reached the front of the ordering line. What's great about going to the actual storefront is getting the variety of donuts that other 3rd party places don't have. Third Culture Bakery even had seasonal flavors. I also found out that they served things besides mochi donuts and muffins, including savory and sweet waffles. I ordered the guava cheesecake donut, Vietnamese Coffee donut, banana caramel donut, and the churro muffin. All of the items were good in their own ways, but there were certainly ones that stood out over others. The banana caramel, for example, was the best. I loved the strong banana flavor. Although the Vietnamese Coffee donut tasted like coffee, I didn't think it specifically resembled cafe sua da at all. The guava cheesecake was a bit too tart for my liking. I ate my donuts cold, but I'm willing to bet that they would've been more amazing if they were slightly warmed up - especially the churro muffin. Was in the neighbourhood and fancied a coffee and kind of wish I hadn't bothered with Third Culture. All I asked for was an iced latte with whatever plant milk. What I got was a basic cold brew thing over ice for $5.20 with an inedibly sweet amount of honey added "because that's how we do it here." Cold brew does not make lattes. Couldn't tell if staff were being friendly or patronising as they were more invested in talking amongst themselves. Good thing I'm not a strict vegan considering the obligatory honey. Noted that their doughnuts are tiny for the $3 or so bucks they each cost, like half the size of those from Timeless. Should have checked first that it was a proper café so that's my bad, but won't be back. Cute bright pink space inside though, and lots of industrial concrete seating outdoors (with no shade, see photo). ETA I had no idea until reading other reviews that the owners of this place tried trademarking mochi muffins and then hassled other sellers with cease and desists, how utterly gross and neoliberal. The taste of the burnt caramel was perfect and I loved getting some globs of it from the bottom of my drink. I got it with oat milk and it was the perfect choice. "Original" muffin: I'm so glad I went with this recommendation. This muffin doesn't sound too good, but it was actually delicious. It was sweet, savory, nutty and butter-y all at the same time! Finally got to try this trendy spot I had book marked for years. They do a fabulous job on their matchas. Super creative! I am a bit overwhelmed by the menu, but a quick ask to the worker and I was on my way. I came a week before christmas and they were giving away brownie/chocolate peppermint mochi cupcakes! Not my fav, as the brownie cupcake was super dense in chocolate flavor. Not as moist as I'd like for it to be, but I do understand the challenge working with such flavors. The mochi donuts were off the hook. They have so many flavors and seriously I mean it when I say so many flavors. On that particular day alone, I saw mango passionbruit, ube coconut, strawberry creme, dark chocolate, guava cheesecake, and matcha white chocolate, peppermint pretzel, raspberry lychee, mexi chocolate, vietnamese coffee and others. That's a lot to make for a shop as such that doesn't just make donuts! I got the viet coffee mochi donut of course, along with a lychee strawberry mocha! The lychee was funky to me but it wasn't gross. Very unique spin to a matcha drink! The donuts were light and chewy, just like how it should be! I always see Third Culture Bakery's mochi muffins or drinks on Instagram, so I know how popular they are, and was expecting them to be mostly sold out when we arrived just a couple hours before closing time. Luckily they had a ton of pastries left and a wider variety of drinks than I thought! There was a line but it went by fast, it just looked long from the outside because only 1-2 parties can be ordering inside at one time. We waited about 10 mins maximum from arrival to getting our drinks, and there are plenty of places to sit outside and enjoy your treats. It seemed like strawberry lychee was their special flavor because it happened to be in a lot of their drinks. I'm not a lychee fan at all but I love a good matcha strawberry drink so I went for it, with oat milk. Luckily for me the lychee wasn't too overpowering but it's definitely present in the drink. The matcha was made the right way and nicely whisked to smooth perfection. I saw some other people walk out with hojicha lattes and passionfruit drinks and I definitely want to get those next time. Although I've had their mochi muffins at another location before, I knew we couldn't leave here without one! I got the matcha flavor which was delicious as expected, and my husband got the Vietnamese coffee mochi donut. But the winner was the banana caramel mochi muffin bread pudding. Think bread pudding thickness, but chewy like mochi and flavor like banana bread. The house burnt caramel and sea salt flakes are the perfect touch. I kinda wish we got more of that for the road! Hmm I think maybe food has changed so much since these first came onto the scene... these didn't really excite me. There are a lot of Asian-style desserts around now and I felt the flavor was weak in both muffins we got (matcha and black sesame). If you want legit matcha flavor there are lots of places in the bay that can give you that. As far as mochi desserts go, the texture was there but again, at this point it's not very novel whereas it might've been in 2016. My first time here so I had to ask the question - what's the difference between a muffin and donut? The guy thoroughly explained that the muffins have the flavor dispersed and more of a chew, while the donut is the same butter mochi as the base and the different flavors are the glaze on top. Muffins -original: my favorite of the three that I tried. The coconut pandan flavor was the most pronounced -black sesame, ube: good but the flavors of each could be stronger Donuts -mango passion fruit: bright and tart, big flavor bursting in my mouth. toss-up between this one and the yuzu as my favorite -yuzu: fragrant and tart, also bursting with lemony flavor -Vietnamese coffee: my least favorite. Too sweet and not a lot of coffee flavor I don't love mochi donuts/muffins but these were solid. My family and I had fun cutting up each flavor and trying bite of each. Roasted matcha (specifically the strawberry lychee one) is where it's at! I love their mochi muffins. They're chewy and bouncy just as you expect mochi to be. I haven't tried all of the flavors yet but I've had the ube and the original and I actually like the original flavor the most. Cute little shop, street parking hasn't been a problem the past few times I've been here! The kimchi waffle was so interesting, good, but I may just stick with their sweet items. This weekend I stopped by to try their summer guava roasted matcha and guava mochi waffle, for half off (seasonal offer). The guava drink was not the best, the drink tasted like a yogurt drink because the guava was so tart, which is not exactly what I wanted. I've been to Third Culture Bakery twice during the pandemic, and I have to say, this is my favorite bakery for everything mochi! The savory muffin is a MUST. I've never had a savory muffin before, and this is an item I will come back for time and time again - cheesy, with a nice kick. On the sweet side, their banana bread pudding is delicious, churro mochi was just like a Disneyland churro with a chewy inside, and their ube, matcha, and original mochi muffins all yummy as well. We also ordered the burnt caramel matcha latte and regular matcha latte with soy; I love the variety of drinks that Third Culture Bakery offers, but their matcha lattes are my fave. Now that the weather is getting warmer, I'm sure we'll see plenty of customers sitting out front on their bench. small, cute, modern bakery for asian and hawaiian inspired baked goods and beverages :) prices are a bit high for what you get, but i would recommend it if you want to try something different for dessert - they definitely have flavors and textures that other dessert places don't have! also, service was quick and very friendly! one thing to note is that they don't have indoor seating that i saw, they do have stools outside that you can sit and eat on but it's not really a spot you can loiter around or do work at. it would be a good spot to pick up desserts for a gathering or something though! i had three butter mochi donuts (the thai tea, yuzu lemon, and guava flavored ones) which are a butter mochi base with flavored icing on top! i like the dense texture - it's not as chewy and light as a regular mochi donut. the icing might be too sugary for some but i didn't mind it. the thai tea one is pretty sweet with a strong tea flavor (literally tastes like thai tea in a donut), the yuzu lemon packs a tangy and tart punch, and the guava one is also pretty sweet but balanced with tart. i also tried the black sesame mochi muffin, which was a little underwhelming - the sesame flavor isn't very strong. its a good option if you want something less sweet though! my ranking would be 1. guava donut, 2. thai tea donut, 3. yuzu lemon donut, and 4. black sesame mochi muffin. if you're into unique sweets and asian/hawaiian food, you might really like this spot! read more

Best matcha latte EVER. Perfectly sweet. Straight out the gate. It wasn't cloyingly sweet--not the kind that makes you feel diabetic. But perfect- like a hug. For people sensitive to sweet- you may not like it. But for me, it was heaven. The Vietnamese coffee mochi donut was good. I think I hoped it would have more of a caffeine kick...but maybe that's a bit much to ask of a pastry. This place is to close to my work and has really become one of my faves. In fact if I left my job it is a place I would really miss. They make Mochi waffles, muffins and donuts. Quality and flavors are amazing. Plus everything is so tasty. The passion fruit, Uber, black sesame, and coconut are some of my favorite. I recently went to their anniversary celebration and they had a new mocha flavored donut that I LOVED. I needed this in my life. There iced matcha is also unique and flavorful. They also had a new sparkling drink and mochi truffles. Get the green tea truffle, just get it. Everyone I've ever sent there loves this place. Do yourself a favor and go. Mochi Goods: Black Sesame Mochi Muffin - 4/5 - Definitely can taste the black sesame which is very rich in flavor. Original Mochi Muffin - 3/5 - I know this is known as one of the better tasting flavors but I thought it was just ok. Lemon Yuzu - 3.5/5 - The glaze had a nice lemony flavor to it and the donut had a nice chew just like all of them. Churro Muffin - 3.5/5 - Definitely reminded me of a cinnamon sugar donut which is always a nice treat. Service: 4/5 - Friendly and helpful waitstaff. Matcha latte and Mochi muffin goodness! I've seen their baked goods at coffee/ boba shops before but this is my first time at their store in Berkeley. TIP: check in on Yelp for 10% off! (One-time offer). - iced caramel roasted matcha latte: very similar to hojicha latte! I was worried the caramel would make it overly sweet but the sweetness was just right :) - black sesame mochi muffin: this one is the prettiest looking one in my opinion, and is also my most favorite! Love the texture and the flavor. - ube mochi muffin: I'd have preferred a stronger ube flavor, but not bad. Definitely worth the try. - cheese: the only savory option!! My second favorite. Perfect for when you're not feeling sweet but still want a taste of the mochi muffin texture. - chocolate cheesecake: this one was my least favorite out of the four flavors I tried. The top part is the typical mochi muffin texture with good chocolate flavor, but the bottom's texture (which is supposed to imitate the crust part of the cheesecake) is a bit weird. Overall, I love the variety of mochi muffin and mochi donut flavors they have to offer. The only con is that it's quite pricey. Street parking only. read more

3.5 stars but rounded up to 4. Came on a Thursday morning, so there was no wait here at all, which was great. Despite the bakery being completely empty though, the guy taking our order seemed really impatient and annoyed when we were trying to make our decisions/asking for what was popular. That being said, the drinks and pastries themselves were great. The drinks were whisked in front of us, and both of them tasted super fragrant yet light. I really enjoyed the roasted matcha/hojicha one. The mochi muffins didn't taste the most fresh but were still delicious. I would probably want to come back again just to try their wide variation of mochi donuts next time. read more

Thanks To Yelp searching, I came across this place and definitely made our way while on the way to sf! We weren't disappointed at all. The place itself was a little hard to find because of a lot of turns lol but we were glad to reach it. The place is very cute and has outdoor seating available to enjoy your treats with your pals. They have a menu right by the entrance so you can see what you can order before entering. We ordered the roasted matcha strawberry lychee and the cold brew strawberry lychee. I personally that the roasted matcha tasted better, and that means a lot coming from this daily coffee drinker. The mochi muffins and donuts were delish. We had two outside and kept another two for home. The flavors were definitely on point. Part of me wanted to run in and get more. The drinks came out really quick too. While I was picking my mochi goodies, by the time I chose and picked--our drinks were ready! Thank you third culture! We will definitely be back. read more

Recently ordered a few mochi donuts (raspberry lychee, guava cheesecake, and ube coconut), two mochi muffins (brownie & matcha), and the roasted matcha latte and was pleasantly surprised. The mochi donuts had a nice texture to them (like butter mochi) which I personally enjoy more than the mochi donuts like at Mochinut. The mochi muffins were on the drier side but still had good flavor. And the latte was very creamy and roasty! Would definitely come back to try more donuts and drinks in the future :) read more

I love this bakery. The original mochi muffin is like a healthy, savory version of a toasted marshmallow. And they just get more interesting from there! We tried the guava strawberry mochi donut too (my kids loved that one)! I toured the bakery on 7th street and it is everything you'd want from a small business in Berkeley. It's run by a kind, conscientious couple who love to care for their community by making the highest quality tasty food while while respecting their employees. I saw (and smelled) how the sweet sesame was ground and their secret ingredients some of which are fresh plants imported from Asia. I learned about third culture and the very special rice farm in the central valley where they source their sweet mochi rice. read more
