While placing my order, 2 other girls were talking about guns, drawing pictures of bullets on the reservation list and wondering when the cops were going to come take them away. Never once acknowledging I was standing 5 feet from them. Paid for the food and waited... got to listen to more of their story. Not sure its great form to curse in front of guests. My husband and I checked out Thipi Thai on a date night recently, after meaning to go there for awhile. We're big fans of thai food and were excited to see that this location is only about 10 minutes away from us. The reviews and photos looked excellent so we headed out. The location is pretty easy to find, though parking may be a challenge during certain times of the day. It is right in the heart of downtown Glen Ellyn so street side parking is the way to go if it is available. The street that Thipi is on is a one way, though you can park a block or two down where it is still two way if you prefer. There are lots of other cute shops along the block if you'd like to peruse on your way to or from. The restaurant itself is beautiful inside! It has a lovely atmosphere and is richly furnished and decorated. We got seated right by the window which was great for people watching on such a nice day. I tried their red sangria and it was perfect to go with my meal (and quite strong!). We started with the sampler appetizer tray (crab rangoon, spring rolls, pot stickers and satay) and for the price you get a lot to eat. This probably would have filled me up by itself! We ordered the fried rice and the pad thai with tofu as our entrees and they were large and tasty. I ordered the fried rice extra spicy and it was VERY spicy, so if you're a fan of hot food you can probably just go with the regular spice. We had plenty to go home to serve as a couple of extra leftover meals. We enjoyed our experience and will definitely be back! read more

I hadn't been here in ages, so I didn't know what to expect. Well this place is still great! The food and atmosphere still have a great feel, you know what I'm talking about! There's that energy you get when you walk into a restaurant and you think " Yes, this is it!" We visited here while it was FREEZING outside, do they weren't that busy but it didn't feel empty . Some places cut back the number of servers on those nights, but we had excellent service. We had some questions and she was very patient and good with suggestions. I was introduced to this place a few months ago by my friend, Candice, who is a big fan of Thipi Thai. Since then, I've been hooked. I went back for a second time and I agree--- I love this place!! My date and I both had the 'Spicy Basil'. The ingredients are fresh and tasty, and the spice level is right on. We also had the Crab Rangoon for an appetizer, which was crispy and so good. Thipi thai used to be one of my favorite thai restaurants in the area but I ate there this past weekend and was greatly disappointed in the quality of the food. The last time I had dined there was back in December so it's been some time but this time the cooking was way off compared to the past. I ordered pad thai and massamun curry and both tasted like they were cooked in different sauces which made it taste awful. The curry normally has potatoes and is a heavier consistency and my dish had pineapples in it and was a very soupy consistency. The pad thai tasted like there was no peanut sauce in it and was on the sweeter side. I am wondering If they changed management or chefs but compared to the past, this experience was not up to par. read more

A planned trip to Glen Elynn for reasons to long and who cares had me creeping along a snowy street looking for the Starbucks, what a pleasant surprise when I laid eyes on Thipi Thai a quick glance at the lunch indicated lunch was 2 house away so my place for lunch was sealed The trips to Glenn Elynn are somewhat reoccurring and though seldom necessary to be their at lunch time I'll justify a reason to come early again in order to eat at Thipi Thai. I went with the Thai Fried Rice w/chicken (in unison now) NO VEGGIE, extra, extra spicy and you see the stars above. This place after a few more visits (the number of visits is directly related to the Blackhawks and how far they will go in the Cup finals so go Hawks) this place can easily become a five star place. The decor / ambience what ever fancy word one uses to describe the fanciness of place was top notch as good as it gets. The service wasn't 5 star but it was good enough. The portions were just a wee bit smaller then the average Thai place but I need smaller portions so that is not a big minus but I didn't have enough for take home but was there none because the portion was to small or because I liked it so much I couldn't stop eating. Before seeing an afternoon matinee of "The Lego Movie" with friends at The Glen, my love and I stopped to have lunch here. The ambiance is actually pretty romantic (or was it just me with bubble hearts floating around my head?) and offers comforting warm colors, elephant figurines, rich colored curtains and personal touches like pressed paper table tops. It's a nice spot for a couple to dine at or for a casual famliy gathering. We were seated near the windows in front. Which was really nice, because we got to watch the gentle winter snowfall as we ate. The service was impeccible, not once did we have to search for our waitress or ask for anything. It kind of magically appeared. We started with an appetizer of the Chicken Satay. Never having had it before, we thought it was delicious, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. For our entrees, I ordered the "Spicy Basil" and my fiance ordered the "Garlic Madness." Although I seriously misjudged my own heat tolerance, I liked the heat of the Spicy Basil through a runny nose and tingling lips. It was filling and full of flavor in every bite. The portion was large enough, that I took some home for leftovers. (Which were delicious the next day.) My fiance thoroughly enjoyed his garlic madness, and brought some home as well. I of course had the un-exciting Chicken Pad Thai like every boring white man in America does. But at least I am consistent, and I then can basically keep score of which Thai place I think has the best Chicken Pad Thai. This place is right up there. After getting a raving review about their food, we were excited to try a new Thai place! We were pretty disappointed. Pros: We came in about a half hour until closing and they accommodated us. The ambiance was beautiful Cons: I can't eat the ambiance, so the food was the important part and it was not good. We had the Tom Kha Kai soup that left a lot to be desired taste wise, with very little chicken. My Crab Rangoon were gross balls of deep fried cream cheese, no crab or veggies to speak of. My husband said his Gyoza was decent at best. My husband ordered a dirty martini and said that the olives tasted really gross to the point that he couldn't eat them. He drank his martini, but regretted it later when he was sick to his stomach. I think they were bad. I really wanted to like this place, its close to us and a beautiful restaurant, but alas, its not good and not worth a retun trip. We did carry out on a Saturday evening. When I walked in to pick up, about 7:30pm or so, the place was absolutely packed. It's a nice looking space - modern but comfortable. Looks like some seating upstairs too, which reminds me of the old Spice and Easy days when I was really, really young. So let's get on to the food: Lettuce wraps good but not anywhere close to enough filling for the amount of lettuce (and price). The sauce was decent. Just...a little bit more contents, please. Chicken satay tasted like cheap meat. It didn't have a whole lot of flavor beyond the peanut sauce I dipped it in. I could have skipped this easily, and wish I had. Panang curry was spicy and tasty, but the beef was also cheap tasting and chewy. There was plenty of it, but it seemed a bit more liquid than many other Thai curries I have had elsewhere. That is, plenty of "sauce", not enough "meat" (or veggies for that matter). And not enough rice. But the taste and spice were quite good. Spicy seafood was good. It did have a decent amount of seafood in it, and tons of noodles. It lacked a good garlic flavor which had been promised, so that was a disappointment. All in all, the food was okay but I don't need to rush back. Prices did seem high for what we got, especially the appetizers. 3 stars max. read more

From the outside this place looks like your average Thai restaurant, but one you get in it is really nice. They have a long wooden bar, deep red fabric on the walls and lots of neat Asian art. I was impressed as soon as I walked in and then the food wowed me. I had the garlic chicken with brown rice and it was delicious! The rice was fluffy and a little bit sweet. The tofu soup was excellent as well. Definitely worth going in rather than having take out or delivery. read more

This was a great find in downtown Glen Ellyn and we will definitely be back! I've never tried Thai food, but I am generally a fan of other Asian cuisines and I enjoy spicy, so I was looking forward to our visit, and Thipi Thai did not disappoint. My husband and I each ordered a cocktail. Mine had lychee and I think pineapple juice and my husband tried a sake cocktail. They were both good...but VERY strong (I mean, my husband's was all alcohol, so no way it couldn't have been strong) and big! One was way more than enough for us, and we are not casual drinkers. That sounds bad, so let's move on to the food... We started with the egg rolls, which were very tasty, and a great amount of food for my husband and I to split. If we had been dining with friends, we would have definitely needed to order another appetizer or two. We both enjoyed our entrees, and actually found the portions of both entrees to be extremely generous--we both took leftovers home. Definitely recommend! read more

This place is solid. Not the best I've ever had, but certainly not the worst. Their Thai iced tea is very good. A bit too sweet for me, but really strong tea flavor. Most places go heavy on the cream and sugar and skimp out on the tea. Egg roll and chicken satay was good as well. My partner really enjoyed the pad knee mow, I tasted it and liked it also. Good heat, and not too sweet. My duck with shiitake mushrooms was way too sweet for my taste, a shame because I love shiitake mushrooms and really couldn't eat them. I thought the spinach it came with was going to be cooked but it was raw and more of a garnish. The duck was well cooked though, skin on and moist. I asked for it spicy and it definitely was not. We were seated immediately. The service was slow. It took over 45 minutes for our meals to come out from the kitchen. The food itself was just OK, but wasn't amazing. Maybe it was a spice issue? Everything was pretty bland. I ordered my standard pad see ewe, and it wasn't as sweet an I typically experience. It was almost like something was missing. I mean- takeout usually just sucks because it sits in plastic containers and gets soggy and clumpy and who wants to eat soggy clump. But this is always great. We decided to dine in. I just had some Thipi Thai takeout and it was tasty, thrifty, and big enough for two. I wish I could list some more T words but I am in a Thai food coma and my brain is working slower than usual...sorry. I ended up getting the Chicken Pad Thai and it was pretty good. It didn't blow my mind or anything, but it was yummy. The way they pack it up for takeout is cool because you can easily take out any parts you don't like, which for me means "LATER, red cabbage and carrots!". The tofu was good too...it wasn't too squishy or tasteless like some other places. Dinner ended up costing $10 and I only ate half so I get a tasty lunch tomorrow too. Yahooooooooo! I'd like to come back and dine in and see if that changes my opinion at all. To be continued, Thipi Thai... **So I finally made it back to Thipi Thai...this time dining in. I went off my usual Pad Thai path and ordered Garlic Madness because a) garlic is delicious, b) it keeps the vamps away, and c) apparently I don't want anyone coming near my mouth for the next 48 hours. Anyway, it was pretty good. The meat wasn't spectacular but he flavor of the sauce was excellent. My man got the Panang Curry and really liked it too although it was a whole lot of sauce and only a little of the goods inside. Guess that's pretty typical of most Thai places though. First time visit to this downtown Glen Ellyn spot based upon a recommendation. The atmosphere and the decor is quite nice, tall ceiling, long bar, raised level near the front windows. The food was very good. We had the Thipi platter appetizer sampler, and our main courses were Orange Duck, Sesame Chicken, and the Green Curry with shrimp. I know that many judge Thai restaurants on their Pad Tha, but I always judge them on their Green curry and the version here was delicious. A little spicier than most (I love spicey) with many fresh tasting shrimp in an excellent curry sauce. Sweet potato slices in the curry was a first for me but it went perfectly with the dish. . Our party of three was very pleased with the food quality. Our server was a cute little young lady who was most attentive and kept our drinks full while keeping an eye on us and checking that all was well. After that, no room for dessert. That will have to be experienced on another visit How I see it: Nice atmosphere + Excellent food + Attentive service = WINNER. I am giving it 4 stars because I am stingy with the stars and it was a first visit. I have to have repeated experiences to go with five stars, so we will see because I definitely will be back to try some of their other dishes. read more

Great ambiance. There are pieces of art that aren't typically seen in a Thai restaurant. Still Thai, but very arboreal. As for the food, we headed here for lunch. This was my first time so I ordered a Pad Siew to test out the joint. Portions were just right and the taste exceeded my expectations. Of course, I was expecting a bland taste for some reason, but it had a great balance in flavors. Now, the Pad Thai was interesting. It was great as well, but different since its taste leaned more towards the tamarind side. I had a tamarind aftertaste. I particularly like tamarind so it was a pleasant surprise. I can imagine someone thinking something about the dish was off but didn't know what. It was pretty empty during lunch so service was great. Oh yeah, the thai iced tea was different too. Maybe too heavy on the half & half and less on the tea. I'll go back again and try a curry. read more

My brother, friend, and I went to Thipi this past Monday. We actually were going to go to Pad Thai Etc. in Wheaton, but we did not know that it is closed on Mondays, like many Asian establishments. However, it seems like it was a blessing is disguise. This was my 2nd time and Thipi, and it was very good the first time. However, this time I was blown out of the water! Amazing food! We all ordered Tom Yum soup; mine was the chicken variation. Very tasty, and just the right amount of kick. I ordered Pork Kee Mao, and it was amazing! I ordered their Pad Thai last time, and although I was impressed, I prefer the Kee Mao dish at any Thai place, and TT did not disappoint. There was great balance of meat, veggies, and noodles, just like my previous dish. Another positive for this experience was the dish of hot sauces/peanuts that our server brought for us. They also cooked my dish mildly, which is what I asked for. They also made my friends' dishes exactly how they requested. The only knock I have on TT is that they are slow on the drink refills, but I do drink a lot, so it is understandable. Very good Thai for the Western Burbs!!!! Check it out! read more

Sometimes when it's cold there is nothing like some spicy Thai food to heat you up from the inside out. And when it's Thai food, I only need the mild or medium spice for it to feel really spicy! I'm a spice wimp in the Thai food world. We started with the platter appetizer. You can't really go wrong with some fried apps and this platter did not disappoint. It was probably a bit of overkill for just the two of us at dinner but it was delicious and worth it. I was a little disappointed by my entree. Not through any fault of Thipi but my own terrible reading comprehension. I wanted noodles but I was a little overwhelmed with choices and am by no means an expert in Thai food and I ended up ordering a dish with fried rice noodles. Not the soft noodles I wanted. The flavor of the dish was really good however I just need to work on understanding the menu better. My dining partner ordered the Bangkok Noodle Shrimp and his dish was amazing. I was seriously having some entree envy. It worked out nicely though because he ended up giving me his leftovers! read more

Love this place!!!! I've tried many different dishes here and have liked them all. I've probably had the Thai fried rice at least 30 times in the past few years -- I don't know what's in their brown sauce but it's addictive. I've had Rama noodles, the garlic beef dish, the four mushroom dish (sorry, I don't remember the menu names), and they're all fantastic. I religiously order the chicken satay every time I order solely because I want the peanut sauce. I love it. We have also ordered the tofu rolls repeatedly. Every time we go there, the staff is so nice. Our food is fresh and delicious, takeaway orders are quick and efficient, and I think the prices are reasonable. There are no other Thai places that I know of nearby, and I'm so glad that the one closest to my house is so fabulous. read more

Had lunch here yesterday with an old Redbox colleague in charming downtown Glen Ellyn. Parking is a bit tough, requiring some circling or a little bit of a walk, but in nice weather that's no problem. Sat quickly, served fairly quickly, but somehow in the end lunch took over an hour, not sure how. It felt like the time between served, getting our bill, and getting our card rung up was lengthy. Maybe we caught our waitress on a break. Perhaps it was due to lunch menu ordering, but my pineapple curry shrimp seemed a bit small. My dining companion's meal, from the same menu, seemed ... more robust, and it certainly took him longer to finish it. The coconut milk curry in my dish however was nothing short of AWESOME. Not highly appreciate of tail-on shrimp when the shrimp aren't fried. Peeled shrimp would be an improvement in my mind. All in all a nice place, decent atmosphere, staff seems nice. The last time I was here was about four years ago before I moved overseas. The food was great then. Did something change? Maybe my tastebuds. I just don't think it's as good as it was in the past. I try to wait a full day before I write a review for restaurants because my body is pretty good at showing symptoms of eating too much MSG-laden food. So yes, I felt the usual bloating and dry mouth. MSG? check. The thai food is a bit different here than the other thai restaurants I've been to (Cozy Noodles, Zoba - being my two favorites up in Evanston). I think the curries here are fairly good, but the pad thai and the thipi noodle dish are less than mediocre. Also, the acoustics for the restaurant leave much to be desired and it is actually impossible to hold a decent conversation on the second floor of the restaurant b/c all the noise from the first floor (including kitchen) rise up. Decent place in the western suburbs for Thai food, but there are better places elsewhere. At least parking in downtown Glen Ellyn isn't a nightmare! read more

I love Thipi Thai! My friend had never tried Thai food, so I wanted to make sure that we went to a highly recommended place. Thank you yelpers for the helpful reviews we found here. We had the Lettuce Wrap as our appetizer and it was yummy! The sauce to marinade the chicken was delicious. As an entrée I had the Spicy Chicken Basil with rice. It was tasty and spicy. The portion big enough to satisfy my empty stomach (I had skipped lunch and left nothing on the plate). My friend had the Chicken Pad Ped and loved it. For drinks I had the lycheetini. If you've had lychee before you know it's similar to a pear flavor, but for me it's even better. I highly recommend it. My friend had the drink special of the Thipi Mai Tai. It was a strong flavored rum and fruit juice for $5. For dessert we had a very interesting combination. We ordered the Taro Pearls in coconut cream and lychee ice cream. I had never tried taro in my life and it was a very interesting consistency, think gummy bears. The coconut cream was hot like a soup. It may sound weird but it was actually great! First thing we noticed was the very cool decor. Elephants on the silverware? Yes, please! Decent food, although they skimped on the meat and loaded up on vegetables for both of our dishes, and minimal service - which is fine by us, since we're not needy, but meant that the check and the water refills took...longer than they should have. Watered down curries, disgusting fried rice. All the curries we ordered were watered down and left a strange aftertaste. Curry fried rice was plain disgusting. Prices are high (+11 for a curry) for a Thai restaurant (usually it's around 8-10 dollars). I'm Asian and I know my Thai. Never in my life could I not finish a Thai curry because it was just plain disgusting. My entire party left feeling ripped off, disgusted, and in agreement to never return. Thipi Thai is catered for white people who probably never had real Thai food and think Panda Express is good Asian cuisine. All in all, just don't go here.
