Pepper-Salted Squid
Quang L.

This is one of those "if you know, you know" places. My family took me here when I was a kid and I've been obsessed with their salt and pepper squid ever since. I've tried countless other salt pepper squid places across the country and nothing compares. It has the perfect combination of crispiness and chewiness - the squid is cut to a perfect size where it's not too big or not too small. Also the perfect blend of saltiness, pepperiness, and just enough sweetness. If you ever come here and not order the salt and pepper squid, you're doing yourself a huge disservice. Just look around and see how literally everyone else is eating the same thing. Oh and shout out to our server - we forgot our to-go box of food on the table and she ran out to our car with it right before we left.

I've been going to this place since early 2000's as a kid growing up, due to going to the Grotto every Sunday. I've seen this place at its peak, and how it has slowed down over the years. Since COVID I have only gotten take out. I go for the pepper salted squid. Is it as good as when I had it as a kid? I'd say no, but still the best place to get it. I tend to go right at opening and order it before arriving. It always made fresh. The quality is always delicious. I live about 30-40mins away, and I will make the trip for just the squid. Pro tip, take it out of the bag to avoid condensation.

This use to be bomb here ! Salt and paper squid was best in the city and/or ever !!!!!!!! Bad news....not any more. After Covid prices was going up and up for it. NOW $22 for an order of salt and pepper squid ! Look at the photo...very over fried and prob using old oil to fry it. Taste burnt ! I think I'm done from here ...will try another spot in Troutdale. To top it off of high prices ...they now charge you 2.5% for using a credit card, a nice kick in the balls after you eat it ! Other pict was 9 years ago look at the difference. Sad but true this was prob last time we get it from here. Original owners retired ....and so are we !!!

Pepper salted squid: gotta have it!

No frills here, and that's alright by me. Everytime you go, you HAVE to have the pepper salted squid if nothing else! We usually get vibes brocalli in garlic & oyster sauce & a bowl of rice, that's all you need! The PSS- IS ADDICTIVE, so don't say that I didn't warn you!

Thien Hong is one of the restaurants that I frequented with my family when I was growing up in the Portland area. I remember their salt and pepper squid was so delicious that we always had to order two plates. We used to joke that the salt was actually cocaine because it was so addicting. I moved away more than a decade ago, but on my most recent trip back, I wanted a taste of nostalgia again. The decor hasn't changed a bit. We ordered a spread of snow pea leaves, crispy chow mein, a few dim sum pieces, walnut shrimp, and of course, their signature dish, the salt and pepper squid. The fried squid pieces were pretty small. I remember the squid pieces being a lot larger a long time ago, but the flavor is relatively the same and is still good. I think this dish is the thing that keeps people coming back, but otherwise, their other dishes are pretty average in comparison to other Cantonese restaurants that you can go to in the Portland area. Thien Hong is worth a visit if you want to try salt and pepper squid that can't be replicated anywhere else.

Yes, yes & yes! Every time I've come here when visiting Oregon from California in the last 2 1/2 years this place was only serving to-go orders due to the plandemic. So I would only order two pepper-salted calamari orders. I'm happy to say this summer I got to come by when they're doing indoor seating again! The lady at the front greeted us immediately as we walked in with a smile and seated us at our table. All of the employees seemed to be happy and grateful that they get to serve customers inside again! The ambience is still the same as it was before, old school family owned Chinese restaurant. And everything we ordered was absolutely delicious! I want to go back before we go back home to California this Sunday lol

Salt and Pepper Squid

Classic Chinese spot that has been around for years in Portland. The Salt and Pepper Squid is the reason to always come back. Wide range of options. Service has been much better with new ownership.

Had a great experience here! Even with our large group of 14, the service was impressively fast--we got our food within 10-15 minutes. The food was fantastic, and the sweet and sour catfish soup stood out as my favorite. We had tofu enoki, salted pepper and squid, honey walnut shrimp, and a couple of noodle dishes and almost everything is gone. I forgot to take pictures of the actual food, but here are a couple of shots of the aftermath! The atmosphere was no-nonsense vibe but the waitresses were friendly

Are they still in business? Tried to call on May, June & this month but no one answers the phone? I live all the way in Seattle so I want to call first to make sure they're open

They are back open! Just went in today. They closed for a moment to "remodel".

It's definitely a nice spot for dinner. The service was great, and our food came out pretty quickly. You order at the counter first, and they give you a number to take to your table. There's complimentary water and utensils available on the side, which makes everything pretty convenient. You can also choose to sit inside, outside, or get your food to go. We ordered the pho with steak and brisket, and it was delicious! We also got the vermicelli with pork, which had a lot of flavor. The portions are pretty generous, so the vermicelli would be great to share. Overall, we had a great experience at Luc Lac. Let me tell you, if they had this place in Seattle, it would be poppin' for sure. Loved the decor, and the service was amazing. We were a party of 8, and they did the most to get us seated. They even combined two tables for us without too much wait. We appreciated this so much! This is one of those places where you order at the counter, and they bring your food to your table, although they also seat you. So you wait in line to order, and then you wait a little longer to get a seat. The menu is on a huge, lit-up billboard behind the counter, so you'll see folks crowded in that area trying to read it. The food was alright, no one was particularly blown away. I got a pho, and I would say it was okay. I think you come here more for the vibe and scratching that craving than for out-of-this-world food/flavors. The music is good, the servers were all super friendly, and it's a great vibe. Fyi, there's mostly street parking.

The egg noodle bowl on the top with fried chicken and tofu was phenomenal. The chicken was similar to fish sauce wings and the tofu was very caramelized and had a nice salty coating of sauce. The bottom was nem nướng and pork with the woven noodles. It was a very big portion, but the fresh herbs/veggies made it feel balanced. An order of spring rolls were also ordered, but wasn't in the photo. It was ordered with crispy pork belly. Based on some reviews, I was skeptical about ordering the pork belly, but I was pleasantly surprised. The skin was very crispy and you could hear the crunch from across the restaurant. The restaurant is very open with big windows, but I liked the concept of the open kitchen look. The service was really good. We ended up ordering pork belly and shrimp for our spring rolls and the worker politely came by and told us they were out of it. He was able to accommodate for it and was very kind about it. We were brought here based on my MIL suggestion and let me tell you! The food was amazing! The environment was great and clean. The bathroom was also clean as well! The pork chop that came with my dish was tender, I was able to cut it with my spoon and the shrimp wrapped in tofu and fried was probably my favorite! The pork had a great char, the shrimp were grilled well, and the crispy wrap added a nice textural crunch. Steamed broccoli was a fresh addition, and the side broth hit the spot. * The Pork Chops with Shredded Pork Skin (Bì) & Egg Meatloaf (Chả Trứng) plate was decent, though a bit average compared to other spots nearby. The flavors were fine, but nothing particularly stood out. * Noodle Soup: The spicy beef noodle soup had a rich, deep color and a generous amount of fresh herbs and onions, though the broth lacked a bit of the punch and depth of flavor I was hoping for. Overall: It's a convenient neighborhood option with generous portions and fast service, but given the quality of Vietnamese food along Powell and 82nd, it lands right in the middle for me. Good, but not quite a standout.
