One of the reasons we chose it was because she really wanted an outdoor space, and enjoyed many flowers on her balcony as well as visiting birds. The care, cleaning and dining staff was very friendly and helpful to her. However, when I requested that the nurse reevaluate her because she was beginning to need more assistance, she told me she'd visit my mom the next day but she never did. That was 2 months ago, (and my mom passed 1 month ago.) In general the reception and administration staff seemed very unorganized and unreliable. One of the main reasons we moved my mom to Atria was for them to check on her if she didn't show up for meals. They did sometimes but it seemed very casual. On Mother's Day, when mom hadn't responded to any of her many texts, I called for a well check at 1PM. It was too late. My mom had passed away sometime in the previous 24 hours. How do I know? State of her body. No activity on her cell phone for over a day. And with investigation we found out she had not been checked on by Atria staffe since lunch Saturday, despite having not eaten the next three meals. Hopefully my mom passed peacefully in her sleep and didn't suffer as that's what she wanted. We will never know for sure and we are very saddened about about this. We hope other families don't experience the extra grief of learning their loved one has been ignored that long. We have been told staff has had retraining on the check in procedure. I hope so! PS I gave 2 stars instead of 1 because like I said my mom was content and she loved the staff she interacted with. The extra star is for my sweet mom.

We are delighted to have discovered The Glen at Heather Farm because it is surrounded by a quiet, lovely neighborhood; offers access to beautiful hiking trails; is in proximity to Walnut Creek's shops and restaurants; and provides nearby access to the outstanding John Muir Health medical center. Making such a large life change will be difficult, but we look forward to forming new friendships and becoming part of a dynamic, caring community. Because construction won't be finished for another year or more, we have time to prepare for this next big step. In designing the property, the developers of The Glen are trying to be environmentally friendly, something that very much appeals to us. My father had been declining in health for years, eventually diagnosed with PSP (progressive…read moresupranuclear palsy) and his care needs kept escalating; over the last 2 years we moved him 3+ times (from his home to independent living, to assisted care, to a SNF, and lastly to memory care of contra costa: MCCC under hospice orders). MCCC was a godsend for us. A smaller facility dedicated to memory care meant that every caregiver and staff member was trained and knew how to provide for seniors with higher needs. My father in particular needed specific diet instructions, non-verbal communication, and direct assistance with all daily tasks. We didn't have to deal with a wait-list (maybe we were lucky, there was a unit readily available), the pricing is very straightforward, and all the staff quickly became some of his favorite people. They also coordinated seamlessly with Suncrest hospice of walnut creek, which made regular updates and communication very easy. My father moved into MCCC in January and passed away in April. And I truly believe the high quality and genuine care he received there was part of how we were able to send him off in the best possible way: surrounded by family, listening to the music he loved, hearing the words "i love you," and feeling a warm embrace as he took his last breaths. Senior care is a complex and increasingly expensive proposition in the US, MCCC made the price feel well worth it and we never questioned whether we made the right decision moving him here. There really are some of the most empathetic, altruistic, and caring people working there - I hope they know that and can be reminded that the direct care they provide honors the dignity of their residents and brings immense peace of mind to the families and friends who love them.

The place my mother was at before going to the Willows was eager to get rid of her because she was so much work. My mother did fall a couple of times while at the Willows and was admitted to the emergency room as a matter of protocol, however soon afterward, the Willows took additional precautions to limit her risk. Over the years that I visited my mother, the Willows staff was always very friendly to me and my mother. It doesn't take many visits to realize what a tough job it is to take care of the residents in the North Wing. It is not fun growing old, and residents can be difficult and emotionally demanding, yet the Willows staff maintained a positive attitude. Not everyone is cut out for that kind of work. I consider the staff who took care of my mother angels of mercy. It wasn't until my mother's last days that I saw how much the staff at Willows cared for my mother. They had grown attached to my mother, and when she passed away, they felt the loss as did I. I am grateful to the Willows staff for taking care of my mother as if she were their family.
