Great spot! I first learned about The Yard from Shark Tank, then had my first experience in Atlanta. Loved it, so was pretty excited when I learned that I would have one nearby when moving to Virginia Beach. Went with a few friends on a week night and it wasn't busy. The Yard has been on my list since they opened bc of their instagram-worthy shakes, but the wait times kept me at bay for quite a while. Seeing the lines and hearing about 2+ hour waits made me say, "Nah, I'll wait that out". Finally, yesterday, my fiancee and I stopped in to treat ourselves. I have to say, I'm super glad that we didn't wait 2+ hours. I would've been very disappointed. I wasn't overly impressed. It's much smaller inside than I thought. Based upon the photos, I thought this was more like a restaurant where you order at the table, but I saw it's more like ColdStone Creamery where you go up and stand in a queue, order, pay, and then wait. They had a very limited amount of tables, all full, so we had to stand for about 10 minutes before a table cleared up while we waited for our shakes. The shake took about 15 minutes (there was one group of two in front of us) to make and was brought to our table when ready. I chose the pint jar with the souvenir cup for $16 and went with the Cookie Butter Me Up which was comprised of cinnamon and cookie butter ice cream in a vanilla iced jar rolled in cinnamon sugar topped with a ton of whipped cream, some Cinnamon Toast Crunch pieces and a full-sized cinnamon bun. The cinnamon bun was lukewarm and had very little flavor though it was moist, the ice cream was decent but had chunks of cookie butter in it that was hard and weird texture.... I just didn't love it. My fiancee didn't want as much so he went with the smaller version for $11 (still a TON of ice cream) and chose the Holy Cacao bc he likes chocolate. His was chocolate ice cream with chocolate drizzle, topped with whipped cream, mini M&Ms, a chunk of M&M chocolate bark and a scoop of double chocolate cookie dough. He liked it but didn't love it and I don't love chocolate ice cream so he was all on his own. So, I didn't love his, mine was good but not amazing and when I saw someone's Cookie Monster shake go past me, I had serious order remorse.... It is a nice touch that they have a small station on the back wall with about 3 sinks where you can rinse out your souvenir cups and clean them before you leave. Unexpected and most places with such take-home items don't make it so easy to clean them up before you have to take them home. Nice. I don't think I will come back. It was $30 for two milkshakes and they weren't even that great. I have been seeing this place pop up in Facebook here and there. It was always in my list to visit. I had the opportunity to visit in late August. This is definitely a hot spot. It's definitely a place many have on their radar as well. Parking can be tight, but it is there. The buzz about this business is still very much alive. So much that it just made it to my one and done list. I say that in the nicest of ways. Arrived and there is very limited parking. The line was snaking out of the door. You order and then you wait for your number to be called. We were told that after you wait in line and then place your order it'd be a 45 minute wait to get your order. They do have jars of pre-packed ice cream in a freezer near the register if you'd like a grab and go option. *You still need to wait in line. There is indoor and outdoor seating available. If you order an item that is served in a jar, you get to keep the jar and there is a sink to wash it for cleaner transport. Be aware, they don't have lids to give you for any uneaten portion or your souvenir jar. After about 50 minutes, my ordered items arrived...incrementally. I had ice cream on a waffle cone that came soft and melting. My son's chocolate, peanut butter and brownie sundae didn't disappoint. My guy's milkshake came out much later and seemed thin and not thicker consistency like most milkshakes are. Capable of contactless pay and they do offer a military discount. During the warmer days, plan accordingly as you're guaranteed to wait. There are a few televisions inside and outside. My frozen lemonade was overwhelmingly sweet. It was way to sweet for someone like me who doesn't eat many sweet, sugary foods. The drink was very well put together and the flavor was just the right amount of lemony to remind you that it's still a lemonade. The staff was nice and polite as they ran around the shop taking orders and what not. It is a bit difficult to hear orders being called especially if there are lots of people inside the shop. After waiting 15 minutes for our desserts to come out, and then snapping a photo of my "over-the-top" milkshake, all I was left with a tiny little milkshake for about $17. I was under the impression that these would be bigger, but it's the whipped cream and toppings that give it the illusion of being a good size. Maybe we just eat a lot of sweets, but my husband and I drank this whole thing in about 3 minutes-- we split one because no way we were getting two at that price! I've been to The Yard Milkshake Bar twice ever since their location in VA Beach opened. The first time was a 2 weeks after they first opened. I remembered we wanted to try to go during their opening day and weekend, but every time we pass the area, the line is very long. Like circling the parking lot long. We tried to come back again, but since the drive is about 30 minutes away and it's around winter, we didn't come back until the last week of January. The only reason was I was craving for some good ice cream. If you are planning to go to The Yard (especially on the weekends and on warmer days), be prepared to wait in line. Trust me, it's worth it. This dessert shop is really small and only less than 10 tables and chairs inside the restaurant. The only also have an outside seating, which is nice. I never tried their outside seating cause when were lucky that there's an available inside table. They have a large selection of ice cream and toppings. You can also pick if you want a sundae or a milkshake. I noticed on our last visit that they also have a hot chocolate as well. For an additional charge, you can get their souvenir mason jars. We always opt in on the mason jars because it makes our sundaes/milkshakes, prettier. Their ice cream are decorated meticulously and are really pretty to look at. Before I take my first bite, I always feel bad because I feel like I am ruining it. As for the taste, their ice creams and toppings are very delicious. Their ice creams are not too sweet. The price are a little bit expensive compared to the other ice cream shops, however you are paying for beautifully tasting and delicious ice cream. With than in mind, I can tell you it's definitely worth it. The staff are very friendly and helpful. They were accommodating and very patient with me every time I try to figure out what I want on my ice cream and while I mentally calculate how much the toppings will cost us or if it is still free. Wow, wow, wow. For the grand opening to be a short while ago, I was surprised to see a line out front. To an even better surprise, the line wasn't long at all. I would definitely invest in checking out the menu beforehand, though it can be quite an overwhelming experience! I didn't know exactly what I wanted so I settled for a "build your own" milkshake with the heavenly hazelnut ice cream and a brookie mixed in + on the top. The ice cream/shake was delicious! Brookie on top was just okay. Finished in one sitting as I didn't have too much decoration to eat through. Pricing is a little eh for what it is, but I would visit again to try the heavenly hazelnut ice cream on its own. They are killing it in the imagination department when it comes to flavors & looks! read more
